3 out of 3 movies Eggers has made before are nothing short of masterpieces. This one is his first remake of sorts. I hope it's not a sell-out. After "The Witch" and "The Lighthouse" both being stellar in their own special way of combining period piece, psychological thriller and mythological horror, I became apprehensive when a trailer for "The Northman" made it look like he had taken on a mercenary project jumping on the mainstream bandwagon of the recent viking hype. Just saw this movie with no previews/spoiler ... fantastic. Then I started reading reviews after. Why are people so dumb about the dumbest things? How is this movie not a creative breakthrough on so many levels? It's what the art of movie making should be.
It feels like another version of Bram Stoker's Dracula. I read somewhere there were some legal issues back then when the original came out due to portraiting similar characters as the book. I liked the atmosphere in this one so very much.
The best part about Orlok's look is that its so accurate to what an actual Transylvannian nobleman would look like. And his voice sounded like a pack of wolves growling. The sound design alone was so good!
pleasantly surprised with Lily Rose Depp’s performance. Swore she looked familiar and when I realized after the movie she was in The Idol it kinda blew my mind although she was pretty good in that too.
We saw this on boxing day. We also really appreciate Eggers and we hope he gets into more and more films. It's funny how some reviewers are saying it's the scariest movie of the year and others, like Chris S., say it's not actually scary, but more a dark fantasy. With Eggers, based on his previous work, I expected "Nosferatu" to be more of a dark fantasy. So, I'll keep my scare expectations low, and my fantastical expectations high. Cannot wait to see this one!
I'm a total fan of Eggers and this film was totally amazing. Dripping with lushness, lines to die for like " I've seen things that would make Isaac Newton back into the womb of his mother"... And visuals omg ! Like I was looking at a moving oil painting, and erotic and everything really. Just go see it.
Just watched it tonight. The cinematography was wondering, and so was the costume design and acting.... But something about it felt boring to me. I had a hard time staying focused.
I would say Eggers, Flanagan, and Ari Aster are the best modern horror directors from the US. Eggers and Aster have dipped their toes in other genres, but they still have a horror element to them. Peele and Ti West get honorable mentions.
Maybe its just me, but iI never consider Nosferatu, or Dracula for that matter, to be scary. Its the psychological and atmospheric qualities that affect me. That said, this film was exceptionally well crafted esp in Eggers' style. I loved it. Considering this is his most mainstream film to date. I prefer his "smaller" scale films though like The Lighthouse, a masterpiece imo.
Stuckmann probably won't read this - but on the off chance - what'd you think of it compared to the old versions? (Murnau & Herzog's). Which is your favorite of the three?
I just finished this in theaters.......holy shit. my anticipation and expectations for this movie were greatly exceeded. highly recommend to anyone. loved it!
Last year, I flew to Mexico City and the German Cultural Center were doing a screening of the original Nosferatu film with a band doing a reimagined live soundtrack. I had never seen Nosferatu, but watching the movie in a parking lot during the cold city winter with hundreds of people drinking beer and eating pretzels is easily one of my favorite memories of my life and Nosferatu became a core part of me. I can’t fucking wait to see this movie. Every Eggers film is an experience and I know this will be no different. I’m taking my whole family. Merry Christmas!!!
This film was BEAUTFUL. So well shot. Well acted. But I had problems with the ending. Also, I feel count Orlok was never scary. The mustache was a bad choice. Lily-Rose stole the fucking show. SHE WAS AMAZING.
I thought he was scary in the fireplace scene, but every time it started to get scary, one of the characters would "wake up." That got old really fast.
An FYI Willem Dafoe actually played Nosferatu in the 2000 movie "Shadow of a vampire" the comedy/horror plot being a film within a film about the making of the original 1922 version & after the lead actor is found dead the real Nosferatu vampire (Dafoe) is hired to to fill in so the film can be completed along with the unexpected resulting deaths & mayhem of having Art meets the Undead 😵💫👹
His movies hitherto were all original scripts, but the basic events were not entirely new: The VVitch draws from New England witch trials; The Lighthouse draws from historical events involving the death of a lighthouse keeper under unclear circumstances; and The Northman draws from elements of Hamlet. Yet, all stories, as they play out, are original ones, be it the characters, the plot, or how their main themes interlock. The common approach to all three films, although these widely differ from each other in visual style, is Eggers' unique amalgamation of costume drama, character study, psychological thriller, existential dread and mythological horror, where all of these elements inform each other and are pretty consistently displaying a zeitgeist and mindset where the borders between subjective reality, subconscious symbolism, religious superstition, individual madness and/or supernatural interference shift or blur. "Uncanny" is the adjective that comes to mind most starkly in Robert Eggers' cinematic universe.
