- In this one we finally, after 4 days of mowing, get to bale and wrap our forage rye. we also get to finally see how many bales our forage rye actually yields. Ill let you in on a secret...its a LOT!

I’m a farmer on 2500 acres in Australia got beef cattle and my son and my daughter have been watching you for ages and they showed me your channel the other day and now we sit down every time you post and it’s like a family thing my dad my wife we all sit down after the day and watch your videos and we can relate so much. I just want to say thank you because I was struggling to find the balance between being a father and a farmer and the time to spend time with my kids and get jobs done but now I’m being great at both. That sounds really bad for a dad to say but keep up the great work.
Imagine if it was back when all we had was small squares wouldn't they be coming out the back thick and fast
@@bradleamon4466 That's for sure, I used to make 25,000 small square bales of hay and 30,000 of straw back in the 1970's for ourselves. Tough going but we had good full time staff and we cut 700 acres of silage aswell. We were milking 500 cows at the time. Unfortunately BSE wiped us out in the early 90's and never got back in.
You are lucky there we have only just got some silage drilled today
Got good grass everywhere though but have had tractor issues and waiting for contractor to arrive
Moisture seems good and temp is good but gamble on rain now
About u asking about our balers: My krone Kombipack 1500V sometimes catches the net on the rotor, so ur not the only one where the baler does wierd stuff sometimes

Just take a early corn variety, i also wanna plant after chopping barley, since fodder is short this year.

Funny there is a lot of rye grown round us this year never seen it before. I assume it is going to an AD plant, there are a few in the area ( another barmy idea burning tons of diesel to cart forage to make gas to generate electric 🤷♂️)
Used to be a Service agent for Krone back in my agri days in Ireland. The Comprima was an awesome bit of kit but expensive. Their baler wrapper was a big hit.

Boys still drilling maize around us Marlborough/Swindon area (27th May). Still not too late for spring barley especially in those wetter fields, there’s good moisture 2/3 inches down so make the most of it I’d say 👌
Yeh definitely doable. Think we either need more man power or better preparation for next time.
Was curious for this video for days! Maybe use rye myself to in the future
Mix some vetch in there, and cut when the rye is in boot stage (if possible). The protein levels reach their peak during boot stage, and every day you wait into heading stage drops.
Mother Nature doesn’t always cooperate with such a tight cutting window, though.
It’s a huge yielder. We might put vetch in this year but waiting for analysis before making our mind up what we do.

Great video! We have got about 60 acres of this to do but ours has vetch in it as well so might make it harder to mow. Just waiting for the IOM TT races to finish because the course is between us and the fields. Do the bales go in a wagon or just put in front of the cows?
Just wondering why you didn’t make a larger bale , as I believe you can make up to a 6ft bale (like the lads from Hay team ) with them Mchale belt balers . Would have been considerably less bales. Could you have dropped every other knife out the baler to aid it chopping?
Really interesting and interested in growing some myself.
As solid as those bales are, I’d guess handling would get pretty difficult if they sized it up to 6’.

Originally was going to put maize in, then thought about kale as I was a little late for maize but it was so dry I was worried the kale wouldn’t germinate (in hind sight it probably would have done with the rain we’ve had) although now considering the option of following it with a herbal ley.
We take half the knives out for small grains on a McHale 660. It's hard to get them to eat it otherwise
We usually run with half the knives but even then the baler wouldn’t take it. Gonna have to make sure there’s good blades in the bale shredder this winter.

Just works better for us with our sheds and staff to use bales.
We do about 600 acres of rye a year to use for straw so i totally understand the amount of bales that come off it lol

Fodder Beet next? + Trial a strip of sweed/turnip/kale blend with a nutritional seed dressing to outgrow flea beetle
Could have done! Or a forage crop like kale. There is a lot of options if I pull my finger out any other year 😂
Will you grind theese forage Rye bales to feed them? I ask, thinking the cows would waste it if left in one huge legnth(6ft in places it looked as you mowed)

Imagine the amount of forage per acre if you had getting the maze in afterwards, I know a lot off biomass plants do it but as feed you would need to buy another 50 head of cattle to use it. Will it go through a chopper type feeder or feeder wagon when it’s time to use ??
Yeh that’s was my original though process. You could really make that land work hard for you. Seems to go through the chopper well but I’m gonna put new knives in for the winter. 👍
@@baldysfarm got to make the land work hard for you now, an average of £10,000 per acre the more you can get out of it the better, it’s like getting half price feed if you look at it that way 👍🏻

Why not give it a go. It’s not easy and there’s not a lot of money in it but it’s a fantastic life to live.

How about spring barley, if it grows well combine, if it's late mow and bale, or maize and graze cows on it, they do it in America, there's some vids on you tube
Could have done but I had a mate with my spring barley this year so I think my confidence in it was pretty low 🙈
Does forage rye grow back or does it die off when cut? Any chance of a second cut?
One cut crop. Should been cut right before the heads shoots it's when the food quality is at the highest :)
@@Simon9kyep, that is called the “boot” stage.
Well it is a one crop wonder however… some did grow back and I have grazed my cows on it. Stabilisers are going over some now and they are eating it really well.
Well atleast you may make it home for Christmas after stacking that lot 😂

The reason the net wraps around the roller is because the back door isnt pressurised, it happens to ours if you don’t do it

Bales not chopped,goin to be a nightmare
Tried with half the knives and it wouldn’t have it. Put some through the bales shredder and it’s fed quite well. Cows will eat it fine I think.
That's an impressive crop, but, it's going to be a nightmare to feed! Unchopped grass silage bales are a nightmare, this will be infinitely worse given the lenght of stem.
Do u even farm if you do your a bad one the work fine

Yes I have fed silage Chloe’s and non chopped to cows thank you for a pretty much instant reply
Depends how you feed them, chopped bales are a pain in the arse for me because they fall apart easily, not what I want
@@glenkoopman7347 Fair enough. But, if feeding along a barrier in a slatted shed, cattle will pull a lot of feed onto the slats.
