Game soundtracks in the 90s and early 2000s frequently had this level of brilliant atmosphere. They generated a profound sense of immediacy and urgency in the games, and generated a feeling of hyper-reality for the game universe. I don't know why they've lost that, but I personally blame the transition to over-produced film inspired music that generally forgoes flavour and feeling for dramatic point emphasis.

Deus Ex predicted: 1. 9/11 2. Paris terrorism 3. Virus made to kill humans ("[Pianka] argued that the sharp increase in the human population since the onset of industrialization was destroying the planet," wrote Ballantyne for News Weekly. "He warned that Earth would not survive unless its human population was reduced to a tenth of its present number." In order to do this, Pianka proposed the idea of weaponizing Ebola, and specifically Ebola Reston, to travel through the air rather than just through fluids. Since AIDS apparently takes too long to kill off its victims, Ebola is a much better option, in his view. This, combined with the usual weapons of manufactured war and famine, just might be successful in culling billions of people from the planet.)

+mark84j Well HR (haven't played MD yet) often gave you multiple paths (social engineering vs. breaking in stealthily vs. shooting your way through and so on) but the freedom was definitely more limited than the freedom in the original. I think there is a systematic problem that causes those issues: Creating content becomes more and more expensive. While HR definitely had a lot of yellow paint spilled over the textures, the environments were generally beautiful and unique. For Deus Ex designing a new alternative takes a few low-polygon 3D models and a few low-res textures. In HR it would be much more expensive to design a couple of new environments that nobody is going to see anyways. The closer we get to photorealistic graphics, the less content we are going to see because it will be more and more expensive to design it.

I was actually part of the early Deus Ex fanbase. I played it back in 02 when it came out on PS2. Men In Black 2 had just been released, I heard it had a game and asked my mom to purchase it. She went to the local game shop, asked for the Men in Black game, this is what she came back with. I am so glad she followed the store clerks advice. Whoever he was, he changed my life. Deus Ex became a major influence in my teenage years. I was on Deus Ex forums and websites. I actually did a class presentation on conspiracy theories back in 05. But I could not have foresaw how it would turn out. We actually created the monsters we swore to prevent. Back in those early days people like Q-anon AKA Ron/Him Watkins (I have suspicions, but can not confirm, it was 10 years ago) were forum members of a Deus Ex Wiki I took part in. People would create articles, joke about, theorise, swap fanfiction etc. No one could have predicted a Bob Paige would rise from our ranks and create a real conspiracy. Yet he did. I hadn't been a part of any of that for over 10 years yet I knew the second he appeared he was one ours... his language, his name.... he was pretending to be "Angel OA" just with different letters... It disgusted me. I still love the game. It's just I wish some people hadn't twisted its message to support far right views.
I love this game so much that I'm afraid to start playing, cuz I know I'll easily sink HOURS into it. EDIT: I beat it last night. Man what a ride, I felt like the star of an action movie. I'm just looking for a reason to replay, any reason at all. EDIT EDIT: And I found one, playing through on Realistic difficulty.
I just realized that the reason why JC is staring up on this poster is because the spotlight on his face is coming from one of those helicopters seen in the background

me at my new job when I decide to sabotage it by talking about how the CIA poisoned San Francisco in the 1950s to experiment with biological warfare as part of MK Ultra
***** You are quite stupid if you think they do. I'm NOT talking about a soundtrack that has like 2 good tracks. For example, MGS1 had awesome soundtrack, it had very good overall melodies and such. But then at MGS3, we only had few good tracks and rest of it was some quiet ambient crap.
***** Yeah sure MGS3 isn't exactly a new game, but it's just an example how the soundtracks have degraded from memmorable to the "some noise in the background", which happened with the MGS. MGS4 and MGS5 seems to continue this trend. I can't even remember what the soundtracks sounded like in those games, because they weren't memmorable enough. Usualy it's just the main title that sticks with you. And for example again Deus Ex Human Revolution had only few good tracks in it. Sure some of it fits the game ok, but it could have been way better. Main title was great (Icarus), rest of it was something I can't even recall atm. There are SOME good soundtracks, like Metal Gear Rising Revengeance. It's very clear they built the soundtrack to compliment the game thou. But that's how it should be. Most of the time it's just that ambient crap that doesn't move you to one way or another. Now that's a soundtrack I can recall completely, because it's catchy and fits the game. AND remember who called who stupid first. Great way to start conversation with someone for sure...
***** I'm ignoring them because I want to talk about those soundtracks in popular games, idiot. Indie games DO have amazing soundtracks, but it doesn't matter. Because they hardly influence the bigger games, do they? I do hope they do, but so far no dice. They aren't popular enough to SET THE TRENDS. See? :) I want all the games to have great soundtracks, or atleast most. Instead of this trend of having a few good tracks in the soundtrack and then leaving rest into this monotomy of blandness. And yes, most of the AAA games simply FAIL bringing great music into games. You can show me examples of these, but just like with Deus Ex: Human Evolution, it will be an album of few good tracks and rest is just forgetable garbage.
It's not pretty bad, it's actually good. It's not a typical FPS in a sense that you have skills to improve, so if you put your starting skills to be lockpicking and melee, of course you'll have a hard time to aim and hit with a pistol. As you progress with the game, you get enough XP points to upgrade any skill you want, plus you'll find augmentation canisters along the way and modify your character even more. Deus Ex is a great mix of FPS and RPG genre. If you know how to make a character you want, the gameplay is not bad as you claim. Morrowind has the same problem and is accused of bad gameplay by most of today's gaming crowd. The thing is, older PC games like Morrowind and Deus Ex require some knowledge before getting into the game, it's not like the games of today where you can jump right in.
Deus Ex is the best game series I have ever had the pleasure of playing. It's Brilliant and lovely! Unique and fun. It will always hold a place close to my heart.

