Hulkenberg is the definition of a 'cool customer'.. PR friendly, calm, consistent in races and rapid in qualifying.. he is the perfect driver for any team to build a team around for a solid foundation..
Once again, the most unsupportive driver on the grid
suck my balls mate
And he speak Dutch fluently!
& then bottles it everytime when he gets near a podium.
I agree with all but consistency. That's been his weakness.
@@ExodiaNecross2but just like in the video even though he doesn’t gotten a podium to his name yet somehow Magnussen doesn’t beat him yet
And then him securing a Contract that he can finally stay is just insane
Hulkenberg is a fantastic driver and 100% belongs in formula 1. I find it very harsh that people hold the no podium stat against him.
It´s a harsh sport. If you´re in the sport for 14 seasons and never get a podium, yeah, people are gonna talk about that.
@@Brett-uu4swi mean kinda says that he is good enough to have had so many seasons
@@roypoutsma7870 He's a good enough driver clearly, but to say he's "fantastic"?
@@Brett-uu4sw he definitely is a fantastic driver, never really had the chance to show it tho
@blyat420 That's just speculation. He might have been, he could have been. The truth is he isn't a "fantastic" formula one driver. He's safe and steady and will be a good help for Audi though
Hulk’s a real drivers driver. No bullshit no drama. Just an employee to the track. And he’s very good at his job
“Employee to the track” I’ve never heard that before and I love it.
I'll always be greatfull for Haas for giving Nico a way back into F1, he's always been one of my faviorte drivers
nico hulkenberg has always been a sensational driver (especially in qualifying), it just took a shitty team for people to realize his potential
I disagree, sensational means world champ contender, but hes def stronger driver on the grid,, he is a definition of solid driver, you aim for world champion material look elswhere, ypu look for consistent good performace in any condition you wont be dissapointed, dont be so fast with ovepraising drivers, Albon was a beast, Gasly was a beast, chco was a monster in the pink club, i think even more underrated driver is Tsunoda, i wonder if he can still progress.
Somehow its all in RB family, so have your conclusions haha.
@@ripper9112unfortunately we would never know if he was world champ material in his early year bcs he would always put his best performances in shitboxes like the 2013 Sauber. Same for Jenson Button in the shitbox 2007-08 Hondas. No one had any idea he could be a WDC until he stepped in the Brawn in 09
@@LessGo7921 He had plenty of time to show off in McLaren, instead he was out off F1, no world champ material will be dropped and cant find a seat in F1, call me a hater, but top notch driver will no be treated that way everr. So yeah, hes just good solid driver who simly belongs in F1, thats it.
Nico v Nico would have been legendary,, we were robbed
Really don't think we were because Rosberg vs Hamilton was incredible.
would be cool if every F1 driver got 1 day with a "Liberty media F1 car" to do the fastest qualy lap on "track name" to rank the grid drivers in equal machinery
The difference would realistically be no bigger than 0.250 seconds
Let's use a suzuki liana instead, for budget reasons
@@GameOver-nm2us with some exceptions, there are drivers who won't qualify that close to their teammate.
@@Czeslaw_cn4tv that's mostly down to setups, sometimes the drivers are having bad days, but on a good motivated day where they all are at their best, the difference between 1st and 20th wouldn't be big
i think you could be awesome to make Monaco kind of a superstar race event outside of the championship. You could try some wild ideas here, because its massivly iconic and boring at the same time.
That mustard yellow renault was so good! It's a fucking CRIME what's been done to this team and it's image.
I do agree but that 2021 alpine was something else.
I still remember how people started to claim the yellow Renault livery was getting boring, only cuz it wasn't changed each year, but now lots of people start to wish to have it back.
yup
@@0sles256 This year's livery however is a monstrosity...
@@indranigomes9874 I very much agree. It hasn’t been good since they tried to bring pink onto the livery. Racing Point did it much much better.
One of the things always worth remembering with that podium statistic is that of all his teammates only Perez got podiums. No one else picked up a podium while in the same car as Nico.
As for how many opportunities he's thrown away it's significantly smaller than people make out. Brazil 2012, Germany 2019 he absolutely throw those two away. But what others? I've seen people say bring up Baku 2017 & 2018 but that's always been nonsense.
