I just got home from my trip to Greece and the public transport is very efficient. But be careful with your belongings because i literally saw how little kids (around 8 or 10 years old) tried to steal from the backpack of a woman and an old man in different occasions. So always keep an eye on your things. Also, people are very clever there and when you put the ticket in the machine and the door opens, people will follow you. That caught me off guard and I literally saw how 5 people came through the door with my ticket. Athens definetly needs more security! Overrall it's a very good experience, but be awhare of the things that i mentioned.
Thanks! Good to know. I live in Poland and will be meeting my friends from the US in Athens next month. We are spending a couple of days there before we take our weeklong cruise. So I am trying to gather as much practical information as possible before our trip.
Sebastian My husband and I would like to thank you for your fantastic public transport in Athens. We just returned from a 3 day visit and it really helped
One of my friends who’s in Greece now shared your channel with me. I’m SO glad he did! I agree with others and wish there was a channel this real and informative for every tourist destination! One idea for a video would be to talk about the Greek holidays and festivals in Athens throughout the year and maybe the pros/cons of each season. Thanks for sharing such valuable info. :) Erikka
For those who want to avoid the 9EUR metro fare from the airport: The increased fare only applies for the leg between airport and the next station, called Koropi. If you board the metro at Koropi, the regular 1.20EUR fare applies. So you might feel tempted to walk the distance from the airport to Koropi. Be warned that is not possible; there is no walkable path, it's all multi-lane roads without any space left for pedestrians, and it's quite a long distance anyway. But there is another option: Take a bus from the airport to Koropi metro station. Be warned it's NOT one of the buses that go into the city centre which most tourists use, those are recognizable by line numbers beginning with an X. It is a regional bus run by KTEL Attiki which goes to Rafina. The bus stop is downstairs from the entrance of the walkway that connects to the metro station, next to the Sofitel. Ask the drivers which one goes to Rafina, and tell them you want to go to Koropi metro stop. The regional bus costs 2EUR extra, but overall you save 6EUR.
Timetables for the blue line are here : stasy.gr/en/timetables/line-3/ For now it says the last metro departs from the airport at 1:10am on Friday night and Saturday night. But better double check this before coming over ;-)
I could really use that cruise port to Athens transportation video! We’re docked there at the end of May. Has it been posted somewhere and I’m missing it?
Thanks for all of this practical information! I am an American, but have been living in Poland for the past 10 years. Next month I will be meeting 3 of my friends from the US in Athens. We will arrive at the airport there within just a couple of hours of one another. Then we will travel together to our rented apartment or hotel. After a couple of days in Athens we will then leave on a 7 day cruise of the Greek Isles. The information in this video is super helpful and I forwarded it to my travel companions.
anxiously awaiting your new video to get to the cruise port! We loved your videos on which hotels/neighborhoods to stay in and we're hoping to stay in Monastiraki near the Agora just before our cruise. Wondering if we should plan to grab a taxi or the metro to get to the cruise port. Also, hoping to be dropped off as close as possible to our ship terminal! Thanks in advance for your tips!!!

Thank you so much, Sebastian for your wonderful helpful videos! I was curious about the metro tickets for three days, which include the airport… we are staying for a week, so would it still be valid?

Thank you, my wife and I and some friends will be in Athens Greece this July 2024. I have already downloaded the app you suggested and even used it to see the charge from our hotel to a dive shop I wish to go to. Its about 8 euros. ;-)
My friend you are excellent. The way you deliver info is so detailed. You have basically helped me plan my entire trip. One question - my ferry arrives from Santorini to Piraeus at 11:30 pm at night. Will i get the x96 bus from the port to the airport at midnight? Google maps shows no scheduled buses
Is it the M1 or the M3 line to get to City Center (Acropolis, etc)? Looks like there might be a stop on both for Monastiraki Square or do you suggest we take blue line to Syntagma Square? Deciding whether to do on our own (in port 7-6p) or take Georges Taxi for an excursion? I am sure there are benefits to both but seeking your recommendation :). Thank you
Thank you for all the information provided by this channel. I seeking information on the bus X80, running from Syntagma Square to Piraeus cruise port, does this bus runs in the month of February and March. Thank you so much.
Thank you Sebastian, your videos are so informative. We are coming by cruise ship in October, would it be best to take a taxi from the port to take the metro to see the sites around the acropolis? There are 9 of us traveling and perhaps the shared fare would make taxi travel more affordable and easy.
