Why are gambling ads allowed on TV? We don't allow cigarette ads nor cannabis ads. Gambling can, has and will ruin the lives of people. The "industry" will continue to flourish without sports promotion but gambling can, has and will injure the integrity of sports.

My issue with the Marek firing is Serevalli did this to a much bigger extent when he leaked all the kraken picks when they entered the league and faced no repercussions, and I feel like Marek adds much more to the nhl from a personality side, then Serevalli does from a reporting side

Agreed. Marek is smart guy who is engaging in an almost unique way. The 32 Thoughts podcast won't be the same about him, and if SN makes any more "Hey Burkie" animations, they certainly won't be the same without him. Serevalli doesn't do anything that Bob McKenzie didn't do better, or that Friedman himself doesn't do better.

Maybe, but Canucks fans hate Serevalli not because of that stuff but because he didn't kiss the ring and say the Canucks were the greatest team ever constructed. As a Canucks fan, I want my journalists to be impartial and if they think there are flaws in the lineup to say so. That's the only way positive change happens. When everyone admits there needs to be improvement. And why a guy from Ohio would favour a team from Alberta over a team from BC is beyond me. That's a new one. Maybe he likes their winters? West Edmonton Mall? I can't keep up with the lack of logic. The Serevalli haters would have thrown a fit if they knew a guy named Neil MacRae. He made Don Cherry look like Mother Teresa. But looking back, he was right.

My grandfather worked in media in Detroit from the 1950’s to the late 1990’s. He had a casual working relationship with Howe, Yzerman, Barry Sanders… he also interviewed Gretzky and Jordan whenever they were in town.
He passed away earlier this year and was an avid listener of 32 Thoughts and was a big fan of Marek. After he passed, I reached out to the podcast to thank them and let them know that he was a huge fan. Shortly after, Jeff reached out to me personally to give his condolences and we had a half hour conversation about my grandfathers life and his work.
Jeff is a very busy guy and didn’t have to do that, but he did. He’ll forever be a stand-up guy in my book. I’m excited for what he’ll do next now that he’s not confined by the shackles of Sportsnet.

Marek leaked the picks out to an outsider. If he himself leaked the pics i.e posted on his own twitter who was getting drafted, this would probably be a non issue. The issue is that he leaked the picks to a supposed friend that wasn't with Sportsnet. So he leaked confidential insider information for a competitor (and that competitor is a friend who runs a scouting page or something). Nothing Illegal happened (I think the Nevada gambling board just did their due diligence and questioned him and found nothing.) But leaking insider Sportsnet information to a competitor has to be a breach of contract. Love Marek and sux that he is gone, but it is 100% justifiable that Sportsnet let him go. Hope he gets another gig somewhere else. Loved 32 thoughts.
And as others pointed out; Frank Seravalli leaking the Seattle picks wouldn't get him in trouble; whoever leaked it to Seravalli would be the one getting in trouble if it was insider information (i.e sportsnet or ESPN)

Anyone who ever watched a football game knew the Giants were a better team, yet the Broncos were favored. Why? because Denver fans were bigger bettors than Giants fans. They were betting on the Broncos because that was their favorite team, ignoring the obvious facts. Of course, it ended up being an easy win for the Giants. Yet fans constantly think the odds are set on which teams is better. The odds are set according to what will bring in the most money.

the reason the picks are leaked to the broadcasting team is so they can be ready for once the pick is made to do things like send interviewers to the family, etc. a really good example of this was beckett senecke’s pick, because it’s not like he was a consensus pick, so they wouldn’t have just had a camera trained on him ready to go. it gives the broadcast team a chance to prepare for the moments directly following the pick.

The NHL lets TV et al know who's going to be picked so they can get cameras ready, videos ready, that kind of stuff. Not to put out who will get picked early so you can post it on social media. If Marek did nothing wrong he'll be fine.

I can understand the firing. The league bend over backward to give Sportsnet a lead time of probably just a couple of minutes to prepare for the next pick, and the guy waste it screwing around instead of actually preparing. Also if you thought the first round was too bloody long, that shit added half an hour at least, and you waste it texting the picks in advance to a buddy.