Baku 2017 he was racing with KMag that day, the Williams had such straightline speed and was way faster than the Renault, at no point was he ahead and he consistently lose time to them. When he crashed out he was in 7th, so he didn't throw away a podium opportunity - he did crash but it was nothing to do with cracking under the pressure of a possible podium.
Baku 2018 - it was early in the race he was 5th behind Sainz having started behind thanks to grid penalty for a change of gearbox. They had just passed both Red Bulls while on the softer rubber. Both Ferrari's, Mercedes and Red Bulls were all in the race, and always filled out those top spots, there was no reason to think this race would be any different at the time Hulk crashed out. It was only much later in the grand prix when the Red Bulls had regained their positions over the likes of Sainz, that it all kicked off and the door opened for someone in the midfield (Perez) to take a podium. So again unless Hulk is prophetic, this is not an example of him throwing away a podium opportunity, nor cracking under the pressure. Just a random error on a circuit he's always had bad form on.
Beyond that I really can't think of other examples where he has thrown away opportunities for a podium. I can recall Monaco 2016 when the team pitted him first and got him stuck in traffic, and made sure the same didn't happen to Perez when Hulk had been ahead the whole weekend.
There was Spa 2016 where he ran 2nd pulling away from Ricciardo who had wing damage and Hamilton who was having to fight his way through the field, when a red flag was thrown just after he made a pitstop. Leaving him 3rd with Hamilton right behind him to make an easy pass.
There was Brazil 2016 where he had been faster than Perez throughout, but a puncture from Raikkonen's crash put an end to his chance for a podium.
Then there's Singapore 2017 when he had been 3rd for a long time and been fighting with Bottas when a hydraulic pressure issue forced him to retire.
Finally a good explanation. There was also Bahrain 2014 when he was running 3rd but suffered an engine problem. Still he held up in 5th.
Germany 2019 he did throw away, yet the whole thing would have happened under certain circumstances - and many more did go off that day.
Brazil 2012 was a young gun's (still young, only 2nd full season in F1) shot which ended up badly (still 5th place though).
Singapore 2017 would have been the one in my opinion. Nothing could stop him really apart from technical issue which happend of course.
The man is not a flop, neither is he overrated. He has never had a machinery and he has never thrown a certain podium (he didn't have a top car at both of clearly possible opportunities and it was raining on both occasions).
And many forgot that he actually had been quite close to Ricciardo in 2019. Up until Mexico they were equal on points, Hulk dropped off in the last 2 races after being sacked by Renault. And was rather close to Perez. And outraced Sainz (when Spaniard was a young gun). Not bad at all imo.
Perez could make the Monaco strategy work because of being able to save his tyres while still putting in decent laps. There's a reason why Nico was called in before Perez. It all depends on how you want to see it, just an example.
Anyone, who says that Hulk doesn't deserve a seat in F1 or that he is rubbish because he didn't score a single podium (yet), know nothing about F1. And I think that, in a way, the fact that he has so many race starts even without a podium shows how dependable he is and how valuable he is to his team. I love his comeback, so much. He genuinely is one of my favourite drivers.
if you race so many times, you may mistakenly take podium. Remember Maldonado has a win fending of Fernando
@@pummyyBut after that he still perform poorly like usual
Well I for sure know more about F1 than you and can tell you he’s a has been….hes getting a shot at the worse team in F1 currently….😂
19:20 - Contrary to what you said about his infamous stat, I think being the driver with most appearances without a podium perfectly indicates the caliber of driver he is. It's always looked at as a negative stat but it also means he is so reliable that not having a podium has never deterred teams from keeping / signing him, and thereby, his number of appearances keep adding up. Such a shame top teams that can deliver him a podium aren't willing to sign him up though.
But why would a top should sign him
As Aldas said he was never one of the best on the grid
They were drivers in midfield teams like Kubica or Perez
Than came max and sainz as well as Daniel
So he was never outstanding in that regard
Being solid is more than enough to get a midfield drive but not a top drive
For me he chose the perfect team with Audi betting that they will be a top 5 team in the near future
Haas 2024 performance will most likely either fade away or won’t be repeatable in 2025 and beyond
@@clintblacktiger8229 he's as good as guys like Sainz, Bottas and Perez. Just timing is everything in F1, especially when your not part of a top teams driver academy
Controversial Opinion: If Nico Hulkenberg was in Ferrari, he would do just as good as Carlos Sainz. Hulkenberg at Ferrari would be the dream!
he would have a podium for sure
I accept this controversial opinion
He would do better
His First season with Williams was incredible, his only pole at Brazil in tricky conditions was magic, but then F1 stardom just never happened, he never got near top level machinery, but he also never seemed to have the final 1-2% needed to catch those rare podiums or beat the top drivers.
