@Sped Racer I think you're talking about bilinear filtering (and even trilinear) where the textures are smoothed out. It certainly looks better (unless it goes too extreme like N64) However doom and quake (which had pixelation before 3d accelerated versions existed) were fine. "old retro consoles and computers" a question i always ask myself when i hear that is what will that mean in 20-30 years? PCs since the late 90s have evolved to a personal setup rather than a "brand" and consoles lately are more computer-like than old ones. For those who would say "Nah the old consoles will alwyas be considered retro" remember that 80s rock is considered classic rock now....
My guess is that the connectivity requirements for current devices will make them terrible retro stuff. Since 7th generation consoles(X360, PS3), physical copies are useless when running games off of it. It always tries to reach the central server(Xbox Live, PSN etc.) for updates, which will eventually fall apart and be discontinued in the future. If they don't do anything for offline play in those consoles, their future will be bad. I don't know anything about the Nintendo consoles though, they may be better off than Microsoft's and Sony's in terms of offline play in the future.

@@svenbtb It is relative. If you are only going to use it for one console, it is a waste of money. But if you have a decent collection of retro machines it is cheap considering the good results. I have 14 consoles connected to the framemeister, even consoles in which I have HDMI adapters like my Wii, Gamecube and Dreamcast go through the framemeister before going to my TV and the results are amazing. In the case of Gamecube forcing 480p with Swiss, going through an EON MK II, through a framemeister to rescale to 1080p and finally through the Mclassic it is glorious as seen.
It seems very interesting and a testament to the Retro communities dedication to keeping these old consoles alive. @KippyKip check out Voultars install video, the xstation is said to support psnee modchip functionality. Last I read the psnee supported antimod games such as Spyro 3.
Personally, ive enjoyed ps1 and ps2 for the novelty of the games produced back than . I guess the kids feel the same for present day titles. Unfortunately I dont get the kicks out of new titles like I used to. Spyro sure did bring back the memories!
Although older consoles can be modded to output newer signals, their original output was intended for CRT TVs with all of its quirks, so I always try to get RGB cables for those consoles who support it. But I'm sure many AV enthusiasts will love this video!
I picked up the Dreamcast mod and the quality is all it's cracked up to be (as long as your TV is properly configured), this mod on a PS would really represent the pinnacle of console gaming for me
One thing worth mentioning is that you lose the physical Serial port with this mod. Not many games used it, but for those which did, you can no longer use the link cable. PS1Digital is introducing a software alternative for the serial link through WiFi, so you can do this if you have two PS1's running PS1Digital nearby.
I have been collecting games from my childhood for over a year now. Was looking good crt tv from internet and someone near me gave a way 36' inch Sony Trinitron for free. I can't wait for the time i move to new house and have my nostalgia room completed with ps1, ps2 and good old crt tv.
This is actually really cool. I was just recently having issues getting the PS1 to work with the framemiester, so I might have a look at this. The big issue I have is with games like Chrono Cross and it’s 240p/480i switching for the menus. The framemiester doesn’t handle this well at all, so this might be a good alternative.
Being a retro purist can be pricey but options are always a good thing. I'd love to see a comparison between between PS1Digital vs PS3 emulation vs PS1 classic vs a Pi.
Kinda going the other way here :) Starting to prefer composite cable over RGB scart in some 3D PS1 games, especially those with heavy dithering. Find that things tend to blend nicer with in the blurrier image and I don't play on a gigantic TV so I don't mind the loss of sharpness.
Cool video. I bought the component cable por ps2 a few moths ago and improves a lot the image quality, it would be amazing see the same games with the hdmi output.
I’m a biiiiiiig fan of these pure-digital HDMI mods... the only problem is that they sometimes have unintended side effects. For instance, NES HDMI mod alters the original clock speed of the system so that the output frame rate adheres more to the HDMI standard. For that reason I’m not satisfied with the available mod for that particular console :( UltraHDMI for N64 is very good. I don’t know much about the inner workings of this one, but hopefully it’s the same. And I’d love to see them for more and more consoles! SNES would be incredible, if that were possible... surely it too has a digital frame buffer of some sort? Genesis may be possible, though there is no such thing as digital audio, so it would have to be a video-only solution. Run the audio out separately.
Great video! I just watched MJR's video on this and he has a comparison shot of it & a PS3 running PS1 emulation and while they both look close I think the PS1Digital wins. Not to mention its running on real hardware and not emulation. I hope the same team behind this product works on PS2 next because PS2 is in dire need of a HDMI solution.
1:48 - It's worth nothing that RetroTINK now has a SCART option as well. It doesn't have all the fancy options of an OSSC, but that also makes it easier to just plug in and start playing without fiddling with settings. Also, it's really good about resolution switching. That said, an HDMI mod is also my preferred method. Once the modding is done, it's just a simple HDMI cable with no converters at all to worry about. I can't wait for sales to open on PS1Digital.
I don't know if you've ever covered it, but that 1702 takes in S-video. You just need a little dingus that converts the mini-DIN plug to 2x RCA. I used that setup to play my OGXB waaaay back in the day. The quality difference is large.
I noticed at 1:20 you mentioned Composite cables that came with PS1, here in the UK they came with an RF out adapter and those were arguably worse than composite.
