  • I replace my 2m antenna BNC connector with a spiffy new PL-259. I am not very good at soldering but I am trying to get better.

my i offer a few suggestions. you need a much larger soldering iron, and a wider tip. the wider tip prevents temperature loss. a coax connector is a lot of metal, and you need the mass of the tip to keep the temperature as high as possible. when i used to solder these things, i used a soldering iron that was over 100 watts, i'm thinking 125 watts. you want to get the connector as hot and as fast as possible, and get the heat off it quickly, so the dielectric doesn't melt.
coax prep: (1) put all the parts on the coax before you strip it. ie: adapter, and coupling ring (the screw on thing - yes i just looked it up.)
    (2) us a wire stripper or a sharp single edge razor blade (for scraper). gently use the blade to go around the coax and cut the outside insulation off.
(2A) i think i used to measure maybe 3/4 to 1 inch down and cut through the braid and the dialectic almost to the center conductor - remove the outside shield and braid. now you can be more careful to cut the dialectic so you can get the center conductor - better to carefully twist the dialectic off so you don't nick the center conductor- the radio signal tends to travel down the skin/outside of the wire.
(2B) now measure back another 1/4 or 1/2" (i think don't have one around) and with the razor blade, carefully cut the outside insulation off the braid, don't want to cut all the way to the braid. now at the center conductor side of the outside insulation, make a small cut parallel to the coax, this allows you to peal the insulation off so you don't nick the braid.
    (3) be more careful with the braid, you want to have it all there.
years ago, we all would expose more of the braid and solder like you did, but i saw a few videos that show soldering at the end of the adapter. this is a wonderful idea, as it insures a good solder joint and makes sure the dialectic isn't melted. with this method, you should solder through one of the holes to bond the adapter to the main pl-259, which keeps it from loosening and gives a better connection.
