Thank you for this video. I moved to Cape Town a year ago and I must admit that socially, its nothing like Gauteng or KwaZulu-Natal. It is extremely difficult to make friends here as people tend to stick to their "old mates". Having said that though, I must say that it is the most efficiently run city that I have ever lived in and its absolutely beautiful :-)
Been in Helderberg 8 years. We’ve made quite a few friends through school (our son), our hobbies, and also because hubby already had relatives here. I’ve got more friends here than what I had in Joburg.
Im a Cape Townian and we dont tend to cling to friends from years gone. It depends on what you like and are into, im sure you will make many friends you can hang out with, braai and have a few beers if thats your thing.
As a CAPETONIAN, I loves this heading as our resources is running out anyway due to the influx of immigrants,so i hope that they follow the headlines and stay away as there are already thousands and thousands of CAPETONIANs who are jobless,homeless,bad healthcare service and crime rates our takeaways policeforce cannot handle.
We're English, we moved to Cape Town from London 12 years ago. Best thing we ever did. The UK has had it's day I'm afraid. Even the English cant afford to live there anymore.
Glad you loved the move! My wife and I grew up in Pretoria and East London (SA) respectively and were then in London for 9 years. Loved it! Made the decision to come back and ended up choosing Cape Town. As you say, best decision! But my mates still in the UK say it’s different now. And yes, tougher.

Both my sons emigrated to Europe (Netherlands) to study and settle, as soon as they finished their studies they moved back to CT and can't stop talking about how much happier they are now living and working in Cape Town.
I have been living in Cape Town since early childhood. The Northern suburbs beyond Tygerberg-koppie (Bellville/Durbanville suburbs) enjoy way less wind than most other suburbs. Rainfall is also less than most other suburbs. Floods in most Durbanville suburbs is unknown. Newlands situated in the Southern suburbs has the highest rainfall. The city of Cape Town and the Atlantic coast are subjected to the worst wind conditions. We rent furnished apartments in the Northern Suburbs and the current semigration to the Western Cape is observable.
We semi-grated from KZN to the Western Cape, in 2021. We lived on a farm in the beautiful Boland area for a year but we then decided to move to Cape Town. It took a while to find a reasonable house to rent & we eventually found a place in the Northern Suburbs. We love the Mediterranean climate, so much cooler than Durban or Jhb.
Yeah, moved here from PTA and the cooler climate is definitely a plus. Moreover, CPT just feels to have so much more texture to it than any other place I've lived in South Africa. Just a shame that there are so many people living destitute out here and local government doesn't seem to care at all. That's a lot of South Africa, I guess.

From JHB, Lived in Stellenbosch for 2 years for my daughter's schooling..did great business, met fabulous people and simply loved it there. Fabulous scenery. What got me was the unsafe Highway conditions and endless squatters. I am back in JHB and I feel much safer travelling on the JHB highways and roads.
I dived right into Cape Town all the way from East London and i think it depends on what type of person you are. It can be cliquey but one has to learn to fight to be where they want to be, and take up space. I must say Cape Town was one of the best decision I have made. I love it here !

I had a student from Capetown, (I live in the Northern Hemisphere) and she arrived in September. By November she had gone into a full blown clinical depression and had to return to Capetown she missed it so much. The weather and closed in feeling of where she was living here really affected her. She told me that every morning on her way to work she could see Table Mountain and the Ocean .
Fair Cape refers to the natural beauty of the Cape. I think it was Sir Frances Drake who coined the term, " The Fairest Cape in the whole circumference of the earth!"

