Thanks! Hi Angie. Every time I need to know ANYTHING about using my Cricut, I head to your channel. Everything is so well explained and demonstrated. PLEASE keep up the great work. Thank you
Thank you for the great video, I am just going to make a sign with HTV and now I know how to do it. I have learnt so much from your videos covering vinyl and also sublimination.
THANK YOU SOO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!! I hate using permeant vinyl on wood it comes off during Florida humidity. With the heat transfer vinyl it doesn't!!! SOO THANK YOU AGAIN 😁😍😍😍♥️♥️♥️🙌🙌👏👏👏
Good to know you can do this on painted wood. I have a clock that I used with acrylic paints, and I have a quote that is going on it. So after I use the heat press, can I also use a sealer/varnish afterwards?
@@AngieHolden Thank you so much for this amazing video ❤ Once I get my heat press vinyl on the wood can I use Mod Podge clear glossy sealer spray over it ????
Newby cricut user here! Got the express air 2 for Christmas! Got start building my cricut tools and materials arsenal haha! In the mean time can I use an iron for all your projects you have shown on your channel?
Hi Angie.. I made a wood sign today using HTV . I used a pine board. I prepared it by first putting polyurethane on the knots, then I primed, then painted it.. I used my large heat press ( the only one I have) at 300 degrees for 40 seconds. The vinyl did adhere well but the pine gum (sap) leaked through. Is there any way to prevent this from happening in the future and is there a way I can salvage the sign I did make. p.s. hand sanitizer removed the paint.Thank you for your help..Alma
Very helpful I’m very new to this and trying to do my new small business , and stuck with the wood prints on ! So heat transfer vinyl can I add over it gold foil ?
Does some wood let off any toxic fumes? I would like to press a transfer on Poplar wood at 190 degrees but not sure if this wood is treated with anything that might let off dangerous fumes under a press
So I used waxpaper to cover transfer, the transfer paper melted, too hot?? Does it mattter the type of transfer paper used ? I got mine at the dollar store. Maybe it can't be heated ? Thanks
my HTV melted and didn't stick to the wood, I stain and coat the wood prior and let it dry for 24 hours each time; what I observed from your technique is you put a butcher paper/parchment, that I didn't do, is that the reason mine melted do you think? I used the right setting from cricut heat guide.. I used everyday iron on, any suggestions? Thank you!
HI was wondering if you can help me? I tried using HTV on a wood sign but when I removed the backing it left little yellow marks on the wood, any idea why this would happen? Thank You!!
You can paint the wood. The main thing I would say is that people do not let the paint cure long enough. For spray paint, I would wait 72 hours before applying anything on top. Then use the minimum temperature and time that you can get away with.
Hi I am new to cricut and would like to know if this can be ironed onto stain pine wood and I would like to apply a gloss clear spray poly. Can this be done?
What about on wood cutting boards from the dollar store? Wanting to make Santa cookie trays to sell for Xmas. Do I need to coat it?Can I use a home iron? Not getting my Easy Press til Xmas😉😁 Thanx so much. Love ur vids!!
I haven't actually tried HTV on wood with an iron so I am not positive. I generally don't add HTV to anything food will touch but Santa cookie trays really don't get the foot on the HTV so maybe that works? You could add it then go over the entire thing with a food grade sealer like Shellac.
How on earth do you just pull it off when weeding such a wispy design? I always have to do surgery just to keep everything in place and I usually still end up ruining something. What kind of vinyl is that? I’ve tried siser and cricut htv
@@AngieHolden hmm ok. I think it might be my blade. It hasn’t done much but it has always struggled with small lettering and details. Hell it’s even making bigger letters look sloppy. I think it’s a fine tip blade. Is there a different blade I could use?
I usually don't as this will be inside and is for my personal use. I would if I was using outdoors. If you are selling these. you might also want to seal over the top.
have you used the siser htv metal on stained wood? i keep getting this gooey residue after i transfer and i dont know if im removing the clear backing too early or if im doing something else wrong :(
Is it the sap coming out of the wood? I have that issue sometimes. I would heat it for less time and see if it still will stick and not have the residue. I think that is dependent on the wood and how dry it is more than the brand of HTV.
Wish I had watched your video before I attempted my project.should the wood have a coat of poly on it before you do the HTV? Is there a specific brand of vinyl that can be used. Thanks gain for making these video for rookies like myself.
I would coat it or dry it out. You just don't want to pull the sap out with the heat. Any HTV should work. The ones with a shorter press time do work a bit better.
So would a wood slice purchased from michaels (like Angie used ) be dry enough that I wouldn’t need to add modge podge prior to adding htv? I wondered if the heat does anything to the modge podge?
Wood is tricky. I usually play around with the lowest time and temperature that is recommended by the manufacturer of the HTV and see if I can get it to stick.
The number one cause of that is not allowing your paint to dry long enough as the moisture is coming out. I would allow the paint to cure a minimum of 72 hours before attempting this.

