240 Volt Electric Home Charger Install by Qmerit 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV & 4 Soft Benefits to Owning EV

- In March 2023 we had a 240 Volt outlet installed by an electrician through GM's included (with the price of our 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV) home charging installation through a company called Qmerit and we noticed one big thing you need to think about BEFORE you get an electric charging outlet installed. We also detail the 4 benefits we've realized during our first 2.5 months of using our electric vehicle.
Great video! I bought my Bolt EUV in December and really like it. It is my first electric car and first new car in seven years - I'm 65 and have never seen such a change in vehicle technology over a seven-year period.
For daily driving, use 70%-80% of the batterie. It will last longer and degrade at a slower pace. If you charge to 100% plan to drive immediately. I have the bolt EV, and love it.
I do this with my 2018 LEAF as well. No point in charging to 100% when I don’t need the range.
Q Merit did an outstanding install for me. The level 2 install spec out #8 awg but the electrician ran #6 awg & I asked for a disconnect switch at the receptacle location (which was not required). No additional charge. Total install was free of charge. My electrical panel was about 50' from the level 2 receptacle.
That's a pretty long run, that might be why he used the larger gauge. Run length effects gauge required due to increased resistance.
@@rp9674 #8 awg would have been within code specs. The electrician said they always used #6 awg for their installs. The code specs out that the fuse or breaker has to be within specs of the receptacle/load, however, you can always increase the wire size. Future proof if you decide to go with a 48 amp rated EVSE.
Hardwired is recommended, but I got plug-in so I can change the charger without an electrician. It came in handy when my electrify America home charger failed six months out of warranty. Oops, didn't know they had GFCI for evse.

I went through all of this but did it myself. I’m using the circuit breaker to turn the charging circuit on and off to save wear and tear on the portable charger. I only unplug the charger when I road trip.

QMerit was a total rip off for me. They wanted to charge me $1600 to install the 220 volt plug 1 foot from the breaker box. Chevy was supposed to pay $1000 of that leaving me with $600 out of pocket. I refused it. I ended up buying the materials myself for about $100 and had my brother who is an electrician come and do it for a case of beer. The job was done in less than an hour. They basically wanted $1500 per hour to do the job.

The great variance between keep the car running in warm days versus cold northern winters could change the life of the car.
Thank you for watching. That's true of all cars in general. The Bolt has coolant-regulated batteries.
Just hardwire the EVSE and you don't need to worry about the GFCI breakers.

We are in the long queue for a Cadillac Lyriq and are contacting local electricians to obtain quotes for the charger installation. This way we can compare costs to see if Qmerit is ripping us off. We have been told that Qmerit will contact us at some point in time when our Lyriq is in a production schedule. We live in a condo so installation is more involved than a private home.
@larryroelofs336 That is a unique experience of doing the EV charger install at a condo! Glad to hear your association is allowing it - we haven't had a good experience with shared living and the board refused to allow electric charge stations in our former building 🙄 I would have loved to get a Lyriq! @@paradisetoday two things are helping us move forward. First Florida law states that a condo board cannot refuse an individual owner who wishes to have an EV charger installed. The board must accommodate the request and just make sure the installation does not inconvenience other owners nor interfere with infrastructure items. Secondly, The owner must pay for the installation. I am President of our association and have entertained several electricians to gather info and present it to the owners. We will get this done. Our association has always been proactive.
Getting ready for the Qmerit experience. I'm a little bit nervous because I have 150a service, hope I dont have to upgrade the service to 200.

Everything went smoothly with the inistall. Level 2 charging really put my mind at ease when I've had to drive more than expected throughout the day. Flint area is a little bit of a desert when it comes to DC fast charging.

I just purchased a Blazer EV RS. I am startng the process with the install. I see they will also pay up to 1,000 towards install on charging stattion and up to 250.00 for permits. I may just have the box put in vs. just the outlet.

Just beware, unless your breaker box is in or close to your garage, it may cost you more. The quotes I was getting were 2K. I ended up having a local electrician (not qmerit) who did it for 1000, then I ended up just getting the $500 EVGo credit. Hope everything works out! It was kind of an annoying process, but I love my EV and it was totally worth it!
The outlet is the correct orientation for the Grizzl-E plug. If you turn it over for your portable charger you're going to bollix up the Grizzl-E.

Keep in mind the reason why electricians install the bond up, is because it is the safest way to install an electrical outlet.
Was it a standard installation, or did it cost more? Qmerit just suggested an electrician whose estimate is $2661 from my basement to my garage!
Ours was the "standard home installation" so we didn't have to pay anything. I know they said that if we didn't qualify for "standard" then we would get a credit towards the installation but luckily we have a newer electric box and the plug only needed to be installed less than a foot away from our electric panel.
HI, we just got a 2022 Bolt EUV. We have been mulling over our charger options and were wondering if you ever had a reason to use the charge that comes with the car away from home.

We actually haven't used it yet away from home. We do keep it in the car just in case we need to use a wall plug but never found the need. If we were to visit relatives or friends we will probably use it but since we live in Florida now people seem to come to us.
My charger was recalled that came with my 2022 bolt euv. They dont have a new one available yet. No fix
I'm sorry to hear that. So far, we haven't been contacted but thankfully we don't use that charger cord at home anyway. We had bought an aftermarket unit to mount on the wall. Hope they fix that for you soon!

How is the Grizzl-e home charger working for you? Considering one for my upcoming Bolt EUV, but not sure if would prefer a 48A hard wired one that might be smart. But maybe the Bolt has all the necessary smarts already.
@gogogut We're really happy with the 40 amp Grizzl-E Avalanche charger but, caveat, we've only been using it for about 3 months now. For us, the slight increase in charge speed of 48 amps (from the 40 that we get) didn't outweigh all of the benefits we feel that the Grizzl-E charger gives us. They do also sell a smart charger but what's included in the Chevy app and the car itself is enough for us. Thanks for watching and good luck with your decision.
How much did it cost for them to install the 240v outlet in your garage?
We were lucky - it was actually included with our Bolt EUV purchase. GM contracted with Qmerit and they hired a local electrician to install it.
What if you are leasing? MUST you use their certified electrical?
We weren't required to use Qmerit but we did because GM was paying for the installation. There's some good info about "Home Charging Installation" at Chevrolet.com/electric/ev-charging/home-charging/installation. Not sure how it works with leasing a vehicle.

I wonder why the standard prosedure in America is to install an outlet specifically for EV charging. That's not even legal for electricians to do in Norway.
I don't know, but the plug seems to get a solid connection, it was completely clean after three-and-a-half years.
Because our standard outlets are 120 volts, in Europe you guys use 240V. Nobody typically has 240V in their garage.
A lot of garages have a 240v (aka 220v) outlet for a dryer, like mine. Had a new one installed in a better location.
@@spoonmanTX I am aware of that, but why not wire it directly in the charger? That’s always the better choice in terms of safety. An EV charger should always be a dedicated circuit anyway.

@Joshua Ramos We tried to get a charger the other day when we went to Epcot but they were all taken. I didn't know they were free though! That's awesome!
They are not free anymore. Occasionally, when there is a network problem, you can charge for free. But most of the time it is $1.50 to connect and $0.35 per kWh afterward. There are ChargePoint DCFC units at Disney Springs (near Cirque de Soleil and those cost a bit more per kWh. The L2 chargers in the garages at Disney Springs are ChargeUp (not ChargePoint). Disney has painfully FEW chargers on their property. L2 chargers in abundance would be a great thing for those visiting the parks.
