    Thanks for the video. Question - I literally have the exact same hardware as your video, have the exact settings you laid out, too. However, as soon as the repeater radios are turned on, the red light (sits below VFO/MR button) comes on for both radios. I tried changing the TX / RX freqs by going up to 147.420 and 148.420 but still same problem. Any suggestions? (this video got my subscription)

      @@AM-KX is your receive antenna near electronics like wifi or a phone? Also, does the surrounding environment have a lot of RF interference that you can think of? These would be the only things I can think of off the top of my head. It is a Baofeng so don't be surprised if you need to get new ones to do it successfully. I also have something like 10 or more UV-5R radios floating around the house and I did have to have a couple of the better working radios to make it work. Thanks for watching and subscribing!

But there's no wiring issue (wiring regarding the baofeng crossover box/cable that you have - which I have) or add'l settings internal to the UV5R that you know of that could cause it? Hello. I am a GMRS licensed operator, NOT HAM licensed. I notice you are using GMRS/FRS frequency and 2m band. We cannot cross band GMRS with other bands, only HAM bands can be crossed bands. GMRS repeaters has to be on same band with 5MHZ upscaling and we have to use a duplexer, if no duplexer, bad duplexer or untuned, the repeater will have the common phenomenon "DESCENSING". If a repeater has bad, untuned or no duplexer it will work while you are no more than 10 feet about it will work fine, but if you go further, you will hear just the clicking, that is caused by "DESCENSING". By the way, it is a great project if you are going to use it as cross band repeater

    • @thesaltyham7144
      @thesaltyham7144 Місяць тому

      Haha the bottom frequency is not used. There was no cross banding between services or even bands (2m/70cm). The radio laying down in the case was also on the 2m band and was the receive radio. Desensitization is actually caused by a stronger transmitter overloading the receiver causing it to not be able to receive weaker signals than the transmitter. The antennas are separated by about 30ft in the test I did to avoid desense.

    • @thesaltyham7144
      @thesaltyham7144 Місяць тому

      Actually used this repeater in my truck with antenna separation of 9ft at Hamvention 2023 and had no problems at all. A duplexer will give you the ability to use 1 antenna for transmit AND receive. I don't use a duplexer so I have to use 2 antennas.

    • @thesaltyham7144

    5:20 You've gotta mean 5.5 AMPS, not 5.5 watts... right? 5.5 watts just doesn't make any sense. Basic science says it's gotta take in at least as much energy as it puts out - and nothing is 100% efficient in the real world. 5.5watts at 13.8volts is about 75 watts input - which actually makes sense if it's putting out 40 watts. People say this amp gets hot during transmit, so most of that extra 35 watts is logically being lost to heat. 5 WATTS input, on the other hand, isn't enough to make something this size HOT, even if it was using 100% of the power just to make heat.

    How did you manage to get yours working? I've been having nothing with trouble with mine. First, I tried the method Rural Homesteaders did with a homemade crossover cable, and it didn't work very well. Spotty reception and it would just transmit static sometimes. It'd key up, but not transmit anything but static until I stopped transmitting myself. I got frustrated with that because I couldn't seem to make it work right no matter what I did, and so I bought one of these repeater boxes (K-Head specifically, it looks like you and I are using the exact same one) and it doesn't work either. It arguably does worse, instead of transmitting only sometimes, it doesn't work at all and just keys both radios up constantly. Does this to all of my baofengs and no change in the settings seems to fix it. Even just plugging in the recieving handheld causes it to be unable to unkey. I've been working on this project for months now and just can't seem to make any headway at all in getting it working.

    The thing that does the repeat is a pretty simple controller, although it sounds like it's just passing audio and maybe uses the VOX on your transmitting Baofeng. Aside from ID requirements (don't forget to ID your repeater), my chief concern with this would be desense. With two separate antennas, of course you don't need a duplexer, but without sufficient antenna separation, there will almost certainly be a problem with desense. If you really run an amp on it, you're definitely looking at a desense problem. Also, I'd say not to run your transmit radio at high power. The finals aren't rated for that kind of duty cycle. And it's going to get a bit warm. ...
