    VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
    In this installment, I debut the PS1Digital and xStation mod kits. These are two amazing pieces of technology as the PS1Digital yields perfect digital video which can be up-scaled internally to 1080P while the xStation is a psuedo (O)ptical (D)rive (E)mulator which yields nearly 100% perfect compatibility.
    Both the PS1Digital and xStation are in late beta stage and will be available for everyone to purchase VERY soon.

    Constructive criticism: Zoom out after you're done soldering an area so people get a realistic idea of how small these connections truly are! You make this look VERY easy, when in reality, most people don't have the skills to perform these mods. Love your content!

      I've done the team xecuter mod chip install on the later generation switches. it was indeed very small soldering, like small enough that you need magnification to see exactly what you're doing.

      I can concur here.
      I just did my own PS1Digital install, xstation and recap of the PS1 motherboard and PSU. Everything on that list is trivial, EXCEPT the PS1Digital.
      In terms of difficulty, I'd say the recapping effort was a 4 or 5 out of 10, xstation 5 or 6 out of 10, and the PS1Digital a 15 out of 10. Those pins on that GPU quad flat pack are TINY. Voultar made it look super easy to align it and solder it. I had nearly as much trouble with just aligning the thing.
      While my install works, and I spent a good 30 min with a volt meter verifying no bridges or shorts on the PS1Digital and the test points on the xStation, I do have X's on my G3, G4, and G5 lines. Pin 20 (G4) is shorted to pin 19 (3.3V) and it's not on the top side. It's shorted on the under side of the flex. The system boots and plays fine, just looks a little 'blocky" until I get that fixed. I'm not brave enough to try to remove that GPU flex with an iron alone.... so I need to invest in a hot air station. Then I'll remove that GPU flex and take another shot at soldering it in again.
      Dan warns people right on the page where you buy this, this is NOT for the novice and best left for the professionals. I did my install without any magnification. Those flexes are TINY, those IC legs are TINY, and it's hard enough to see by the naked eye to even align it, let alone solder it. Then you have to get the flex aligned, without your fingers being too close, so that you can slip that iron tip in there and solder, without risking burning your finger. I'll say it one last time, that GPU flex was not easy. The other 3 flexes were considerably easier.

      @@brandonkick get yourself the plugable USB microscope. I have one and it makes doing any surface mount soldering a joke. and buy some gel flux paste no clean. those two things will make any soldering job so so easy. trust me on that, ps1 modding, switch modding, xbox modding, anything modding. the microscope also lets you inspect all your joints up close. the plugable one i recommend because its really cheap and the quality is SUPERB. crystal clear images and 60fps continual. if you search youtube there are videos of other people using the plugable usb microscope to do very small soldering. the only thing I will add is that you need a decent CPU to handle the microscope or you might notice FPS drop or lag, I used it on my 10 year old laptop and the FPS was really bad. but on my modern desktop 60fps continually which is more than adequate for soldering.

      @@StreetWorksMedia I actually bought that very USB microscope a good 3 to 4 years ago.
      For whatever reason, I always felt it too laggy to use for actual real time soldering.
      To be perfectly honest, I decided to give er the ole college try. Last time I hooked it up, a few days ago to inspect my PS1Digital install work, the display was very laggy. Even at stock settings. That was using VLC media player.
      I downloaded the software off the website, installed it, and ran it. I can easily see using this to solder with, just not at 1600x1200 res... it does add a few frames of lag there. At 800x600 or 640x480 the display is basically lag free.
      Once I get my hot air station, and remove the PS1Digital flex, I'll be using the pluggable USB 3.0 microscope to resolder the flex!

      @@brandonkick I'm not lagging at all. I run it on an i7 8700k, with a GTX 1080 and 32GB ram. It runs perfect realtime. no delay or lag at all. Weird.

    One way I use to lift the legs of fine-pitch ICs is to take some kynar wire and thread it under the leg I want to lift so it loops under it, heat up the solder joint, and give a gentle pull on the wire, pulling in the direction the leg points toward. This work great, since it always lifts the leg only enough so that the wire can slip under the lifted leg, and it sweeps any excess solder out. It's also great for doing 2-3 legs at once. Works 100% of the time, every time.

Planning on replacing the PSIO for the XStation and getting a second Mode to replace my GDEmu if moving a single MODE between the Saturn and Dreamcast is that big of a pain in the ass (Still waiting on my preorder to arrive since it shipped recently), but it seems like given they both use a single firmware they probably expect people to do this who don't want to spend too much money. Hell, TerraOnion added Sata support as a cost effective way to add games so I feel like they're more pro-consumer than the others.

Why do I need the disc drive if I have an ODE? Finally, the company that sells the Xstation doesn't think it's okay to dox customers.