The pothole pandemic started in Mpumallanga and has reached Gauteng. There is a booming industry for fixing damaged under carriage of vehicles. It is dangerous travelling at night, not so much because of few streetlights not working but because of the absence of roadmarkings. When visiting WP I thought I am in a first world country. If you like hotter weather and less wind, the inland suburbs and adjacent towns like Stellenbosch are hotter and less windy, but only about 30 min drive down to a beach (but finding parking can be difficult) or you can even cycle there( but then you have to keep an eye on your bicycle). Being in the Winelands you are surrounded by wine farms and more mountains with better and safer (re. crime) hiking & mtn biking than the Table mountain range
Visited CPT a couple of times , I like the progressive attitude towards the city but you have to be a at least a millionaire to enjoy everything it has to offer. Especially if want buy and live in a reasonable house.🏡

Beautiful place to retire when older but there are few job opportunities and very low pay for younger people. Rolling blackouts are also shrinking the economy here very quickly.
I never got the "cliquey" comment. I hear it a lot but I just don't see it... I live in the Northern suburbs so maybe it's area based? I know some people are confused by the fact that we can be very friendly in bars, or on beaches, but that doesn't necessarily mean we want to exchange numbers, keep in contact etc. I always tell people that if you talk to everyone you can't be friends with everyone.
All factors considered in a holistic empirical fashion,not only looking at that which is negative,in a world wide focus,Cape Town was adjudged as being the second best city in the world,after New York.Show me any large city in the world which is not considered to be over populated and does not have heavy traffic..(population of about 5 million and larger,like Cape Town).Most coastal cities tend to be windy seasonally .The wind rids the city of pollution and thereby adds to your health...not to mention the sporting possibilities which it provides,eg. sailing,surfing and kite board sailing. Please do deepen your knowledge of geography in general,including ocean currents,and you will realize that there is a variation in sea temp depending on which beach you go to...
All the negatives you mention above are indeed true, as well as crazy property prices. However, there are numerous good and enticing aspects to Cape Town also.
For someone like myself who has moved to Cape Town, 10 months ago, not having any friends or family down here at all. The best advice I can give someone looking to move here is make sure you prepare yourself mentally. It won't be easy but with a positive mindset setting up clear goals and objectives, not getting distracted and staying focused on the plan, it gets better. The biggest factor that made it easier to cope with things was MONEY. Your salary is a BIG FACTOR so make sure you moving for a job that pays you good enough to enjoy nice things once in a while. With all the vibes and the scenes Cape Town is known for, you need money to do some things here and there otherwise you'll be miserable trying to save for a life that you might not have the opportunity to live if you were to die. Love and enjoy your life. I'm grateful I have the opportunity to do that. God bless your people❤
LOVE LOVE LOVE Cape Town winters. And "cold" needs to be defined. I think "cold" is less than 5 degrees Celsius. Very few days or nights a year are less than 5 degrees in Cape Town. Usually only when there are snow on the mountains. It usually snows 2 or 3 times a year (high on the mountains) and the snow rarely lasts for more than 3 days.
Been to many countries but living in Cape Town has the best lifestyle ever. Best social life and quality of life. Obviously you just have to be streetwise in dangerous areas.
I really don't mind not having friends when i move to Cape Town, my son and i are a perfect match as long as we can live close to a church, soccer academy and shopping center 😅
In the areas you mentioned, you left out the Western Seaboard. Milnerton, Blouberg, Melkbos, etc. Close to the cold sea , windy, and not that hot in summer.
Depending where in Capetown you want to settle. Visit Eastern cape recently, and boy oh boy how did we miss cape Town. Service from restaurants to government is like day and night. Here in CT the restaurants are much better and food service and quality of food is higher than Eastern cape. Never I dug for potholes in my life. Man on the flippen highway, and nobody stops at traffic lights and stopstreets. The only move will be to garden route if you want value and peace for your money
I’ve been in Cape Town for 10 years. What I hate about it is: it’s almost impossible to make friends, the wind, the reckless driving (including the taxis), bureaucracy, no decent public transport and obviously load shedding 😅. What I love about it is beautiful nature, amazing food, everything is near and despite being a big metropolis sometimes it feels more like a little town. you don’t feel overwhelmed by huge herds of people around you like in some other places.
I'm a Spanish living in Johannesburg and I can assure you Public City transport in Capetown is decent,and this city is so cleann.I hope to find an opportunity to move there

