- Will it RUN? This cheap car has been setting in my yard too long and needs to move .Extra video of my little Geo metro that's been sitting in my yard for the last 4 + years without being started. @@thumperpaul that type of cars were made here in Hungary too. Has been sold as a Suzuki Swift :) from 1.0L to 1.6L. Im sure both got some differences tho.
It's a US version of the Suzuki Swift. :) We have a lot of running ones here, because here was the European manufacturing site. Greetings from Budapest! :)

In Canada, the Suzuki Swift version used a 4 cylinder, and this car was also sold as a Chevrolet Sprint and a Pontiac Firefly, using the 3 cylinder. There was a convertible version of those. We had a Geo Metro with the 3 cylinder and automatic for a while. It was "cheap and cheerful", but not your first pick to be in for a collision with a Mack truck. My main memory of it is of following a truck on a highway in thick fog at night, seeing his tail lights jump up and down, and then following him over a dead deer. We had fur on the underside for a while. 270,000 miles is really impressive, as is 50 mpg (62.5, in Imperial gallons) with the technology of that time. We aren't making the great advances in mpg I'd like to see.

Yogis Friend I have rebuilt the geo prizm's engine(similar but 4 cylinders), and it was easy. It Would make great content!
why tear in on a motor with 280k on it ? replace it with a good used motor
@@marksimmons3801 Good question. These motors are known for running for like 500k miles, but the prizm ones (mostly 1998 and later) burned lots of oil. So the ones in the junkyard are all ran out of oil, thats the only thing that kill these things. Even a good junkyard motor will start burning oil shortly after I install it. To fix the issue, you have to drill 2 extra oil drain holes in the piston. I figured I could either get a junkyard motor that will maybe run for 20k more miles before oil consumption kills it, or I could rebuild mine with fixed pistons and run it for another 200k.

I fought with one of these a while ago. No brakes was the main problem but as soon as it got in my shop it brought on a whole set of hells. Didn't charge, sloppy shifter, you name it.
It might've gotten 50mpg had it not a constant fuel leak. Lol.
Yknow, Metros are oddly common in Kentucky. Probably because they don't rust so fast here.
@@RichieRichOverdrive I always sprayed use oil in the body panels and sub frame. This one is almost rust free. The brakes on these were bad when they were new. It was a common upgrade to swap for larger rotors and better calipers. Thanks for watching friend👍

Wow, That brings back memories. I was handed a 96 Geo Metro to play with. And since the previous owner looked like she used it for a demolition derby contender. There wasn't one panel or door or even the top that wasn't seriously damaged. I thought I would try my hand at auto-body repair, just because.
Amazingly, I did teach myself after many many times of redoing the same areas and not liking how they looked. But then I finally understood how it was done and refurbished that car back to new condition. Even the inside headliner and seats, carpet and you name it. It was amazing the difference in that vehicle once I was finished refurbishing it. The new paint finish was near perfect and the local body repair guy stated he couldn't have done it any better and was amazed I did that on my first attempt. And it was that same red color as well...
That battery is even bigger than than the 3cylinder engine lol
I loved my Geo metro. They were incredible on gas. I used to shut the AC off to get more horsepower to merge into traffic. Mine starting using huge amounts of oil and I suspected it had a broken ring. Thanks for sharing.
Still sounds like when it was new!✌😂👍i knew a semi truck driver who have one of those, and he's about 6'4" and he said he loves the little thing! Because of the mileage he gets, he also told me that his car got over 300,000 thousand miles on it! Wow! Very impressive!

We had the same year make and model of that POS. Those 3 cylinders were bullet proof for a long time. Head gasket finally went at about 400K miles. We called it "putt-putt". Local kid bought it for 100 bucks and we still see that damn car running around today. Damn thing just won't die.
This car made me remember when my older sister bought her first car: a Subaru Justy 4WD 1992. It was the four door model. I loved that car.
Got me beat, Steve! I bought a 1992 Subaru Legacy wagon from a co-worker for $150. He'd abandoned it in the employee parking lot for about 3 years. All four tires were sitting on the rims, so I aired them up and put a new battery in it and it turned over about 1.5x and popped right off. I drove it for about 5 years and then gave it to my dad, who is still driving it to this day. Japanese cars from this era were absolutely indestructible.
Nice to see one of these in working condition again! My wife had a '94 when we met; it was a good little runner, getting 45+ MPG on cross-country runs...we have a friend w/ the later style, 2000 one; he's meticulously kept it up over its 20 years, and now has 500K miles on the original engine (he does all his own maintenance/repair work, and keeps a storage unit full of spares, since they were discontinued)!
Buddy had one about the same year with a wore out engine, He took it a mechanic in town who rebuilt these things frequently.....about 4 hours they had new bearings and rings in it(rebuilt without pulling the engine) and he drove it for another couple of years and sold it still running good

i love little reliable econobox cars. I had a toyota i got 300k+ miles out of. Didnt win any beauty awards and it hit 0-60 in ... several minutes but with minimal maintenance it basically never broke. Good to see you getting more life outta that old Metro.
These little Suzuki Swift's are super reliable , in Hungary everyone has one since they were built here , they keep it as the cheap economy car , we have a Suzuki alto , a similar 4 cylinder small car
i knew a teacher from hungary who had a swift, when she moved to the uk she put all her stuff in it and drove it over, got it re-registered and kept driving it over here until it was crashed into, she swore by that little lhd car

