Employee Onboarding #1: When you get a new employee, set the expectation that you’re going to be giving him/her regular and balanced feedback.
Employee Onboarding #2: Tell employees why you’re going to give feedback: To help them grow and develop, not to make employees feel badly about themselves.
Employee Onboarding #3: Employees will be more open and receptive to feedback when they know you’re giving feedback to help them vs. judge them.
Employee Onboarding #4: While it’s your employees’ responsibility to be open to your feedback, responding to feedback without becoming defensive is very difficult. It’s easier to hear and absorb feedback when we trust the other person’s motives.