I just saw it yesterday. Not my favorite vampire movie, but it's up there. I like the inspiration from the silent film over 100 years ago. It properly feels like old school gothic horror. The acting was fantastic.
It’s worth seeing. Especially if you’ve seen the previous versions, particularly the original. Saw it last night and while the atmosphere is chilling, the visuals didn’t quite live up to what I kept hearing. Probably because every shot is so tight. The pacing of scenes seems to get faster as the movie progresses which creates a sense of urgency and panic which mirrors the plot. Was nearly impossible to understand count orlok. Thought the cast was chosen well. Everything considered it felt like it should have been truly epic but somehow all these great individual pieces didnt seem to come together. Something was missing for me and I cant quite put my finger on it. If anyone feels the same way lmk what your thoughts are
Genuine question: Why has no one ever made a truly faithful cinematic version of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel? The BBC come closest with their 1977 TV version but although the plot is close none of the characters look like Stoker's original creations. I guess Coppola's 1992 version is second but despite its title it veers very far off the original path.
Really looking forward to seeing this, this Christmas. As an ex JW myself, going to the movies on and around Christmas has always been a big thing and this is certainly going to be a good time.
I can't agree more, Aster hasn't impressed me that much, Peele is going more towards race horror, but Eggers time period peices are so beautiful, creepy and amazing.

he did good with this one. highly recommend. The only thing I think this movie has going against it is the fact that there have been so many romanticized versions of the vampire that have been made, that a general audience might go in with expectations, or preconceived assumptions.
For me, it was like watching Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Same story, but not as entertaining. It was like I’d already seen it before. Was ok, but not great. Was a beautiful looking shoot film though.
I liked all of Eggers other works a lot. This movie looked and sounded beautiful. The actors did an incredible job. That being said, this was the first movie of his that I really didn't care for. It felt like a very slow burn with a lackluster payoff. Plus I absolutely couldn't stand the design of Nosferatu, which is so unfortunate. I thought that the mustache they gave him was going to be revealed as part of a disguise because it looked so bad, but it wasn't. It took me out so bad. As a kid, even seeing commercials with a shot of the original Nosferatu scared me because the creature design was so striking. I almost nodded off in the theater a couple of times. It should also be noted that me, my friends, and the people behind us all laughed when the movie ended because we were like "wtf, thats it?" which is not the reaction a movie like this should get
Finally came out here in the UK yesterday (New Year’s Day). Despite being nearly spoiled with hearing his voice in clips featured on talk shows (Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert) and being spoilt on Instagram (was simply searching for someone and a reel of his face popped up), I was still able to very much enjoy Bill Skarsgård’s performance as Count Orlok. Probably my second favourite Robert Eggers film after ‘The Lighthouse’ but I’ve been a fan of his entire filmography, and hopefully will get more on the way
*SPOILERS IN REGARDS TO THE COUNT HIMSELF* I LOVED Bill’s portrayal of Orlock. I know the character basically originated as a bootleg Dracula, but I appreciate how this depiction of Orlock was vaguely reminiscent of the actual Vlad the Impaler - especially with the mustache. All the more confirmed by the fact that Eggers literally wanted to depict him as a “dead Hungarian noble”. It’s perfect.
All of the elements were there to make a great movie, but I left the theatre feeling underwhelmed. It did nothing for me. The best scene was the carriage sequence, in which Eggers was able to masterfully depict a dreamlike quality to the proceedings. Everything else left me feeling cold and disinterested.
