    ABOUT SEW HEIDI
Heya! Nice to meet you, I’m Heidi. I teach fashion designers like you the real world skills you actually need to learn to succeed in this cutthroat industry.
(You know, all the stuff you don’t learn at fashion school.)
I’ve worked as a contract designer for over a decade and run SuccessfulFashionDesigner.com. I’ve been able to make a healthy living doing work I love in fashion.
But I got started just like you, one step at a time. It began with some embarrassing hand sewn dresses and fashion sketches that would make a 3-year-old’s artwork look like a masterpiece.
Then, things changed. I learned how design was done on a large scale. I learned how to get things into production. And I learned all the skills I wish I knew when I was first starting out.
Now, I dedicate most of my time teaching you all of that. This content is hard to find anywhere else (because in fashion, people keep secrets), so I decided to create it...and give most of it away for free.

As an intern at one famous company I’ve asked for more assignments, I showed my intentions to learn, I showed my motivation and that exactly scared other workers- they were afraid of competition and being replaced very soon. So they told me to slow down and come one day a week instead of five days a week!! ( The place can’t afford too many workers b/c they moved to expensive location and rent went three time higher.) Once I brought a cake just to show them my appreciation and senior sewer told me - to never ever do that thing again!! So I got a life lesson - to sit quietly, look ugly and maybe I would get a chance!! Joking of course but.... Maybe tip like “do more as an intern” would work better in a big company with hundreds or even thousands employee.

Great video! As someone currently in a fashion internship, always check your employment contract or ask before posting anything online! Most times you can't do this until the product launches as you've signed a confidentiality agreement. And it's still risky to upload any images to your website even if they aren't linked to the home page. I previously worked at a packing design agency, and a designer got fired and the company lost a major client over this.
Sending in an email or showing in person seem safer, though I'd personally still be wary of showing to a direct competitor. You want the company interviewing you to trust you'll keep their designs confidential as well! So I'm trying to rework skills and designs from my internship into side projects, changing things enough so it's "my work."
So happy to have this series, I just got concerned about the comment about using work from internships!

Hi Robin - yes, of course this is always a grey area! I've talked more about when it's ok / not ok to use designs in your portfolio (and how to go about getting permission!) in my portfolio book (successfulfashiondesigner.com/fashion-portfolio/) but yes, sometimes you have to be cautious. Sometimes you can get creative like you are by reworking the designs, waiting until they're available in the market, or showing small portions that don't give things away but still show your work.
Good luck and glad you're enjoying the series!

This video needs to be shown in schools.
After 2 years of applying for design jobs and 1 unpaid internship, I gave up. I'm completely done with the design side of the industry unless it's freelance work. I'm only focusing on the production and business side. Yea experience is still required, but I think with my business degree and taking specific fashion related courses without having to applying for another degree program, will get me through the door.

What they're teaching in schools is pretty sad these days...I've actually had students tell me their teachers have shown MY UA-cam videos b/c the teacher doesn't know how to teach something...eeek!
Anyway...production is a really fun space to be in - personally I think it's fun and challenging and can be just as awesome as design :) Good luck!

My college literally makes us put our school work all together in our portfolio, now i get the gist and start working on my own portfolio. This helped me a lot, I'm graduating in 4 months and I need to land a job.

How can one figure out what strengths/advantages you can add to a company? I have skills, but I don't know how to translate that into giving a potential employer something great.

    Hi Heidi,
Actually, I know how to customize the portfolio book and cover letter. But how to customize resume while the context is almost the same?

Hi Heidi, really quick, I'm 30, in my 7th semester at FIT but I've been working in fashion for 10 years (I did life a little backwards). I recently wrote about my experience as a gay latino in the fashion industry--I would love it if you would read it and tell me what you think.
