I had a 90 ... it needed an engine ... I was able to lift the engine out by hand by myself once it was disconnected - a good running junkyard engine was $150 and took about an hour and a half to be back on the road driving like it never happened
it was ultra cheap and lasted a lot of miles after that - I can't call it a terrible vehicle, but it was hilarious to drive
I rebuilt my Geo's engine. The bare engine block weighs 14 lbs. It's ridiculous.
its almost a costume-vehicle, because of how hilarious terrible it is, people would laugh but thumbs up at the same time
I guess it could be, if you thrash the engine
'till you need a replacement 😄
You know, I'm astonished that you people of the US find this strange and uncommon. In Europe until the late 90s you could do that basically with 75% of the cars driving around 😂
Well the Geo Metro and Chevy Sprint basically had Motorcycle engines.
They had 3 cylinder engines with 5 speed transmissions.
Back then, a car with more gears than cylinders was a funny thing.
“So you can be a pathetic little pipsqueak with your hair blowing in the wind” 2 seconds later*
“GOOD NEWS THIS GEO METRO COULD BE YOURS!!!”
*Rod and Tod:* "Yaaay!"
Could be, if it were $500.

He fits his description of a geo driver perfectly🤔😂
Doug's the kind of guy who tells a joke and then when no one laughs makes fun of his own joke for being lame.

I had a friend back in 93-94 who had the hatchback. Poor guy was determined to try to make the car fast. He slapped intake and exhaust on it. I recall him asking around the local performance shops looking for headers but just got laughed at everywhere he went. Hope you are doing well wherever you are, Dan.
Dan, Sir I salute you 🫡
I had a Metro only because I live in England it was an Austin Metro 1.0ltr 4 cylinder packing
43 Rampantly lethargic brake horsepower.
And I too was determined to make it faster than a 4 speed manual has ever been.
Turned out Marvin ( he was called Marvin the Metro) packed more dB than BHP what with 8 speakers and Sub canon I installed!
Dan's Metro is probably pushing triple digits by now
One day he floored it and probably exploded the tyres and caught fire because these can’t survive more than 100hp
To be fair when your car has only 50 horsepower, every additional horse is much more noticeable than if it had 300 😅
Well the car is fast, I mean, it is faster than you.

@@NitroTheHusky yikes! I see these convertibles in nice shape for $2300.
Over $5000 for that Metro.
For about that much money I found some decently useful cars (Manual) within' 300 miles from my location...
-2012 Honda Fit Sport, 177k Miles - looks good!
-2006 Ford Mustang, 121K miles - looks mostly clean!
-2007 Hyundai Accent, 65K miles - looks decent.
-2008 Mazda 3 S Sedan, 177K Miles - looks okay!
-2002 Volkswagen GTI VR6 174, 136K - looks fine.
While I do admire the Geo Metro charm and simplicity quite a lot, I will never spend over 2K for one even IF the car was in top condition, FUUUUUCK that!

@ham nai h your god sucks!
I had an English teacher in high school who drove a geo prism. One day in class, a student asked "how much did you pay for your geo metro?" And the teacher got furious, he goes "I do NOT drive a geo metro!" Even a geo prism owner was insulted that his car was mistaken for a Geo Metro😆😆😆😆😆😆
To be fair, the Prism was a rebadged Toyota Corolla. So definitely a better car over the Metro
True story???
Geo Prism is Toyota Corolla, not even a comparison to Metro
I once worked with a guy who drove a red metro convertible. He was as goofy as his car. He had substance abuse issues, no front teeth, and a Mohawk. He was fun to work with as he was always cutting up, goofing off, and was super comical. The crazy stuff he’d get up to, no surprise that he’s no longer with us. A true character.
hahaha, this is hilarious.
Man, everyone I've ever known who's owned a geo metro loves it to death. My grandma's friend owns one and every time I see her I make an offer and she tells me to go to Hell.
😂
I've had mine since 2008 I love it I could say the same thing 😂
I had a ‘94 that I bought off my dad in the early 00’s. His neighbor 4 doors down bought his a few months after my dad & when he sold his, I bought that one too. They were both manual & the same color. One had a perfect interior but engine problems, the other had a perfect engine & a roached interior. I ended up swapping everything so I had one in great shape inside & out with some spare parts. I loved that car.
Same with the Prism. I knew at least 3 people who had one and had nothing bad to say about them. Being able to work on it easily is another bonus about these cars.
So basically she tells you to go in Michigan, since Hell is located in Michigan
Doug:

Also Doug:
“This car can be yours!”
I'd buy it in a heartbeat if I lived in the US. Super cool car.
It's more of a collector car at this point. I hardly doubt there's anyone actually wanting to daily drive this thing. Especially when you can get super cheap, used economy cars with triple the horsepower.
Gotta promote his new website haha
Hey, there's nothing wrong with ironic car ownership, especially at this price point!!!

