Loved all the churches in Piraeus. I was in icon heaven 🤗
They are stunning!
Absolutely love Piraeus for its different vibes, mood, food served in psarotavernas, its geography (hills up and down), possibility to walk by the sea from the port through Peiraiki, Limani Zeas, Mikrolimano. Love it deeply
The hills are a killer but otherwise very nice!
The church is beautiful
I agree!
Your Greek is really improving! And thank you for showing Piraeus some love ... my dad grew up in a small village called Georgitsi in the Peloponnese, and one by one, he and his brothers moved to Piraeus in their late teens to find work. They all absolutely loved it there. My dad got into the food industry and worked as a cook in many tavernas before taking a job on cruise ships. It's a scrappier city compared to Athens, and the birthplace of rembetika (Greek blues music). Anyway, it means a lot to me, given my father's connection to it. They all eventually moved to the US, but his brother has an apartment in Piraeus, and his wife is from there (they met in the States though). I recently became a Greek citizen, and I hope to someday get myself a little apartment in Piraeus too. I would like to recommend the movie, Never On Sunday, which is a bit of a love letter to the spirit of Piraeus back in the day. :)
Greek lessons are helping. I like Piraeus. It’s a bit rough around the edges but a nice town with some beautiful parts.
Lunch in that small port at a fish restaurant was one of the highlights of my time in Greece. We spent half the afternoon eating little fish & drinking wine!
It’s a lovely place to sit.
Funny we visited Malaga in South of Spain earlier this year and found it a magnificent city in every way , previously regarded it only as an airport to drive away from . Maybe Piraeus is the same , have only seen it in middle of the night on way or from a ferry ! Great review well done you 😊
It is worth a few hours of exploring for sure. Thank you!
Malaga is much, much better than Piraeus, believe me.
Nice video👍👍
Thank you!
I havnt travelled on that ferry in many years and was thinking “ might be Nice “ as not in hurry this time ! But thank you for advice , love your videos , always interesting , and for someone who loves all things Greek it’s great viewing always
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Well I’ve enjoyed all your videos and they have been so very helpful. Tomorrow we finish our cruise at Piraeus. I have arranged a pick up by Welcome Pickup for a transfer to Athens in Karaiskaki. I can only imagine how busy it will be to find our driver. Wish me luck. I’m looking forward to enjoying many of the tips about Athens that I’ve learned from your videos. You Rock!!
Thank you! They will find you and should have a sign with your name on it.
Smooth as butter!
National Archeological Museum is impressive. Note: timed online reservations required
Thank you...very nice video
You’re welcome and thanks!
Greetings from Kalamata Piraeus has improved so much since i visted many years ago another interesting vlog 🍻
They have made lots of improvements. Thank you!
I was just there (but only for a day and a half) last week! I was shocked to find more to do and see than I expected. I also went to the archeological museum (including the Theater of Zea) plus saw a few closed off sites - just casually sitting next to cars, buildings, etc on the street. The museum was only 4 Euros, and the place was pretty empty. I stayed blocks from the churches you showed. I did not go into either though. I had lunch down by the last station on the metro line, and the food was from a street food place where the street is closed part of the day to cars. So only pedestrians. Really nice surprise. Definitely coming back for a longer time!
There have been lots of improvements in Piraeus over the years. I enjoy going there. Lots to do
Piraeus is actually far more alluring in the afternoon up to late night. You can walk past Zea on the opposite side you went for Mikrolimano to find dozens of little tavernas offering also seafood but with one of the best views in the whole area of Attiki peninsula. You get to see all the coast line of the Athens Riviera which is a unique spectacle as it extends for many miles. Towards the end of the area if you sit to the last restaurant you will see the night ferries departing from main port of Pireas for Crete or even for east Aegean Islands like Lesvos Chios Samos or for Dodekanese like Rhodes. But the best view in all of city and of Attiki is on top of Castella Hill or Prophet Elias hill as older people name it. It's directly above Microlimano but I don't suggest to go from Microlimano up there as there are too many stair and some other streets are quite slippery. You can easily get a taxi or walk up from the bus stop you waited for the bus to take you to Microlimano. There are 4 establishments for someone to dine there. The best one Zisis unfortunately hasn't any view towards Athens and it's Riviera from above but Rigas a taverna next to it has a wonderfull terrace to admire the view and then above where the bowling Center is there is Ladokolla restaurant with a terrace looking to Athens and Palaio Faliro. Finally there is a restaurant serving fish about a block away which has a window view towards Athens also. I find it truly imperative to return soon there by night before September leaves as the view only leaves you speechless.