@@julioc.7760 when gas hit $4.00 a gallon a few years back Volkswagen Rabbits were selling for $5,000 or higher on Ebay. Diesel at that time was selling for $2 a gallon. Now that the big 3 have decided to stop selling small cars in favor of high dollar low mpg suvs the resale on these little cars has gone up.
The rebuild kit is like $150 I just bought one. Hella cheap I love this car. Especially if you get the convertible
My first car was a 93 Geo Metro, automatic. Car wouldn't move out of its own way.
90s automatic transmissions were garbage. a manual metro was and is a very decent car. still lots of them running around europe and latin america.
Auto were hopeless. Stick shifts were great
My daily driver now is 94 geo metro, now 27 years old. Still start like a champ and drives fine. of course you don't expect 0-60 times of a sports car, but given the high mpg, you get a small, fuel efficient engine.

My dad had a 91 3 cylinder and I had a 98 (Suzuki badge) 4 cylinder. Both cars are gone now sadly. I have a dream every now and then that is basically this video where I find them hidden behind my old house and they still work.
The Metro looks very similar to the 1988 Dodge Colt I owned. Those big windows gave it great visibility, but its shortcoming was its lack of power. Despite that, I loved it!

I ran a half dozen of these into the ground commuting. They were incredible. I got to where I could pull that 3 banger out in an hour and a half. Easy to work on. Fantastic mileage.

For us in Europe (Suzuki Swift) These are quite tough cars. The engine can indeed last quite some time and will easy do 300 000 km+. To reach that: Just give it its regular service, oil, coolant and the car is indestructible!

Best part about geo metro is ease of service. I can do oil/filer change in just 10 minute flat. No jacking needed. Way easier than any other car, including toyota and honda.
Them Geo Metros are tough little SOBs. Years ago my cousins were ran off the road while in a Metro it rolled several times and slid upside down into a telephone pole. The car was still running when the first responders arrived.

During the 90's Art Bell spoke highly of his pair of cherished Geo Metros on his radio show. He had one for himself and one for his wife. With a peak radio audience of nearly 15 million listeners, he helped sell a lot of Geo Metros!

I had a 1987 Chevy Sprint which was the forerunner to these cars. I bought it brand new and got 327,000 miles out of it. You are correct, for the price they were great cars. I also had a 92 metro and the Geos didn't have the engine and transmission matched as well as the Sprints did. The Geo always seemed underpowered while the Sprint had more than enough. I was amazed at the torque that little 3 cylinder put out as long as you shifted frequently and kept it in the torque curve.
This inspires me. I should try to start my 98 Cadillac STS that has been sitting for 4-1/2 years. The only thing that scares me are all the bees, hornets or wasps nests in the damn thing...

I'm in the same boat. I'm not worried about the wasps, I'll buy a can of raid and give them hell. I just hope that no mice chewed up my starter wires. I just put new everything in it before I parked it.

brother owned one. good car for a high school kid and a person who doesn't want to put lots of money into a car.easy to repair with the right tools. Kind of miss cars like these. Reason brother had to get rid of it was it cant handle the winters where we live and eventually from driving it everyday the frame started to rust out.

Unironically for a total shitbox these were great commuter cars. Tougb, reliable & got insane mileage if you drove them right. It takes a lot to screw these little cars up.

I had 96 suzuki swift 1.0 52hp 5d. My first car. It drove everywhere. Woods, fields, highways, snow, mud... nothing could stop it xD
Had a Metro, Firefly and Swift GTI. Absolutely loved them.
Undid the motor and lifted it out by hand for a rebuild.😳 the Napa dealer got me a rad and they thought it was a heater core😂. Ah, memories.

I’m in U.K. and have owned a Suzuki Swift (same car, different name) for ten years. I bought it for just £825 with 14,000 miles on it. It’s been the most reliable car I’ve ever owned in forty seven years of car ownership and by far the cheapest to run.
I'd love to see it get a deep clean.
What a charming little car, I always admired those little Geos. My buddy's father drove one even though I'm sure the family could have easily replaced it with something newer.
Reminds me of my 88 Corolla, wish we still had that one sitting around.

