      Yes bees are so fascinating one can learn so much .. they sleep early and work all days but have a short live, they are only focus, loyal and purpose when they have a queen.. I need to have this schedule 😂

    When you said "box" at first I thought you had your standard wooden box. I love how you've improvised & literally turned a plastic fork storage box into a home for the bees lol At first they were like "What the hell is this shit? We want the tree" but they hv no choice 😂

    JP - really love your content. In another video you talked about the varroa mite problem - my question: have you or your fellow beekeepers talked about using its natural enemy Chelifer cancroides (in germany its called Bücherskorpion - book scorpion). This little critter was allready used in the middle ages in europe and has now a strong comeback.

    • @JPthebeeman
      @JPthebeeman  3 роки тому

      I don’t believe bees would mind having them in their colonies, besides varroa develop in drone cells & pseudos would have to get to em before the cells were capped. I don’t see that happening.

    • @hikebikearchaeology1782
      @hikebikearchaeology1782 3 роки тому

      @@JPthebeeman yeah but the effect of the scorpions is strong enough to have a healthy colony without using chemicals from what I read. The also go after hive beatle larva and bee moths. There is a bunch of content about this on UA-cam but it's mostly in german I fear. Anyways your videos are very inspiring - I will even pay our local Beeman a visit to show me around. Sadly as an archeologist I mostly only see european hornets when I'm in the fields. Other Insects are disappearing at alarming rates

    When early bees refused to gather and start to swarm, my grandfather would grab a metal pot and spoon and use it as a drum and the noise would cause them to land and gather.

    • @JPthebeeman
      @JPthebeeman  3 роки тому +2

      “Tanging” was common in the days of skep beekeeping, not so much anymore with the advent of hive boxes with removable frames, Langstroth capitalizing on stackable hives in the 1850’s.
      I’ve tried Tanging swarms, have witnessed others doing it yet I remain somewhat skeptical with the practice.
      Perhaps we just didn’t have the correct resonance it would take to produce enough vibrations for the bees to respond, who knows for surely.
      Please forgive me if it seems I’m doubting what you experienced, it’s just that it’s something I would have to see firsthand, considering the fact that honey bees don’t have ears.

    Hello JP, I have a question regarding the queen cells. If a hive doesn't have a queen anymore, who is laying the egg to make a new queen? Do the bees just take an egg that was laid (or a larva) earlier and put it in a queen cell and then feed it royal jelly , or can a worker lay an egg and just feeding it royal jelly is enough to create a new queen?

    How many pounds of bees, is considered a good catch, when placing a swarm trap?

    • @JPthebeeman
      @JPthebeeman  3 роки тому +1

      A very small swarm is 200-1,000 bees, a small swarm 1,000-3,000 bees, a medium swarm 3,000-4,500 bees, a decent sized swarm 4,500-7,500 bees, a good sized swarm 7,500-12,000 bees & a really good sized swarm 12,000-1,8000 bees & up, give or take.
      Swarms from one year to the next can vary greatly depending on the season/winter previously.
      There’s roughly 3,000 bees in a pound of bees.