I am so glad I came across your video, I wanted to get instructions from a local. I especially needed information with transportation and mobility. I have reserved a trip to Athens in February. I don't know what the weather will be like, but would the metro still be crowded in the Winter season? Also does the public transport (trams/ metros/ buses) operate on Sundays regularly? thank you
Hi Lilly ! 1. February weather : 10-15 degrees, mainly sunny 2. Metro not crowded at all except for work rush hour, so 7:30am-9:30am and 3:30pm-6pm. 3. Less public transport on Sunday but still decent enough. One metro every 10min roughly. Hope this helps ! Wonderful video. Subscribed your channel sir. Could you please let me know the weather in Athens in between 5 to 7 November normally? Me and my wife will visit to Athens. Can we need long coat or heavy jackets. Regards
This is super helpful thank you! I am wondering what you would recommend if we are going to be in Athens for more than three days and still need round trip transportation to the airport. Should we just buy the one way trips and a 5 day pass separately? Thank you so much!
Thanks for your very informative videos. We're going to Athens for the first time next year (2025). One small question. Do you also have to validate your ticket when you exit a tram?
I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel - when I already felt I knew enough for my October 4 day trip - but most of the info was from US travellers - absolutely nothing against them but local is local :-) I have a big dilemma about my trip. I will be staying quite far from the centre (Palamidiou street) with not a great connections. Normally it's not a problem, I consider public transport abroad a part of the overall experience, however I have booked 3 tours and I need to be at particular places at certain times. In Google maps I checked I would need 1 or 2 buses each way and after seeing your video, I am not so sure I should rely on being on time and I am rethinking taking a taxi. Can I have your opinion here? In general I LOVE using public transport but of course, I would hate missing my tours...
Hey ! Thx for the kind words. I wouldnt rely too much on buses. I would walk from Palamidiou to the Metaxourgeio metro station. Should be a 10min walk, and Metaxourgeio is on the red line, connected to the Syntagma and Acropoli stations. Hope this helps !
Thanks for the info prior to my trip to Athens end of May 2024. Just to confirm you said taxi can go Santorini Euro 20 is that correct? How about returning to hotel is there many taxi in Santorini? Thanks.
First of all THANK YOU for sharing such wonderful and helpful information! I have watched several of your videos! Can you please tell me the best way to Syntagna Square (we plan to walk to attractions from there) from the Piraeus Cruise Terminal? Thank you in advance.
Thanks for all useful informations Sebastian. I am looking forward for my trip to Athens. I've got a one more question (could be quite silly one): When I buy 5day ticket, for instance, is it working right since the moment when I buy it or do I have to activate it somehow?
Thanks for the video. I am planning to visit Greece between 23rd March and 1st April. Planning for trip to Meteora on 25th March. Considering it's a national holiday will the monasteries and public transport working on that day? Any insights would be highly appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks for all the excellent videos, they are so useful and your presentation is fantastic! I am looking to buy 3 days metro tickets with round trips to airport, may I ask if there is discount for children please? If yes, are the tickets also available at the machine?
So I just got back from Greece. I used the metro twice. I also live in a place that doesn’t have a subway system so I’m not sure how it all works. How do you know which metro to get on when they are not color coded? Maybe there isn’t literally suppose to be a blue line on the train? For instance, I thought I should be looking for a train with a blue line on it but the one I got on yesterday to head to the airport was orange or red. The one I got on in Koropi after the car rental place dropped me off there to head into the city didn’t have a blue stripe either and it had the number 2 written on it. I thought I was on the wrong train so I got off. By time I got to my stop, my ticket had expired. The ticket master guy let me out but he said it is normally a 72 euro fine if the ticket is expired 😮 whoops but thankfully he let me out with no penalty 😂
Love the video! I just have some questions: Why exactly do i really need the "Airport ticket"? It seems that i can buy the standard ticket instead and jump in to the route 3 metro. Or maybe i can't enter the "airport metro station" with a classic ticket. I have two more days to understand... Help
Hi 👋 . Thank you so much for posting these really informative videos. We are arriving in Greece shortly and staying in Pallini for 3 nights before heading to Leonidio. We plan on travelling into Athens Centre for two days and returning again at night. I'm trying to find out how much we can expect to pay for the metro ticket either as a day return or two single tickets for this metro journey 🤔
Buying single tickets for each ride would be 1.20€ each ticket, so 2.40€ per day per person. The daily ticket is 4.20€ per person. So in your case, getting single tickets makes more sense.
