Classic car owners sometimes get too hung up with resto costs and present market price. Meanwhile 98+% of cars on the road were bought for far more than their present depreciated value, almost every other car on the road is "underwater" to a worse degree. Another way to think about "underwater" classic car ownership is they hold value MUCH better than the other 98% of cars on the road, as they're likely past the trough of their depreciation curve. If you're not in a rush and want to learn, doing the work yourself will take a lot longer, but will make classic car ownership comparatively inexpensive.
My family have always owned classic ,bikes ,cars, vans whatever and like Adam has found out it"s a bottomless pit if you want a minter and and superfussy with something in mild metal that has suffered the weather and salt for many years . Lots of ways of saving money - don"t rush into buying the first cars that might come along ,take your time buying the right car ,buying the correct parts and get to know local experts ,trimmers ,painters and any petrolhead who you know locally . Some courses at night school ,if your really keen to stay with classics may help ?. My own 70s M.G.b is about 90 % original ,bought off a family that loved and cherished it and gets loads of admirers very time I go out . Never been welded ,original wings , sills etc and in White , every bill with the car with 70,000 + on the clock . When I bought it it needed a heater blower switch ,a iffy pull handle door lock ,a sticky starter & duff window washer ,but it was stood on a plinth in a sports car showroom since 2019 .But parts were reasonable and there are lots of M.G. specialists . I was offered the car originally for £ 5,000 but knit picked and got it for £ 4,600 a year ago . I also have 2000 P6 Rover and parts for that are silly and a Triumph TR7 mechanical parts are cheap but body parts and lights are expensive ,but it"s faster and corners better & nicer to drive than my M.G.b but doesn"t look as good and seems to have been put together by unemployed Russian plumbers .But if your happy with the car - job done ?.

That’s not a bad price tbh , the last one I did for a customer was £45,000 in total although arguably once finished there wasn’t really much of the original car left. Looks good that though
I've restored/refurbished many classics over the past 25 years; purely for pleasure. I've never expect to return a profit but I have kept the loss to a minimum. I never spend more on the vehicle than it is worth and never get trades people to do anything. Spend 'their' money on tools and equipment and teach your self. Thousands of MGB's are available so it's easy to make a big loss on restoration/ refurbishment.
Off-topic, I just spotted you parking your Cobra on another video covering last Sunday's meet in Weybridge. Didn't realise it was yours at the time as I had turned up late. @@Brettoh well I bought an astra Arctic 5 years ago, first proper fast car and I just love the thing, it's not the best car ever but its just great to drive and Ill never sell it so.. it's a fairly used car when I got it, 63k miles and a Scottish car it's whole life so has rust in the usual astra places underneath so it ain't perfect, the plans to have effectively a modified concours car but not to the extreme degree so I can still use it on dry days, basically imagine a 7-8k paint job, 4-5k interior, another maybe 5k on the engine and box then suspension probably another maybe 2.5k then add wheels and brakes that's another 3k or so and finally interior youre talking another 3k or more and that all adds to around 35k I think I didn't add it up just a guess plus the cost of buying the car 5 years ago of 8500 that's the mid 40k range without going in to major details of my plans. I bought my 77B for $3200, I've put about 12 grand into it thus far and its still nowhere near completion. Its a never-ending project.
keep up the good work Boss..
Nice , I enjoy videos on this car
Does not matter what you spend on a car if you are keeping it and it's sentimental
My dad has a Rover P5B original unrestored luckily
At the end of the day. 20k on a car you own and love. Or 20k down the drain for that PCP whip all the boyz down asda have…
agree with you 100%
That is a small car and 6k for painting is a lot 😅 I want to respray my vw golf mk1 but I think I have to do it myself 🤣
Bloody hell! My roadster will top out at about £3k fully restored. That includes the purchase price, though all the labour is my own.
Off-topic, I just spotted you parking your Cobra on another video covering last Sunday's meet in Weybridge. Didn't realise it was yours at the time as I had turned up late. I was in the silver 911 Turbo opposite the entrance... and parked facing the wrong way because I'm like that. 😅 I did see you drive off - nice sounding car!
Wanted to say how much I enjoy your videos and I think you're the only car spotter vlogger that I follow as the others are pretty boring, even the more famous ones.
Are you attending the Pistonheads meet in two weeks?
Thank you :)
I am on the PistonHeads list with my Cobra, hoping to attend for post-Birthday celebrations
@@AdamC3046 Cool. You can figure out who I am from the list. I'll be late again! #Idontdomornings
Early Happy Birthday!
Absolutely gorgeous
Keep it up
Rubber bumpers are fantastic I've had mine for 8 years. They're coming into there own now and are no longer sneered at. If you want chrome buy 1,don't convert a rubber bumper !
This wasn't a rubber bumper, it's an original chrome bumper car.
@AdamC3046 sorry adam, this wasn't meant for you I was watching another video and was writing a reply to that when it flicked to yours,so it somehow must have gone to you. Apologies, I know yours is an original chrome! Keep up the excellent work
Nice work keeping a classic on the road. Only thing id say the respray was abit over priced
It was a lot more than I wanted, but it did include a lot of rust repair and the fitting of the wings.
@@AdamC3046 thats not to bad but id say a respray should be about £4500 for a good job mabe more if you go to a super expensive place.
Still like you say its about the sentimental value and your own keen eye they spots the bad points.
I dont the same with my car i got a bad chip in the bonnet and roof and got them re sprayed just to please my self when looking as the car(it bugged the hell out of me every time i washed it )
@@edd95gti85 depends on the respray you want and if the metal is needing worked ect. I'd estimate a concours paint job for my astra will cost 7k all in from a ford rs gold cup quality painter
I've calculated 40 to 50k to do my astra how I want it.. I couldn't give a shit if people tell me that's not worth it but the thing means the world to me and never going to sell it
Might be a while doing that resto I guess..

