In this episode of Habs Daily News, Coach discusses whether Joshua Roy is ready to be a top-six forward for the Canadiens. After a stellar season with the Laval Rocket, Roy got called up by the Canadiens and impressed by playing most of his time on the second line.
With a vacancy alongside Dach and Newhook, Roy has the potential to fill that spot effectively.
Coach delves into Roy's chances of securing a top-six role, backed by analytical stats from his 23 games last season and a detailed scouting report.

Hey Coach, I prefer your true voice rather than this AI version. Your accent has a lot of character. I understand that maybe you will get more views this way but I will miss hearing you say “you have greatness inside of you” in your unique authentic manner.
I enjoy your videos, regardless. All the best.
Hi Coach, I usually agree with you wholeheartedly, but Roy as a top 6 is in my opinion a bit of a stretch…I think he will be a solid 3rd line winger and 2nd power play unit. But I really hope you are right👍
@@rogerdelaney8847 Roger in this line up I think he is top 9 in two years I think he is going to be third line… Thanks for your comment
Roy is a solid top 6.
He’s 100% top-6 talent. Absolument!
The "ROY!" cut ins are making me laugh so bad lol, but jokes aside, gotta be excited about the kid
I think Roy is better than most people think. Any question about whether he plays on the 2nd or 3rd line hinges on who else the Habs have in the lineup. Slaf, Caufield, Suzuki, Dach, Newhook, Roy makes sense. But what happens when Ivan puts his skates on?
@@dougiesherwin9591 Good point but if Roy plays on your third line that’s give you a great roster. Well balanced 3 lines with Roy Beck Newhook we don’t forget Hage
Hi Coach, On his stats alone in the NHL all be it a small sample is definitely not a top 6 forward. Let's see if he has a break out year coming up. He was not given a lot of ice time last year. I guess we will see. I hope he does well. Now it's up to him to prove it.
If we're talking about right now at this instant then NO, Joshua Roy is not a top 6, not even on a bottom 8 team.
However, I think it would be the right decision to play him a full season with the Habs in 2024-25.
There's a chance he makes the roster since there's not much room left in Laval and Joshua Roy is first in line of the forwards.
He needs to grow with the core if he wants to be a part of it.
If they're keeping Harvey-Pinard, there's no reason not to keep Joshua Roy.
They're about the same level but Pinard is 25 and Roy 20.
Heineman is also on that same level but only one of Heineman or Roy can make the roster unless they trade a forward.
There's literally no room..
SlafCaufield
RoyGally
ArmiaAnderson
H-PinardDvorak
MathesonMailloux
GuhleSavard
XhekajBarron
scratched: Struble, Harris, Pezzetta
Meanwhile, Kent Hughes signed a bunch of players for 1 year and most of them are just plasters/patches.
I am not even sure there's going to be room for Beck in Laval.
There's no room for Mesar either, and I think they told him and so he requested a trade.
How much ice time will Farrell, Kidney and Xhekaj have with all the 26yo+ players on the team?
This is ridiculous, we don't have room for Mesar, Beck, Kapanen and Engstrom.
-Gignac (C), 26yo, AHL 1st liner, 1 year left on contract, Quebecois
-Dauphin (C), 29yo, AHL 1st liner, signed 1 year contract, Quebecois

Absolutely amazing comment, my friend. Well done. I appreciate it. Great explanation of the Habs pipeline and everything else. Thanks again!
I see him in a third line with Beck and Newhook in a couple years
Roy has similar nhl ppg as Caufield/Suzuki at their first season (and same age) with limited ice time, been dominant at every level, I see him top 6 next season and keeping improving. If we get another top 6 from trade or if we get demidov in 2025-2026 I see newhook going down to third but not Roy.
I agree with Roy in the top 6 this season, but only as a placeholder until Demidov arrives
This assessment is overly optimistic. Let's be honest here, on a cup contending team he is a third and maybe fourth line player. His skating is poor and he looked lost a lot last year.
While getting good minutes on the second line he hardly produced any offense. Even his production on the top line in Laval wasn't that great. In my opinion, he needs heavy minutes in Laval and let him develop to the player we all hope he can be. Remember he is very young still.
Habs need a topline centr.
They have Nick Suzuki. Give him two more years to refine his defensive skills and learn how to handle the best opponents, and he will excel. Mastering all aspects of the game takes time. Thanks for your comment!
yes
I don’t think Newhook or Roy will be too 6 once Demidov and a guy like Mcgroarty/ Necas is traded for! They will form a great 3rd line imo!
Absolutely Mike you are right about it. I feel the same way. Thanks for your comment
Roy will play on the second trio with Dach and Newhook. It is written in the sky. When Demidov and Hage will join the team he will slip to the third line.
what abt newhook?
Ideally Kent will soon go get a 2nd liner to play with Dach and Roy. Newhook is an awesome 3rd line centre with speed, IQ and skills. Ehlers would be awesome for the end of his contract.
@@JeanJames-ff3wx Newhook can be a great winger, as well as Dach
@@Ben-hi5zm Newhook and Dach can both be great wingers
@@zblip22 that means third line hage with roy prob with kapenen nice on fourth florian jack eye with beck and farrel
His junior career showed he can be a top 6. Maybe he just needs a shot
Can we trade Some smaller players already like RHP please
Who’s going to take players like rhp and gally. Evans is the only one that has some value and at most, can get us a 5th
I say third line with Beck as center.
I think he isnt a top 6. A top 6 player is a guy who can play on line 2 and line 1. I dont think Roy can play on the first line. I see more as a middle 6er. But a guy who primarly starts on the 2nd line. His peak could be a 30 goal pace 50 point guy i think with solid all around play.
Im not trying to be rude, but your reading a report. I can literally visualize your eyes going side to side with every word lol.
He trained an AI voice to sound like him. You can tell when the script called for the name “Roy”, Coach Frenchy overdubbed his pronunciation instead of the AI saying it the anglicized way.
Top 6 only by default or injuries.
When Hughes acquires a scoring forward, and he will, Roy gets knocked down the lineup and gets to play 3rd or 4th line minutes.
Can he kill penalties, provide forecheck energy or be returned to Laval for seasoning?
Note the biggest proportion of his 13 goals in Laval came early in the season then not much.
Playing 12 minutes per game and scoring 4 goals and nine points is hardly a top 6 sniper!
The new NHL is driven by speed and natural skating ability, attributes Roy is not blessed with.
Solid third? Maube
He reminds me of Drouin.
He needs to be more macho. More angry and have a big ego.
Not even close on a contender.