Hello, This may be a silly question but if you buy a 24 hour ticket, does that mean you can use transport as many journeys as you like in 24 hours? or do you buy a 24 hour ticket with, for example, 5 trips on it? And for a 90 minute ticket, the same in 90 minutes? Thank you
Hi, I have a question (excellent videos by the way), we are staying in Athens a few days before taking a cruise starting from Piraeus. Would you recommend taxi or subway to get to Piraeus? I realise the cruise port is 20 or so minutes walk from the station but we do travel light. Appreciate your guidance. Keith
are taxis readily available from cruise ports? do you have a video that talks about cruise ports and taking the trains/taxies to city center and back to the cruise ports? thank you!
For Piraeus station from the cruise port you haven't upload, does it just mean we need to walk around 30 minutes getting off the cruise to the station, and begin our metro journey?
is there any advantage of buying an anonymous Athena plastic card over tickets? I want to buy a bundle of 5 tickets plus a return ticket to the airport to be used over 17 days. I plan to use the 5 single tickets for my ride to the ferry (not on the same day as my airport ride), from the ferry, and possibly to and from the national archeological museum which is a bit far from my hotel. as always, i love your videos. they have been very helpful & reassuring.
Does the 3-day ticket start when you activate it, and it remains valid for 72 hours from the time of activation? Or it’s only valid until the end of the day you purchased it + 2 additional days?
Hi Sebastian, thank you for this very helpful information. For a first timer like me, is it comfortable to use the metro going to Syntagma with a big luggage or better to ride a taxi via FreeNow/Uber?
Thanks for this video! I was interested in getting a 30 day card that includes the airport. Can I buy that from the machine? Or do I need to pick that up somewhere else? Also, would that only include one roundtrip for the airport? I was hoping for 3 trips. Thanks!
@@GreeceExplained We're coming the last week in February until Mid-March. Our base for the trip will be in Koukaki, but we plan to fly to Crete for a few days, as well as to Thessaloniki. That means we'll have 3 round-trips for the airport in Athens. This is why I wondered if the 30 day card with the airport option would work for us. As far as trips within Athens, I don't know yet where we'll go. I understand we can walk to many places, but I was hoping to use public transit to get places like museums in Kolonaki, as well as other museums and attractions in town. I was even thinking we would use the bus system, but after watching your video I'm concerned that will not be the best option. Thanks again!
@@vanessazhong Okay so you need to buy 3 round trip airport tickets each. What I meant when I said "the round trip airport ticket is valid for 30 days" is that you can do the way BACK to the airport up to 30 days after having used the ticket for the first time.
Hi Seb, I have a question. For the 3 day tickets, should the airport round trip be covered within these 3 days? Or is it 3 days of Athens city+ an airport round trip for any day?
The 3 days start counting down when you scan your ticket for the first time. So if you first scan it on June 1st, it'll expire on June 4th. Hope this helps ! In case you wanna support my channel, here's a link to make a one time donation : www.buymeacoffee.com/greeceexplained
I was in Athens three weeks ago for one week. I used taxi around 15 times. Almost all of the Taxi drivers were friendly and honest. I've been scammed two times. Both were Gypsy taxi drivers. One drop me to Monastraki when I wanted go Psirri and double charged me (10 euro). Other one took me from Omnion to Olympion Temple for 25 euros, which I believe 5 times more expensive. Never trust Gypsy taxi drivers and always ask for taximetre. Athens is a beatiful and extremly safe city just be careful about this classic taxi scames.
Hello Sebastian, I arrive in Athen June 1-June 13 2024. If I understood you correctly, I purchase round trip from the airport 16€ I have 30 days to use this ticket?
If i buy a 5 day public transport ticket from the airport metro station, will it be valid only for 5 days from the moment i buy it or 5 days from first using it?
Hello my friend! My new wife and I are flying into Athens and taking your advice to stay at Athens21. Can you give me details to take the metro for 2 days and then we will be off to Santorini! Thank you!
@@GreeceExplained My friend! Very much looking forward to a great time!! When we fly to Santorini it looks like the Aegean Airlines is close to the North side of the airport. Is that true? Thank you for all your help!

are taxis readily available from cruise ports? do you have a video that talks about cruise ports and taking the trains/taxies to city center and back to the cruise ports? thank you!
Yup, plenty of taxis to be found at the Athens cruise port
If I buy the three-day Tourist Ticket can I use the return to the airport OUTSIDE of the three days or just within the 72hr validity of the city pass?
Only within the 72h
For Piraeus station from the cruise port you haven't upload, does it just mean we need to walk around 30 minutes getting off the cruise to the station, and begin our metro journey?
