What we all really want to know: how good are Teutonic Scouts? :D
Best scouts in Imp definitely. As long as the opponent do not research Light Cav they win easily.
Best counter to Smush, that tactics probably no longer exists but hey at least it is good at something
they beat Franks light cav pretty consistently
I think there are like ~5 civs with worse scout line in direct combat. Byzantines, koreans, malay and vikings come to mind.
I made some tests. They lose against frank light cav so against all light cav with blood lines and full upgrades they lose. But they win against Vietnamese light cav, britons light cav and they are equal to celtic hussards.
"Teutonic units are like a SLOW but UNSTOPPABLE force" - SOTL once said.
*laughs in mangudai*
Uầy có mấy bác cũng ở đây à ?
Dravidians would like to have a chat, they counter teutons flatout if they're left to get that unique tech
"And I'd say he knows a little more about AoEII than you do pal because he invented it and then he perfected it so no game could best him in the rank of real-time strategy games."
"...a bit slower than most"
Story of Teuton life...
How much Gold does your Civ need?
Teutons: YES YES YES
more like "Ja! Ja! Ja!"
Teutons: still less than turks :p
@@krankarvolund7771 Turks aren't even that gold heavy lol, they can throw free Hussars as meatshield for their cannons and HC/Jannis. Meanwhile Teutons with TK/SO/Pala...
Well farm bonus kicks in and you have more woods to sell I guess.
and they dont even have gold shaft mining :(
Their halberdiers are pretty dang good though
Teutons also have the team bonus of units resisting conversion. So their paladins are good against monks which could be a counter to raiding paladins.
I was just about to mention that. Maybe access to heresy also has to counted in as a factor.
Underrated bonus! They basically counter their counter. Their knight rushs were always deadly because of this. Killing all monks without losing one knight? - completely normal teutonic phenomenon! You HAVE to tech early into pikes to counter this and knights without husbandry are still faster than pikes and faster knights lose to them nowadays cause of the armor. Camels are a save counter tho.
@@creepy3ric they cant counter their counter. They are just slightly less vulnerable
That only extends conversion time by like 0.75 seconds so not really a counter to counter. It helps but we are talking about maybe keeping 1 unit out of 10.
@@Peizxcv That's not the case. It seems to be half of faith for free so a minimum of 1 extra second. The chance of converting every second is also reduced by 33%, so it's very likely to be more than a 1s increase. The max allowed conversion time is also increased by 2 seconds (from 10).
That can easily be enough time to kill a monk before he gets a conversion, and every conversion in monk battles is a huge swing. Watch a pro game where somebody tries to monk rush teutons and you'll see it in action. It's almost impossible even with aztecs
I hate how the attack animation is so inconsistent with the actual time of damage being applied
I know right... I'm a MOBA player and so im used to animation cancelling, nigh frame perfect orbwalking and so on. So you can imagine my horror realizing, that when unit finishes its attack doesn't respond at all with the damage being dealt... Ye, getting back to AoE is more difficult than I expected because of this. At least ranged units deal damage the way im used to lol.
Watching the desync between Kipchak's shooting animation and flying arrows is also a form of torture for me.
And then realising the ram's attack animation never syncs with the damage it deals.
@@PotatoSmasher420 - at least ranged units dead damage the way I'm use to
Cav archer and Kipchak...
Teutons using tank warfare before it became cool.
Why did the hipster drown?
Because he went ice-skating before it was cool.
I'll see myself out...
then what about the Bohemians?
last time i was so early i arrived before lithuanian militia rush
Ok this was good. :D
Once I saw a samurai griping it’s sword a little too much, as if he was anxious, it’s part of his animation, so could you do a video on unit psychology by watching their attack animation, walking animation, idle animation, and dying animations, also, how come villagers don’t run from a paladin but an eagle warrior runs just to get to a random place?
don't analyze animations! if you don't want any bubbles to burst don't read the rest of my comment, you have been warned!
an in depth look at animations would make people realize that DE (in both aoe 2 and the first btw) actually cut down on them. most units (mostly melee infantry) used to have different attack animations depending from which angle they hit their target (for example huskarls used to do a sweeping attack from the sides and poke when attacking diagonally)
@@JJBeauregard1 thats bc before DE units werent 3D models but 2D sprites, and every direction and animation was completely independent so they could do whatever the easiest to animate every direction, now in DE units are 3D models meaning that a single animation works in every direction
@@JJBeauregard1 I just remember that was thing
@@eRic-hr3yl Are you sure about DE being 3D models? I thought so myself when I first saw the game, but to me they look like hi-res sprites.
AoE always had animated models rendered to sprites, I think it's the same ones used for the unit icons. I also recall reading they redid every 3D model for DE, which would explain why they might've cut a corner and removed some attack animations.