I really liked the movie! Sadly I had hard time finding a friend to go to see the movie with bc somehow everyone thinks nosferatu is super scary but it really wasn’t! It had premiere in here yesterday when I went to see it and the theatre wasn’t even full. Now I’m thinking that maybe the marketing failed a bit because ppl won’t go and see the film bc they think It’ll be too scary. I think it was beautiful, interesting and entertaining.
Robert Eggers is probably our best horror director working now outside Jordan Peele. Very excited to see how this Nosferatu compares to the original and Herzog versions.
Dude, Jordan Peele shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath. He hasn't made a good film since "Get Out" and even that wasn't "scary" at all and was just a thriller with comedic elements. And "Us" and "Nope" were just embarrassingly bad. Peele's reputation as a "horror" director has evaporated quicker than Shyamalan's did.
@redadamearth Recently watched Get Out for first time and it was Garbage and absolutely Stupid. Overhyped to the highest order and nothing scary or original about it
Jordan Peele is the most overrated horror movie director in today's time. They could announce he was going to direct a movie coming out three years for now and Critics would rave for it.
Nosferatu suffers the same thing that Brams/Cappola versions- pacing . Both films lose me 3/4 of the way thru out . Nosferatu is brilliantly shot and is awesome for it set pieces cinematography and time period . More Orlock would have been great .
I am going to see it this weekend, but wait.... "You need to support a movie like that whenever it's in theaters." You nailed the point. Eggers is one of my favorite filmmakers, too, and hopefully his creative crusade will go on!
I saw the movie today. I avoided watching any reviews because I wanted to go in blind. I was surprised when the credits rolled to see that Orlock was played by Bill Skarsgard. I did not pick him at all. Superbly crafted film.
The way you described it, sounded a lot like Copalla’s Dracula. Rewatched it recently, MUCH better than people make it out to be. I understand why people say it isn’t scary but it scared me at times, however the atmosphere and general wafting uneasy terror is enough for me to be scared. Incredibly mastery in visual effects too.
@@carlhungus2521was gonna say the same thing. Ryder I think can have range when she doesn’t phone it in, but Keanu is hopeless. I say this as a fan of the guy! I’ve just never seen him extend out of his extremely limited range.
Seems to have shades of Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula. Probably none of the over the top stuff, but definitely the dark gothic stuff. The hand shadow going over the town. Can’t wait to see it.
Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula is still my all time favorite vampire movie. For me it’s the gold standard, and ever since I have not been satisfied with any new take on the story. This film finally looks to be a worthy successor or counterpart to Coppola’s classic
It makes sense since these are all *kinda* the same story, but this feels (to me) mostly just inspired by the original film, with a Count Orlock redesigned to look like the original literary description of Dracula. With that said it’s been decades since I’ve seen Copplla’s film, I just remember being annoyed at Keanu’s “acting” (LOVE Keanu but that man does not have range) and if I remember correctly a weirdly happy ending? As in redemptive for Dracula? Am I remembering this correctly?
Saw the movie two weeks ago, really one of the best movies of the year for me, the way I’d describe it is like a very very dark poem made into a movie, with just some jump scares here and there, but this is pure dark poetry by Eggers, highly recommend it.
Skarsgard’s height is one of the better and more underrated feats of the casting. That 6’4” frame gives him the menacing and threatening look of towering over others. Almost forgot it was him until I saw the credits.
Honestly I thought it was pretty scary, the soundtrack like most good horror is rlly what did it every time orlock showed up man. Best part was when he first gets to the castle and orlock is pouring the wine n it kinda has him teleporting or moving insanely fast I thought that was a really neat detail
Big Eggers fan here, but sorry to say he turned the Lord of darkness into an HIV infected patient with COPD pneumonia who is suffering from complications of corticosteroids.Coppolas version or even the Demeter were much better than this wannabe gothic story😢
It is gorgeous…but it is not good. It feels like a movie in the style of Eggers without being on his level. I loved The Lighthouse. The dialogue is much flatter here though. Not too many payoffs, wasn’t really cheering for anyone. Thomas is ill most of the time and therefore ineffective as a hero. This was not as thrilling or dreadful in the way the witch was. I saw this in a packed theater and the vibe was not good.