Difficult one to answer. Guess it depends on the industry. I would reach out to recruitment agencies and build good relationships with them so that you’re top of mind. Then connect with people on LinkedIn and trawl through sites like Pnet and Careers24. Also wouldn’t hurt to visit companies that you’d like to work for and ask for tours, meet HR, drop off CV, etc.
I lived in Joburg which sucked, Pretoria which was a bit better, Kimberley which is nothing more than a one horse town and Cape Town which is the best place to live in SA, by a country mile. Now living in London and miss Cape Town almost every day
There are ways. I think people get caught up in all there is to do here. Also strong networks around the schools and universities are created by people who grew up here. But if you join clubs, groups or neighbourhood organisations that have interests common to yours, you can make friends!
@@brandonleroux6059kak man, you can make friends easily just by not being a prick and being open to new people. Find people that like what you like. There are apps for this that make it so easy. We have met people at Cape Town stadium every time we went there, even if it was just the people sitting next to us. More often than not we end up arranging a braai as well. This has been the case at festivals, concerts, etc. Just be open and friendly, and CHAT to people😂

The Benguela Current brings cold water from the arctic up the West Coast resulting in a cool sea breeze (or gale depending on the day 😏) which helps some of the grapes stay lovely, fresh and fruity. We’ve also got so many diverse regions, soils and conditions in and around the Cape. It allows use to produce a bunch of wines that are…well…pretty good! Cheers 🍷

Have been lucky/unlucky enough to experience both. Needed op and physio for dislocated finger and lacerated hand while playing rugby. Super-impressed with NHS although wait times were fairly long. Private medical care here is excellent and my experience has been that wait times haven’t been quite as long as NHS. The various medical aid options can be a little daunting. I would suggest speaking to a financial advisor to help match your plan to your needs and also get gap cover. This is an insurance product that fills that gaps between what medical aids will cover for procedures and what doctors may charge (sometimes doctors rates are higher than what medical aid covers). Gap cover has saved us serious additional expense a few times.

I am wondering if you could suggest “seniors communities” where one can buy a 2 bedroom bungalow in a safe area. As well, what are the “nicest” areas of Cape Town to live in - be it for an apartment or condo rental or purchase? Do you know of a real estate agent to whom I could speak? You should check Stellenbosch or Durbanville. Durbanville is probably your best bet. You should look into it for sure. Great service delivery, safe, a lot of shopping centres and everything else around.

Id like to address the idea that CT is clique’e. That’s true even for locals. But understand, my family and many other Capies came here long ago ... and never moved. The place lends itself to people who either can’t or won’t move. My own family came here 300 odd yeArs ago and have scarcely moved more than 100km from where they settled. Myself, I’ve only been out of the province twice in my life and never out of the country. We are incredibly loyal to each other. If you come from the North you are a stranger who needs to adopt Capie ‘houding’. That means looking people in the eye no matter their status, and see them as significant. Overall Capies value people more than things, an ethic not often shared by people from the North and East.
Moving there just to job hunt and start a new life as I have a child on the way and complications with the mother of my child I just want my kid and I’m sad that I won’t get to see her but I need this new life I’m 24

I think there’s so much to do and so much going on that people tend to focus on the next thing. Joining a group or club that interests you will allow you to meet likeminded people and you should be able to make friends relatively easily.
The service delivery statement is debatable, many say that in Cape Town the poor areas, where most Cape Townians live, have sub standard service delivery. Otherwise great video.
The City’s draft budget for the coming year is out now. Find it on their website and comment on it. Seems like a decent chunk going towards direct investment in poorer areas. Lots of infrastructure spend which was perhaps lacking in the past given the amount of people who have moved here.
The same people like to "say things" but yet those low-income areas continue to expand. That is something they should realise makes greater demands on the budget for that province and city. Who is in control of the allocation of funds for low-income areas? Think.