I had a lot of carbon fibre plans but scrapped that as its a bit pricey and I'd be damn lucky to do what I want😂
3:09 Oh wow a pocket bike where can I find & buy one? 🤓😲🚲
Im semi restoring a saab 900 and im already approaching the £10k mark.. 😩🤔
Well worth it though such a great car
The car looks fantastic.
wow, 6k never expected that much for a re spray.
3:45 - Taking editing hints from SRUK lol
I'm making the hard decision between a Lotus Evora and a house currently...and my girlfriend is indecisive so the car is looking appealing
I don't know who SRUK is

HI ADAM
I noted wings £1209, I think i paid £59 each for mine in 1987 - JWL 650N
what do you do for a living ?
What's the song called @3:45?
$17k to restore but I bet you smile every time you drive it. Don’t get that feeling in a new $17k car.
ITS OKAY MRS JENKENS!
Well at least you can drive and enjoy it now 😂😂
rule when you restore a car. For what you gonna thing it's gonna cost multiply x3 :D been there !!
No price on love. I've had one or two cars ive spent more than its worth in the market.👍🇦🇺
Nice video, lovely car🏁
sounded all fair and reasonable until the paint bill. Holy..
Great car, you got a lot done for the money...
You can't put a price on happiness.
Don’t beat yourself up too much! The car is obviously a keeper and you’ll get many years of enjoyment from it. It’s a lovely restoration and you should be proud of it.
P.s. I can empathise with the costs as I’m a TVR owner!
Now, some decent fast road suspension and the engine stripped again and race prepped, if will all feel worth it. 😜
GT`s are getting much harder to find compared to convertibles these days...especially nice ones.
If it makes you happy, why not.😁
Hi, who did the bodywork
Manawey Bodyworks
The best thing about spending too much money restoring a classic car is ..it won't cheat on you ! LOL
Love the old classics .... they did a grate job man...... end of the day, if you put that thing in you are just gonna die :/. Grate motor tho, they are grate little things;)