Awesome project! Using this to display a vinyl cut made from a picture of my dad
Thank you Angie I will be doing this today.
Hope you like it!
Love it. Surprised iron on worked. I would have thought permanent vinyl
.
Interesting. I put regular permanent vinyl on wood all the time but never thought to use heat or even HTV.
You should try it!
That’s why I’m watching to find out if I can use the permanent bond vinyl, thank you

Yes you can use an iron for HTV! It is a bit of a learning curve so maybe start with a small project and using it on fabric.
Thanks 🙏🏼 Angie..!! Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
Since 2 years ago, have you attempted to put a varnish on top of the completed htv wood work?
I have before. You can use a clear finish on top.

I use a low temp/time HTV to prevent this. I have BFlex HTV which is like 285 for just 4 seconds.
@@AngieHolden ok thank you . I will try another one using your method. Thank you so much for getting back to me, I really appreciate it..
we are doing coasters for my daughters wedding . would it be smart to clear coat the coasters after the heat pressing or is the heat pressing enough ?
I would do something over them.
Very helpful I’m very new to this and trying to do my new small business , and stuck with the wood prints on ! So heat transfer vinyl can I add over it gold foil ?
I have never tried that. Sorry!
Thank you!!
Thanks for this tutorial. What font did you use?
This was a handmade SVG file.
This is a great idea but just not for all types of wood it won’t stick on rough stock it has to be baby bottom smooth
Does some wood let off any toxic fumes? I would like to press a transfer on Poplar wood at 190 degrees but not sure if this wood is treated with anything that might let off dangerous fumes under a press
I don't think plain wood would release fumes. If you are using some sort of treated wood, you might want to be cautious.
Was your wood treated with a clear coat or anything prior to applying the vinyl.
I have done it both ways. On raw and with a clear coat. Both work fine.
@@AngieHolden by clear coat you mean mod pog or what? Thanks in advance
So I used waxpaper to cover transfer, the transfer paper melted, too hot?? Does it mattter the type of transfer paper used ? I got mine at the dollar store. Maybe it can't be heated ? Thanks
Correct. You need a heat transfer mask for this type of vinyl. Most brands come with one attached already.
my HTV melted and didn't stick to the wood, I stain and coat the wood prior and let it dry for 24 hours each time; what I observed from your technique is you put a butcher paper/parchment, that I didn't do, is that the reason mine melted do you think? Sounds like a heating issue. I usually use an HTV with a low time/temperature requirement as it is a bit easier. But everyday iron on will work!
@@AngieHolden thank you for your reply I will try it then
Hi. Ive used HTV on a chopping board, its left a sticky residue and a mark around where the htv vinyl was placed. what am i doing wrong?? thanks
More than likely you need to let it cool before peeling back the carrier sheet.
@@AngieHolden ok i’ll try that. Thanks.
So cool 😎
Is the wood ''varnished" or ''naturally raw"? Nice project. I learn sooooo much from your videos. Thank You.
This was probably varnished as I purchased it finished.
I think it only works on painted wood not raw
HI was wondering if you can help me? I tried using HTV on a wood sign but when I removed the backing it left little yellow marks on the wood, any idea why this would happen? Thank You!!
Probably the sap or something coming out of the wood.
@@AngieHolden I painted it, but that makes sense
I have found that some wood the sap will come through paint with heat.
Thank You!! I think I might have had it too high :)@@AngieHolden
Have you ever tried applying the HTV to stained wood? Also I was wondering do you ever put modge podge or polyacrylic over it to seal it?
I have put it on stained wood without issue. You can definitely seal over the top as well!
@@AngieHolden ok thank you
@AngieHolden what do you seal it with?
New subscriber here with a quick question, can the wood be spray painted, if so are there specific paints to stay away from?
You can paint the wood. The main thing I would say is that people do not let the paint cure long enough. For spray paint, I would wait 72 hours before applying anything on top. Then use the minimum temperature and time that you can get away with.
Could you use printable HTV on wood? Would there be any differences? Thank you.
You can but the wood would not show through.
When I use my heat press it causes the wood to warp a little but after a while it lays flat, is this normal? If not what is the best fix? Thanks
Yes that definitely does happen especially for thinner pieces. I sometimes allow to cool while weighted down.
Awesome! Have you worked with foil on wood? 😮
I have not.
What brand of HTV vinyl did you use?
I used the Cricut brand.
Is it possible to use mini heat press on cartoon boxes?
Maybe? I haven't tried it.
Can I use Oracel 651 and use contact strong grip to pick up the design?
That would not be HTV. That is adhesive.
So I’m guessing you still need to mirror the image? Just like you would with a shirt?
Yes you do.
Hi I am new to cricut and would like to know if this can be ironed onto stain pine wood and I would like to apply a gloss clear spray poly. Can this be done?
Yes that should work!
Can you add iron on vinyl to sequence fabric?
I would not.
What about on wood cutting boards from the dollar store? Wanting to make Santa cookie trays to sell for Xmas. Do I need to coat it?Can I use a home iron? Not getting my Easy Press til Xmas😉😁 Thanx so much. Love ur vids!!

