The mapdashboard widget was a complete gamechanger for me.
Whats widget called? Cannot find it
@@Bobsterrrr it's a ConnectIQ Datafield rather than a widget: MapDashboard by Erik.de.Vries
These setup deep dives are absolute gold mines. Thanks so much!
Ya! I didnt even have connectIQ installed.
That map dashboard is powerful! Its minimized my mian data screen too. I wish i could use it on my music controller section also, but its locked to 2 small info windows...
I also gained control of my lights without having to dive into settings or reach for buttons with the smart bike lights widget. It controls my trek lights wonderfully!
Thanks for all you do! Great work and Merry Christmas!
Excellent stuff Lana. Saved that vid for a Deep dive setup later on Edge 1040. Thank you for the time you’ve spent in sorting out this rabbit hole
Just got my 540 this weekend and after the first testride was a bit disappointed by the map only showing 2 fields. Now I already found this vid. I'll give this mapdashboard a try!
I just set it up on my computer, it works wonders!
I even use it on my main data screen to minimize info and maximize data.
lol! huge jump in traffic this morning and of course i came to your channel first to see what you'd done today! thanks GPLama! ❤
I put an order in LBS for a 1040 but this video is really making me think I could be happy with explore 2 for more than half of the cost. I’ll watch again when I’m back from work. What a spanner in the works now.
How do you only have 187k subs??? best cycling tech channel!
I'm one of a many. How I have these subs in the first place is the question! I cover a lot of indoor bike tech which had a boom during Covid... and a crash in popularity when things returned to normal. Bike tech is pretty niche, it's a relatively small market compared to more general tech/sport. Thanks for the comment and support!
I absolutely luvved 😍 your original video on the MapDashboard Datafield, thanks so much 👍 and have been a convert to 'Map as Primary/Screen1' (with 6 fields below) on my Edge 530, ever since ✅
Yep. I just setup mine like that. I moved the map to be my main screen with the mapdashboard underneath. Now my old main data screen is extra data. Still with the map dashboard, but also time of day, di2 gearing, and a timer (im testing timer vs elapsed time). I run elapsed time on my mapdashboard but may swap it to a timer. I setup a 2nd data screen to control my lights with the smart bike light widget. Then i have my music controls and the elevation page.
What 6 items are on your dashboard? Mine are:
Top: speed, heart rate, distance
Bottom: cadence, hr zone, elapsed time
Excellent production! I just got my EDGE 840 and I’m still learning it. I used the Map page while riding a route up in San Luis Obisbo and noted how useful it was. Adding all that other data would be great. I might have to choose a lesser amount however since the 840 is not as large of a display and I was already struggling with seeing some of the information on the screen. Adding more display would only exasperate that further. Cheers!! Great video!
Loving the Mapdashboard IQ app. In particular, the improved responsiveness of the GRADE field vs the Garmin field is fantastic!
Brilliant, yes would like a how to screen overlay..
Ya I want to overlay the garmin on my tv for while im destroying demons in diablo 4 and riding my trainer, so I dont need to look down at the info so I dont get killed by a demonic horde.
Try doing that on trail! Its also cheaper than a zwift subscription.😮 more engaging for the brain too. All the wins 🏆
I havent done this yet, it all exists theoretically, in my head. Im thinking some tt bars would increase game-cycling comfort. Maybe swap the diablo for Zelda. Or go old school with some road rash and pretend to be a mean biker! Might need to dig out the sega genesis for that last one. Maybe try your hand at a classic like paperboy.
I already feel sorry for whats going to happen to the controlers... so much salt! My gloves develop salt rings after 2-3 rides. Potentially even showing signs after 1 big ride...
Never stop doing what you do ✊🏾👌🏾👏🏾🙌🏾👊🏾
I like the Windfield and Mapdashbord. Always on at my Garmin 840.
Thanks
concise, clear and really well presented. Thank you Shane!
Thanks for the great video! I just got my Edge 1040, and I was kind of disappointed. Then, I found your video, and I'm all set up. Thanks again, and keep it up, bro!
Awesome! Thanks for leaving a comment too. It's always good to read positive feedback like this. 🙏🏼
@gplama What a fantastic video!!!
You've helped me a lot with configurating my new Garmin bike computer.