The original difference in animation could have more to do with the limited screen resolutions when the game was originally released. I.e. a sweeping animation for Huskarls maybe didn't look right. They could also possibly have been limited by the sprite atlas size, like maybe the sweeping Huskarl attack animation just didn't fit inside the tile.
I'm speculating, I'm sure modders (or even devs) of the game could answer better. I've only dipped my toe in modding.
Edit: Got curious and just confirmed for anyone interested. Graphics are still very much sprites. They're stored as .smx files in the game folder.
@@eRic-hr3yl Both AoE2 and AoE2DE use 3D models that have been converted into sprites.
so basically, among the top 3 paladins, Teutons are the might glacier, with high armor and conversion resistance, but lacking in speed, Lithuanians are the glass cannon, having less staying power than the other two, but having the highest attack by a great deal... if they can get enough relics, and the Franks are the jack of all trades, having excellent stats all around, in addition to faster creation time.
wouldnt call lithuanians a glass cannon, paladins are still tanky as fuck.
yeah, but the other two in the top three are both significantly more tanky than Lithuanians, while not having anywhere near the damage potential. so it fits.
yeah that phrase only fits when the cannon is in fact made of glass, as in, when the unit can be destroyed or killed quite quickly, like the arambai.
however the paladins have extremely high hp and armor.
@@YoungSavage i suppose there's probably a better name for it, but it escapes me.
I think the conversion resistance is a significant benefit for paladins which maybe makes them equal to Lithuanians or Franks. Either way, they're firmly in the top 3.
yeah he should have included that for sure
I'm a simple AoE player. I see Teutons, I click like.
Teuton halbs can also take one more hit from standard fully upgraded pal (14+4) than standard fully armor upgraded halbs, making the civ a truly melee beast ;)
damn imagine if teutons team up with goths, they will be an insane combo, unless they are opposed by byzantines
@@candrarw5245 Meh, I'd rather team Teutons with something like Mongols or Huns. They're fast out of the gate and aggressive with good mobility and range units and can't be played defensively. Teutons are like a snowball slowly rolling into an avalanche with good defenses and economy.
That's the best thumbnail of 2020 ! ✨❤️
This is a fantastic video that you did on Teuton Paladins! I can't wait to try them out.
I live for the puns and phrasing of your videos Sotl, I've stolen the "Virtually because it's a video game" from your old Teuton analysis for so many game conversations hahah
This is just the break I needed today. Thanks Spirit, timely vid for me!
waking up in the morning and listening to melee armor considerations while having breakfast. Now, this is life. Thanks SoTL
This has to be the earliest I've ever caught one of SotLs vids.
Thanks for all the content Spirit.
Hey Spirit!
I'm a 30 year old dude that used to play AoE when I was like... 9 maybe. And your videos are incredibly awesome. You've got me hooked on this game again. When it comes to this game I think of it maybe a little bit more like star craft in terms of unit composition and attack/harrasment strategies and I haven't really found anything good like that for AoE2.
I know a lot of us would appreciate a video explaining more about strategy and attacking with certain units. Harrassing with Cav Archers and what are the pros/cons of it...
Anyways great vid!
Thank you for continously making content!
SOTL been following you since late 2015, and honestly you're the one who made me love this iconic game more than I ever have, thank you for all these great videos and content 💛 take care man and stay safe.
psst...you accidentally typed ironic instead of iconic.

omg, the celt joke had me rolling on the floor lmao
This video came just at the right time, the day before I was having a discussion with some friends about this exaxt subject
Please don't forget their resistance vs monks :)
At 0:50 "I didn't want to be too cavalier about my analysis."
I see what you did there.
Man I was just fresh out of a Teutonic Paladin win, took a break to open youtube and saw this. Woah !
How do I get my hands on your music? Spotify, youtube channel, soundcloud??
Teutons are the best because they're in no hurry to destroy you. Who needs running when you have a cape?
My favorite civ!
Slow but with T H I C C armor.
“I don’t want to be cavalier about the analysis” that cracked me up
Why no intro music, that s the best part of all your videos!!!
Excellent video, as always.
Teutons were my favorite before, and they are even more now c:
Hey, speaking of teutons, Spirit, I was trying some small experiments about Teutonic Knights (TKs) survivability, but I'm bad at making scenarios to test them... :c
My small experiment involved the infamous goth rush but small scaled, and how to counter it as teutons: a tiny arena with 1 elite teutonic knight and 3 elite huskarls, both at post imp. age, with attack move triggers to make it an automatic battle without micromanaging (TKs win), then 1 vs 5 (Huskarls win), then 1 vs 4 (Huskarls win by a little), attempted even to upscale them to 3 vs 15 (Huskarls), 4 vs 15 (TKs), 5 vs 20 (TKs, 4 of 5 survive), and 5 vs 25 (Huskarls), and I've seen somewhere between 1:4 and 1:5 army size comparisons it's anyone's win or loss...