My mom had a 95 Metro. On the highway it was absolutely terrible but around town it's still one of the most fun cars I've driven apart from the lack of power steering. Being able to drive a car super aggressively, flooring it all the time, without it getting you into any trouble is a different experience.
The whole reason miatas & such were made.

It had great milage!
It has a kind of Yoshi's Island look to it
It suits the style of the early 90s. Look at Rugrats and Memphis design.
Www what is the wqqq
When I had my 94, I was racing everyone at a stop light.
And they didn’t even know it.
Had a first generation Metro, first new car I ever owned. It was the most reliable car I have had. Best $6000 I ever spent on a car. Lasted me over 10 years, 250,000+ trouble free miles. Nothing but general maintenance was ever required. Talk your shit about Metros all you want but that 5 speed 3 cylinder was very fun to drive and the quality for the money spent was off the charts!
In a lot of ways, a car like this is competing with motorbike commuting at it's price point. And when you do that comparison, it's really not that bad.
my friend in school had a 92 metro.. she beat it all thru school. drove it into uni. and it was hit by a snowplow and wrote it off.. had 300k on it. still..
He probably get paid, does the same for mirage, which is another perf car for our present time
You paid 6k for this pile of shit?
This, the Suzuki Samurai, and Honda Integra GSR, are three of the best low cost good cars for various reasons.
I had a 4 door Suzuki Swift (manufactured in Hungary) with 4 cylinders and 68 HP, based on the video it was a bit more carlike than the convertible. With 3 friends we made a 10 day trip with it, from Hungary through the Balkans to Greece, 4000 km total. We were very young and enjoyed it, did not care much about the lack of safety and comfort.
good for y8u chef other choes brst car geo meyero😊
When I was younger I had an ancient 1965 Pontiac Strato-chief, the cheapest version of that car available, it had a 0 to 60mph time of ten minutes. It had neither safety or comfort, no optional equipment whatsoever other than a crappy A.M. radio and one speaker in the dash, but it didn't seem to matter, the car moved you from A to B as it was designed to do and that was ok with my friends and I.

A 5.3 like the impala ss and the Pontiac gtp has..it might fit in there..after a lot of cutting and welding anyways
That “plastic key” wasn’t too unusual for the time, even my 1998 4Runner came with one. The point of it is that the entire design allows it to fit in your wallet with credit cards and whatnot….same size. And then if you accidentally had a lockout…..emergency key is in your wallet. Great feature IMO although I never used it. P.S.-it did have a metal interior too.
@Will Rivers well damn
I had a ‘94 Metro, by then they had switched to aluminum for the spare wallet key.
I think my mother’s ‘95 Ford Escort sport model came with one. I remember trying to test it and it worked but it felt like the thing was going to break off in the lock if you didn’t turn it EXTREMELY gently.

There's a scene on The Simpsons where Homer is chasing the the Flanders family with golf clubs in his hands as an homage to Terminator 2... Maude says "Come on Ned! Move this thing!" and Ned answers "I can't! It's a Geo!"... Pretty sure it was supposed to be a Metro.
It was a Geo Metro.
Definitely a prism! I can tell you with direct experience that the prism was probably as slow as the metro, and definitely slower with a family of four on board. I worked with a man for about 10 years that drove one of these. Considering how he could easily afford something much nicer, he got a lot of questions about it. He was "green" long before it became popular to do so and he drove it because it was inexpensive to buy, paid for, had nearly 400K miles with basic maintenance and got 50MPG highway and 40 city. That car literally cost pennies to drive and never left him stranded. He always said he'd sell it if it broke down on him. I wouldn't be surprised if he still had it.

If you need to get from A to B, without rushing or banging a hole on your wallet on fuel, this is your perfect choice. It's interesting not only for car enthusiasts, but also for cost-cutting, regular people. And the trunk can carry enough groceries for a single person's weekly consumption. And if you love to repair mechanical parts yourself, that little engine can be an easy pray, just like the VW Beetle. Thumbs up for this cute vehicle.
The Daihatsu Charade G100 1.0 turbodiesel is way better. Does 60 mpg and is more practical. In fact many small diesel hatchbacks today can get over 50 mpg pretty easily.