I think what people are forgetting about in this situation is that Marek is a TV host for the national broadcast of the NHL and those broadcasts sometimes need info given to them early to prepare for the news aka a draft pick. Meanwhile guys like saravelli, McKenzie and freidman are insiders that their entire job is around releasing info ASAP and don’t have direct connect to the league really with most of their info coming from the teams directly.

If GMs were leaking their picks to Merrick before the announcement, that should be their responsibility, not his.
Merrick is doing his job as a journalist by gathering and sharing information. He shouldn't need to consider the NHL's gambling regime when doing his job.
If he was leaking the information to one person only just so they can bet, that's a problem.
I think the NHL needs to hold the leakers accountable if they want to continue their little gambling charade. Gambling on the draft is a flakey thing to begin with and the NHL should rethink this.

I am perhaps a minority in the world of following Jeff Marek journalism.
Very much appreciate his all consuming passion for the sport of hockey. The comment a colleague once mentioned..as a young kid his mother dropped him off routinely to take in Hall of Fame memorabilia. It brought a smile to my face. That said…I often thought his take on things was kind of eccentric…and Elliotte the perfect foil. But I found it a little tedious and it obscured more straightforward conversation about the game.
So for me I am not surprised something went amiss for Marek. Hopeful he finds his way back..but not to 32 Thoughts..

Worse than ads for me are the odds spouted in the middle of the game, as though it's a natural part of coverage (which didn't exist for the vast majority of the sport's existence). "That's it for our second intermission report. Up next is puck drop, and the Stars are -200 to win in regulation." They treat it like it's some form of analysis, when it's not.

Shannon, I can shed some light on the reasoning behind the NHL releasing draft picks a few minutes before the official announcement to broadcasters is so the broadcasters can get the cameras aimed at the pick, and get their stats and graphics ready to go, which takes time to produce. However, if I were the NHL, I'd have broadcasters like Sportsnet and ESPN under an NDA to not release it before the official announcement. Sportsnet was probably under pressure due to Marek violating their NDA to fire him, or voluntarily chose to fire him or he chose to voluntarily resign to protect themselves from being sued or having their contrast with the NHL cancelled.

I think the only reason that Marek got the 3rd degree about this is because he was physically in Vegas when it happened. If he's in Nashville, or Los Angeles, or anywhere else this doesn't even become a story. But because it's in Vegas and the Nevada gaming commission gets involved because it's on their turf, Marek becomes the sacrifice that gets caught in the crosshairs. From his perspective, I could easily believe that this has been a thing that insiders would do during a typical draft and it was never thought of potentially being problematic if for no other reason that the NHL leaks information left and right seemingly about everything and nothing ever becomes of those. But, in Vegas with a gaming commission so close to anything involving gambling, and so much action taking place related to who gets drafted when, this happened.

But the fact sites allow gambling on draft picks where dozens of team personnel may know an outcome for minutes or days before it happens is asinine and any sports book is getting what’s coming to them. Shannon, I have never to this date had a gambling problem. But a short search on the internet reveals how a person can be immediately captured by gambling . I even felt the gambling lure in Vegas recently! It was so scary as we wasted hundreds of dollars playing craps and other games . It was immediately evident to me how easy it is to get hooked
I so respect how you do not promote gambling nor the bankruptcy it causes. While not a victim of gambling my parent struggled with alcohol. When I watch your competitors pushing Vodka sweet drinks with lemonade and now the latest video I saw was a hockey player pushing a new whiskey called JRNY
If you watch these alcohol pushers it seems to me they are already hooked on pink Whitney or JRNY

The NHL was clearly providing Sportsnet the picks ahead of time, because they were broadcasting the draft. SportsNet would need to know the picks ahead of time so they can have the names and stats show up as they're being announced, plus have the camera on the player as the pick is being announced. From there, the NHL and Sportsnet more than likely have an agreement saying that the information the NHL is giving them cannot be released until the pick is officially announced. Jeff provided those details before they were announced, and the NHL wasn't happy. Sportsnet knows that they were in the wrong, they know that they can't fight this, so they did the most obvious choice, which was to release Jeff. Now they can go back to the NHL, apologize and say it'll never happen again, we got rid of the leak.