I couldn't get data like health percentages remaining :c and possibly I could keep making some experiments like a simulated goth rush vs an army of boyars or teutonic knights, but as I said, I'm bad at making these sort of maps, any suggestions about making such test maps and gathering data like health percentage and such?
love how fast teutonic knights are in DE
C'mon Spirit! You know you want to do a half-hour long video talking about the pros and cons of the auto-scout sheep in the Mayhem update!
I unlocked it and it was a little disappointing. They all just follow the same path in a line. It would be cooler if there was some randomness and they spread out a bit.
@@SpiritOfTheLaw Huh, I didn't expect you to actually reply. I hope you're having a good day.
And yea, the Sheep auto-scout was even more disappointing then expected given their pathing. I was mostly being facetious.
"Don't want to be *Cavalier* about the analysis?" I see what ya did there.
Always waiting for your videos their fun to watch
Pleeaase Spirit could you make Cumans Civ overview? I like them a lot and your overviews helps a lot understanding how the civs works pd: great video as always, I watch every video you make when I cook even the old ones, keep your awesome work!
Hi Spirit, this is a very well made video overall and quite relevant, but I would have liked if you had taken the time to compare different paladins with the camel line, or at least the Heavy and Imperial Camel Riders. Each of these units get an 18 damage bonus against cavalry, which is still overwhelming in comparison to the +2 defense teuton paladins get, but it would have been interesting to see how that plays out, just as you did with halbs.
The most important part about the creation time bonus is the time to reasearch the paladin upgrade itself. bc Teutons can just place a few more stables and are fine with the numbers but having a faster paladin upgrade that takes ages anyway is hugely important.
The stable workrate boni are massive when it comes to the paladin tech research time. The frank UT in oarticular is sometimes quite impactful in teamgames.
Great video as always, mate. I think I noticed one of the May-hem Easter eggs, so I thought that this would be a good spot to put it up for discussion. I think the "Crown" hint refers to king of the hill game mode now functioning like the mode in Age of Mythology, as controlling the central monument now grants a trickle of resources, like the vault. Any thoughts, anyone?
Hey Spirit. Since you're making these unit comparison videos: which one has the best scorpions: ethiopians or khmer?
I am wondering about the relation between HP bonus / Attack bonus / Armor bonus . Which one actually the best overall ?
Straight up vs other civs your assesment is accurate. I feel though that not including monks for supporting units as an option when talking about army compisition the fact they lack husbandry also means that monks have a better chance of staying in range while their paladins soak up damage, you pair that with some halbs for cav and siege rams to soak up arrows that seems to me like a pretty hard army to counter.
What about new elite boyars? They perform very similarly, both having higher melee armor and slower overall speed. Which is stronger or better?
Hello Spirit! Nice vid, as always! Just to let you know you should pronounce the "s" at the end of "Fleur de Lys". Cheers
I think it's also important to consider the strength of Teuton monks in the Teuton vs Lithuanian comparison. Considering the stength and viability of Teuton monks, there would be a fairly even chance for either side to end up with 3 relics (spawning bias may play the biggest role in determining this). With that in mind, iit would be very unlikely for the Lithuanian player to end up with 4 relics, unless that player already had considerable map control, or was already winning in the first place.
will all the new civs and bonuses a comparison of the militia line would be interestiing. Specially considering m@a rush and lategame champions or two-handed swordsman for some civs
bu adamın işinin bu olması. seviyoruz seni hacı. by the way your accent always reminds me T. J. Miller from deadpool.
my question is: What to research first? Bloodlines or the 1st Amorupgrade?
In my experience playing years ago, they are a death ball unit that goes along side rams with Teutonic knights in them. Lets see if that holds up.
Spirit of the law can you make a video about the longboats vs other ships and buildings?
Whats the background song at the beginning?
Does the relic bonus work if teammates have the relics?
You should make a Third Wonder Video which you could review the new civs wonders and the changed wonders for the Britons and Magyars and maybe other civs that I didn't know had there wonders changed.
I have another question, why does "la fleur de lis" translate to "lou flour d lee" ?
This channel is great. I don't even play AoE2, I just like numbers :)
Hey spirit, how does they handle against full upgraded Elite konnik?
Teutons are my new favorite faction because they are surprisingly good in post imp trash fights due to their +2 armor for Halbs making them very good in halb on halbs since halberdiers have a low attack stat.
they also get elite skirms against any reminaing archers on the map.