Yes either you walk for 30min and then metro, or taxi directly from the cruise port.
is there any advantage of buying an anonymous Athena plastic card over tickets? I want to buy a bundle of 5 tickets plus a return ticket to the airport to be used over 17 days. I plan to use the 5 single tickets for my ride to the ferry (not on the same day as my airport ride), from the ferry, and possibly to and from the national archeological museum which is a bit far from my hotel. as always, i love your videos. they have been very helpful & reassuring.
No there's no particular advantage. Its the same thing.
Forgot to mention some taxi drivers will ask where u going and some say not going that way
Sebastián Athen Station and Larissa Station are the same? Getting tickets to Meteora from the HELLENICTRAIN -
Yes its the same :-)
Thank you
Are the Metro station names labeled in English or all in Greek?
Both
What are your thoughts of the express bus X95 from the airport to syntagma square?
I talk about it in this video : ua-cam.com/video/YpOv3_6uEX0/v-deo.html
Does the 3-day ticket start when you activate it, and it remains valid for 72 hours from the time of activation? Or it’s only valid until the end of the day you purchased it + 2 additional days?
It only start counting down after you validated it for the first time.
Is there a montly Ticket or something similar? I'm going there for about 6 weeks and this would be great!
Nope there isn't. So I guess you should get a 10 ride card each (12€) until it runs out, and then buy another one etc.
Hi Sebastian, thank you for this very helpful information. For a first timer like me, is it comfortable to use the metro going to Syntagma with a big luggage or better to ride a taxi via FreeNow/Uber?
This video should answer your question : ua-cam.com/video/YpOv3_6uEX0/v-deo.html
@@GreeceExplained Just watched it yesterday after asking this question! Hahah thank you so much!
Sebastian can you buy multiple 90min tickets that you can validate later on in the day to save you visiting the machines?
Yes you can
Thanks for this video! I was interested in getting a 30 day card that includes the airport. Can I buy that from the machine? Or do I need to pick that up somewhere else? Also, would that only include one roundtrip for the airport? I was hoping for 3 trips. Thanks!
Which trips are you planning to do exactly and on which dates ? That ll help me answering your question.
The airport round trip should happen WITHIN the 3 days.
@@GreeceExplained Thankyou ❤️
If I buy the 3 day pass including airport, 2 days June 1-3 then June 12-13 is it still valid and for the airport? Thanks for all your videos!
The 3 days start counting down when you scan your ticket for the first time.
So if you first scan it on June 1st, it'll expire on June 4th.
Hope this helps ! In case you wanna support my channel, here's a link to make a one time donation : www.buymeacoffee.com/greeceexplained
Hi!! I am wondering if the three-day pass works by day or by hour? (I mean 72 hours after the first use or 3 days) Thanks!!
By hour
I was in Athens three weeks ago for one week. I used taxi around 15 times. Almost all of the Taxi drivers were friendly and honest. I've been scammed two times. Both were Gypsy taxi drivers. One drop me to Monastraki when I wanted go Psirri and double charged me (10 euro). Other one took me from Omnion to Olympion Temple for 25 euros, which I believe 5 times more expensive. Never trust Gypsy taxi drivers and always ask for taximetre. Athens is a beatiful and extremly safe city just be careful about this classic taxi scames.
How can you tell gypsy taxi
U can identify one when u see one@@Paintguy1983
Would you recommend hop on hop off
Bus to get to different sites if we are only in Athens for a day?
Sure. But you can also walk ... Distances are not huge.
Hello Sebastian, I arrive in Athen June 1-June 13 2024. If I understood you correctly, I purchase round trip from the airport 16€ I have 30 days to use this ticket?
Correct
If i buy a 5 day public transport ticket from the airport metro station, will it be valid only for 5 days from the moment i buy it or 5 days from first using it?
That's one of the things I explain in this vid : ua-cam.com/video/8-eNtA6m_6A/v-deo.html
Are the 3 day or 5 day tickets offer unlimited rides or do they just have a later expiration date?
Unlimited rides ! :-)
Awesome!
Im planning to buy the 5 days pass ticket. Can I buy it straight from the airport & use it on the X95 bus ? Thanks
I'm pretty sure the 5 day pass doesnt cover the X95. But yes, you can buy the 5 day ticket at the airport.
I am German. Can I use the 5-day card?
Sure. Everyone can
Is uber available & reliable? And is it safe to walk around in the evening?
Yes and yes

Havent done that video yet ;-)

Please correct me if I’m wrong. One way ticket from the airport to the port it would cost me €9. From the port to Syntagma station € 1.20 and from Syntagma to the airport €9.

Do kids have to have buy tickets also?