You can't post Singapore 17 monaco 2016 when nico in that same race was ahead until force India messed his strategy up and gifted Perez a podium. Brazil 2016, Hungary 16, Austria 15. Even Australia 23 all were not his fault. The only ones I'll put on him were 2012 and 19. That's it
It will never cease to annoy me that none of the top teams have ever given Hulkenberg a shot. As a junior he won Formula ADAC, A1GP, Euro F3 then GP2 in consecutive years, each one in his debut season. He put a Williams on pole position in his debut F1 season and won LeMans at the first attempt. Yet in F1 he seems to be condemned to mid grid at best. If he drives his entire career without getting a real shot at some wins it will be a tragedy.
He has never even had a podium….end of story
@@budget_nomad Read: "He has never even had a good car... end of story"
@@jsadeplenty of other drivers have managed podiums or even wins in sub standard machinery

@josiewallace7968 "Plenty of"........ in 2010s huh? Less than 15 drivers in a decade is plenty much right? LOL
Most underrated driver ever ...
Yes. Nico Hülkenberg and Nick Heidfeld
Being at the right place at the right time essentially sums up F1 in a nutshell.
Aldas is so inspired by Hulk that he decided to look like him 😌
I have a lot of affection for these kinds of drivers - the unlucky. The drivers cursed with ill-timed career moves, shafted by their teams, stuck in the shadow of an all-time great, dragging shitboxes to places they don't rightly belong. Nico's tenacity deserves attention.
I do believe that if Hulkenberg managed to sign for the mercedes seat in 2013, he definitely could have challenged Rosberg for the championship
i don't think so on that - don't think Nico is a championship caliber driver. He is good but he isn't in the club of Hamilton, Verstappen, Alonso, Vettel, Schumacher, Senna, Prost and Kimi
@@Hamilton8timeChampion The 2014-16 mercedes was so far clear of every other car on the field, that Hulkenberg would only have to beat Rosberg half of the time to be champion, and with Hulkenberg being an incredible qualifier, it's very possible.
@@KingCrofty The fact that hulkenberg bottled the podium so many times shows he cracks under pressure. The fact that in the video Aldas says Hulkenberg had bad tyre management which world champions need to have. The fact is that Hulkenberg doesn't have the skills on a sunday to win a title if he was in the Merc.
@@Hamilton8timeChampion he has never had a top 3 car tho. The best you can realistically expect is p7
The thought of both german Nico's being in the dominant mercedes is a wild thought.
Nico is basically the modern Stirling Moss/Gilles Villeneuve.
One of the most consistent drivers on the grid, and can pull off an impressive display of professional driving despite never standing on an F1 Podium.
Also, in his A1 GP career, he famously survived the legendary Jingkai GP in Beijing and is the only driver to successfully do an overtake.
And, during his A1 GP days, he was on top of the podiums constantly, representing Germany and carrying the team to victory like Alonso did for AMR in 2023, but actually winning the championship.
Proud of Nico, I honestly hope he secures some great results with Audi in the future because he deserves it!
Damn. I love Hulkenberg now
Love this man. Such strong mindset, self confidence
I always feel that Nico was a underrated driver. He still have is mojo 😊
I’m so excited for him. He’s gotta be jumping out of his skin with this kinda deal
I thought Hulkenberg would underperform when his return was announced, boy was I wrong! Congratulations to Nico.
Great Video, the Hulk’s comeback has been truly remarkable and one that should be covered by journalists much more
The day this man gets his first win will be the day that will be one of the best GPs I'm gonna watch
Another banger from Aldas per usual. I never knew the lore behind Nico, so this was a really great rundown! I've always liked him though, and knew he was really great and reliable for helping develop cars and not throwing them into the wall when in a team with less money.
This man deserved at least 1 podium.
I love that clip with Alonso and Sainz talking about the best drivers in the grid when Alonso chose Nico alongside Lewis without batting an eyelid.
