Nico Rosberg: Retiring as F1 World Champion, What Next? | Ep.20

  • Nico is a Formula one legend. He competed in 206 Grand Prix’s, with 23 wins, 30 pole’s, 57 podiums, and over 1500 championship points. Nico’s World Championship win when driving alongside childhood friend Lewis Hamilton for Mercedes is one of the most iconic in the history of the sport, and saw him follow in the footsteps of his father Keke, who won the championship in 1982. It was in the days after this win that Nico announced his shock retirement, putting new meaning into finishing on the highest of highs. But that wasn’t the end. A serial angel investor and entrepreneur, Nico last week announced Rosberg Ventures, his new $75m Fund of Funds, a vehicle aimed at investing in leading funds to foster global startup innovation.
Nico was kind enough to host us at his offices in Monaco, a lovely change for the Business of Sport team. Aside from the obvious appeal, it was amazing to see him in his home environment, relaxed, motivated, and massively energetic, stitching us up on multiple occasions. He brings a truly unique perspective to the role of an athlete. This is sport, investment, leadership, culture, winning mentality. There is something in this for everyone

    In today’s show we discuss:
    The world of F1:
Growing up with a World Champion. How the success of his father Keke inspired a young Nico to become a Formula 1 World Champion.
What does it take to make it in F1? The karting scene for young drivers is very intense, and requires a lot of time away from friends, family and school.
What happened the first time Nico drove an F1 car?
How important is the car to the success of a driver? What is it like to be driving for the team that is dominating a season and operating in an environment of invincibility?
The challenge of creating equal opportunity in a team of two world class drivers. At the end of the day there will always be one who gets preferential treatment.
Why did Nico retire immediately after winning the 2016 championship?
    Mentality is key:
How to master the 1%’s. From constructing a fitness regime to optimally manage the best physique, to the weight of paint on a hemet, what do drivers do to get an edge?
Failure is really important. It is through missing out on pole, podiums, race wins that spurs you on to greater success and achievement.
The people around you can help create the most prepared mind, and sport is now embracing the presence of individuals specifically targeted with developing the ultimate mindset to live with pressure.
What happens when you achieve your ultimate dream? Learning how to enjoy the highs and manage the lows to build the strongest mentality required.
    Business success born from sport:
There are so many traits that translate from professional sport into the world of business. What are the key contributions of an athlete in an outside industry?
How has Nico built a career away from the race track in investment, entrepreneurship, and wider business? What are things that inspire him?
The launch of Rosberg Ventures $75m fund of funds and the ambitions Nico has for building bridges between corporate Europe and leading global startups.
Learning a new language; the work required to get into a new industry is not to be taken lightly. What was Nico’s transition like from athlete to businessman?

@@CinHalCedHerChance why do you think he screams entitled ? He seems humble by his previous and current actions I usually prefer logic and facts over emotions and he was like that in F1 He analyzed things thoroughly That's why many people said he seems cold But he was never entitled by the way he treated others and the efforts he put into achieving his goal which is winning the championship

The fact that he put literally 110% into Formula One not even paying attention to outside media or anything of that manner, Even somewhat distancing himself from his family and general life, makes his World Championship even more special to me. He spent so much time during this interview waiting for an opportunity to interrupt Nico and ask a stupid question, or try to give his opinion or analysis on something which was a lot of times just completely missing the mark.
Even to the point of being rude and disrespectful, "Respectfully, really!?!?!" With a crude facial expression as nico is trying to explain the cost cap.
Incredibly arrogant approach, it was really quite embarrassing to watch at times.
I felt bad for his co host and Nico, both of them having the grace to deal with childish behaviour when having a conversation. Not to mention how annoying he came across with his entitled mannerisms and speech
Please improve, you're interviewing an F1 world champion, what they have managed to achieve at the peak of their sport is phenomenal.
Learn from your co-host, he was respectful and engaging, actively listening and waiting for Nico to finish his points, responding back in kind and having a great discussion as opposed to trying to force the conversation his way.
Still a great interview, Nico is brilliant.

Nice man that Nico, he’s still in his silver spoon bubble thinking that the sport is somewhat available to all if they have the talent…wish he had defended his title…great interview.

The person responsible for proving Hamilton was more average than the PR team at Merc wanted you to believe. Once Nico got fed up, he put his head down, did the super hard work and sealed the deal. After that Merc and Lewis would never let that happen again. In comes my guy, Bottas, Merc opens the bank vault to the tune of nearly 2 billion over the 4 year run to cover the team and driver deficiencies which has landed them in the position they have been in for the last 3 years. Well, George won so there's that. And he nearly won when he subbed for Lewis, so there's that too. And yes I'm a Merc fan and that's just the reality of it. Thank you Nico, F'in legend along with your dad. He was amazing to watch too

Niko won once and barely at that with plenty of sacrifices and lots of luck while Lewis was partying on week days and on the weekend demolished him for 3 years. 2016 Niko was lucky very lucky indeed to win it.

But you are very wrong. How many DNF did Lewis have that session to Nico a lot more and yet Nico only just beat him and Mercedes gave Nico Lewis side of the garage at the beginning of that year. Nico didn't really beat Lewis he got more luck that session and had to almost kill himself to do it. Then left afterwards.

Nico and Lewis are friends again and have been for a few year's. Lewis isn't toxic. Toxic is saying thing's about other driver's after the race over an hour later. Like nico said it's how you react to thing's. Take max comment's after a race when he had competition he's word's was very toxic and then back up by a very toxic Horner. Lewis aways says the same thing's after every race and has even said good thing's about other young driver's. You need to know what toxic really is.

After Silverstone 21, it was abundantly clear Lewis would even try desperately and cowardly to ram people off the road at 300 clicks to win a race.Absolutely zero regard for peoples safety.
Was the right thing to retire and still have the ability to see your family with a champ trophy on the mantle.

Rules changed in this period to suit Max , Hamilton would'nt have, and never before drove in that manner.
He had to. Anybody who didnt see this or see, Checo's driving style change to suit new FIA apex rules is lying to themselves.
New fans were and still are ignorant to the change of wheel to wheel racing. So the statement of cowardly driving is mute to me. and utter BS!

    • @thephoenixfromtheashes1242

So you dont want the world to get "green"? You dont want electro cars?
You dont ever change your mind as you realize the potential of something?
No, right? You just drive your diesel V8 every day and still mourn about the fact that there are no V10s in F1 anymore. You are probably scared of electro cars or just unbelievably ignorant, could be both tbh.
What would you do if you had enough money to afford to live in monaco and more? Why is it bad to have money and live in monaco??