The dashboard app is a great tip!
Thanks for this video. I can confirm that this works for the Edge Explore 2 as well, as I was able to get the Map Dashboard and two other data fields together with my map on my unit.
Hi, how did you get the map dashboard to work on your Edge Explore 2? It says it's installed on my device, but doesn't show up in the menus when I am trying to configure my data pages...
This was super handy - thanks. I'm on a Creo 2 now, so I used pretty much the same layout you did but added in my remaining bike battery percentage. I'll go and ride with it later and see how it goes!
Thanks for the video! I just got the 840 and honestly regretting not getting the 1040, lol. That being said, I really wanted to know how to add couple of data fields with the map and their guide didn't help much so -- appreciate the video! :)
Great video! I have been looking for a way to check wind, and then I come across this video. I just set up the pro version, and it works great. Thank you!!
I'm here, going through all of the Lama EDGE videos :}}}}
This is fantastic. Thanks for sharing. I can now actually use my Garmin hah. My Wahoo was set up similarly and without the need of the add-on apps
Great info as always !!Cheers from Athens Greece
Thanks again for another great informative video. I have been looking for a way to get wind speed and wind direction in my 1040 so no need to open Weather app in my iPhone while riding. Just installed Windfield app in my Garmin 1040, went for a ride and it worked great. As soon got back home, upgraded from free to Windfield Pro. Thanks again. You rock!!
Thanks for the feedback. It's such a neat little addon. I'm glad you think the same.
@@gplama You have no idea. I ride every single day between 35 to 50 miles and I plan my rides following wind direction. Having wind direction and wind speed almost in real time in my Garmin screen is going to improve my times by a few mins for sure.
Been using the exact same layout with MybikeTraffic, WindField and MapDashboardMS for quite some time now. I've been dabbeling in coding for the Edge a bit as some screens won't allow for a full width datafield like MapDashboardMS, and have to have 2 small fields instead. At least on the 1040 there's enough real estate in 1 datafield to show 4 values imho. I've made it work that it shows 4 values, but still have to tweak a lot on presentation. Also for now it's non-configurable. The fields are preset, as in Speed, Cadence, 3s power and HR. Plan to make the fields configurable, and to make it 6 variants so you can have 6 different apps with different configurations.
I've asked the guy who developed the MapDashboardMS if he couldn't make a small datafield version of it (as he already has done all the hard work in coding, and only has to change the layout), but i've never heard back from him unfortunately.
This is awesome. I was searching for exact this! Thx a lot
You can have more than 2 data fields on the map now?! I've been waiting for it for 8 years, yay!
What an improvement for my setup!
Wow! Super useful! Thanks!!
Brilliant video. So much you can do with the Edge 1040. Why would I need to upgrade to the Edge 1050. I only regret not getting the solar version because of the memory size 🤦
I’ve just bought an Edge 1050. 🤦 I sold my Edge 1030 plus and used the £220 eBay credit against it. So I basically paid £370 for it including shipping
Screen overlay be amazing. Thanks gp
Thanks, very imformative. It could be handy explaining the little three numbers on the left of the WindField data square. I use "feels like", "chance of rain" & "UV index"
Those are all configurable. I offer close to 40 options I believe including air quality and wind chill
@@windfieldapp yep, it's my favourite IQ app!!
i second !!!1yes would like a how to screen overlay!!!1
Screen recording how-to, yes please, I've always always wondered how.
Great video. Very logical. I was so disappointed with my 840 Solar and how kludgey that map updating is. So little memory for a $800 (CDN) device. I can't believe that Garming can't/won't write a proper update process within Express, and owners need to rely on UA-camrs and KB articles to update. Sorry for my rant.
The 6 field dashboard is pretty nice, but sadly it becomes way too small on a 840, atleast for my eyes.
The regrets of not getting a 10x :)
A vid of your opinion about smart glasses would be nice, they would avoid having to glance down to begin with. But not sure if they work properly.
I am also feeling regret for choosing the 840 over the 1040. That extra screen real estate would have been nice.
Maybe the 4 field version of the MapDashboard App (larger fonts) would be better for the smaller Edge units?
Starting to feel the same way. I might wait for the x50 then change it up @@jwells2072
If you good with computer, HM's Diy in Garmin Connect IQ is really good. especially with map datafield.