I think it was in 2014, when the commentators of the channel I watched F1 on back then called Nico Hülkenberg the "favourite rival" of Alonso, because they were battling across many races of the season in the upper midfield, with Ferrari and Force India being somewhat equal in speed. They seem to have battled quite respectfully, so it sounds totally believable Alonso praising Hülkenberg.
Great video, Aldas
Great video keep it up you're doing amazing things 😁👍
Definitely one of the most unique comeback stories in F1. I seriously hope his move to Audi pays off
Lower midfield drivers aren’t judged on podiums. A dependable driver who always does a solid job.
If he'd actually managed some podiums occasionally then maybe he'd have got a top drive
@@josiewallace7968 in regards to him not getting a top drive, he’s been very unlucky and made some bad choices. Imagine Lewis had turned down Merc and they went with Hulk, he’d be a multiple time race winner at a minimum.
Forever a Hulk fan
I didn't watch the 2020 season, but that @ 12:57...
I spat out my tea.
He needed to be in Hamilton's car when ham had covid. It was given to George who was already in a different team. That was a big loss.
It’s refreshing that you don’t just do all the same topics as everyone else. Yeah, there’s no way he’s getting back to F1 without his great sub performances. He wouldn’t been fully forgotten.
As a Team Enstone fan since getting serious about watching F1 in about 2013 (when Kimi came back), after Kimi, Nico is easily the driver I've been closest to wanting to barrack for in his own right rather than just because he was the driver that drove for my team. He's also the only one other than Kimi I've really continued to give a crap about after he left.
Says something given the success some of the others had, and that I'm from Perth same as Danny Ric.
Man really did say hold my fuckin beer
Love to see him grab a few podiums
thats true he is mr consistent, he just never gets that amazing result peaks
Superb driving by Hulk! Great driver!
He's definitely always been a top 10 driver on the grid. You can't say that Ocon was an upgrade at Renault, but Ocon was young and French and in fairness to him, has capitalised on those crazy situations where Hulkenberg in the past hasn't.
I also feel if he was racing in 2020, he would have got a podium, because every midfield driver was getting a podium that year following the downfall of Ferrari and the struggles of Albon in the 2nd Red Bull seat.
he is deffo inspiring
I'm happy he might still get the shot at a podium in the coming years. Consistently being in Q3 the last 2 years with a Haas which had no business there, shows his pace. And this year he managed to capitalize on that with scoring some crucial points. He has definitely matured as a driver. I think Audi will be happy with their choice.
Great video Aldas! I might have an interesting video idea which suits your style of videos very well. "Was Steiner a good team principal?" Everyone was so hyped about him because of DTS, but I honestly think he was part of the problem at Haas and they should have gotten rid of him earlier. I like Guenther's character, but I find it hard to believe he was a good team principal
Not gonna lie, Aldas, one of your your best videos so far. I would have loved to see the montage from 19:47 to 20:24 a little bit faster and a more dramatic music. The longer video helps your cause. Well done!
Hulk is just a pro. Luck/timing has not really been on his side in getting a top seat but thats just the way the sport is. Besides that he's always performed to his cars level.
The fact he came back in one of the worst cars on the grid and managed to land himself a factory drive out of it is pretty incredible. Just hope Audi nail the 26 regs and finally give him a top car. Just so we can see him actually compete for some solid results without having to rely on chaos.
Great video as always mate. Can I request a video on whether Mick Schumacher will ever return full time to F1?
Hulk has thrown away a lot of great chances of achievements but his comebacks have been nothing short of astonishing, putting a Haas into Q3. There was a stretch of races where he consistently beat Perez last year… Perez in the almighty RB, Hulk in the Haas. Also, that year when he joined Porsche to race at LeMans, again he was highly inexperienced, yet he beat Webber straight up who was in equal machinery.
It would be great to see Nico finally get on the podium, he's been unlucky but as you say he's also let himself down at the crucial moment.
Good video, too many ads tho!
Sometimes an experience driver brings so much more to a team than a new hot shot
After Schumacher Jr. didnt cut it they needed someone to keep the german audience somewhat interested.
vettel ?
Tbh if there is no opportunity for sainz I would put Mick in for 2025. Haas was a terrible situation and what do they have to lose in that year. Marketing would be great too.
