Useful video! Preparing to replace alternator on my Kia Cerato 2011 2.0L with G4KD engine (Cerato is the name of Forte model sold in Australia) with electric power steering. This video is the closest match I found to my engine. I have no power steering pump so hopefully this will make things easier. Serpentine belt tensioner release from my engine requires 17mm very low profile socket and will have to use serpentine belt tool because of the narrow space between tensioner and the metal wall of approx 30mm.
Not enough clearance for the 17mm very low profile socket so I used a 17mm ring open end cheap wrench -drop forged cheap ones will bend, CRV type will not - which I slightly bent at approx 2cm from the ring so it does not touch the metal wall. Takes me 60 sec to remove the accessories belt now.
Thanks I'm going to give this a shot. This is the first car I've seen with the power steering pump right on top easy to get at and the alternator was tucked under and hard to deal with. Usually it's the other way around. That's for the video
I just did this task in an hour. All I had to do was disconnect the upper radiator hose, remove engine mount, shift the radiator and fan assembly whole to the right a few inches, and remove the power steering pump from it’s mount. I wiggles the alternator out just fine.
Dave Barajas that bottom bolt is in an open slot. Don't try and lift the engine. Just loosen the bolt. The top bolt needs to come out and just loosen the bottom one. Then the alternator will come out. The dirt and grime will have seated that thing in there pretty well so just pry and wiggle the alternator out. Watch the video again and let me know if you're still confused
Travis, I just figured out about the slotted bolt and it was grimed up just as you said. The alternator is completely detached, so it seems like taking the cooling fan out gave you room to wiggle it out? As of right now I still have the fan in
Dave Barajas yes I had to remove the fan but someone also suggested you remove the power steering pump mounting bracket. That may work. I don't have that car anymore to look. All I have is the video.
Would've loved to remove that bracket but some bolts were inaccessible. I got it out and got the new one in by following your advice and removing fan assembly. Thank you for all your help
A bad pulley bearing can be hard to find. Try listening using the handle of a screw driver in your ear and the other end near the pulley. The whine should be louder at the bar pulley then any other location. I recently replaced an AC clutch pulley that was whining but it took some careful listening to identify where it was coming from. You'll definitely want to get this replaced fast as these pulley's can seize and thrash your serpentine belt and you'll be stuck until the pulley bearing and belt are replaced.
I find it far easier to remove the intake it takes like 30 mins all 12mm bolts.when u go to install make sure the bottom bolt is in Alternator BEFORE you reinstall.
There is an automatic tensioner that you can use a 1/2" drive breaker bar or wratchet to move the pulley out of the way. Look for the pulley with the square hole above it near the power steering pump
Heather Cruz, I used the pry bars as described in the beginning. They are laying on the engine cover in the video. Yes, it is wedged in there very tight and will take a little effort to wiggle out. Just make sure you don't place the pry bar on anything fragile when you go to pry on the alternator
Monty Bonner, I did not remove the belt tensioner. But if you're asking what size wrench you need to loosen the belt, then the automatic belt tensioner has 1/2" slot for a breaker bar to fit into or you can use a 1/2" ratchet in its place and rotate it to relieve tension. I don't have my kia any longer but if I recall correctly, you should turn the tensioner clockwise. In any case, observe the tensioner on the belt and rotate in a direction that will relieve the tension.
Would you happen to know the size of bolt that holds the belt tensioner pulley? The bearing in the pulley is bad and it causes a whining/humming noise?
stunnasam21 book time is always bullshit. This is someone doing it in a shop with parts that haven't been gummed up with dirt and seated by vibration over time. Some idiot decided they would time themselves with removing clean parts for a procedure they knew how to do and call it the standard. That's why I asked this last person to post a video of how its done!
Travis Corker I did this in my shop about 2 weeks ago. Actually ended up discharging the A/C, dropping the compressor through the bottom. The alternator will fit out the bottom with the mount removed and the engine jacked up a little. Gotta remove the oil filter too. Took about 3 hrs for R&R 👍

Hour 4 and counting...... I'll just go fffff myself! 🤣
How the hell do yall get it back in?
@@asstastic jack the engine up with a piece of wood underneath and you should be able to.
@@AznKjn I got it all done but I had to unhook my AC lines.
My fan shroud wouldn't come out at all didn't have enough room between the hose hookups
Excellent video. Just one thing there is a plug right above where you showed for tensioner. The plug is to make it easy access to tensioner
very helpful, straight to the point. Thank you!!
Kia engineers deserve to be slapped. I have tons of mechanic experience and this is just horrible. Thanks for the video. My turn to try....
Theta 2 engine is designed by Hyundai but the car body by Kia. I also have to replace the alternator in my 2011 2.0 forte
I wonder just get a Dodge instead?🤭🤭🤭
@@50dugo Been there, done that. Never another Dodge EVER.
Absolutely haha.
The bottom alternator bolt is hitting the frame, I've raised and lowered engine and cannot get clearance to remove bolt. Any tips? I'm stuck

Dave Barajas awesome
Fan shroud wouldn't come out didn't have room between the hose connection and antifreeze refill area
Do you think it's possible/ easier to work from underneath the car or will a lot of things still be in the way?
I tried that. There is a lot still in the way. If I recall correctly, the AC pump was in the way. It sucks.
I did not remove the power steering pump, my altenator seems welded to the power steering pump.
Thank you ! I have a whine and after changing all pulleys and tensioner I am borrowing down on alternator

Would you be willing to help me with a more detailed explanation of this?
It says alternator removal click on video and alternator is already removed haha I’m dying 🤣😂🤣😂
I'm trying to replace the serpentine belt
Akuma Fox, here is something that may shed some light on how to remove your belt.

Did you dril to get the bolt out?
Guillermo Rivera no drilling. Just loosen that bottom bolt on the alternator. You don't have to take the bolt out. Watch the video again.
How long is the pry bar you used to get out the alternator?
quiver3320 about 10 inches
How can you loose the serpentine belt
Check out my reply to Akuma Fox below
What the serial no for belting?? Need help
Mr Sinners ummmm, what?
How did u remove the belt

Can anyone tell me how to get everything g back on their is to much tension to put everything in place?
Beth ventura what do you mean, “ too much tension”?
How did anyone get it the alternator out of position? It seems really tough
Heather Cruz, I used the pry bars as described in the beginning. They are laying on the engine cover in the video. Yes, it is wedged in there very tight and will take a little effort to wiggle out. Just make sure you don't place the pry bar on anything fragile when you go to pry on the alternator
All fwd card should have the alt on top. It's the most replaced accessory. Engineers who designed this must be an asshole.
What size is the belt tensioner bolt?

Monty Bonner, I'm sorry I don't know the size of the bolt.
17mm
My God could they have made it harder to change?
Nice thanks
You must be up north all that rust
Take the power steering bracket off and it would come right out. Book time on this job is 1.1 hours.
Kerry Lippold make a video of it
Book time is bullshit, I'd LOVE to see somebody do it in 1.1

No idea. I got it from AutoZone.