Thanks for all the excellent tips!
Yes! The Archeology Museum is fantastic! One of my favorite museums in Greece. Plus lots of cool cats around the site. Also good places to eat at the marina. Easy public transportation to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. ❤ Pireaus!
It is a great museum! So many amazing things on there and hardly anyone in it.
The Holy Trinity Church is very nice. Every day at 17.00 till 18.00 there is a vesper service, that is very impressive.
I was there around that time and there wasn’t a service of any kind but maybe it hadn’t started.
You need to book a table at Varoulko days in advance!
I would imagine so. Probably even longer in the summer!
WOW! The last time I was in Piraeus was when I was 12yo, and we sailed from NYC to Piraeus on a transatlantic cruise . We were at sea for 3 weeks until we landed in Piraeus. I remember even then it being very busy, but nothing like that.
It is a happening place.
i visited piraeus and it is a very lively busy place, unfortunately the hotel i was in, was in a rough area but the main shopping district and bakery’s made up for it
-lovely video btw 💗
I’m glad that you discovered the nicer side. Thank you!
Nice to see this. I was there exactly one year ago. Had to wait for my ferry for several hours. But it was over 30 degrees C so I did not have the energy to walk around with my suitcase. Next time I should plan it. 👍
You can always leave your suitcase with a ferry office and walk around. They charge a small fee but worth it.
@@agirlandherpassport thank you for this advice! Will try it next time ❤️
I hope they will have fixed the escalator/lift/bridge combo from the metro station to the port gates by next year. You take your life in your hands crossing the main road !
The Blue line lets you out on both sides so no need to cross the road anymore. 😊
I like you title, because everybody goes to pireus to catch a boat, but especially pasalimani and tourkolimano are beautiful
There are some very nice spots there. I am sure I will go back again.
The nearby area of Piraiki has some great restaurants and is less expensive than Mikrolimano. I like Piraeus and always stay there on my first and last nights in Greece.
Maybe that will be next visit to Piraeus. Thanks
HI 🦌 deer ☺️🌊😁
Thanks I will be there next week. I have a question though, what is the usual amount for tips for transport drivers, waitresses, etc.
For waitstaff, I usually do about 10%. Taxi tips are more for excellent service. I usually do one or two euros depending on the length of the ride. More if it’s the airport or the port.
@@agirlandherpassport thank you
show us more of Piraeus!
I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Have you taken ferry to Crete in last few year , havnt in many years but thinking of it next March , will arrive Athens 6 pm so wondering about ferry as a change from flying Would you recommend ? Thank you
I have not. If you are going directly to Crete, I would fly. You could always ferry back to Athens if you want the experience
Ok thank you
@declanburke2703 You’re welcome
How long have you lived in Athens now?
Five years now. 😊
the f word maybe flisvos ?
No, it’s Freitada beach. I just looked it up. 😊
@@agirlandherpassportfreatida !!! Φρεατύδα..😅😅 piraikì the best view in europe.. from freatida untill hatzikiriakio !!! There is a song very famous about the place.. greek music was born in this place at 1925 ... listen that song... απο βραδύς ξεκινησα...😅
@@Falcon-m9wThank you!
@@agirlandherpassport do you know that song of pulp fiction its greek .. ??? 1927 misirlou....😁
No, I don’t.
Piraeus used to be poor, dodgy, underdeveloped. A place i tried to avoid.
Things are getting better though. This is what i hear.
It is. I like it and never feel unsafe there.
🙏Still prefer ATHENS 😅😅😅
Well it’s close by! 😜
@@agirlandherpassport yep, however, not quite... 😁
You need to expand your city experience lol
@@agirlandherpassport being narrow minded doesn't help much, I'm afraid.... 🙄
@shaulkirsch1263 I think you just like what you know. 😊
