In this video, I review and critique a viewer's online fashion design portfolio, with his permission, of course. I discuss what's great, what's ok, what I think needs improvement. Of course these are all just suggestions, not mandates. I hope every designer learns a few tips and tricks on how to make their own portfolios better.

Zoe Hong thank you so much for this!!! Your critique is everything to me and it has definitely given me a new perspective on what people are looking for in the industry and what I gots to do to better prepare myself! Definitely views are a lot different here in Texas with not just what people are accustomed to, but with what we’re taught in design school. But now I know the things to better improve myself on and it’ll only make me a better designer in the future!

First off, congrats Aaron on all the beautiful work. You clearly have an aesthetic that you understand and know how to use. Zoe your critique was through and very informative. I agreed with everything you said and found myself picking up on somethings before you mentioned them. Which is a credit to you because I've learned so much from watching your channel and doing outside research. I can't wait to start working on mine.
On another note, was I the only one laughing when she mentioned his aesthetic not being very Texas friendly? I was waiting for Zoe to say something not only because of the editorial quality but the dark and pagan themes, and you know how those Texans are about their religion. 😂😂😂😂

I only recently found your channel, but the more I learn from you the more I realize that I'm not a designer but rather a seamstress. And everyday I think I'm becoming more and more okay with the fact that I don't have Fashion Design "chops", and I just enjoy the construction of a garment. Fantastic critique Zoe Hong! And like the designer who you critiqued first when you were doing the new designer showcase told you "you critiqued my line and I don't feel like jumping out the window" who was key on you becoming a teacher. All the things you pointed out were spot on, everyone can learn so much from the courage from Aaron Carmona who is a designer. Thanks for all you teach and share in your wonderful channel!
I really enjoyed seeing Aaron's work he has beautiful taste, especially his evening dresses. I also liked how honest you were. You can really teach people how to critique honestly without offending. I am not in the clothing industry - just a beginner sewer looking at ideas. Thank you for excellent tips and you are providing practical career advice that applies to every industry, in terms of research into who is hiring. I will be watching many more of your videos.

A very punctual and hands-on critique. I think that Aaron is on the average, because he has a clear vision or particular style, but his portfolio is like in between: not too editorial and not too commercial, neither superficial or super-skilled. Maybe, it 's just how you convey your ideas and, above all, have a deep insight about the industry. Maybe, he could be more keen on couture, instead of industrial production. The fact is that outside there a lot of talented and experienced people and it's very hard to stand out and understand what recruiters are looking for, because it's a very competitive and never-stop-learning field.
Zoe, I've been binging your videos since I discovered you, yesterday. I'm learning so much and I thank you for sharing your info! I looked at Aaron's portfolio, and see that he applied your notes. Thank you, Aaron, for being brave enough to publicly subject your work for critique. Interesting side note: he has a design for the Calgary Stampeders cheer squad - I live near Calgary and I've been to some of their games.
This was so helpful to me, I will need to go back in and edit my school portfolio. I am not applying for a job but this information applies a lot to my college application. The part that especially helped was about being dismissive of your own abilities and knowledge. I tend to do that and tell people that I'm not the best. I want to change it. Thank you Zoe

Way to go Aaron! Congratulations on some awesome work, and putting it out there for critique. I thought some of the beautiful texture or prints from The Owl, could be incorporated into the ready to wear. That being said, Zoe, your critique was so insightful and thorough. Im about to graduate fashion school this semester and Im glad I stumbled upon your channel. Your critiques on portfolios are very informative and will surely help me when I apply work. Our instructor for our portfolio class never said or discussed shit like this at all, we just pay models, photographers and editors for our portfolio which is really disappointing because Im not learning anything at all. It's basically all about running the money and relying on other people instead of teaching us first the basics and how to go about our portfolio. Wish you were my instructor it would be a fulfilling class tbh.

I was an architecture student and indeed mood boards or in our case concept board is important in the design process and the attention to detail is everything.

I remember seeing his work at the school's fashion show. When I was watching this I was wondering why his designs seemed familiar, and then I saw he went to the same school as I did. What a small world and I wish I got to know him. I really like his sketches/illustrations.

This series is really good. Props to Aaron for sharing his work and you for the great critique. I would like to ask a few questions that poped during the duration of the video. I as well have an online portfolio, but haven't included the flat sketches at all, because of the fact that they include a lot of information about the construction of my clothing and I am afraid of copies. Do you think this is wrong and that I should include them? Moreover, would it be good to have sketchbook images inside?
I wouldn't worry that much about copiers unless your site is well known and you get a lot of traffic, but if you're really really stressed out, you can make your portfolio password protected and give the password out to people you send job applications to. As for sketchbook images, if they're relevant to the project, yes, include them, showing process is good but make sure you carefully edit down to your very best.

