    I run a B&B on Loch Ness (Pottery House) and agree with everything you say, however I would like to make a distinction for people coming to the UK, especially from the US.
    Here a B&B tends to literally be a spare room or rooms in someones home, so you may not get use of the garden or lounge, etc. Just a room with bathroom plus dining area for breakfast. The place you're showing in the video and all of the B&Bs I've stayed in in the US would be classed as a Guest House here in the UK, although both would be owner run, so you still get the great personal service.

    • @Zm54321
      @Zm54321 5 років тому

      johnlochness True! I was seeing this video while recalling my B&B experience in European cities where I’d stay if I can’t find a hotel room. They’re literally my last option and more often than not you get to share the bathroom with other guests, and oh, the breakfast is usually simple and made/offered with the cheapest ingredients & coffee. So I just go to any nearby coffeeshop. But of course if you go to the country then you’d find something like the one in the video.

      Johnlochness, are the B&B’s in Europe less expensive than staying at a hotel?

    • @johnlochness
      @johnlochness 5 років тому +1

      @@seacoast4950 Generally yes, however there is a range of B&Bs just as there is a range of hotels. We're 4star and at peak season we charge £125 per night inc. breakfast. 4star hotels around here at the same time charge £200-£400 per night, often without breakfast.

    My husband and I fell in love with the B&B experience on our honeymoon in Ireland. We bought the Bord Failte pass which was accepted by many hotels, but 99% of the B&Bs. The service was beyond compare, and by and large the food was really good and usually made with fresh, local ingredients. If we were getting ready to move on from one town to another, the hosts would often make B&B recommendations for you in the new town, and frequently offered to book them for you.
    Adding: Jocelyn did a lovely job with this video!

And yes explore your local environs as you will find surprises that see how your community connects with the rest of the world. Its worth to discuss the downside as well. I stay at BnB at my first choice but there are lot of hassles as well. You have to sync with the host or guest for check-in and check-out if its not automatic. Even if its automatic there can be mistakes by both sides. Both sides have to be very careful with each other, one bad incident can make the whole experience miserable causing negative reviews on each other. Not so good. :-/

  • @rogersexton7857
    @rogersexton7857 5 років тому

    In the USA the phrase 'B and B' clearly has a very different meaning to the one it has in Europe. In Europe (not just in Britain) a B and B is an ORDINARY family house with 1 or 2 or perhaps a few usually quite small spare bedrooms that house guests for the night and serves breakfasts but no other meals. See also the Comment from 'Mum Blic with which I agree.

    Good video but I would not call it a B&B. I have the feeling that this looks more like a boutique hotel (or themed hotel)
    When I think of a B&B: I think of a much more simple concept. A family house with 1 or 2 extra bedrooms that hosts guests. Something you find all over Europe (for example: Germany, Scotland, etc)
    Normally not a fan of classic style: but this boutique hotel/B&B (;-)) looks very interesting. It's feels more like time traveling! Thanks for tip.

    • @ProfessorWolters
      @ProfessorWolters 5 років тому +3

      I would disagree. They have it set up much more in the B&B way than the boutique hotel. There is no front desk, no hotel feel at all. It is a huge old mansion so that gives it that feel, but we have stayed at Boutique hotels that were former homes and this one and there was definitely a difference.

    • @mumblic
      @mumblic 5 років тому

      @@ProfessorWolters Hi Professor I understand what you are saying, but my argumentation is also based on how I perceive a B&B. As a kid I traveled all over of Europe (with parents) and always stayed at a B&B. It was always a private home with normally no more then 3 bedrooms for guests and one little side room for breakfast, shared bathroom, the rest of the house was living space for the owners. There was never staff. Always ran by a family. I know that the last 20 years B&B's are much more commercialized and that the term is now used more to describe an accommodation with a B&B atmosphere . Today sometime I book a hotel online and when I arrive I see that they present themselves as B&B and vice versa. I don't want to fight over words, but the way they presents themselves on their websites (events,weddings, etc) is miles away from my last B&B in Scotland ran by an old lady who served me breakfast in a corner of her living room. After breakfast we talked for more then half hour about the weather and her cat ;-) I hope we can agree that we perceive B&B's differently but that in the end it doesn't matter that much!