Great video
Can you analyse whether Condottiero is a good counter to the Huskarl or not? Or how Italians should counter late game Goths.
Can you do a video explaining which civilization has the best sports car? Are the cars bullets affected by the Portuguese tech that makes gunpowder units have ballistics?
How do they stack up to Boyars?
Teuton paladin against imperial camel? does it do better than franks or Litu paladins?
Does it make it better against camel civs?
Spirit doesnt put a lot of jokes in his videos ... but when he does, 0:32
What I want to know is how do teutonic halberdiers stack up to to others, I guess their champions as well.
ב"ה
Can a teutonic Halberdier survive more hits from common late game cavalry such as paladins, tarkans, hussar, elephants and similar options?
6:40 that Teutonic Knight taking the massive group of halberdiers like a champ
Poor guy...
Hey Mr Law. Could you please tell us which civ has the best condos?
The spanish with their faster building bonus and more income from trade
A couple of things: A - I just noticed the buggy/invisible farm the villager is working at 7:15
B - Wouldn't you say that faster creation times are competed to an degree by the great wood economy the toutons have? Which could allow them to create more stables?
0:45 That is such an aoe pun 😆😆
Bravo ! Do you have installed the enhanced graphism?
New player here interested in comparisons for different rushes, such as which is the most cost effective rush, how many units is optimal for each rush , which civs are best for which rushes... I suppose it's really situational set of questions but my archer rush for hard bots just isn't cutting it for hardest bots and I think it might be to do with choices on military size and my economy.
Also interested in working out the weirdness of the Cumans, is a feudal TC worth it economically? Still wondering whether feudal battering rams is ever a good idea?
With blast furnace being removed for Lithuanians, they are now second and tied for first only if they have all four relics
Hey spirit, can you do a video about the mechanics of unit conversion?
look at this videos, he has 5 videos already
I was not expecting the teutonic knight pun lmao
What are the "other teutonic knights"?
I would also argue, that the 12 more hp of the Franks help them more against siege units like onagers or cannons.
But as a player who enjoyed playing the Teutons since way back of Age of Kings, I am very happy to see really shine now. ^^
can you do another Teutons Overview for de?
I always saw creation time bonus (of non-castle units) as a wood saving bonus than actually relevant to the units themselves. Especially in the late game its generally just a macro mistake to have built too few production buildings rather than a matter of creation speed.
Have Teutonic scouts finally surpassed Korean Hussars and Viking light cav?
I have never once played AoE2, any version, but for some reason I really like these videos. Am I the only one in that category?
Hey mister spirit, happens that Hera on one of his videos coaching someone says that hand cart should be researched at 70 vills aprox, and then i since i saw your hand cart video pointed that 43 is perfect as the guy did, but then someone says that you missed how does it affect the army production at that point and that would be pretty interesting to see on the future :D
Hey Law, spirit of the guys here
Whenever I find the last three goats on the map I scout with them for a second and send them to the nearest corner of the map.
With all those new top tier paladins, Franks should have access to bloodlines.
Hey Spirit, How about a video on Outposts?
I had to stop the video just to say how beautiful was to use the pun with The Rock and the "Undisputed Paladins"
what about Leitis? they ignore armor and with relic buff they could win, no?
...but how are their cavaliers? If I learned something, it's that the paladin upgrade is not worth the investment frequently. So, how do their cavaliers compare against other cavaliers?
Is this the time for frank to have a slightly better version of bloodlines in imperial age?
Well, if you factor in the Franks faster creation time, you also need to factor in the Teuton 40 % cheaper farms, which makes it easier to mass Paladins.
It would be kind of interesting to include Boyar somewhere here. I think they beat Teuton Paladins and they're so close to being like Paladins with the new 7 pierce armor.
i remember when u made paladin cost effectiveness upgrade vs cavaliers, u started with like 10 more cavaliers and needed 50 paladins to beat 60 cavaliers. Im just wondering how many paladins do you require to beat cavaliers when outnumbered by 1? i would assume 5vs6 paladins win
Thanks fo the video
Puns on point
teuton paladins resist conversion?
Can someone explain why Cumans have Paladins? I thought they were more of a light cav + cav archer civilization.
imagine cavalry civ without the best cavalry unit?
I was expecting you would show how they would fare against the genoese crossbowman
very debth info about aoe2.. great job man.. very detailed.. Appreciate it. Assuming you are actually correct.. which I will not dispute as i dont know .. lol.. it seems correct.
Is Teutonic knight + skirmisher a good combo?
@Ich Dien why nobody uses cavalry archers, teutons has that unit, not completely develop, but it´s works against archers too
