Had a neighbour who had 3 deltas brand new. First in red, then white martini racing colours and then the last version in yellow. Always loved looking at them growing up. I bet he wished he'd kept them.
I'm a total ford fan and I love the escort cosworth, I mean look at it, it's beautiful, but to be fair the Delta is the ultimate rally slag of of the 80s, when they pulled the plug on group B the Delta was on it💯
I was lucky to drive a Delta Integrale when I was 19, as my uncle had one, what a machine, still in my opinion the best ever looking road car, pure rallye muscle👌👌👌
Fun Fact - The Integrale Evo 2 never entered a rally or won anything. Lancia's last WRC winning car was the Evo 1 in 1992 which was the last homologation model and it is actually the much better drivers car, it has a bigger turbo and its non cat, and it looks exactly the same as the Evo 2. Lancia Evo 1 owner here btw :)
Not quite, there were a few differences in looks, blue glass, smoothed roof rain runners, 16" wheels, high back seats. But yeah, the original evo was a bit more raw. Saying that when you de-cat the evo2, BWE chip, boost control set to 1.2 bar, FE springs, drilled and grooved discs the Evo2 is a lovely drive and its all a relatively cheap thing to do without spoiling the originality of the car.
@@anonymous_bot_bot the Evo 2 is a collectors item now and no longer driven and those mods while great for the drive are frowned upon by buyers now. I polybushed my suspension, added a bigger radiator for cooling and a different sump guard with cooling fins, a red cam cover like the Evo 2 and a few other oem+ mods to my Evo 1 and interested buyers told me to reverse them as they only wanted all original. It’s become a crazy buyers market for Integrales now.
Fun fact, Evo1 and Evo 2 are the same. Its just a Community thing. Evo 2 was never ever a Name by Lancia! Beside 16V cat engine, some other rainrails, Seats some other very little things, thats it! Fun Fact, all EVO Works cars was former non Evo Cars wich were converted...
As a huge rally fan, and someone who grew up watching the group B, and the group A etc, but also being a huge Ford fan chosing between them would be a nightmare lol but honestly it's the Delta for me. It's all about feeling connected to the car and road for me, rattles, smells, handling feel, gearbox, noise, I love it, give me that every day of the week. Like you it's about that raw feeling for me, all day Also those lines, that front end, the rear, the sides, it's impossibly beautiful from every angle, which almost no car is imo. That angle at 16:35 is perfect, box arches, everything is perfect on that car, and as time goes by it just gets better if you ask me. What a dream it would be to own that
“The Lancia just so much more, er......integrale (complete)!” Don’t think you’ll be upsetting many journalists with your verdict. Really nice piece. Thank you. I also shed a slight tear too. I loved my evo 1 as much as steffi Graf. I didn’t love the person that demolished it though.
and thats the right answer! The question itself, wich car is best of the two's , isnt hard. Of course the Ford is way better in all! In Engine, in aero, in durability and most important for a rally/streetcar in weight distribution! The Engine is longitudinal mounted and gearbox under dashboard. Whatevver, both cars nowdays or since the last 15 years are one way or another just for collectors, who have some fun with them in some small amount of miles per year, or just look at the car while it stands in the middle of the living room. My Evo i have, just couse its my dreamcar since i was 14 years old in 1997. 2001 it was my first car with 18 which i bought. Nowdays its way more fun for me to drive my Caterham CSR260.
Never forget looking through a Dutch version of Auto Trader some years ago. Thinking if only I had the money. The amount that you could save at the time on an Integrale was unbelievable
Living the dream, bro. I got the feels when you spoke about your old duvet cover 😊. Glad you got to drive these two beauties and share it with us. I’ve never driven either of them but I agree with you on the Lancia. 👍
The Integrale is a legend, there is no doubt about that. I have seen people who hate Italian cars loose their words after driving an Integrale. It is sad seeing Lancia reduced to a single model.
Such a superb video - thanks for making it! You're a very likeable chap too! What I find interesting is that another prominent car UA-camr (JayEmm on Cars) has also reviewed both and came to the opposite conclusion, that the Escort RS Cosworth was amazing and the Lancia over-rated. Each to their own I guess. Both are amazing, but I think I'd go with the Lancia Delta Integrale too.
I remember going to pick up a 6 box for my pug 306, somewhere in surrey and seeing a delta integrale sat in long grass under a tree...i asked the manager of the car place what the story with the delta was. The guy told me that someone had lapsed on paying for storage for a few years and didnt respond to any attempts at contact. I offered all the cash i could muster and to pay the lapsed storage costs...sadly i got a flat no, but i still got to feel that emotion of having touched a little bit of magic!
The Escort Cosworth is an Escort body stretched onto a shortened Sierra floor pan hence the engine being north south, not east west like a standard Escort. ( according to Stuart Turners book ) Small fact, the Escort also won its first rally also.
Great video !! My 82 UR Quattro with 450 bhp was a much better engineered and more precise machine than my 04 Evo 8 with 510bhp..... The UR was also better than both what you tested, by far!!! I've used them all.
i dont think so. The Ford was ahead of its time. The Ur is best example for audisteer. To heavy at Front. If you are just a numbers guy, and want go straight, ok go with the audi. But if you want to drive a realy good balanced Rally car, go with the Ford! I had it all. Have a integrale Evo, in past Cosworth and Audi S2. The Lancia for me is the most emotional car. The Design is outstanding and the performance is good enough. But the Escort is unbeatble, the weight distribution and engine is simply to good.
I had a new Lancia Delta HFie Turbo at the start of the 90s - and having driven Integrales they drive very very similarly on the road but there is just something about the way the Lancias drive and feel, they're poised, balanced and you feel totally connected to the wheels, to the suspension and the steering, you just feel totally connected to the car, they live and breathe. I drive a Jag now, more comfortable, much bigger engine, more modern ... but if I could have a pristine Lancia Delta HF again, I'd make the switch without a second thought.
Agreed. The Delta HF Turbo was a truly excellent car. I did have to get the gear change linkage tightened on a regular basis, but apart from that it was quite perfect. And fast. Especially if you were a good driver. That's what it comes down to.
I remember trying to chose which one to buy. I took both on a test and I thought the evo had the edge. Then I took delivery of my skyline b99. Wow, that was a game changer.
Hi! Cheers from Chile. My chose: Delta...no doubt. 7 times World Rally Champion! No hard feelings with the Escort...inclusive I preffer 3 door cars, but Lancia is more fun to drive, the squares angles, .. the "charm". It´s biblic!