Do you put some type of sealer on top of it???
I only do if it is going outside.
Would you recommend vinyl or htv for outdoor wood signs?
Either one. But with both for outdoor I would put a sealer on top.
Do you need to clear coat this after the vinyl is pressed?
You don't have to especially if it is going to be used indoors.
How on earth do you just pull it off when weeding such a wispy design? I always have to do surgery just to keep everything in place and I usually still end up ruining something. What kind of vinyl is that? I’ve tried siser and cricut htv
This is Cricut HTV. Mine usually cuts like this though.
@@AngieHolden hmm ok. I think it might be my blade. It hasn’t done much but it has always struggled with small lettering and details. Hell it’s even making bigger letters look sloppy. I think it’s a fine tip blade. Is there a different blade I could use?
Maybe just try getting a replacement blade. That one may be damaged or dull!
I like the font What’s it called ?
It was a pre-made SVG file.
Will the clear coat I put on my wood affect the htv?
I have done this one clear coated wood and raw wood. I think you will be fine.
Do I need to prep the wood at all?
I mean if you want to stain or paint it, then yes you would do that.
Do you mirror the image to cut for application?
Yes you do.
Unless patterned HTV correct?
Could you do this with a heat press?
I would say that you definitely could!
great job, love it. what was the font you used?
I think this was hand lettered. It was a design in Design Space.
@@AngieHolden thank you for replying back to me . Have A MERRY CHRISTMAS.
Will this work on painted wood
Yes it will. You will need to make sure the paint is completely dried and cured.
Do you seal it after you put on the wood?
If it is for indoors, I don't. Outdoors I will add a few coats of polycrylic.
Love it 😍
Should the sign be sealed with Polyurathane?
I usually don't as this will be inside and is for my personal use. I would if I was using outdoors. If you are selling these. you might also want to seal over the top.
Can I do this on a wooden serving board ? How would I seal it
If you are going to do it where it touches food, I would do epoxy over the top that is food safe.
Will htv apply to rough barn wood? Or just smooth wood
I would just do smooth wood.
have you used the siser htv metal on stained wood? i keep getting this gooey residue after i transfer and i dont know if im removing the clear backing too early or if im doing something else wrong
:(
Is it the sap coming out of the wood? I have that issue sometimes. I would heat it for less time and see if it still will stick and not have the residue. I think that is dependent on the wood and how dry it is more than the brand of HTV.
How do you get the sticky lining residue away after pressing? I only have the issue when putting on wood not clothing.
Hmmm. I don't remember having that issue. Maybe the brand you are using bonds with the wood?
Having the same issue with multiple brands
Can you paint the wood and then add HTV?
I have before. Just be sure to let the paint dry for a few days as you don't want to pull the moisture out of it.
I did heat transfer on painted woodround but the paint lifted... Did i heat it too long???
Wish I had watched your video before I attempted my project.should the wood have a coat of poly on it before you do the HTV? Is there a specific brand of vinyl that can be used. Thanks gain for making these video for rookies like myself.

What can you use to heat if don’t have cricut heat press
Try using an iron!
Where you recommend to but wood block that can be used with heat press ?
I usually get my blanks at my local craft store.
@@AngieHolden it’s regular blank or I need sublimation blank?
When you are using HTV, just regular wood works! No need for sublimation unless you are using sublimation ink or Infusible Ink.
Do you have to mirror it
Yes you will need to mirror your cut and place your heat transfer vinyl shiny side down on the mat.
How about iron and vinyl, what’s my options
HTV and Iron on vinyl are the same thing.
What temp and time for this
Wood is tricky. I usually play around with the lowest time and temperature that is recommended by the manufacturer of the HTV and see if I can get it to stick.
How to seal finish sign
I don't seal for indoor use. Outdoor - I use a few coats of polycrylic over the entire thing.
I heat pressed on painted wood and my paint started to bubble
The number one cause of that is not allowing your paint to dry long enough as the moisture is coming out. I would allow the paint to cure a minimum of 72 hours before attempting this.
You can see where you edited the video in 2 places
All of my videos are edited sorry if that bothers you.
Tried this for the first time and totally ruined my project :/ My vinyl crinkled so bad.
Hmmmm....my guess would be the heat was too hot?
What can I do different
I did heat transfer on painted woodround but the paint lifted... Did i heat it too long???
On painted wood, you want to be sure to let the paint cure for at least 24 hours before pressing. The moisture from the paint can also lift.