Wow! That is quite an impressive addon!
TyreWiz video and details would be great!
I had to find this video again to configure my 1050
Great video. MapDashboardMS looks awesome. I have another question on screens that show when navigating. When navigating a course, is there a way to get the turn by turn list screen (which lists turns in order and shows distance to end at the bottom) to show up in the mountain bike activity profile? It shows up for me in the gravel profile but not in the mountain bike profile, even if using the same course. This is on an 840.
Brilliant!!!
Hi Shane. I've been using Map Dashboard for a while now, but recently discovered it might be behind the huge sensor issues I've been having with my Edge 1040 Solar. Basically if I have Map Dashboard installed, I need to do a full reboot of the Edge unit before each ride, or my sensors will not connect. Have you faced the same issues? Seems like I'm not alone if the Garmin forums are anything to go by.
My Edge2 is a great speedo based data field page with lots of data elements u can change in express or connectiq
What in the world happened to the 3D Map Orientation they had on the 1030 plus???? I just purchased a 1040, and found this option removed!🤬😡
Me too😪🤬
What like a behind the back 3rd person view?
I really wanted the 840 but it was sold out in many places in the uk so I got the 1040 for an extra 38 Aussie dollars. That is like 20 pounds. 👌
Shane, I'm trying to implement your map page layout on my new 1050. However, when I add the three data fields the full-width data field is above the two side-by-side data fields instead of below. I can't find a method to rearrange these data fields to the two-on-top, one-on-bottom configuration. Any thoughts on if this is possible?
I’ve noted the same. I’ll be pinging Garmin about this. I would like the full width field on the bottom like the x40 series, your comment confirms it’s not just a ‘me thing’.
@@gplama Thanks...I thought I was missing something like dragging the fields to switch locations.
I was wondering the same thing. Wide field is up top for me as well, as opposed to at the bottom.
Nice 😁👌
Any chance you'll be doing a video using your Garmin with your indoor setup and any tips or tricks for that
Indoors I use the lap screen 4 data fields to monitor power readings. I might cover that in a quick video about how to quickly compare two or more power meters. It was how I knew the new Shimano R8100-P with the firmware update wasn't great within the first minute of riding.
Really wish Garmin would somehow support a "virtual cyling" thing hooked up to Zwift and Rouvy. None of the APIs support it either so making something like it as a ConnectIQ app is also not possible :(
@@Adantehwhy if i may ask? If you zwift, all of the data will be transferred to garmin, including training readiness and so on. What would garmin edge add?
Hi Adanteh it gives you ride stats without the drafting or power ups benefit.
Looks good on your 1040/1050, but kind of disappointed on the 840. The fields at the bottom are so small. Hard to process the data at a glance, particularly for MTB
Do Garmin 1040 show all details Like camping, Warmshower, Airbnb, Bivouac and nature, Unusual accommodation, Guest room, Cottage, stage lodge and group cottage, bike rental, bike repair nearby etc?
Can we get one for Karoo 2?
How do you like the Garmin vs wahoo? Most of my gadgets are Garmin, but the screen always seems better on the wahoo, especially in sun light. Any thoughts? Love your videos! 🎉
It depends. The Edge units win when it comes to number of features and extensibility with ConnectIQ. The Elemnt units nail the core functionality well.
@@gplama any issues with the Garmin screen in the sun? Some UA-cam videos make it look like reflection galore
@@gplama any issues with the Garmin screen in the sun? Some UA-cam videos make it look like reflection galore
It really depends on the sun angle on the unit and intensity of the light. Mid summer here with the sun right overhead makes anything difficult to read on the handlebars. The Hammerhead Karoo 2 is hands down the hardest to read in direct sunlight, then the Edge units, then the ROAM with its almost-textured anti-glare screen is the best.
@@michaellee7046 Here in Shanghai the sun is very intense in summer. I've had no issues with reading my screen even in the brightest sunshine.