Damn. I watched that and I don't even remember that being there. (And now, I am going to check it out again.) ;)
Glad to see you had fun, the game's epic
"playing it on realistic mode" wait there's other modes than realistic?
@ Won't lie, I'm not noticing an exceptional change in difficulty. Considering you were already just nearly a 2 shot to begin with.
I just realized that the reason why JC is staring up on this poster is because the spotlight on his face is coming from one of those helicopters seen in the background
I always thought he was just balls deep in some of that puss-puss, y'know

Quickly becoming the most important form of modern media ever created
Yeah, this all happened because younger me litterly found a deus ex copy in a scrap yard about to be burned, so they gave it for free, and now younger me had a veteran's childhood
I think I really broke the replay button wtf
THE soundtrack. All of my childhood right there.
I played this 2012 first time and my god i cant even describe how good it was. There simply isn`t any game that manages to make this kind of atmosphere.
me at my new job when I decide to sabotage it by talking about how the CIA poisoned San Francisco in the 1950s to experiment with biological warfare as part of MK Ultra
As soon as this music plays I can hear the distinctive sound of those crisp footsteps on the hard floor...
man i wish anna navarre and gunther hermann had their own spin off game from the time when they were like top agents prior to paul and jc arrival.
+Jordan Hamlin Don't kill them you silly goose.
Why? They wanted to protect the MJ12 conspiracy,to me their nothing but traitors
The current prequel series is getting very close to their era.
Either I'm crazy or this game was... but man its all coming together
If this is ambient music, I'd rather have this than what ambient music is today in games: completely forgetable.
I like the melody here.
*****
You are quite stupid if you think they do.
I'm NOT talking about a soundtrack that has like 2 good tracks. For example, MGS1 had awesome soundtrack, it had very good overall melodies and such. But then at MGS3, we only had few good tracks and rest of it was some quiet ambient crap.
*****
Yeah sure MGS3 isn't exactly a new game, but it's just an example how the soundtracks have degraded from memmorable to the "some noise in the background", which happened with the MGS.
*****
I'm ignoring them because I want to talk about those soundtracks in popular games, idiot.
Indie games DO have amazing soundtracks, but it doesn't matter. Because they hardly influence the bigger games, do they? I do hope they do, but so far no dice. They aren't popular enough to SET THE TRENDS. See? :)
I want all the games to have great soundtracks, or atleast most.
***** u mad
u mad tho
This is one of the best games I've ever played, and I played it the first time last year after the more recent deus ex games.
I listened this music when I was a kid.
I love this theme from Bangladesh. It is so futuristic!
It's hard to get into this game if you're a bit younger like I am, but if you do it's really damn worth it.
Really ? Aww c'mon i'm 16 now and I used to play this game when I was quite young ( maybe 6 - 8 ) and I LOVED it and I still do to this day! :D
the story and atmosphere send chills down my spine. but the gameplay is pretty bad.
The thing is, older PC games like Morrowind and Deus Ex require some knowledge before getting into the game, it's not like the games of today where you can jump right in.
smokew33d4lyfe420xx Pretty bad, huh? Try being a little more stealthy if you think this is typical FPS gameplay.

Came across this the other day and it inspired me to cover the song on my channel! So thank you uploader! brought back good memories
feels pretty welcoming, like a technological advanced safehouse
"By the way, Denton. Stay out of the ladies restroom"
Deus Ex is the best game series I have ever had the pleasure of playing. It's Brilliant and lovely! Unique and fun. It will always hold a place close to my heart.
It started, the rise of big tech eras begins now
Does that mean I don't get the job?
When you find out the Trilateral Commission is part of something that you didnt know:
Came back from Cyberpunk 2077....Expecting it to be the Next gen Deus EX like game with all its hype
well,It's disappointing and yet again Deus EX still reminds to be the legendary Cyberpunk Franchise yet.
Does anyone know where the bit in 0:12 came from? It's not in the game files
This version is from the OST that came with the GOTY edition.
@@Gliese380 Oh alright
I think that bit was the best part of the song imo
WHY CONTAIN IT? Also veeeery relevant in 2020
Who is the real Bob Page? WHO? Who? Is it a person, an entity, or a group? No one knows. But one thing for sure, the recession is coming!

Definitely one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard for a video game, this soundtrack.
