  • I test two similar colors: Tamiya TS-89 Pure Red and TS-49 Bright Red since it’s impossible to compare with the Tamiya swatches or paint cap especially on electronic screens. I decide which red would be perfect for my Mazda RX-7 Savanna.

X-7 Red is equivalent to TS8 Italian Red, or Rosso Corsa used by Ferrari in Formula One from the late 1940s to the late 1990s. TS49 Bright Red is the almost fluorescent red Ferrari used in Formula One through the 2000s when their major sponsor was Marlboro, and appears to have been still been in use until last season, although as matt. This season (2022) Ferrari have reverted to a darker, Italian Red shade but matt.

Wow. Thanks for the Ferrari red info! Tamiya picked the right reds for their sprays! Thanks Mark.

Thank you very much! I have been looking for this information a long time. I want to convert some of my F1 collection Ferraris from the 2000s (mostly hot wheels Schumacher) to Marlboro sponsorship, but some white parts need to be painted red (rosso scuderia). I now know the Tamiya equivalent. Thanks again!

I'm pleased I decided to go for TS-49 for my Mitshubishi Lancer Evo 6 build, it seems like it's going to go well with it. Will report back once I've done it.

@@weekendhobbyist This is my first EVO and first ever build. Over this last week I was just browsing UA-cam as you do and I got recommended a video of someone making a model car, it grabbed my attention instantly! I'm 31 and don't know how I've never really gotten into this until now, but better late than never so all my kit comes this week. My EVO is from Tamiya, I got the standard EVO kit and the WRC version, going by the standard EVO instructions your meant to spray the EVO blue but there's no way in hell I'm spraying an EVO blue, they are meant to be red, white or black only in my book ha!

Welcome to the hobby! We need more model builders especially car modelers since most modelers build military or aircraft. I started as a kid but my real progress and focus started as an adult so you aren’t late at all. I’m pretty sure your first build will look better than any of my builds as a kid. Do let me know your progress.

@@weekendhobbyist I am already invested in cars and have been since a young age but I also have a keen interest in a few military divisions, aircraft would be my least known so I guess thats a rabbit hole I may one day dive into. My kit came today. I'm still waiting on my paint unfortunately. I'm hoping it's this week. Patience isn't my strong suit.

I find that candy maroon tint (as in the X-7) in their Dull Red, Mica Red, and Italian Red. Very frustrating if you're looking for more orange than blue in the color. As you pointed out, the cap color is no use at all.

The reason why the reds are different is because of the party number is different. There is like this on all paint, when you paint youre house you have to buy paint with the same party number or else it will look different even if its the same colour.

I think *orange* is due for a proper review/test as well ! Tamiya has a "clear orange" ( X-26 ) that looks very interesting along with 4 or 5 other different orange shades. Also, X-27 "clear red" looks promising

Has the naming of TS-86 changed? It's called Brilliant Red on their paint chip banner currently. I'm restoring my OG clod and I never liked the dark TS-8 color. It was too dark for what C/K trucks came in originally and was never the right fit for the Clod to me. Brilliant Red looks like original Crimson/Cardinal red where Bright Red looks like original Hugger Orange. Either would be better choice, just trying to verify 86 has changed in chemistry.

I didn’t get a chance to test that one because for the particular model I was building, I wasn’t going for a “Ferrari Red”. I will definitely test that one once I get an exotic car model.

      Hi Leon,
I’m not sure which model year Miata but I know they used lot of darker reds and metallic reds so maybe TS-18 or TS-39. If original Miata (Tamiya kit 24082) maybe use TS-39 or TS-86 if not X-7.

I haven’t used that one since it’s for RC bodies but I think it should be similar to Tamiya’s regular Mica Red. If you are painting a polycarbonate RC body, I would say Yes. It probably flexes more than their standard model paints ?