Thank you for a great video . I noticed on your computer you have wind speed and direction. Is that metric on the 840 and 1040 only? I am on the fence between those two computers. Do you think it’s a good idea to go big? Thankx
That’s the awesome WindField ConnectIQ addon. Compatible with a lot of Garmin edge units, including those that are quite old now. Check out my video of WindField here: ua-cam.com/video/1pAONWnjYOk/v-deo.htmlsi=Py8uNnwrNoBQkW0P
How do you use the mapdashboard on ClimbPro? I would like a full-width data display similar to the Map data screen (in your vid), but it seems like you have to choose two data fields, resulting in a half-width mapdashboard.
Very useful stuff, I did add 3 data fields with via IQ as u did, wind, traffic and mapdashboard, got it all synced, however I can see the map and wind and traffic only. Mapdashboard is not vivible on my screen hehe, any tips how do display that too? Cheers
All good now, smoky :)
I’ve updated my edge 1050 firmware via Garmin Express and I still only see a max of 2 data fields for the map. Which doesn’t allow the view that you have, which requires 3-4 data screens. Any idea what I’m doing wrong? I also restarted the Garmin unit and updated my Garmin Connect 😢😢😢
Never mind had to turn off elevation profile. It now works but the map dashboard is above the two other fields, unlike yours. Which is fine.
I'm getting a crazy new option on my Edge 1030 Plus for Komoot (IQ) mapping - not just routes but a totally different map appearance. Looks better than Garmin maps and has scrollable data screens embedded with the map, but it is so sluggish on my 1030 that it is unusable. Only mention I can find is a Komoot support page. No fanfare and no videos anywhere!
Some of the initial feedback I read wasn't great, so I haven't looked into this. My motivation to continually use/review bad products is low.
@@gplama It's a shame as it looks a lot prettier than Garmin's map but I just want my head unit to work when I go out, not be a beta tester for them.
Your radar traffic data display appears to be vertical within the data field (that is your chosen data is stacked instead of side by side). It's the opposite on my device and I can't find where to change that. It causes the numbers to often draw on to of each other and become unreadable. Was that a configuration?
Have you ever get information about the difference of the 5 Map details is. Since the Edge 800, this settings and other in the Map Settings page are very special and not (good) documented .
>>> Video about Screen recording would be nice
The map detail levels was a rabbit hole I went down a little while back. All covered here: ua-cam.com/video/wOSF34S8UDg/v-deo.htmlsi=iBHE5zvOncpYbX7l
Shane! We've been desperately looking for a map screen with a workout overlay, do you know of one??
Can you change activity profiles on your phone with an Edge 830? I don't see the option in Garmin Connect..
Will Garmin Edge show anything if I just plug it in and do nothing (without exercise)? Will it show the speed or something?
Can you show me how to do this with the climb pro screen for the 1050? I ended up getting one but I’m not using it till it’s set up properly
This is how to best set up the ClimbPro screen with more data shown: ua-cam.com/video/9XasUZUVn30/v-deo.html
Than you very useful, I've always been hesitant about using connectIQ apps due to increased battery drain. Not an issue on 1040/solar on most rides but could you investigate that too? Also what are you backlight settings? I know this was covered in one of your older videos and not sure if you kept it the same with 1040?
I’ve done extensive testing of my app plus lots of others and have never been able to see any meaningful battery difference versus no ConnectIQ field. Only thing that really seems to make a difference is having the backlight on more
It's a difficult (but not impossible) one to test. Radar detections, sunlight intensity, sensors used, smart notifications, screen used, etc all contribute to battery drain rate. Recent beta firmwares have been problematic for battery drain. Follow-up updates appear to have resolved this. I'll make note to come up with a few tests (any excuse to get out and ride more!) :)
Looking for ability to have profile total odometer setting to keep track of miles on each bike I have. Would like to have lifetime odo and also ytd odo. Does anyone know if that is available for the 1040?
In my 1040 I only have the option for 3 data fields at the video spot at 6:45. Is there a setting I can do to update this to 3? Or were you using a device with more data fields available?
Anyone? @gplama Edit: have to disable the "show elevation profile" as was pointed out by Shane!
Problem with the 1050 :( the 3 screen layout has the single full width element on top and the two smaller elements below ... it doesnt actually work wiht the mapdashboard fields half way up. odd that Garmin has changed this and not allowing the user to select where the single full width element should be. and its way worse in the new layout 1 over 2 than the old, 2 over 1. Hope they fix this or Shane, maybe you have the answers ??