I moved from JHB to Cape Town 11 years ago. I have no regrets. I stayed in Century City for five of those 11 years, no regrets. Everything at your doorstep - shops, movies, gym, etc. It's a bit pricey but I felt so safe there.
i was sold a lie , im from gauteng jhb . people are full of nonsense , clicky . It is extremely expensive in terms of accommodation . it is at least 2.5x more expensive than jhb in terms of housing .

There are none here. A one room bachelor pad (technically a garage) will cost you no less than - R8000 a month God taxes us here for the view and the "great quality of life" All that money you will save on other bills will be spent on this one bill called rent. Cape townians are outdoorsy people because they are too poor to do anything that costs money, and their apartments are too small to invite anybody home. This adds to the social anxiety of making friends. We moved to Knysna from Cape Town 5 years ago. Love it here. Nothing against Cape Town at all except for wind in Summer. Don’t miss that at all.

I had a student from Capetown, (I live in the Northern Hemisphere) and she arrived in September. By November she had gone into a full blown clinical depression and had to return to Capetown she missed it so much. The weather and closed in feeling of where she was living here really affected her. She told me that every morning on her way to work she could see Table Mountain and the Ocean .
The weather sounds like San Francisco, CA.
A Californian described Cape Town as a cross between San Francisco and San Diego, which sounds nice.

The pothole pandemic started in Mpumallanga and has reached Gauteng. There is a booming industry for fixing damaged under carriage of vehicles. It is dangerous travelling at night, not so much because of few streetlights not working but because of the absence of roadmarkings. When visiting WP I thought I am in a first world country. If you like hotter weather and less wind, the inland suburbs and adjacent towns like Stellenbosch are hotter and less windy, but only about 30 min drive down to a beach (but finding parking can be difficult) or you can even cycle there( but then you have to keep an eye on your bicycle). Being in the Winelands you are surrounded by wine farms and more mountains with better and safer (re. crime) hiking & mtn biking than the Table mountain range

Visited CPT a couple of times , I like the progressive attitude towards the city but you have to be a at least a millionaire to enjoy everything it has to offer. Especially if want buy and live in a reasonable house.🏡

Cape Town is a mediterranean climate, hot summers, cold-ish winters. I lived here most of my life, never moving.
Beautiful place to retire when older but there are few job opportunities and very low pay for younger people. Rolling blackouts are also shrinking the economy here very quickly.
Cape Town is continuously adding more jobs than the rest of the country - we're making things happen! Watch this space!

I never got the "cliquey" comment. I hear it a lot but I just don't see it... I live in the Northern suburbs so maybe it's area based? I know some people are confused by the fact that we can be very friendly in bars, or on beaches, but that doesn't necessarily mean we want to exchange numbers, keep in contact etc. I always tell people that if you talk to everyone you can't be friends with everyone.
All factors considered in a holistic empirical fashion,not only looking at that which is negative,in a world wide focus,Cape Town was adjudged as being the second best city in the world,after New York.Show me any large city in the world which is not considered to be over populated and does not have heavy traffic..(population of about 5 million and larger,like Cape Town).Most coastal cities tend to be windy seasonally .The wind rids the city of pollution and thereby adds to your health...not to mention the sporting possibilities which it provides,eg. sailing,surfing and kite board sailing. Please do deepen your knowledge of geography in general,including ocean currents,and you will realize that there is a variation in sea temp depending on which beach you go to...
All the negatives you mention above are indeed true, as well as crazy property prices. However, there are numerous good and enticing aspects to Cape Town also.

