  • I picked up an ND Miata! First stop, Protex Vancouver to have the paint protected. A quick video showing the wrapping process and my own experience with paint protection film on previous cars.

    I love how the bumper bar and badges etc. didn't have to be removed. Top job! Congrats on your MX-5 too!

      Thanks! I normally don't mind too much, but I agree it's a plus that those things didn't have to be removed. No risk of error when reapplied.

    I’m glad you picked up this car. You really seemed to enjoy it during your review. It’s a breath of fresh air in today’s sterile automotive world. It’s simply distilled, basic, driving bliss.

    Regarding the GT4 vs the Miata, overall the Miata is more fun in everyday driving, because the limits are much lower, and easier to exploit.
    It's the old saying, it's more fun driving a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

    You had or also have a GT4? and then went for a Miata? Wonder how many have made that transition? As a Miata drive I love it, but I dream of owning a GTS4

    Stupid question... Do you still wax your car after this is done? Or is it pretty much hose off and go?

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  2 роки тому

      I never do on cars that are wrapped. Just wash as normal and go. Some people do though. It's also popular now to do ceramic coat on top of wrap and then it's easier to keep clean.

    Congratulations on the new wheels! I'm curious to know if you waited to buy a 2017 model year ND knowing that the 2016 soft tops, and the GS (Club) in particular with the LSD, are prone to catastrophic manual transmission gear failures. I'm hoping Mazda Canada will extend the 5-year powertrain warranty for early adopters of the ND, like myself, since most of us Canadian ND owners don't accumulate many kilometres driving just 7 or 8 months out of the year. Revised manual transmissions are installed in all ND RF (Retractable Fastback) models and all 2017 ST (Soft Top) models built after September 2016.

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  7 років тому +1

      Unfortunately, I'm in the same boat as you! I had opportunity to buy a 2017, but this 2016 was a good deal and had the right options and in the color I wanted. I knew all about the gearbox failures before going in and did it anyway. I figure any car I get will have some kind of issue and as long as it's covered under warranty, I try not to think about it. For example, early 991 GT3s suffered from engine fires, then suffered from engine failure that wasn't acknowledged until recently. Then all the GT4s suffer from catastrophic gearbox failure in 3rd gear, all covered under warranty. Every car you get will have *something* to make you lose sleep. Best to just not think about it, enjoy the car, and let warranty take care of it when bad things happens. Just keep the various forum threads bookmarked in case you need to show the dealer later! The fact that the factory revised the gearboxes is an acknowledgement that there was a problem and I haven't heard of anyone being denied warranty from Mazda yet! We'll be ok!

      I placed my factory order just weeks before the first transmission issues began to surface on the forums. My major concern is that I'll be outside of the warranty period before my transmission fails and have to replace it on my own dime. For guys like you that track and/or auto-cross their cars, most of the failures seem to happen in the first 15,000km or so. I've just turned 11,000km on mine after 28 months of ownership, but it only sees spirited weekend duty mostly on the few curvy back roads here in Southern Ontario. Anyway, so far the car has been flawless (unless you count some minor wear marks starting on the soft top) and is an absolute blast to drive, so I'll continues to drive the wheels of it (while nobody notices...lol) and hope for the best. Enjoy yours as well and keep those great video reviews coming!

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  7 років тому

      Can you link me to any threads discussing soft top issues? I want to know what wear marks you are referring to!

      forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=593959
      Here's the main premature soft top wear thread. As I understand it, the ND soft top has undergone numerous revisions and different issues have been addressed with each. My car was built mid-February 2015 and has two developed 2 grey wear marks on each side that are discolouration for now, but may result in a top replacement before the warranty runs out. There's also a 'squeaking windows when wet' issue that was fixed shortly after my car was built, but I can live with that one. Car ownership was so much simpler in the era before the Internet as we were all oblivious to the minor flaws upon which we fixate today.

    Nice video! 👌 I noticed that there is no flim that goes over that glossy black piece in the grill where you have your license plate mounted. I'm thinking that piece is gonna get tons of rock chips? I'm planning to get exactly the same car as yours but and not planing to mount the front plate so it's going to be completely exposed. Is there reason why the kit doesn't cover that piece? Thanks!

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  2 роки тому

      I can't remember now, but you can actually have that glossy piece wrapped too. If it does not appear inside a pre-cut, then your installer can custom cut it for you. It can definitely be done.

    Which areas need to be protected in your opinion? Every ND hood is full of stone chips. I'm not sure about anywhere else really. Have you got any marks on your xpel in other areas?

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  4 роки тому

      Hey there! I think hood, front bumper are the most important in my opinion. I also like to get the front fenders (quarter panels) done as well. The rest of the car is more optional. It also really depends on where in the world you live. We have winter here with salt and stones and gravel tossed on the road... which really makes it very rough on cars and paintwork.

    Uh-huh! You got yourself a Miata. Congratulations. I noticed you got a gt4. Great car. A week ago I sold my 2011 GT3RS. That car I had a full body wrap with Expel film and ceramic coated on the whole car for better shine.
    Nevertheless, how do think of the the huracan 610-4 vs. 580-2 ? As I had Porsche for last two decades. I wanted try a different brand. Something new. Let me know your thoughts. 🦅🦅🇺🇸 from Southern California

    How long does this XPEL last? will it peel like wraps?

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  2 роки тому

      It does not peel off at all, but in my experience it does have wear and tear. Rock chips will leave marks, the edges will collect dirt... it is not perfect and eventually you'll want to replace it.

    Do you drive the miata in snow as well? If so, how does it handle?

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  4 роки тому

      I did not drive the ND in the snow, but years back I had an NB with LSD which I daily drove even in the winter and it was actually amazing. Better than you'd expect. I did have 15" wheels with snow tires on that one, but it was just as good handling in the snow as it was in the dry or wet. I expect the ND to be as well! The most important thing for great snow performance and fun, in my opinion, in a rear-drive-car, is that it has to have the LSD.

    NO, today's factory paint is not water based, this is a common mistake. If you scratch your vehicle, and go to the dealer for a repaint, then, yes, they use water based paint because of emissions regulations. As a general rule, water based paint is only used for the base coat, (the color), clear coat is always thinner based.

    Xpel doesnt make their own films and Protex is essentially 'branding' their own warranty.... it seems like the claim process will be a nightmare. Lots of hoops to jump through and time wasted if and when the film fails...

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  6 років тому

      It is true that the warranty is exclusive to Protex. I haven't had to make a claim yet, but I feel pretty confident that Protex will take care of you if there was indeed a defect.