The voice of Count Orlock was Amazing! The actors are so talented in this film. However, I was disappointed Count Orlock was not scarier. I didn't even see fangs, and the big mustache was just ridiculous. It seemed to basically copy Bram Stokers Dracula storyline. There were about 30 minutes of unnecessary drama scenes that should have been cut out. There should have been more action scenes. I'd say that a 4 out of 10 rating is realistic.
I agree on all that you said on the quality of cinematography and acting, BUT...it was slow moving and the build up was a let down. Left me a bit empty.
I must say I'm not familiar with "Nosferatu" in any way apart from an old Spongebob gag. But it had me the second Robert Eggers name appeared, and I'm all for a good and gothic vampire movie.

Went on Christmas Day to a completely packed theater. Amazing experience and movie 9/10.
Just saw it. Movie is fantastic, screenings were sold out throughout the day and tomorrow in every theatre in my city. Loved it.
very excited for this one. Eggers is also one of my favorite directors when I saw The Witch and I've been hooked since. I'll for sure be seeing this in the theaters!
Already purchased my ticket for Xmas day -- definitely my most anticipated movie of 2024!
The sound design alone was so good!
the thing about 19th century Germany is that everyone spoke English with a British accent. very accurate 👍
Hi Chris, as a huge fan of Robert Eggers, where is your review for The Northman?!
Awesome. Nosferatu saves Christmas just in time. Thanks Chris!
pleasantly surprised with Lily Rose Depp’s performance. Swore she looked familiar and when I realized after the movie she was in The Idol it kinda blew my mind although she was pretty good in that too.
We saw this on boxing day. We also really appreciate Eggers and we hope he gets into more and more films. I am truly hoping someone makes a great, non-childish, Pirate film and I think he would be good for that.
Also not my favourite of his movies but it did justice to the Nosferatu story while being a little different and having it's own voice.

Whenever I watch your videos, now, I see a human who appears to be thriving physically and I can only hope is also doing so mentally. Keep it up!!
Watching him and Jeremy Jahns basically have the same career until Jeremy decided to go more and more negative and Chris sticking with the positive is wild to see.
@@gamingeagle19 -- Yes, it is. Chris thriving, as a person, despite garnering lower views on his channel, is a testament to how "big numbers" isn't the positive most people believe it is.
Only problem with Jeremy is he is so hard to please I've seen him do good reviews for movies and yet they still won't the awesometacular rating

Chris is a coward. Jeremy reviewed a “right” wing film and people hate him for that. Chris decided he only wants to be positive. He’s a coward.
Some of the subtle 6s for demonic imagery throughout different scenes was just a chefs kiss from a design perspective
Released on My Birthday. Thanks, Eggers, I am really happy about this present.
Just watched it tonight. The cinematography was wondering, and so was the costume design and acting.... But something about it felt boring to me.
I had a hard time staying focused.
thought i was the only one
For me it’s because it was a horror movie that just wasn’t that scary. Great movie yes but it was no scary at all
I would say Eggers, Flanagan, and Ari Aster are the best modern horror directors from the US. Eggers and Aster have dipped their toes in other genres, but they still have a horror element to them. Peele and Ti West get honorable mentions.
Ti West is overrated and Peele's movies are getting worse, not better.
@@greggibson33the X trilogy is great what are you on about. And Peele is literally an Oscar winner lol
Peele made the best movie out that group. So your rankings don't make much sense.
@@TheGililgi Read it again. Take your time.
@@Jacob-dw4vdPeele better than Aster and Eggers 😂
Is it a bold choice to just be book-accurate with your character design?
Maybe its just me, but iI never consider Nosferatu, or Dracula for that matter, to be scary. Its the psychological and atmospheric qualities that affect me. That said, this film was exceptionally well crafted esp in Eggers' style. I loved it. Considering this is his most mainstream film to date. I prefer his "smaller" scale films though like The Lighthouse, a masterpiece imo.
Stuckmann probably won't read this - but on the off chance - what'd you think of it compared to the old versions? (Murnau & Herzog's). Which is your favorite of the three?
Very comparable yet different.
"As the husband of two young daughters”
Oh dear. - Freud
Teasing the origin story of Quismodo perhaps?