I inherited a white '95 Metro base model hatch from my parents when I got my driver's license. Mine came with nothing: no A/C, no passenger side mirror, no radio, but I loved it. My original radio was a boombox, before I put a full stereo (and subwoofers in it) - which turned it into a riding night club. Also added remote door locks - the advantage to nothing in the door, was aftermarket part installation was super easy - and a push-button hatch release on the dash. Other than A/C, by the time I was done with it there wasn't really anything I thought it lacked. It was super cheap and easy to maintain compared to modern cars.
Back in the late '90s when gas was less than a dollar, I could fill it up for like $5, which was a great money making scheme when everyone you know is willing to give you a couple bucks for a ride and only needed to get gas every couple of weeks. I can honestly say I once put 505 miles on a tank, and it then cost me like $15 to fill up, which is non-hybrid impossible nowadays.
I also had a good time driving it. It was a lot of fun in the snow since it weighed almost nothing, it was basically impossible to get stuck and easy to just drift around corners. While it may not have been very fast to 60, I always found it was pretty quick to 25-30 if you knew how to shift it, but the NJSP officer that ticketed me for doing more than 80 on the turnpike can vouch for its top speed.
My parents swapped me cars and sold it almost 20 years ago, and I still miss The Egg a little bit to this day.

So funny it’s exactly what I thought!!!!
It's funny how convertibles have come and gone in waves over the years. There are no "inexpensive regular car" convertibles any more. They're either sports cars or expensive luxury sedans. The fact that in the early '90s the cheapest new car money could buy had a convertible version is amazing.
There are no more affordable cars. Not like this Geo was.
My mom’s friend had a Geo Metro back then. The kid walks over and adjusts the passenger mirror. That’s how that works.
Doug could've used the trunk stick to adjust the mirror!
My mom had a Geo Metro
In fairness, if you were on your own and could reach a stick to wiggle if one existed, you could reach the mirror and wiggle that. Ingenious cost cutting.
Little known fact that manual mirrors drove up birth rates in the 80s and 90s.
Doug demuro is the kind of guy that has NO clue that there were adds for many many new cars that used to brag that it came with a right hand mirror! So, complaining about adjusting one yourself wasn’t the worse thing at the time.....
I rented a Geo Metro in the mid '90s. I took it on a business trip that took me through the mountains. I knew to be patient with it. It did pretty well for the trip.

My dad had the hatchback (?) version of the Geo Metro for most of my childhood. Seeing those door handles and A/C unit really took me back. Especially when one of the cylinders blew a gasket and we were rolling on 2 cylinders for a bit.
There we go, the metro hatchback!!!!!!!!!! machine of....cuck?

I owned 2 of them, when people would ask me why 2, I liked to joke that it was to strap one to my left foot & the other to my right foot 😂
Two years ago I saw a car nearly identical to this for sale, it was the same color and similar equipment, except it was branded as a Chevy Sprint (Canadian rebadge) and it had the 3 speed auto. I was on the fence about buying it, I watched this video and immediately went out to buy it. I love my little blue deathtrap, it's a piece of garbage, it's a horrible car, the convertible top leaks like a sieve, it had mice in it at one point and it's got more bondo than steel in many places but I love it all the same. Here in Europe we didn't have Geo, but the Metro Convertible was sold here for a few years as the Suzuki Swift convertible. It only had little success though and is extremely rare these days.
I have a hatchback that was given to me it’s actually pretty fun to drive. It makes me laugh every time I pass people going 80mph.
"This car is really slow." Yeah, cause the car was never designed with US highways in mind. The car was designed with Japanese cities in mind.
I mean... its still incredibly slow...
@@thathottstuff5075 I honestly doubt it's as bad as he makes it out to be. My '91 Civic wagon with the original D15B weighs more by a lot and prolly puts around the same power to the wheels. It's honestly not that slow around the city, and it's only really noticeable when you're trying to get on the highway.
@@koopatroopa187 No it is that bad even around town but like you said it was designed for ECONOMICAL inner city driving like they have in Japan where the cities are much more compact than most of our's!
@@martybowen1 Like I was saying. The D15B in my 1991 Civic station wagon was rated for 90hp at the crank when new. FWD Hondas generally lose about 30hp through the transmission, so let's say it was putting out about 60hp at the wheels. 30 years later, nearly 300,000 miles on the odometer, and valve seals that leak so bad the car burns a quart of oil a week, and I would wager the car is putting around 48-52 down right now at the wheels. The Civic wagon also weighs in the 2400+ pound range. So yeah, I highly doubt it's as bad as you and Doug are saying as my car weighs more, has less power, and it's not that bad to drive in the City.
The convertible Suzuki Swift/Geo Metro was probably intended to be a Kei car, a small car in Japan designed for congested cities. That's probably why it's so sluggish and small.
I have the Swift as a 5 door, no power steering, no AC, no nothing. It's a pretty fun car, I got it for $800 and never had any issues.