But Mick DID cut it! Steiner didn't
This year a podium for Nico will come 🙌🏽
I'm still an avid believer that Hulkenberg didn't deserve the seat back in F1, but I'm happy to see his resurgence. Would've loved to see him as a WEC Hypercar driver fulltime.
Not sure why you are surprised that his quantifying performance last year. If you watched F1 last year you should know Haas was very good in qualifying. It`s problem was race and tire wear. He got many chances or missed many chances but has good career. He is good mid level driver nothing more nothing less
Has been one of my fave drivers for years i really hope audi give him a good car
I know it was a god awful race car and slow, but hot damn I loved the look of the launch spec AMR-22.
Another factor often overlooked is his height, being 6ft3 is detrimental most often, especially in the era before the Halos were a thing.
I'm so happy for Hulkenburg! The guy seemed to be plagued with just plane bad luck. But he was gracious and not petulant like so many others. He had a fantastic junior career and he won La Mans for petes sake. I've thought for a long time, put the guy in a competitive car and see what he does. Maybe Audi will bring him the podiums he deserves
top driver and incredibly handsome too
He has deserved what he has achieved in F1. Glad he's still here.
Honestly happy for him and want to see that happen.
I think the Driver that shares same fate but different circumstances is Robert Kubica after Rally accident he never gotten the ferrari seat in F1 worked all the way despite his injury gotten a Seat we deserved AF Corse Ferrari Hypercar not like F1 but it is the top category in WEC.
Even Nyck De Vries but for sure that’s a big turn around scoring points in 2022 to bad stint in Alphatauri to be kicked and having seat in Toyota Hypercar even winning in his second race.
If anyone deserves to habe a good project, its Nico.
He has the skill, he couldve been a múltiple race winner AT THE VERY LEAST.
I honestly hope this move works for him, he deserves it.
Very good video! Solid driver. Makes me think: had he signed with Mercedes, today we'd be talking about multichampion Nico Rosberg! 🤯 But Hulkenberg would've had not only podium finishes but even wins today. Luck, fate, whatever, plays a huge part.
If rosberg won in 2014 he would have retired again.
It was chilling when Hulkenberg scored his first podium in F1.
Does anyone know the background music? Thanks :)
Love how this video also just unwantedly became a Stroll slander video 🤣
He’s like Fernando if Fernando never won world championships (not on that same level as him as a driver) but similar in that he struggled to find cars that helped him maximize his potential for most all of his career
I really hope sauber can get their shit together with Audi I’d love to see hulk on the podium
So he’s the Harry Kane of f1😂
16:22 he doesn't fok smash my car into the barrier
For people holding the no podium stat against him, here are a few examples of podium-scorers that show it's not a way to judge the merit of a driver:
Romain Grosjean
Kevin Magnussen
Daniil Kvyat
Takuma Sato
Vitaly Petrov
Lance Stroll
Tiago Monteiro
Pedro De La Rosa
Pastor Maldonado
Kamui Kobayashi
Alex Albon (pre-return with Williams)
Don't think you can argue those drivers are more talented or showed more promise than Hulkenberg. Just unlucky not to get a top drive, where similar calibre drivers have such as Sainz, Bottas, Perez, Webber, Barrichello, Massa etc.
This just tells me that Audi isn't expecting much in their first years. You don't hire a career midfield driver as your first pick if you have top team ambitions out of the gate.
I want Hulkenberg to have his Kubica moment and win a race/podium with Sauber under a German brand. Seidl and Audi needs to execute properly and build a race-winning car. Also, I can’t wait to see who the second driver will be (maybe Sainz?).
He gets everything out of a midfield car - consistently. Why wouldn't he get everything out of a top car?
The truth is that we have never seen his full potential reflected by results simply because there was always an external limiting factor.
He can be the best driver of the grid. Just look at button and brawn, if audi makes the same than he could win the Championship what would make him for this season the best if the grid. I doubt that Audi pulls a blunder like this but i believe that hulkenberg could be a champion in the right car in 2026. He us so fast with adapting to cars and 2026 are complete new cars. So i think he could be champion but i doubt that audi will nail it like that.
The Harry Kane of F1
might be that top teams consider his size and weight a problem,if they can have a smaller lighter driver, how is almost as good.
I think he is brilliant, and hope he ends up like Mansell did.