This has been raised with Garmin. Still waiting for their reply. The MapDashboard field still works fine with the single full width field in with this inverted ordering.
Thanks Shane. It does work but being that bit further up screen and with mid 50’s eyes it doesn’t work so well. Hopefully they will just add it as a layout option when you scroll through, ie 3a and 3b with the single bar being above and below.
Does a Garmin unit actually automatically sync routes made on Komoot or is that still an issue?
Not sure on that one. I have no issues with Strava route -> Star it on Strava -> that syncs to Garmin Connect -> Star the route on GC -> it syncs to the Edge.
It's a shame, activity profiles can't be edited through the app for the 530.
It’s pretty clear the x30 series have been sunset. Tough for those with the 1030 Plus which is a great unit that has missed out on the new ClimbPro free ride and a few other things.
how to change line color on garmin 540?
I've recently purchased a 540 to replace a 530. Regardless of the combinations of settings I choose, my map screen will not show any roads except numbered highways. What am I missing?
Plug the 540 into a Mac or PC and load Garmin Express. Within that is the map management tool. Check your local maps are loaded.
@@gplama thanks, I'll give that a shot. eta: it worked. For whatever reason, my device had the SE Asia maps loaded. Who'da thunk?
Help, Just got the 1040 used your direction and created the same profile. For some reason at the top mine shows the street name but no t the direction to turn, any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you!
Not sure on this one. It's likely an option in the navigation settings within the bike profile.
Using the mobile app doesn't work with the 530 does it?
Not for configuration of screens, no.
I have a 1030 Plus and I have tried everything and cannot get the profile elevation to not show. No matter which way it is toggled, the elevation always show on the map. Am I missing something?
Sounds like one for Garmin support if the toggle isn't working.
@@gplama Thanks. I will check. I wonder if it had anything to do with being indoors trying to change settings. I will contact support. Probably something I am missing.
So i dont need a phone to setup and use this device?
You can set it up and use it without a connected mobile. A lot of the connected features (mobile alerts, LiveTrack, music control, etc) won't be available.
This for Wahoo please! :D
Stay tuned! I have a quick video for Elemnt units coming soon. They don't have this level of configuration though.
@@gplama nice! I am interested to see what you get out of the "Limited" customizability of the wahoo, where those connectIQ-style third-party datafields are not availiable (yet?). Keep it up!
I followed this guide but only get 2 data fields with the map included. So not the 3. What i'm doing wrong?? I have the 1040 solar
Turn off the elevation profile on the map screen. That’ll allow you to have 3 or 4 fields, not just 1 or 2. Also ensure you’re on the latest firmware.
@@gplama that worked! just can't find the windfield option and the dashboard
@@sjoerdberg2862 You'll need to install it via ConnectIQ - ua-cam.com/video/1pAONWnjYOk/v-deo.html
Can't find mapdashboard on the Android IQ connect store. Any recommended ways to get this on my 1040 solar?
Hmmm.. apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/b3dc604d-ffb0-4cfd-99be-c2cdeac2215a should get you there.
Thanks, it worked. Appreciate all your videos. Winter here in Montana
I don’t get the option to edit activity profiles on my 1030 plus in Android app.
One for Garmin Support. Ask them to implement it!
In Data Screens > Map > [Always Show Map, and Show Elevation Profile turned off] > Layout and Data Fields, when I click I do not get the chance to go to Layout 3 with multiple data fields, I only get Layout 0, Layout 1 and Layout 2 with 2 being 2 data fields. Do you know what's up with that at all...?
ConnectIQ is also not showing as a field group I can select 🤔
So to anyone else that comes across the issue, this seems to be because the firmware / software the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar shipped with hadn't updated yet. After syncing it for a while I got the option to update and then that update gave me more Layout fields (Layout 3 with the 3 data fields as shown, with the largest of them plugging in to the Connect IQ MapDashboard with its own 6 fields) that I could then use. The Connect IQ not showing up was because the Garmin Connect IQ is a separate app than Garmin Connect so you need to install it first, then it will appear automatically in the list of fields.
Also when setting up the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar it's worth noting you can't just follow the onscreen instructions for pairing with an Android phone, you will need to actually go into your Android phone's Bluetooth settings and pair manually with the Edge 1040 Solar before they can discover each other and complete the setup process in Garmin Connect on your phone / on the Edge 1040 Solar device's setup walkthrough.