    I'll have to defend the PSIO here. There's a number of dealbreakers for me with the X-Station. First, you don't get to keep the laser assembly with the X-Station, you do with the PSIO which means you can keep playing from real discs. Also, the install of the X-Station is harder and more permanent. Lifting a pin on the far edge of a chip is ok but lifting the other pins is risky as you'll end up bending them sideways like we see in this video. Even if you succeed in lifting those pins, if you do that I would say more than 2/3 times you'll break them for sure. This makes the X-Station install somewhat permanent. You can't go back and forth all you want and have the laser assembly back into place and play from a real disc.
    Also, the PSIO has wider mainboard revision support. X-Station is compatible up to the SCPH-700x revision. PSIO is compatible up to the SCPH-750x revision. PSIO is actually theoretically compatible with all PS1 revisions if you're not afraid to do some more soldering/hacking. There's a video on UA-cam showcasing a bare PSIO board inside a slim PsOne.
    About the compatibility issues you mentioned with the PSIO, Matt from Cybdyn-Systems has been making a number of breakthroughs lately. He's finally managed to fix Jackie Chan Stuntmaster NTSC, He's gotten a hold on a DTL-H2700 debug board, he's designed a bus sniffer to further debug and he's planning to add SPU support (for Vib-Ribbon and Uka-Uka's mouth in Crash Team Racing). One year/one year and half away from now and the vast majority of those problems will be fixed.
    One thing that you didn't mention is that the PS1Digital includes the PsNee code to play imports and backups which removes the need of an additional Modchip but what's it good for if you removed the laser assembly to install the X-Station ? PS1Digital is also said to be 100% compatible with PSIO by its creators. Nothing is said about compatibility with X-Station at this point.
    To me a PS1 model SCPH-550x with PS1Digital, PSIO and SPDIF output mod will be the definitive PS1.
    One last thing, Matt from Cybdyn-Systems has shown a sneak peak of his own upcomming ODE. He's yet to officially annouce it. SO STICK WITH PSIO.

    • @razorblade1148
      @razorblade1148 4 роки тому

      @flynnz 4 роки тому

      Are there any games that don't work on PSIO other than Jackie Chan and the menu crash of nfs? Most of the issues I hear about now seem to be from bad rips but admittedly I haven't been keeping up with this stuff.
      Would also like to add that it is way too early to say the xstation is near 100% compatibility as there are thousands of games that will have to be thoroughly tested and that takes time. (My understanding is the ps has some very weird/picky timing that is hard to mimic). Prematurely making that claim is what hurt the psio's reputation after all. (In addition to the price and annoying firmware lockdown heh)
      On a side note matt had mentioned features coming soon for the psio - like saving game saves to the SD card. If that ends up happening, that alone is a huge advantage of the psio.

    Voultar is correct about the PSIO. For a device with "near" 100% compatibility, there are a TON of bugs. I gave up on updating mine a long time ago, as the new menu versions would continually break other games. Transferring files is also not a simple 'drag and drop' process, as is the case with Terraonion's products. CDDA, multi-bin, and multi-disc titles all need to be converted, plus you have to manually patch libcrypt titles. Furthermore, certain games require alterations to menu settings just to be able to work. With good ODE-type devices, all the games simply work without requiring any user intervention. The only positive about the PSIO is that you retain the use of your optical drive. Considering how long PSIO has been out, Cybdyn Systems frankly have done a poor job perfecting it. I wish the XStation had been available sooner, with true near perfect compatibility out of the box.

    I could see modding the PS1 being very worthy. Personally, I like the PSone (aka the slim) but that's just me.
    One thing people don't seem to know, there are FOUR versions of the PSone in the US. The first version had the rear port which gameshark used as an injection point. The second version fixed a few issues with the first version but sadly didn't have that port! It was removed. But then the THIRD version had both the fixes and the rear port! I know, because we ended up having all 3. Our first version died on us, had to send in for warranty, got back the second version which no longer had the rear port! Then we ended up buying another which happened to have the fixes AND the rear port.... Then of course you had the slim version late cycle (which I love especially that white color).
    I would end up wanting to mod the slim.... honestly. Typing this, I am wondering if there are even slim moding videos *thinkingface*
    EDIT: a tiny pair of tweezers would help so much with pulling up the pins around 19 minutes.... watching you use a knife was kinda cringe but you did it so, a success is a success.... but damn.

      Cybdyn appear to be very active in trying to iron out bugs (I believe they've finally solved the Jackie Chan Stuntmaster issue), They get a lot of flack for tightly locking down their firmware updates, TerraOnion do exactly the same but don't get so much hate

    • @billy-waynejeffcoat4828
      @billy-waynejeffcoat4828 4 роки тому +1

      @@TheDeeplyCynical well I would gladly buy a psio if they basically sort everything out. I like things like the GameCube mod chip and sd2sp2, not things like the gdemu where it basically replaces the disc drive. I enjoy mods until it basically removes a functionality. I'm cool with the HDMI taking the serial port because to my knowledge that had no functionality.

    Last night, I modded my PS1 slim, I haven't put the last two crews yet because the casing needs a warm bath anf the buttons need WD40 because they're getting stuck, then a brand new Voultar video popped.
    My question is, how do you use Codebreaker and Gameshark digitally?

    • @tomferrier6143
      @tomferrier6143 4 роки тому +6

      All the ODEs allow for some sort of disc swapping. Assuming you can add them to a queue instead of just sequentially named in the same folder, you would be able to do that with the xstation. Disc 1 is the GameShark, and 2nd disc being your game, and just open/close the lid to switch. We'll see more when it's released but I suspect it'll work painlessly.

    • @el_teodoro

      Dont use WD40...
      Use dielectric lube

    • @goldenlotus9613
      @goldenlotus9613 3 роки тому +3

      @@el_teodoro Right, dont use WD40 or petroleum base. most plastic case cannot deal with petroleum base lubricant. A few month next the plastic will crack and unrepairable. I suggest that you use plastic safe lub. Some chain lub work fine, because chain using plastic part as bearing. Electric lub will fine too just abit more expensive then chain lube. I'm using Q Plus 204 / 203

    I have a MUCH, MUCH EASIER method for lifting those 8 pins off the chip for the XStation MOD. Just use a bent needle!
    I lifted the pins with the bent needle, using the adjacent pin as a "leaver", the soldier used in those pins is so little, that it separates very easily without any kind of snap, or damage to the board pads. It's like they were soldered with butter! The lifting took all of 3 minutes, with no need of any additional tools other than a needle and a magnifying glass! Now I just have to wait until my XStation arrives to do the rest of the work!
