This level is so genius in the sense that it was completely empty. After all the action in Paris you finally had a breather..and it just felt so weird to relax, your brain just couldn't accept it and stand down. Incredible pacing level wise. Another great example is Hong Kong. Everyone is chasing you throughout the game up to that point and finally you get into a crowded market with women, children and other civilians and you feel so claustrophobic and untrusting of EVERYONE. Incredible Game.
And you can discover all sorts of things, items, book, keys, little secrets all the way through the mansion, all the while getting a live commentary from the daughter. What a unique idea for a level, and it totally worked.
I have to agree, was a strange level where you could just look around, you keep thinking something is about to jump out at you but not. And the stories from Nicolette provided some real tension as well. Felt like an escort mission where the escort could head home after a job well done.
That level felt pretty creepy. Pretty much the creepiest Deus Ex ever felt, even Panhaea Complex was not this level of unsettling. Eerie serenity, that uncomfortable sensation that it is something constantly watching you, that somehow, this place here, cannot be safe, Nicolette prancing around with her romantic nostalgic ramble, while you're WILL FIND NO HELP HERE. BETH DUCLARE HAS BEEN ALREADY DISSECTED AND PLACED INTO CRYOGENIC STORAGE.
that quote gives me chills. i was a kid when i played it first time. if i read nietzsche in my teens and all that i owe it to this game... such a meaningful experience.
The brilliance of this song is the feeling of loss. The electronic instruments indicate that you are in a high-tech world, but the poignant melody suggests that, on the way to the world as exists, the innocence of the past was lost and this empty mansion is a cruel reminder of that.
I feel like we're seeing the beginning of the Deus Ex timeline in real life. I'm well beyond the point of despair though. Good luck, that's all that matters now.

Most atmospheric level in any game I ever played, Especially when you open the vault behind the painting and read the last message on the data cube from her mother (before her death) to Nicolette, it's very moving for just a computer game, but typical of what made Deux Ex so great.
I almost completely forgot about this part of the game, played it again and man is it an experience, the music is half of it. It was great to relive it and unravel the mystery twice, and now that i think about it its one of the most ROMANTIC moments in gaming.
there is literally nothing romantic about that game. denton never got into any kind of romantic involvement. whatever you're talking about is coming from your own feelings projected onto the game.
You fully realise how amazing really this track is, only when you reach this location in the game yourself. Exploring old family castle with beautiful girl, and knowing that you cannot leave emptyhanded, because millions of lives is counting on you - i can't remember something being that amazing in modern games. Even deus ex hr and md has nothing on very first deus ex
Something I just remembered about this wonderful game. Often at times I felt like I just wanted to walk around locations. Todays games you just wanna run get the job done, finish the game. With Deus Ex, you took your time to explore and experience this incredible vast world. What a masterpiece.
Very true. The amount of times that I have paused in my exploration of the world and just looked around and breathed in the ambience easily makes up more than half of my time playing the game. Especially when it came to the Revision mod.
i feel regret cause i played this game and know everything ..wish i forget everything about it everytime i end it so i live all the hype and atmosphere each time i play ....MASTERPIECE this game has no rival FFS
True. Deus Ex can still be enjoyed to this day. Hell, I think the atmosphere, story, gameplay and soundtrack (which pretty much make up a game, not just graphics) are still better than many new games that have come out. Deus Ex is a master piece. A game that can be enjoyed even decades after it came out. :)
The iconic cover art... the hypnotic ambience of this song... Deus Ex is just amazing. I only first played this game last year, but I already consider it to be up there with Ocarna Of Time and KOTOR, and the incredible soundtrack doesn't hurt.
Most beautiful theme in the entire soundtrack in my opinion, which is a lot to say. I usually take a lot more time than necessary exploring the Chateau just to listen it. Damn it, Ion Storm, we could never list enough reasons as to explain why this game is such a master piece.
This music gives me chills of joy. I remember how involved I was with this game by the time I made it to this point. Emotionally involved. The plot is amazing. The game is without equals!
Freakin' beautiful. I LOVED this part of the game. It was such a nice and interesting change of pace from all the stealthy/run-and-gun action up to that point.
Unreal engine 1 games has the most epic, dreamy and emotional soundtracks. Actually new games are easily forgottable, instead of masterpieces from 1997-2002.
Deus Ex was an absolute triumph in the history of PC gaming. It makes me very sad that this kind of gaming experience probably will never be repeated ... :-( And with most of the original creators gone, I don't expect much from DX3 either. R.I.P Deus Ex.
I love 0:01 - 1:09 and this soundtrack literally creates another dimension of Unreal (of course it's the same composers). Most of these songs would've worked in Unreal seamlessly. Just beat Deus Ex for the first time last night, and all I have to say is I wish I played this game 13 years ago.
I used to listen to this whole soundtrack while falling asleep back in 2003. I would open my bedroom window on cool winter nights in Florida and listen to the wind blowing through the trees outside my window at midnight. It's a very fond memory of my teenage childhood. It seems so long ago now 😔
This game was far beyond its time, it may be considered dated now, but the gritty, hardcore problem solving nature of gameplay made for an awesome experience. By far one of the greatest games released ever.

One of my favourite missions in the game. It was so nice to not have to fight off or sneak around a bunch of troopers, but just explore a mysterious mansion with this music playing. And Icarus' voice lines are extremely creepy.
