I've been really excited to see this movie between Eggers, Dafoe, and the setting, I REALLY wanna see this movie. Loved The Lighthouse, so I hope the movie lives up.
3 out of 3 movies Eggers has made before are nothing short of masterpieces. This one is his first remake of sorts. I hope it's not a sell-out. After "The Witch" and "The Lighthouse" both being stellar in their own special way of combining period piece, psychological thriller and mythological horror, I became apprehensive when a trailer for "The Northman" made it look like he had taken on a mercenary project jumping on the mainstream bandwagon of the recent viking hype. Only to find out that my pessimism was unfounded when this third weird, precious, excentric piece of eggerism hit the cinema and turned out to be yet another raw yet intelligent work of visual narrative art with an indie vibe but a bigger budget. I can hardly wait to see "Nosferatu" at the theatre.
Chris, I'm so proud of you for deciding to focus your creative efforts on things that make you happy and shifting away from the negativity that spiral that takes many UA-camrs into broken lives. Whenever I watch your videos, now, I see a human who appears to be thriving physically and I can only hope is also doing so mentally. Keep it up!!
Watching him and Jeremy Jahns basically have the same career until Jeremy decided to go more and more negative and Chris sticking with the positive is wild to see.
Interesting the first thing that struck me about Chris’s review (and I’ve only seen a few of them so far)… is a sort of cliché I observed long ago: a generalization about the way men and women tend to talk about and analyze movies. I always noticed that when I went to movies with my movie fan pals and their girlfriends/wives, we guys would tend to talk about how blown away we were or not by the technical or constructed aspects - this sort of “ mechanical” aspect, such as the cinematography, the effects, the specific directing style, script, etc. Whereas the women tended to discuss their reaction to the film in terms of the characters and plot, discussing what degree they were engaged that way, and whether the emotions and motivations, etc. were believable. My male friends and I may be raving about the cinematography. Well, our wife was put off because “ It was ridiculous! she would never have ended up with that guy!” I still tend to see that dynamic today … as a generality, which of course admits of many exceptions. But even in lots of the “ first time watching THIS movie reaction videos” when they are done by females it’s a lot more about the believability of the acting and emotions of the characters and the plot. And that’s what I found myself noticing about Chris’s description of the movie. Very “dude’s eye view.” It was constantly a sort of “ breakdown about the craft” analysis, even when talking about performances, it was from the sort of “ behind the scenes” view of “ the demands that Director and filmmaking put on the actress and whether she was up to it” versus a review that sort of inhabited the emotions and narrative of the film. Just putting that out there :-)
What I noticed about my approach to movies is that: The first time I watch one, I will be more perceptive on the side of what you sort of dubbed the female view, the characters, conflicts, narrative structure, mood, internal logic, and that is mostly also what determines whether this film has any chance at all to move up to "classic" status in my view after repeated viewings further down the line. When I revisit a movie, I will be more perceptive on how it is visually, technically, symbolically, rhythmically crafted and paced, what you perceived as more of a tendentially male orientation. So far, all three movies by Eggers, The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Norseman, have convinced me in all regards, and thus my hopes for his version of Nosferatu are high. Both older movies, the one from the twenties and the one from the seventies, are amongst my favourite horror and vampire movies, so the bar is set especially high...
I hate that it got moved to next year in germany, but It does not waver my exitement at all. Been waiting since it got announced that eggers wants to make this.
@@BradLad56 If I remember correctly Early January, I think the 2nd. It was supposed to come out November though, so the move was a bit much :( Same thing happened to Queer and The Brutalist
From the teaser/trailer alone, this one was absolutely on my radar of "must see it asap", and hearing this doting review has only enhanced that desire.
Saw the movie two weeks ago, really one of the best movies of the year for me, the way I’d describe it is like a very very dark poem made into a movie, with just some jump scares here and there, but this is pure dark poetry by Eggers, highly recommend it.
very excited for this one. Eggers is also one of my favorite directors when I saw The Witch and I've been hooked since. I'll for sure be seeing this in the theaters!
Stuckmann probably won't read this - but on the off chance - what'd you think of it compared to the old versions? (Murnau & Herzog's). Which is your favorite of the three?
I was really hoping to be scared by this film. I'm going to set my expectations a little more realistic. This is still my most anticipated of the year.
So far. Of all Eggers films. Which aren't many, is The Lighthouse. It's not scary but he knows how to immerse you into the story with audio and the camera work. It's great that he continues to work with William Dafoe. He's doing some of his best work in his later years. Can't wait to see this soon!
Only recently noted that "Die Hard" and "Home Alone" are basically the same movie on another scale, in a different genre, and for another demographic. And they are both Christmas movies.
Robert Eggers is probably our best horror director working now outside Jordan Peele. Very excited to see how this Nosferatu compares to the original and Herzog versions.
Dude, Jordan Peele shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath. He hasn't made a good film since "Get Out" and even that wasn't "scary" at all and was just a thriller with comedic elements. And "Us" and "Nope" were just embarrassingly bad. Peele's reputation as a "horror" director has evaporated quicker than Shyamalan's did.
@redadamearth Recently watched Get Out for first time and it was Garbage and absolutely Stupid. Overhyped to the highest order and nothing scary or original about it

I must say I'm not familiar with "Nosferatu" in any way apart from an old Spongebob gag. But it had me the second Robert Eggers name appeared, and I'm all for a good and gothic vampire movie.
@@BullyMaguire4everYeah, still one of the best vampire movies, one of the best horror movies, one of the best black and white movies, one of the best silent movies, and also one of the best overall movies - not just as a cornerstone and touchstone of cinema history. The remake by Herzog of Murnau's classic movie, made in the nineteenseventies, is also a great adaptation.
I first saw Nosferatu at the age of 7 at a screening by my towns library - didn't sleep for at least 3 days. Showed it to my wonderful daughter when she was young - we both still adore the film. Chris if the remake is not scary then what is the point?
I haven't seen it yet, but the writer/director's other films so far, The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Norseman, had a specialty going for them that I have rarely, if ever, seen anywhere else: An eerie, atmospheric, dense narration that works on multiple levels at one, in an elegantly crafted manner; namely as a well-researched period piece when it came to production design, costumes, characters, mentality, speech, but also as a psychologically consistent character study, as a psychological thriller with believable conflicts and character dynamics, and at the same time as an uncanny piece of subtle (or not so subtle) horror involving beliefs in the supernatural which draw heavily from the mythology and zeitgeist of the period portrayed. If all of that comes together beautifully, I don't need to be scared shitless, it's enough for me to imbue myself in the worldbuilding, take a deep dive into the characters and their external and internal struggle to survive in and make sense of a seemingly hostile and cursed world, to enjoy myself revelling in the spookyness, melodrama, and myths, of a bygone era. Hopefully, Nosferatu will offer me something more in that vein... On another note: Have you and your daughter ever watched the remake of Nosferatu by Werner Herzog? That one is scary as well! But Murnau's original is still my favourite.
I cannot wait for this movie it's only month for us in UK. Never been so obsessed with it!! I love every aspect of this movie, this gothic horror of my dreams, ever since Bloodborne game, Dracula 1992 movie, Interview with the Vampire.
