    The cost of sheet material is spiralling the world over! I was doing a DIY project a couple of months ago and I needed 2 sheets of 12mm (1/2") plywood, 2400x1200 (8'x4') and it was £97 delivered ($117USD or $151CAD) - I nearly had a heart attack!! I'm not a professional and hadn't purchased any timber or sheet material for about 5 or 6 years... The price increases are making it practically impossible for home projects on a budget!
    Videos like this are great for people like myself who have a bit of skill and knowledge but don't have big budgets for DIY projects.
    Also, your editing skills are great - I know how much effort goes into creating content for UA-cam! Your efforts are appreciated by many 👍🏼👌🏼

    Hi Shannon . Thank goodness for you . This is amazing . Single lady novice here attempting to self build shed . Demolished old one and been having sleepless nights trying to work out how to do floor . Great video Shannon!! Another way to save money here, is to just take your neighbors when he goes on vacation (the one he's been going on and on and on about. Also, won't shut up about how much money he has). Not that I HAVE DONE THIS 😶! I just heard about it through a friend of a friend. Of a friend.

    Great idea. I’m going to make one like that with a small gap between each 2X6 for air flow because I have a shed that I store bagged wood pellets for home heating and typically a couple of bags on the bottom course on the existing plastic floor will absorb some moisture ruining them. This will elevate them off the floor and help circulate air around them.

    Nice solid floor and because you figured the costs, not a big expense.

    I did this, but boxed with a 2x4 on the ends of the 4x4. Then inside the boxed area I filled with 1 1/2” sewer rock, then attached the 2x6’s. To say this floor is solid would be a huge under statement!

  • @twig3288
    @twig3288 2 роки тому +4

    You could have used 2x4 for the center rail.
    Having said that you could have used 2x4s for all three rails.

    I just paid 47.88 a sheet for 3/4 inch t&g osb....that is less than half of what it was last year lol...at 15 sheets for my floor I am thankful for the drop. What is your suggestion on fasteners? Ring shank or screws for the osb?

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  2 роки тому +1

      Screws, but the ring shank is fine if that's what you have

    I like this idea as a single female with a future shed build. It lowers the overall weight by using individual boards. This way I don't have to wait for help in lifting.

    I see some water sneaking into the garage. I've had great luck with a rail/seal system called "ThermoTraks", in case it helps. Enjoy the rain! :)

    Hey Sheldon, do you have any videos coming up showing how to build a privacy wall on an existing deck. We don’t have any railings and I’m not sure how to attach the 4x4 posts before doing the frame.

  • @MrClarkisgod
    @MrClarkisgod 2 роки тому +2

    A guy paid me to tear down his old deck and build a brand new one. I kept all the old 2x12s, the 5/4 deck boards, and all the extra decent new pieces (he said I could). I build the floor and 90% of the framing with all that lumber. I bought a little bit of wood and the rest was pallets, reclaimed windows and door hardware. The only thing I really spend money on was asphalt shingles and oil based finish for the outside. Maybe $200 for a 16 ft by 8ft shed.

    Ahhh good idea you had on the build, that's smart. how did you set the foundation and stabilize the shed? One time I thought I'd save on deck balusters, so I bought 2x12s and ripped my own. Bad idea because they all ended up warping to the point I had to go buy new ones.

    It looks like the 4x4 is screwed down into a piece of MDF...or is that used just for spacing? Are the 4x4 pressure treated for exterior use?

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  2 роки тому +1

      The plywood between is just for quick easy spacing during framing and yes the 4x4s are PT because they are in contact with the ground.

  • @humungus3
    @humungus3 2 роки тому +1

    So the two rails are 4x4? and the central beam is a 2x6? So it doesnt actually touch the ground when it's set up? If that is the case case how does it prevent sagging?

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  2 роки тому +1

      The strength of the 2x6s plus the 2x6 runner distributes the weight better across multiple boards. Like I mentioned if you were parking lawn tractors or motorcycles you may need a centre 4x4 .

    You can also check the clearance rack at your plywood store like Robert Bury. They often have 4x8 damaged sheets of plywood for 50% off or less. It’s weirs to install 3/4 red oak plywood for subfloor but if it’s $65 a sheet why not. Red oak isn’t considered a pretty wood anymore anyway.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c Рік тому

      Several years ago the old sawmill in town had what they called "Blown" plywood....it was 4x8 sheets of 1/2 inch plywood but had been sent through the saw slightly off square....no big deal that's an easy fix for a homeowner, simply squared up the sheets with a circular saw, and used it for sheathing...roof is still there, and still hasn't fallen apart after 25 years. I probably still have a few leftover pieces around. I think the mill sold each sheet for $2. Wish I would have known back then what the prices would be now for much lower quality plywood I would have bought all they had LOL. Sadly the mill closed down about 10 years ago.

    Hi, I've heard of clamping cauls however am not familiar for cauls lumber?

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  2 роки тому +3

      I believe it is "culled" lumber. Basically a term for removing lumber that has defects from stock and then this company resells it at a discount (usually at auction)

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c Рік тому

      @@HouseImprovements That would be correct. Surprised anyone around you does that...the box stores (Lowes & Home Depot) in the US never do anything like that, they'll charge you the same price for it regardless, and most of their lumber is trash from the beginning...I now go to my local lumber yard, same prices much better quality materials, and if they don't have it, they order it and most times have it the next day, or in 3 days max....and I'd rather support my local small town lumber yard and hardware store any day...they also deliver for free if you have a larger order.

      Trying to avoid using 3 4x4s . The 2x6 floor planks will have no problem with the walls cantilevered out that far. right now another 12' 4x4 is $40