Why even bother with this when a PS3 can do everything and more for a fraction of the price? Sony literally released downloadable versions of their games that are optimised for HDMI. The 'Classics' games on PSN.
It's worth baring in mind that there's a patching tool for PS1 isos that replaces the dithering patterns with colour banding patterns, which depending on the game can look a lot cleaner. If you have a solution for running patched games, this could be a good pairing with the PS1DIGITAL.
For me the best ways will always be Original Hardware + CRT (Component, Composite or S-VIDEO even RF), next would be a well configured Retroarch running 240p on a CRT. The CRT gives an impression of a high resolution and also deals with dithering the best way possible.
To be fair, I think the PS1 kind of requires an analogue RGB output + a proper CRT to look the best. The "crisp" pixels are just "too crips" on digital displays and causes a very unpleasant noisy image. The CRT masked a lot of the PS1 faults. and it is hard to replicate how it looked back in the days. This is the primary reason I actually enjoy emulating the system. I can choose between soft CRT-filters or just bump up the rendering resolution, (depending on what works best with the game). :)
It's impressive that we always focus on image quality, but the sound from this mod is absolutely beautiful.
And that sound was compressed by youtube, don't forget. Thats amazing stuff!

I guess the kids feel the same for present day titles.
Unfortunately I dont get the kicks out of new titles like I used to.
Spyro sure did bring back the memories!
What a time to be alive ^^. I bet that Cyclone 10 beast could easily be used to map the entire system
Although older consoles can be modded to output newer signals, their original output was intended for CRT TVs with all of its quirks, so I always try to get RGB cables for those consoles who support it. But I'm sure many AV enthusiasts will love this video!
I picked up the Dreamcast mod and the quality is all it's cracked up to be (as long as your TV is properly configured), this mod on a PS would really represent the pinnacle of console gaming for me
Found an SCPH-5501 two days ago for $40 CAD. Going to order my PS1Digital once they come in Sept. I’m so stoked to play Xenogears on this beauty!
Your beard is looking great, man.
total yes!
I have that same Commodore monitor, have had it since 1984 and grew up gaming on it.
Everything I try to Fix/mod with a soldering iron ends up worse and/or in the bin.I will never learn ; ) great vid bud.
Good to hear, keep us posted on those other options! and as always thanks for the upload
Nice! Your channel is awesome. I miss your chiptune soundcloud though.
Definitely exposes dithering but i honestly enjoy the retro-dithered look. Thanks for sharing this mod!
Really cool, I'm surprised this wasn't available sooner. Or maybe, this has been known about it just hasn't been in a commercial product?
It looks and sounds great! I am genuinely impressed!
I am really excited for the OG XBOX Digital solution as the resolutions on the that console are high so digitally should look super nice
Man, I got to watch Voltuar install a beta version of this and now get to watch MVG playtest it? Heck to the yes!
Those mgs clips sound so crisp
Kinda going the other way here :)
Starting to prefer composite cable over RGB scart in some 3D PS1 games, especially those with heavy dithering.
That dithering tho
Great job documenting and showcasing this mod for the PS1! I have to ask, why no Sega Saturn content on your channel?
9:17 Yes! Already I'm sold!
Mvg rocking that badass beard. Looking good man!
I don't know if you've ever covered it, but that 1702 takes in S-video. You just need a little dingus that converts the mini-DIN plug to 2x RCA. I used that setup to play my OGXB waaaay back in the day. The quality difference is large.
I noticed at 1:20 you mentioned Composite cables that came with PS1, here in the UK they came with an RF out adapter and those were arguably worse than composite.
wow that image really looks amazing. didnt know there were such hardware things
You hear that sound (3:14) ...that sound...that damn sound
Why even bother with this when a PS3 can do everything and more for a fraction of the price? Sony literally released downloadable versions of their games that are optimised for HDMI. The 'Classics' games on PSN.
People are amazing. As tech gets better and prices drop we need to look after our old consoles
2:31 mvg: “......which is known as the PlayStation digital 😏”
You forgot to mention the mighty Vita TV with the Sharpscale plug-in.
The digital sound is amazing.
It's worth baring in mind that there's a patching tool for PS1 isos that replaces the dithering patterns with colour banding patterns, which depending on the game can look a lot cleaner. If you have a solution for running patched games, this could be a good pairing with the PS1DIGITAL.
Fun fact. On the PS1 models that shipped to Poland were the typo on the label at the bottom.
Would be great for developers so they can show their new homebrew titles on high end displays. Though I do like the CRT blur and all that jazz...
An Australian that says Soddering! Blasphemy! Mate, you’ve been in the states too long 😂
For me the best ways will always be Original Hardware + CRT (Component, Composite or S-VIDEO even RF), next would be a well configured Retroarch running 240p on a CRT. The CRT gives an impression of a high resolution and also deals with dithering the best way possible.
The price is rather painful but the image quality is truly next level!
I have a playstation 1 connected to a 27 inch Sony Trinitron from 1998 looks amazing :D
Very Cool. Outside Of My Price Range But I'm Glad To Know These Kind Of Enthusiast Mods Exist. Great Work To The Developers.
