Many actresses try to fill this song with riffs and runs. And while they sound skillfull or dramatic, they forget the real meaning of the song. Betty went the other way. She was subtle, simple and powerfull all at the same time. I love her rendition.
I saw her in Cats, 'way back when. It felt like she reached right through you and rattled your spine. I remember the audience gave this explosive sigh as we applauded her - we'd all been holding our breath during the last phrase!
I was home on my first leave from the Navy, we traveled to NYC, my mom and I, to see our first Broadway show, Cats. Ms. Buckley’s performance was extraordinary, we became a lifelong fans, so much so, we traveled again to NYC years later for Sunset Boulevard to see her blow the memory of Glenn Close out to the curb.
Truly, this one is my favorite rendition of hers, out of all the ones on youtube. She's very present in this one. I also wish there were more copies of Over You, or at least a clip of her doing the whole song from the film, like as a DVD extra or a criterion feature, if it becomes a criterion collection film one day. Also, her character Dixie deserved much better writing than what she got, but that can be said of most female characters in cinema.
Have never seen this ! REALLY love the subtle and some not so subtle differences in the phrasing in this version. The pauses, the holding of some of the notes... It is a flawless and beautiful performance 💕💓🎹🎼🌈
This is a silly comment considering how much I love this but...I can't help noticing how, when Miss Betty let's go, she moves the mic. away from her mouth. She'd blow the place up if she didn't. Imagine how that must feel, to open your mouth and have that come out... BEAUTIFUL!
I hate to break it to myself but this could be the best version of Memory I have ever heard. Part of it I think is the way she holds the notes; I've never heard anyone do that with this song.
@@zentraveler1834 my God I took your advice and just watched her appearance on Johnny Carson and you are right - it's even better, which is hard to believe.
Not to gloat, but seriously was their a prettier 80's actress/singer/stage performer? Already a teacher, too being so generous to share and pass on, all that she had learned.
I called the number on the screen for Los Angeles hoping Betty would answer.. It was a cholo name Esteban who answered.. I was somewhat disappointed. However, I am meeting Esteban this afternoon at MacArthur Park. He is my new friend.
She hypnotized me so much I just tried to make a donation 36 years after the damn telethon ended .
Omg. I just passed away. 😂💀

well said....this is an old forgotten and shunned, prostitute cat singing to be accepted, filled with shame and regret, subtle is an understatement
She is the best ❤❤❤❤❤
Her version sounds so much "meatier" than the other versions i've heard. Her notes sound full and her emotion doesn't overtake her singing. I love it.
No one has sang this song like Betty. No one can. Betty has set the standard.
I saw her in Cats, 'way back when. It felt like she reached right through you and rattled your spine. I remember the audience gave this explosive sigh as we applauded her - we'd all been holding our breath during the last phrase!
Listen to her, OVER YOU song. The same year. What a passion and voice. Brings tears to my eyes.
The most hauntingly beautiful rendition.
Check out the tony award version where she really belts it out. Amazing!
perfect description!
What a supreme voice, so clear and joyous!!! Absolutely beautiful!!!! 😺

True joy! Thank you Betty Buckley! ♥️Xxxooo
Amazing. Saw her doing this in 1983 at the Winter Garden
Me too, Charles Pepper. Tickets were a retirement gift from my Beautiful Wife, after 20 years in the Navy. ⚓️🇺🇸⚓️
I did also. Amazing performance in person.
Exquisite!
Her best "non-broadway" performance of memory, even with the phones ringing in the back, she perfectly focuses and slays!!!!

I am new to her but I can tell you I dont believe anyone has even come close to her singing this

I luv you, Betty!
Truly magical.
Outrageous-

This version tears at my very soul♡♡
You go Betty! You rock!
Just beautiful!
So powerful and pure! Thank you!!
su voz es espectacular
Gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!
This was very soon after or just before she was on Johnny Carson as well!
back when a phone was on a table or the wall
❤️
The piano player starts too fast and she slows em down. True diva.
Look for her performance on Johnny Carson, it blows this away

Wow so impressed that you noticed this.
3:10 is why you came here.

karrezza Prettier: Whitney Houston
@Wonder Boy Well, Whitney was actually a renowned model before her legendary singing career took off. Can't say the same for Bette....
@@GarageStudio7 reknown?? Lol that's pretty generous
@@jumpforjoy6 "Reknown" may be pretty generous because I don't know what that is, but she was definitely renowned....
At least Betty didn’t ruin her voice by smoking crack, cant say the same for Whitney (R.I.P.)

Ringing phones...
Still "Abby" from 8 is enough in my book. But this is beautiful, tearing up.
Or Ms Collins from the movie Carrie
Or the suicidal old woman from the happening
What year?
This is from 1983.
Also, she was filming or had done Tender Mercies! I think why the redder hair!
I think Tess Harper was in Tender Mercies NOT her, if memory serves me.
Betty had a huge role in Tender Mercies......she was amazing!
gosh those telephones are annoying
Perfect. In every way.