The moustache was historically accurate, and he's not a monster, he's a "solomonari" it's mentioned in the movie, he's an evil human wizard
It is a true story as well.
Love Shadow of the Vampire
Were Eggers' other movies all original? Because that would make this his first adapted project as Nosferatu is technically a version Dracula.
Well, not only that but it clearly wouldn’t be an original anyway because it’s a remake, so to speak.
Yea this was just fine for me. That’s it. Definitely doesn’t hold a candle to Eggers’s other works or the predecessors
out of the recently established “big 3” of new horror directors, aster, peele, and eggers, eggers is my favorite
I can't agree more, Aster hasn't impressed me that much, Peele is going more towards race horror, but Eggers time period peices are so beautiful, creepy and amazing.
@@philipbouchelle483race horror??? Because it's a Blk director who simply wishes to have only Blk leads like the dominant group has had and done for over a century??? I swear people like you get on my last nerve with that bs! Ugh 🤦🏾♂️
Peele is absolutely trash
Aster and Eggers aren’t really horror movie directors, there movies are more akin to a thriller. Jordan Peele has made both.
he did good with this one. highly recommend.
Dracula is not a romantic hero.
Can't wait to see this Christmas day. Also sick Carrie shirt there, Chris!
Eggers is the man .. I’ve loved every movie he’s made. Can’t wait to see it
What did you think of The Northman? Did you like it?
@@josebro352i didn't like northman it put me to sleep.
Probably my second favourite Robert Eggers film after ‘The Lighthouse’ but I’ve been a fan of his entire filmography, and hopefully will get more on the way
*SPOILERS IN REGARDS TO THE COUNT HIMSELF*
I LOVED Bill’s portrayal of Orlock.
Your lighting looks great here Chris
Agreed!
Regardless of the review …… looking forward to seeing this in the theater
BTW William Defoe also played Nasferatu.
Shadow Of The Vampire.
I already told my family that I'll be ducking out early on the traditional Christmas Dinner because I have a date with a Count Orlok.
Overhyped to the highest order and nothing scary or original about it
Ooooooooooh scary white petiole. Boo. 😂 He’s terrible.
Jordan Peele is the most overrated horror movie director in today's time. They could announce he was going to direct a movie coming out three years for now and Critics would rave for it.
I think you miswrote Ari Aster
Nosferatu suffers the same thing that Brams/Cappola versions- pacing . Both films lose me 3/4 of the way thru out . Nosferatu is brilliantly shot and is awesome for it set pieces cinematography and time period . More Orlock would have been great .
I am going to see it this weekend, but wait....
"You need to support a movie like that whenever it's in theaters."
You nailed the point.
Is it worth it? I’m sick of seeing people put out bad movies
The way you described it, sounded a lot like Copalla’s Dracula. Rewatched it recently, MUCH better than people make it out to be. I understand why people say it isn’t scary but it scared me at times, however the atmosphere and general wafting uneasy terror is enough for me to be scared. Incredibly mastery in visual effects too.
wonderful movie that is kicked in the nuts by Reeves and Ryders really bad acting
The original film wasn't Hollywood slasher scary either. Have a look at the original, it's like Murnau filmed one of his nightmares.
My theater was COMPLETELY sold out tonight. Was very happy for Robert Eggers. Worth the wait!
I haven't been hyped for a movie like this in a long time
Big Eggers fan here, but sorry to say he turned the Lord of darkness into an HIV infected patient with COPD pneumonia who is suffering from complications of corticosteroids.Coppolas version or even the Demeter were much better than this wannabe gothic story😢
I'm wondering which of Eggers movies is your favorite
Would love if you talked about Herzhogs Nosferatu as well
Who was flickering the lights?
Nosferatu! :-)
Best Actress for Lily Rose-Depp Academy Awards
Agreed
Nosferatu 1922 is the first vampire movie, and an important part of early cinematic history.
@@BullyMaguire4everYeah, still one of the best vampire movies, one of the best horror movies, one of the best black and white movies, one of the best silent movies, and also one of the best overall movies - not just as a cornerstone and touchstone of cinema history.