I had the Chevy Sprint version, I loved that car.
Sometimes it would flood and I'd have to pop the hood and unplug the injector to get it to start.
My sister had one of these. Loved driving it. Like a go-cart with AC.
My sister did too. A 1989 Metro LSi. She bought it brand new and was definitely the only one around our town that had one for quite a while!!!
Best car I ever owned was a 91 Metro xfi. Never had a day's trouble with it. 65 mpg on the highway. 55 in the city. Only thing I ever changed on it was put a new muffler on it when I bought it. It had a small hole in it. I was driving with copper spark plugs and had to drop a gear to get over a tall bridge. Replaced them with platinums and made it over the bridge in 5th gear and was still accelerating. Great little car. Neon blue. Called her, Doodlebug, because with the hole in the muffler she sounded like a VW bug.
I owned 2 Geo's when I was younger. A 93 and 96, at the same time. DAMN! I miss those little cars. At one time I parked my 96 for 3 years for some reason...maybe tranny was messed up, but I put Stabil in the fuel tank when I did park it. That little sucker fired up and drove on the first try.
The excessive oil consumption is most likely caused by bad valve seals. Nothing more. These Suzuki engines (Geo = Suzuki), are pretty durable for such dinky things.
On the documentary wreck trek they had a tiny suzuki maruti and that thing just kept going.

Bought one new in 1991. Up here in Canada they were made by Suzuki and sold by Pontiac as the Firefly when they first came out. Man, they were dirt cheap and tough as nails! They were pretty gutless on the highway but you couldn’t beat the mileage! I sold mine with nearly 400,000 km on it. Still ran good but smoked a little. Nice to see one running again. I had a 1990 Firefly, a Canadian version of the Suzuki and it was a great car! Not alot of power but got awesome fuel milage. Very basic car, no power windows or power steering but the heater worked well in the winter. Extremely easy to work on, lots of room under the hood. Wish I still had that car to mess around with!

Ha, love it. My Geo Metro cost me 50 bucks 6 years ago. It now has 315,000 miles and still gets 50 mpg.
I used to have the same exact geo in white, It threw a rod on me at 146,000. I loved that little car with my entire soul, definitely would buy another.
We have a car called a metro in the uk ,it’s a “modern”squared off version of a mini and if you sit quietly you can hear it rust. Keep the videos coming they are something to look forward to in the cold wet uk..

I remember when these cars became gold back when gas skyrocketed. I think that was about 10 or so years ago? These cars in barely running shape was at least a grand. I always wanted one but I couldn't bring myself to paying an exorbitant price for a tin can.

@@KronosIV In the US, that is. AFAIK in Austria it's still mandatory to learn driving in a manual, otherwise you'll get a note in your licence stating you're only allowed to drive auto! Automatic cars are still a minority in Europe.

They can be a fun rally car with suspension mods. There is room for a Honda swap. The K20 is probably not a good choice but it has been done by notching the "frame" to clear the crankshaft pulley.
They were available in 4 cyl on the late 90’s. I had an 01,but loved the original better

Isn't it amazing how it's always those little "Cheapo, ol' junkers" that can sit for 20 years with Rotten Gas, and no attention whatsoever, and they will fire right up, as long as they have a good Hot Battery.
You.could take a really expensive ride, let it get this old, and be mistreated like this, and you would never in hell get it started again w/o spending a small Fortune. I love how these Cars will run damn near on Water. Seriously, there is very little that resembles Gasoline after it sits for this long, in a metal Tank going thru all the Seasons and Temperature fluctuations, there has been a massive amount of Condensation in this Tank which creates a lot of Water.

These cars are reliable little hard workers. I remember them being cheap, and with the oldest technology that was used in new cars in the 90's. They are rather prone to rust, and need some extra care than other cars of the age, but take good care of them, and they will reward you.

Yes, I know there's more ethanol in gas these days but that's still pretty impressive.
that little car is really a good car. Can run them all day and they give you good fuel economy. Id fix it up.
You can fix oil burners with a garden hose with a sprayer on mist. Get the engine up to operating temp and rev the engine up. Now slowly start spraying water do this for about 10 minutes. This cleans the carbon out of the ring lands and allows the oil control rings to work again.
I had a '95 in the same car. Most reliable car I've ever owned. I was careful about preventive maintenance and went 239K then turned it over to a 17 year old. He took it to 260K then I sold it to my neighbor. He still has it. I wish I could buy something comparable now. It was cheap to run and cheap to maintain.
When I took drivers ed, the instructor taught in a Geo Metro.

Hey, Steve, we owned a 92 Geo Metro for about 4 yrs and we loved it we went everywhere in it. It didn't have a lot of power, but the gas mileage was great.

I used to work at the factory that built these. Designed some of the tooling used to assemble them. Good to see them still out there in the wild 👍

Looking at this I'm pretty sure that if you left a contemporary modern car out in the open like that with all the computers and flash memory in them they wouldn't start. Much less one of these current modern cars that would be 28 years old like this Metro. You'd need replacement LCD screens and other such nonsense after 2 or 3 years that would be obsolete and a whole bunch of other computers/electronics that would be obsolete. Not looking forward to the day when I have to replace my "simple" car.
My Citroen XM also needed replacement LCD screens sooo..... Tho other than the hydraulic pump everything seems fine on it
