And these differences can make or break your chance at landing your dream fashion design job.
Which is why in this video, we’re going to go through how you - as a fashion design student - can create a fashion portfolio that looks more professional.
You’ll also learn how you can break into a new category…even if your student work (or past professional work) doesn’t have anything to do with that category.

ABOUT SEW HEIDI
Heya! Nice to meet you, I’m Heidi. I teach fashion designers like you the real world skills you actually need to learn to succeed in this cutthroat industry.
(You know, all the stuff you don’t learn at fashion school.)
I’ve worked as a contract designer for over a decade and run SuccessfulFashionDesigner.com. I’ve been able to make a healthy living doing work I love in fashion.
But I got started just like you, one step at a time. It began with some embarrassing hand sewn dresses and fashion sketches that would make a 3-year-old’s artwork look like a masterpiece.
Then, things changed. I learned how design was done on a large scale. I learned how to get things into production. And I learned all the skills I wish I knew when I was first starting out.
Now, I dedicate most of my time teaching you all of that. This content is hard to find anywhere else (because in fashion, people keep secrets), so I decided to create it...and give most of it away for free.

Hi Heidi! I am an international apparel production major in California. I just wanted to say THANK YOU so much for these videos, especially ones like this! In my first couple of years at university, I watched a ton of your videos to gain as much knowledge about this industry as I could so that I would be able to land internships/jobs moving forward. I am in my last semester at university and your advice has shaped my career so much. I've had two design and merchandising internships, one in London doing modular apparel and, recently, one at a major international activewear brand based in California. I love your videos and look forward to seeing what you are doing next!
Can you show how a “material” portfolio should look like?
What if I do everything on the computer?
Thank you so much for this video!! So helpful and fun to watch!!
I can't believe that someone can actuallllllly be this helpful ....this supportive and telling all the secrets out there !!!!!!! THANK U SOOO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Heidi!!!!! I'm totally new to the fashion space . . . design is my hobby, but computers/AI/etc is my main skillset & job target. Turns out that your video was super helpful in conceptually putting together a "data/AI" portfolio for apparel industry [don't worry, AI is NOT going to replace designers, it'll just be a tool in their toolkit]. Everything you mentioned was spot-on and very relevant. THANKS for your well-explained overview of the designer hiring mgr POV. Loved it!! I hope your design student subscribers are successful!! Cheers!
First to like and first to comment 😬! I am a seasoned ( nice term for old) fashion designer and I wish I had known this stuff when I was young. I attended a famous Italian school and I’ve been wanting my money back ever since. Were talking graduated in 1994 😱. So in fashion years I am now officially a Dinosaur. When I started working I realized I knew nothing. Years forward I now find myself too old to be an assistant but with a resume that sucks to apply for a Director position. Even though I worked for a few internationally famous high end brands, holding a position as design director in one of them, I am only now learning Ai and PS. After I lost my last job in 2007 I decided to go back and study all those things I found out I didn’t learn in fashion school. As I mentioned earlier I am in the process of learning Ai and PS with the purpose of creating a whole new portfolio and hopefully land a job. I want to thank you Heidi for sharing your knowledge and giving those free tutorials. What you do is amazing and I really hope that younger designers appreciate the value of what you are sharing. Even “Dinosaurs” like me can learn a lot from you. I just hope it’s not too late for me ☹️. Bless you! 💖
Hi Markus - wow, so awesome to hear from you and hear your story!!! Really glad you're digging in and taking every opportunity to learn this stuff, your determination and dedication is clear, I am sure you will go far!! Keep me posted on your journey and keep kicking major a$$!! You got this!!!👊

You’re so welcome!
Very smart information. I love the way you "cut through all the fat" and present raw advice that, when followed leads to, success.
Woot! No small talk, let's just get to the meat of it!
@@SewHeidi yes, I love it that way... straightforward
Thanks
You're welcome Chand - I'd love to know what was your favorite part? What did you learn!? Please share!
Hi Heidi, thank you for making a video on this topic. It is really very helpful. Can you please explain about what you actually mean by self driven projects? Many thanks.
Of course! A self directed or self driven project is one that you do on your own. So, you come up with a color palette, the designs, and maybe even some sample tech packs for a "self directed" collection. You don't have to manufacture or produce it, but creating a "mock" collection for a brand you admire (or want to work for!) is a great way to show them that you are a good match. Hope that helps :)
Thank you. Thank you very much Heidi. Very helpful for me as I am trying to get back to work after a career break. Have a great weekend!
@SewHeidi we need a portfolio review from you, please ❤
Hi Heidi ,
You actually suggest the right things at right time. After doing masters in textiles and clothing and having very few years of work experience in manufacturing industry I had a break in my career bcoz of personal reasons. After coming to the USA I started going to a fashion school to revive my knowledge and experience. Almost in my last semester and want to make the best portfolio. This tutorial is amazing, you have cleared all those doubts I wanted to discuss with my preffessor after the semester opens 😍. I can’t thank you for all your wonderful help.
The best take away is designing stuff that’s commercial and not (always) conceptual and creating self driven projects 👍 I love you for your best suggestions 😍
So glad this is helpful for you Uma! And commercial projects will really SHOW the brand you get them!! You got this!
How much one should charge for making fashion portfolio for students or job seekers??
Hi Heidi! Thanks for this video!
Glad you enjoyed! While I appreciate your questions, I don't have the capacity to answer all the ones I get ;( Which is why I created www.FashionIndustryFriends.com (check it out to get help in your fashion career)!
@@SewHeidi Thank you
Okay, question: how can you design a commercial brand without copying the brand you would like to work for?
Really helpful loved your advises 💓but as a 6 years experienced professional designer, I need some advices about portfolio, pls help