For someone like myself who has moved to Cape Town, 10 months ago, not having any friends or family down here at all. The best advice I can give someone looking to move here is make sure you prepare yourself mentally. It won't be easy but with a positive mindset setting up clear goals and objectives, not getting distracted and staying focused on the plan, it gets better. The biggest factor that made it easier to cope with things was MONEY. Your salary is a BIG FACTOR so make sure you moving for a job that pays you good enough to enjoy nice things once in a while. With all the vibes and the scenes Cape Town is known for, you need money to do some things here and there otherwise you'll be miserable trying to save for a life that you might not have the opportunity to live if you were to die. Love and enjoy your life. I'm grateful I have the opportunity to do that. God bless your people❤
LOVE LOVE LOVE Cape Town winters. And "cold" needs to be defined. I think "cold" is less than 5 degrees Celsius. Very few days or nights a year are less than 5 degrees in Cape Town. Usually only when there are snow on the mountains. It usually snows 2 or 3 times a year (high on the mountains) and the snow rarely lasts for more than 3 days.
Been to many countries but living in Cape Town has the best lifestyle ever. Best social life and quality of life. Obviously you just have to be streetwise in dangerous areas.
I really don't mind not having friends when i move to Cape Town, my son and i are a perfect match as long as we can live close to a church, soccer academy and shopping center 😅

In the areas you mentioned, you left out the Western Seaboard. Milnerton, Blouberg, Melkbos, etc. Close to the cold sea , windy, and not that hot in summer.
Depending where in Capetown you want to settle. Visit Eastern cape recently, and boy oh boy how did we miss cape Town. Service from restaurants to government is like day and night. Here in CT the restaurants are much better and food service and quality of food is higher than Eastern cape. Never I dug for potholes in my life. Man on the flippen highway, and nobody stops at traffic lights and stopstreets. The only move will be to garden route if you want value and peace for your money

I’ve been in Cape Town for 10 years. What I hate about it is: it’s almost impossible to make friends, the wind, the reckless driving (including the taxis), bureaucracy, no decent public transport and obviously load shedding 😅. What I love about it is beautiful nature, amazing food, everything is near and despite being a big metropolis sometimes it feels more like a little town. you don’t feel overwhelmed by huge herds of people around you like in some other places.
I'm a Spanish living in Johannesburg and I can assure you Public City transport in Capetown is decent,and this city is so cleann.I hope to find an opportunity to move there

I love living in Marina da Gama Cape town and wouldn't want to live anywhere else...it's the best place in the world to live and the best quality of life.

Difficult one to answer. Guess it depends on the industry. I would reach out to recruitment agencies and build good relationships with them so that you’re top of mind. Then connect with people on LinkedIn and trawl through sites like Pnet and Careers24. Also wouldn’t hurt to visit companies that you’d like to work for and ask for tours, meet HR, drop off CV, etc.

I lived in Joburg which sucked, Pretoria which was a bit better, Kimberley which is nothing more than a one horse town and Cape Town which is the best place to live in SA, by a country mile. Now living in London and miss Cape Town almost every day

There are ways. I think people get caught up in all there is to do here. Also strong networks around the schools and universities are created by people who grew up here. But if you join clubs, groups or neighbourhood organisations that have interests common to yours, you can make friends!
@@brandonleroux6059kak man, you can make friends easily just by not being a prick and being open to new people. Find people that like what you like. There are apps for this that make it so easy. We have met people at Cape Town stadium every time we went there, even if it was just the people sitting next to us. More often than not we end up arranging a braai as well.
This has been the case at festivals, concerts, etc. Just be open and friendly, and CHAT to people😂

If Cape Town didn't have the climate it does it would not be able to produce some of the best wines in the world.
Totally! The Benguela Current brings cold water from the arctic up the West Coast resulting in a cool sea breeze (or gale depending on the day 😏) which helps some of the grapes stay lovely, fresh and fruity.
We’ve also got so many diverse regions, soils and conditions in and around the Cape. It allows use to produce a bunch of wines that are…well…pretty good!

