OMG, my very first car. And mine was an LSI with Anti Lock Brakes and AC. This was an incredible car and so reliable. A drunk driver rear ended me at 80 km/h while being chased by the police. I was crushed into the back of a Taurus wagon. I should have been killed, but by some miracle, I lived and the safety first design of this car, was unfortunately, lumped with the previous generation Metro. The police officer that visited me in the hospital said he would buy one for his daughter as he couldn't believe I survived being sandwiched between a Taurus and Honda Accord. I have Volt and Model 3 now, but would give anything to drive 'Mister Metro' just one more time. I miss it so much after watching this. 😊

We'll never see a car like this Geo Metro again... the height of simplicity, reliability and excellent fuel economy at an affordable price. I had one as a rental car back around 1996 (though it was automatic) and it was surprisingly fun to drive!

I had a black 1995 Pontiac Firefly SE 3 door hatchback with the same 1.3 liter 4 cylinder engine with automatic and I loved that car. It was pretty peppy, REALLY good on gas and very reliable. I had it until 2008 with over 300,000 kilometers on it. I only got rid of it as it was getting hard to get parts for it when things did break. I miss that car.

I have a 99 metro as my daily driver. I get compliments on it all the time, people are always sharing stories like the ones in the comments here. My metro spends most of it's life with short drives around the city, still gets around 40mpg in the city at 220k miles, even more on the highway as in 5th gear, it barely idles and is so light, it just glides down the highway. You can park it just about anywhere and is really easy to maneuver all around. I have it for 2yrs now, bought and used it for food delivery for most of the that time, perfect car for it. Now it's turned into my favorite car I have ever owned...even compared to the few new more expensive cars I have unfortunately bought. Mine is a 5spd, also manual everything, so it's quite a workout to drive but I am used to it. The only downside...is hills...it HATES any steep incline, luckily, being a manual and I can push through it...but it hates every second of it.

I remember the Geo Metro in the nineties I had a few friends in high school that had them automobile manufacturers today need to take a note from the past the American masses need a cheap car like this these things were under $7,000 base price they were always running specials at 6500 bucks brand new they boasted 58 miles to the gallon they were reliable and easy and cheap to work on even a little 13 inch tires back in a day we're like $30 a piece and cheap to replace there's millions of people in this country that would embrace a cheap and expensive car like this for the masses in this country if somebody would produce one today a No-Frills point A to point B car to get yourself back and forth to school or work we don't really have that in this country anymore about the cheapest POS they have on the road is still $15,000 or more and with the price of full coverage insurance going up every day even that is unobtainable there for the poor people living paycheck-to-paycheck in this country

Joseph Atnip Mirage. They can be had for about 10 grand. More airbags, safer, 10 year warranty, standard a/c and power features, slightly faster and similar gas mileage. I have a Metro convertible and I love it but I also have a Mirage and the Mirage is a much better car in every way.

    • @DickTickles
      @DickTickles 4 роки тому

Not to mention that these Geo Metros you can still find out on roads even after 25 years, the cheapest cars made today have so much plastic and computer crap in them the first owner would be lucky to get 15 years out of them.
Problem is those who want a small car like this want it to be electric, but I don't see electric cars being as "green" as a gasoline car that gets 50 mpg. I can't say that if the Metro were made today it could sell for under 10 grand, if it was, it'd have to be made in China.
I've been thinking recently that the goal for transportation should be to make buying a reliable, fuel efficient small car as cheap as possible. 13 grand for a POS Mitsubishi is not the answer, electric cars won't be cheap for decades, need to go back to basics.

Bought a white xfi off the showroom floor in 1989 for 7800 dollars, window sticker said 58 mpgs on the Hywy and 53 in the city, got every bit of that.
In 1994 had to trade it in for a safer vehicle for my two young daughters, only drawback other than the safety factor was
1 clean the egr valve, to keep your fuel injector clean, and avoid burnt valves, and
    2. Rust, they were built so light for gas efficiency ,primarily important were the A arms on front .
The car never failed to start, honda like dependability, and drove great through snow, the small tires cut through well and front wheel drive assisted it well.
Loved the little car, in 2009 at the height of the gas crunch these cars were commanding big money, I lucked out and bought a 1992 red geo convertible, for 1600 dollars, I've still got it, and I'm keeping it.
Cute sporty looking little car in surprisingly great shape.
It gets about 48 mpg, only the xfi got the 58.
Also got a 2001 Honda insight, 68 mpg, and 2017 Chevy Trax.
Love my Geo, really is anything but a throwaway car, extremely dependable.

These little Suzuki built in Japan metros we're tough little cars. I still see the 3-cylinder hatchback versions zipping through Miami traffic almost on a daily basis. They were affectionately nicknamed " the Japanese beetle" because of how easy they were to work on and the affordability of replacement parts. There definitely were some versions that were better than others. Strangely you would think that the smaller engine option which was the 3-cylinder would be the least reliable but it's actually the 3-cylinder that was more reliable then the 4-cylinder. I think one of the reasons for that is that most 3 cylinder models were sold with the 5-speed manual transmission which has turned out to be a pretty Bulletproof unreliable tranny while the 4-cylinder was most commonly optioned with the automatic transmission which wasn't really known to be very troublesome but it definitely didn't last as long as the manual versions did. These cars were built to be tough but basic little runabouts and we're perfect for third world countries and other less-developed areas. The more equipment and options you loaded onto this car the less reliable that junk became. I had a teacher that owned a 1997 3-cylinder Metro hatchback. She drove the car for 13 years and racked up over 320 K miles on it. The two biggest expenses during that time was a replacement clutch around 275k and a air conditioning compressor. She loved the car but knew it was time to Let It Go but unfortunately by the time she made up her mind GM headlong discontinued the Metro and head replaced it with the ghastly little Korean shitbox Aveo. The salesman assured her that the Aveo was basically a redesigned but much more plush Metro. It definitely wasn't! Not only did it go through a transmission, AC, power steering and abs issues, but it also blew two head gaskets on both the original and in the replacement engine. Luckily it all happened under warranty and after only 3 years she traded it in at a major loss on a pre-owned Corolla. She told me that she paid just under $9,000 for the metro and drove it for 13 years but paid just under $16,000 for the Aveo and barely got three years out of it. I was the one that recommended she look at a used Corolla. That was over ten years ago in the last time our paths crossed which was shortly after the pandemic started she told me that she still had that 2005 Corolla but she passed it down to her son and was now driving a little RAV4. Like me she's a Toyota owner for life