I just want to see him win a race.
0:57 Need to see this once in F1 for him.
If there's any justice in the racing world the Hulk will score a podium (or two) before the end of his f1 career.
I like the HULK!
also his success was slowed down because he was viewed as a talented driver and future champion,he didnt had sponsors like Checo or wasn't a pay driver like most of the midfield then...and he was not a great political driver to make the mechanics work for him,so it was a great car or nothing for him, thats what kind of a driver he is,but later in the years he got even better especially after 2017 he never liked those 2014-16 cars...hed be an amazing 2nd driver i think to a hamilton, leclerc or verstappen nowdays
I always watch his videos in 1.25 or 1.5X
I think the thing with no podiums doesn´t say that much. Between 2014 and 2019 it was basically impossible to drive onto the podium on your own if you weren´t driving a Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull or Williams. And from 2020 to 2022 Hülkenberg wasn´t in F1. Of course you can blame Hülkenberg for some mistakes, but every driver does mistakes. I think a big part is bad luck for Hülkenberg, simply never when he had a good race enough top cars retired. Sometimes he himself also had the bad luck of a technical failure or someone crashing into him. For example, Hülkenberg could have easily scored a podium in Australia 2023 if the race direction correctly decided to count the standing after the restart and not before it.
I think Hülkenberg barely missed out on a top car. Mercedes could have easily taken him instead of Bottas for 2017 and Red Bull would probably have taken him for 2021 if Pérez hadn´t had one of the best season endings seen for many years.
Melbourne 2023 was a disgrace!
@@turrican4d599 Yes, but a podium is a podium. And Hülkenberg drove well in Australia 2023.
Wonder if history would’ve been different if Mick was partnered with Hulk
Now his teammate is the one getting kicked out. 😆
the Audi lineup is gonna be nico and mick.
he's also getting better looking as he ages
Nico in haas for some reason: nah I’d get points
I like him.
Nico needs a podium before he retires
It’s weird to think how close Nico was to that Mercedes seat. While it doesn’t seem like it now Lewis wanted to go to redbull until Nikki told him her could be the first wdc winner at Mercedes and Lewis jumped at that.
You can't say Hulk's strong performances justified HAAS dtopping Mick. We need to remember that Mick was already picking up speed as the 2022 season progressed, and he could have improved a lot more in the future. But, as was pointed out in the video, Gunther Steiner is not the team principal to nurture rookies.
He wasn't "kicked out of Formula 1 twice". He wasn't banned by the FIA. He was out of contract and didn't get another drive so had to wait for another opportunity.
the fact that he doesnt have a podium and never was in a top team is probably the main reason why hes still so motivated and performs much better than youd expect at his age. Yes, drivers like Lewis and Fernando are still great despite their age but A LOT of drivers in their mid to late 30s just drop in performance. You saw it with Kimi, with Seb, now you see it with Bottas, these guys have already peaked, winning races, even championships and then racing in the midfield, they might not see a point in it anymore. Hulk-Bottas-Perez was a trio that you always considered upper midfield drivers, Hulks the only one of them who has never been in a race winning car, he might still yet reach his prime if Audi succeeds in developing a decent car as long as he still drives for them. Because many do raise the question, what is the point in replacing Bottas with Hulk when theyre similarly skilled drivers? Is it because Nico is German? You could argue that but frankly, Nico in 2023 and 2024 looks like a much better driver than Bottas. Bottas admitted himself that he was constantly under heavy pressure in Mercedes, only getting 1 year contracts and driving next to one of the GOATs of F1. But now that we see his post Mercedes performance, it may be the case that this pressure got the best out of him and nowadays struggles to beat a mediocre F2 paydriver. If anybody wants a controversal opinion, I dont think this years Sauber is any slower than the Haas. Yes they suffered from slow pitstops but we have seen the cars potential multiple race weekends and on one hand, slow pitstops prevented better results but on the other hand, its the driver pairing that also failed to deliver results in a car that can probably do much more than it showed so far. We have seen them close to points a few times and if Zhou is close to points in that car, you bet a more competent driver would score those points.
Seb didn't peak. I think he was emotionally hurt by Ferrari's decision to drop him for 2021 and that affected his results. Then in 2022 with the Aston being 9th quickest for most of the season he lost the motivation to drive anymore so he chose to retire.