Those dark vibes could definitely work in places like Berlin/Germany, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic. I see potential for movie costume design too.
something that helps a lot about the reception of the public migth be a tendences moodboards, to define some siluettes and stuff to be a liitle gided by, we use that in my college, a liitle moodboard of tendences and target, as you say we designers tend to be more visual so that can help a lot

Great video, thank you Zoe, I learned so much! Aaron, I really admired your portfolio! Love your dark aesthetic. I don't know nearly enough to provide useful feedback on your designs apart from "I like them" ;) but one thing I noticed just on the screenshots were several spelling mistakes (decEIver) and grammar stuff (a shortened sentence "being interested in X" needs to relate to the subject of the main sentence, in this case "this collection" - no, it's you who are interested in it; etc). If you include a lot of text in your website, as Zoe said, then it might be a good idea to have a professional copyreader proof-read it. These sort of mistakes can look unprofessional (of course, I work as an editor, so I would tend to notice more of those than the average reader). Hope this helps!

Hey Zoe! If I have a Project I worked really hard on and already did the Prototypes (The fotoshoot) all of the handsewing, the flats, the Sketches, the Illustrations (it's Kind of a finished Project) but I am not happy with the way it turned out can I still put it in my Portfolio and say what I learned during it even though it's not my asthetic and I'm not proud of the way it turned out? Is it better to not Show it at all or to say that I stand behind it 100%?
Yes, I would, and I would point out what you learned so you show your growth. However, I wouldn't put it as the first thing people see. The first couple of things should be your best foot forward. If you can, try to add a few corrections. Maybe 1 beautiful new flat, 1 illustration, 1 stitch sample to show how much you've improved. Showing progress is always impressive. Good luck!

Do you think it would be much more helpful and easier if those sketches and drawings were labelled tho? Like as a designer we annotate what we are trying to show in those illustrations bc thats what my fashion teacher always told me not to miss out

Hey Zoe，I really appreciate all tutorials and critique videos you made. They are so helpful to me cuz I'm learning fashion design by myself now. May I ask you a question about fashion design portfolio for college application？I am better at direct garment making instead of making a moodboard，design process on paper，then illustration for a collection. I think I can't “make” complete steps on well organized paper after I constructed a piece of garment. Is that okay if I just put my sketchbook and final garment looks together as a fashion design project for application？Or should I just follow rules to restart a path like how a normal fashion portfolio being made？Thank you！
For college applications, find out the individual college’s prerequisities for portfolios.
Zoe Hong Thank you for replying！ Unfortunately，they don't have specific requirement for portfolio but just state that they like to see variety and breadth in the work I submit. And I know there were some applicants got accepted without professional process. However I'm not sure if it will be “appropriate” enough to do the same thing.

Digital work is great, most importantly doing flats in Adobe Illustrator. Digital skills are very important.

For designers, sketches are mainly to make your portfolio look pretty. You won't be illustrating much in a design job. The flats are key.

Do your fabric swatches always have to be the exact color as your sketches or color harmony or is just to show texture?
It's better if it's the right color. Wrong color swatches is better than no swatches, though.

No, just the flat. But if the back of one of your designs is very dramatic and cool, it can look really nice in your portfolio if you include it.

I love this whole video but I have a question about moodboards. Do they usually look like that? Since I started college for fashion design I went through pinterest and google just scrolling down the moodboards being very confused. My proffesor is really hardcore about moodboards, she wants them to be perfect and yea I understand that but I noticed that usually moodboards are different than what we do. I watched couple of videos on yt and I noticed some are not pieced together completely. And some are just pictures put next to each other. I never really asked anyone and Iam curious. Does everyone make moodboards like that?
Now I realised I dont even know if yr channel had a video on moodboards or have I watched it and forgot. If that was the case... then... oh well

I do have a video on mood boards. Check the Fashion Design Process playlist. People have different opinions on how a mood board should look, how messy, how clean, how many images. I mainly want them to clearly show the collection inspiration.
Angela a - I’m feeling you. My design teachers are VERY specific about our moodboards, to the point of ridiculousness.
There has to be between 10-12 images exactly, no more than two images of fashion/styling, the rest a balanced range of imagery including architecture, patterns/prints, nature, artworks, interior design. All colours to be cohesive and perfectly balanced. The palettes have 6-7 colours. Images to be sized based on their relevance and perfectly arranged, overlapping or blending into each other. And the whole concept has to be derived from a current forecast theme from the fm books after extensive research.
Once the digital version was perfect it also had to be reproduced physically on colour coordinated a2 matting board, with prominent images raised on foam board and perfectly matching fabric samples (which are impossible to find). It’s a bit extreme I think.
I really like some moodboards I see where the images are arranged in a haphazard way with lots of white space, but that is a big no-no. 😩
Do you think you could ever look at Kim Kardashian’s mood board and critique it? I’ve seen a couple on the show. I wonder what you might think.