Have been lucky/unlucky enough to experience both.
Needed op and physio for dislocated finger and lacerated hand while playing rugby. Super-impressed with NHS although wait times were fairly long.
Private medical care here is excellent and my experience has been that wait times haven’t been quite as long as NHS.
The various medical aid options can be a little daunting. I would suggest speaking to a financial advisor to help match your plan to your needs and also get gap cover. This is an insurance product that fills that gaps between what medical aids will cover for procedures and what doctors may charge (sometimes doctors rates are higher than what medical aid covers). Gap cover has saved us serious additional expense a few times.

I am a 58 year old Canadian - single. I have visited Cape Town several times and have friends there. I am unhappy with the Canadian public health system and am thinking of moving permanently. I am wondering if you could suggest “seniors communities” where one can buy a 2 bedroom bungalow in a safe area. As well, what are the “nicest” areas of Cape Town to live in - be it for an apartment or condo rental or purchase? Do you know of a real estate agent to whom I could speak? You should check Stellenbosch or Durbanville. Durbanville is probably your best bet. You should look into it for sure. Great service delivery, safe, a lot of shopping centres and everything else around.

Id like to address the idea that CT is clique’e. That’s true even for locals. But understand, my family and many other Capies came here long ago ... and never moved. The place lends itself to people who either can’t or won’t move. My own family came here 300 odd yeArs ago and have scarcely moved more than 100km from where they settled. Myself, I’ve only been out of the province twice in my life and never out of the country. We are incredibly loyal to each other. If you come from the North you are a stranger who needs to adopt Capie ‘houding’. That means looking people in the eye no matter their status, and see them as significant. Overall Capies value people more than things, an ethic not often shared by people from the North and East.
Not sure I agree around a slightly reduced cost of living, having been in Ctn now for 9 months - it’s expense here… But beautiful.

Its easier to dig a hole and more affordable to sleep under a tree on the mountain.

I think there’s so much to do and so much going on that people tend to focus on the next thing. Joining a group or club that interests you will allow you to meet likeminded people and you should be able to make friends relatively easily.

The service delivery statement is debatable, many say that in Cape Town the poor areas, where most Cape Townians live, have sub standard service delivery. Otherwise great video.
The City’s draft budget for the coming year is out now. Find it on their website and comment on it. Seems like a decent chunk going towards direct investment in poorer areas. Lots of infrastructure spend which was perhaps lacking in the past given the amount of people who have moved here.
The same people like to "say things" but yet those low-income areas continue to expand. That is something they should realise makes greater demands on the budget for that province and city. Who is in control of the allocation of funds for low-income areas? Think.
You get what you pay for.

There is nowhere safe in Cape Town
I moved from JHB to Cape Town 11 years ago. I have no regrets. I stayed in Century City for five of those 11 years, no regrets. Everything at your doorstep - shops, movies, gym, etc. It's a bit pricey but I felt so safe there.

😂 - not a weather man! Weather can be all seasons in a day! During January though, typically 25 to 35 degrees Celsius and either calm to very strong South Easter wind.

Winter rainfall means no clouds at all during summer...ever!!
If you like to be baked slowly or poached in wine then cape town is the place for you.
Despite needing one you never use an umbrella...too windy when wet.

- Vredehoek (posh mountain trolls)
- Milnerton (wind loving trolls)
- Camps bay (Posh beach trolls)
- and any other suburb not close to the mountain
If you like less wind then do stay in
- Sea Point (middle earth)
- Bantry bay (rich local non-beach trolls)
- Clifton 1 - 4 (rich foreign beach trolls)
If you like the sun to set at 3pm then by all means stay in
- Newlands (a.k.a - highgarden: mountain dwarfs - tree hugger elves)

If you are looking for cheap rents move to another city. There are none here.
A one room bachelor pad (technically a garage) will cost you no less than - R8000 a month
God taxes us here for the view and the "great quality of life"

Cape townians are outdoorsy people because they are too poor to do anything that costs money, and their apartments are too small to invite anybody home.
This adds to the social anxiety of making friends.