Otherwise looks great, I've now got all the data fields I want on the MapDashboard field on the Edge 1040 Solar's Map screen, Shane Miller GPLama explains setting those up on the ua-cam.com/video/HCb7OFJqUj8/v-deo.html video but it's fairly simple through the Connect IQ app's MapDashboard widget's settings.
Thanks a million Shane - you've saved me months of headache messing around trying to get the right fields to populate and allowed me to dive straight into training. Really appreciate it, liked and subbed!
there's a way to not show the description on map? turn right on... turn left...
what the hell happened with recent Garmin Edge updates? on my 840 all roads are one pixel thin lines now ! with no street names, it makes orienting only more difficult ! and thin lines are barely visible in the sun !!!!
also edge 840 is freezing when I try to follow my route (70km, 6h ride) from the other ride (it responds with 10-20 seconds lag !!)
Sounds like a full reset would be handy here.
Is that Mystic Mountain playing on the video
Yep!
What is the software version?
19.22 is the latest on Edge x40 series GPS.
Funny how things have changed: The once innovator Wahoo, is not sitting behind and getting lapped by everyone else!
Just upgraded from a 520 to the 540 but not liking it so far.
My biggest pain point (besides the hard to press buttons and non-intuitive interface) is that the 540 does not automatically power down after disconnecting from the charging cable.
With my 520, once I removed it from charging it gave me a 15-second auto power off countdown and then turned itself off.
With the 540 lacking this Auto Power Down feature requires me to perform an additional 3-clicks of hard to press buttons to power it down. WHY?
This is so annoying. From what I've discovered online, this feature was removed starting with the 530 and users were pissed off then. Now it's carried forward to the 540.
Why would Garmin not include an auto power down feature after charging? If I take a turned OFF device and plug it to charge (which it then turns on) and then its completely charged and removed from the charger, it should return to its OFF state. That is only LOGICAL.
I can see how lacking this feature its possible to forget to power it down manually and then wake up the next day with a dead device that remained on all night.
My eyes dont see near objests well with the age so i cannot use this , i only see blurs on screen.
Glasses?
i use glasses but no prescription glasses for cycling glasses also you cannot see well the far with glasses.@@landixus
Fair point. Are you using an Elemnt by chance?
@@gplama no i use 1040 cant see even the regular fields, i wish garmin has the ability to increase font size
@ozgurinsan Have you looked into any ConnectIQ fields that might show the mectics on a single page-field in larger fonts? This is something I'd be interested in covering, so I might have a look myself.
Is connect iq free?
Yes
shame you cant use connect iq and the new stamina data fields on mapdashboard
Arrgh. Very frustrating. I wish GPlama would show up at my work and I will go over what to do for 8 hours. Then next day when it doesn't work ask him why he can't get it to work. Perhaps my review will have been too fast, and maybe I will miss the long button push here and there. Plus no room for questions- wanker
What’s your problem?
I think this is excellent and you know your stuff. But you speak too fast and assume everyone can follow in real time. In a way it's like the Garmin 1040 itself. Unintuitive and assumes a high level of knowledge from the watcher/user. I used the 1040 in France last year and I might as well have had my granny on the handlebars, sorry head unit, and she's been dead for 50 years. I can't decide whether the Edge 1040 is brilliant or the most high tech piece of crap I've ever bought. And believe me I have tried. I've watched videos galore, read the manual. There have been times I was sorely tempted to throw it in the nearest bin, Have Garmin leaned nothing from the phone world. I shouldn't have to watch videos to figure how to navigate, should I? Am I missing something?
You’re missing politeness.
@@gplama I do apologise. There must come a point where users pass from incompetence to mastery and forget how badly designed the interface is. And it is. My impoliteness is directed mostly at the device, which is a wonder, but almost useless if you don’t know how to use it. So I would politely ask the presenter, lovely guy as he is, to please speak in a measured way and not whizz through every move like lightening. On the other hand maybe the tutorial it’s not meant for the likes of me. I don’t know what more to say so I’ll stop.
Thank-you. I'll take your feedback on-board. 🙏