Appreciated the 80's music with the video. I'd take both.
With you on that choice, Intergrale all the way.. I think they were only available in LHD, correct me if I'm wrong 🤔 Beautifully engineered motor. 👏 Tickets bought 🤞
Great review , Lancia all day for me. I'm 49 and had some of the usual, xr2 xr3i mk 3 and my fave 2.8 capri . So I was a Ford person . But the Delta I knew was special when it appeared . It just seems so dialed in even today
Funny I've never really been a Ford man (Owning a couple of GTE's, Cavalier SRi's (8 & 16v) plus an Opel Manta). However, I always loved the Escort Cosworth. Always seemed to me to be a great package. Also knew a guy that had a Delta, stunning car and I would agree with you. Great review, can see how much of a genuine car guy you are.
I am 58yrs old I’m 1989 I started a business with my Father, in 1993 I wanted to change my Company Car from an Escort RS Turbo, so I ordered a RS Cosworth in Red, I was away on business when the dealership called asking me to collect as it was the end of there financial year, I asked my Father to collect it, on arriving home he had taken it to Ireland for a week 😂leaving me his a Vauxhall Senator 3.0i he loved driving it
Brother asking me to choose between a cosworth ( my favourite poster car as a child ) vrs the Lancia ( sega rally go to ) is a harsh as saying Choose between Lisa Ann and Kendra lust …….. ultimately the only choice is to want them both - great video loving the channel keep it up 👍
Always use to pick the Lancia on sega rally and feel I'd have to choose it over the cosworth if given the chance but lets be honest, you wouldnt be disheartened having either car!! 👌
The Delta featured has had the short shifter fitted. The integrale was the most fun car I ever drove. Lotus Elise came a close second but its a bit harsh for an everyday car.
Ford developed the Escort Cosworth around the chassis and mechanicals of the Sierra Cosworth, to accommodate the larger Cosworth engine and transmission, while clothing it in Escort body panels to make it resemble the standard Mk 5 Ford Escort, although the front doors and roof are the only bodyshell elements that are actually interchangeable.
and thats why the Ford is the best 4wd Rally car in my eyes, and i say that as a Lancia guy since day one ;-) The Ford is all in! There are so many good details in this car, which i like.
These cars were indeed something special. The Escort is affordably to recreate. Just take an good old Escort mk5 and put a modern 2L turbo engine out of a wrecked car into it. Yes you need to forget the Sierra underpinnings and the bulged flares. As you have to do with a Lancia Delta. But a good normal Delta is much more difficult to find.
nope, the engine tunnel is complete different in the cosworth. All Escort MK5 Engines are transverse. Only the Cosworth is longitudinal. So the whole car is very much different, and thats why the car is so good and special!
What a great video hats off chaps I agree 100% lancia delta evo what a car I had one and it’s just stunning always gets attention even parked up looked like it was going fast 😂 I just wish I never sold mine 😢
Para verlos en carrera el Lancia sin duda pero para tener uno el cosworth, no me quiero ni imaginar lo que cuesta mantener un Lancia de esos para uso intensivo.

I like both of these naturally, but the Lancia draws my eye relentlessly. Any vehicle of that vintage, especially if driven properly, should rattle, and harder than a child's toy. You also mentioned the seating material, which in a rally/sports car is called upon to give more than comfort, it must ensure that the driver is secured firmly. In its full rally guise, the leather shouldn't have mattered due to the racing harness. Somehow, a lap sash belt doesn't do the trick.
Lancia all day long for me. An honest journalist car review, thank you.
The Lancia is just stunning. Love old Fords but the Lancia has true pedigree winning so may titles. To have that on my drive would be unreal.
Best get yourself a few entries 👏🏼
Would be sacrilege to leave that on a driveway 😂
That needs to be in a heated garage

And Audi quattro S1!
But for me, LANCIA Integrale!
A true car guy. Tearing up talking about his WRC childhood duvet set. Doesn't get "realer" than that.
I owned an Integrale EVO 2 for 18 years, an unbelievable machine. So capable even in modern times. Phenomenal!
I own an Evo II and a T34 Escort Cosworth. The Escort takes it hands down for fun. The Evo for the glamour.
Lucky man, special collection to have both!
