Hey man, I was looking for a simple video. I'm planning on installing tool shed floor. As a woman, this video is too easy to follow. I appreciate you and the time you took in putting this up. Awesome work.
😀I am a Novice and this was explained to were I could understand it. I will share a picture when I am finished. Thank you for teaching this for people who want to learn it correctly.
Perfect, I'm glad to hear it! That was my ultimate goal, for literally anybody to pick it up and tackle it. I can't wait to see it, good luck on yours!
First time building a shed. I followed your instructions. Took me about 5 hours to build the floor. Mainly because I was off square by 2 inches. Took me a while, I had to drill the frame to the 4x4 on one side and kick the bottom until my numbers were at 153 inch on each corner. After squaring the frame it was down hill and easy. Walls coming up soon. I watch your videos several times before starting this project. Thank you.
That's awesome, good to hear it! Yeah it can take some time but it all starts with the floor. I'm pumped your giving it a go and that I could help. Good luck on the rest and keep posted! I'd love to see it when its done

I built a storage shed following your tutorial 18 months ago with painted OSB walls. I'm in Scotland where our climate can be really wet and my shed is as good as the day I built it. Say "No" to the nay-sayers about using painted OSB... it's as good as timber. Great tutorial by the way, many thanks.

I want to thank you for making this video series. I've watched tons of other "how to" videos on building, and none of them really helped me. That's awesome and so good to hear! I'm glad I could gelp and pumped you made it. Mistakes are part of learning. Thanks so much for sharing and yeah, you can't post certain things in the comments.
I’ve been a welder, grinder, and fabricator for 25 years building custom stainless pressure vessels. I had hell trying to get my foundation level because my backyard has an uneven 15 degree slope. I got my foundation level and the subfloor turned out great. I did have to use a few shingles to slightly shim under the 4X4’s to blocks for perfect level. My tank building skills is what helped me get through this 1st part of my 8X10 shed project. I appreciate your help by making these videos. The walls and roof should go pretty smoothly. Thanks.

Mice love this design. Nice warm place underneath. :D I do love it. It's even easier than my last free standing shed. Another option (which I did on my last free standing deck for my gazebo), is to dig a good sized hole (1.5 to 2' should do it) in the middle of the joists (right before laying the floor) and throw a sawed off post in there with some concrete. Throw a bunch of screws in it to attach it to your joists. That shed won't move in anything short of tornado directly hitting it. For an all wood shed.. probably not needed, but works great for a free standing deck or if you plan to put a big box 'plastic' shed on the base.
Thanks for the DIY floor base build a shed video. I will be building a floating base for Duramax 7x7 shed this Spring for a neighbor. After watching your video, I know exactly how to do it! Thanks Jesse !
Thanks to your videos I just realized what confused me for such a long time even though I am a woodworker. There is a minor difference in describing spacing which makes a big change on the outcome. *CENTER ON 16 is not the same as CENTER EVERY 16*, when I write it down it's clear as day and yet somehow it took such a long time for it to sink. Center on 16 is making sure the center is on an EXACT measurement (16, 32, 48..) and center every 16 (or any other number) is the spacing between centers. I feel dumb and enlightened at the same time, thank you.
Hey Tom! Haha well I'm glad I could make the light bulb go on for you! I love those moments when you're so close to figuring something out and can't quite get that last detail, but when you do everything just falls into place, it's so satisfying to know.
Hey my friend! I have searched for a lot of videos to help with ideas or ways to build a small shed! I am currently attempting to build an 10x8, and I am using my old patio floor lol, I’m a auto technician not a builder, but this video is one of the best videos I have come across. Good picture, great explanation, great directions, perfect instructions !! Thank you very much !
Hey man! That's awesome, I'm glad you found it useful! Your shed will be the same size as mine so it should be pretty easy to follow. Give it a go, I can't wait to see it, keep me posted! Good luck!
Just bought my first house so building a shed was a must and found this video very helpful. I'm in networking by trade so I'm nowhere close to a carpenter lol
Thank you so much for the videos in this series. After watching all of them, I feel very confident I will be able of build my storage shed this Summer. Thank you for generously sharing all the information and at no charge. I've personally watched some other shed build videos with information intentionally left out in order to force you to buy the plans or an e-book. Your instructions are clear and concise and did I mention "free"🤣. Now, if you could only do something about the lumber prices in the United States.🤣🤣 Off to build my shed. Cheers!
Anytime! I'm just happy to help and inspire people. I don't believe in forcing people to buy plans. If they want to (when I have them lol) that's great, but you shouldn't be edged to them. Oh trust me, the prices are just as insane up here in Canada too 😆. Good luck on your shed! Any questions feel free to email me, otherwise if love too see it when it's done!
I am thinking about using the treated wood from my fence that I'm about to replace to build a shed and a deck. This video is really helpful. I will watch the rest in the series. Thanks!
My Dad and I built a shed when i was a teen. All we did was level the ground. Dug down 3 feet below frost line poured in our concrete mix with anchor bolts. Next weekend popped in the seals and floor. By noon she'll and roof was in and night fall had walls n doors secured. 40 something years later that she'd is still there in use. KISS - keep it simple last word i don't use on folks. Just on decisions folk make.
I'll use deck blocks to have a level base in my case. I'm using a plastic shed on top, so it's going to be less involved, but your video is awesome and gave me a ton of very useful tips.
@@JessedoesDIY it made me rethink my approach. I was planning to go with deck blocks and only 2x4's, but I already see a problem with it (8x8 foundation for a 7x7 shed) - lack of joists. Ground has a slope to it so most likely, going with 4x4s as a flat base on deck blocks and then building the frame on top of this is the way to go.
My old man once told me you can always use a finishing nail gun (2" or less) to pin boards in place so they don't move while you are screwing, nailing, cutting, etc.
really enjoy your videos. your explanations are very clear and easy to understand and the video work itself is very well done, really easy to watch. waiting for the rest of this series! thinking of doing this myself this summer.
Best explanation video out there, I am going to follow it. Simple question, I'm a rookie, so bear with me ! When you are measuring your joist frame for square (diagonals), I am unclear how to adjust it for square if you have already nailed or screwed it together, making it a fixed structure ? (I have never done this so I may be missing a simple concept). Thanks very much !
Thanks, I'm glad I could help! So once it is all assembled and just framed, without sheeting on it especially, it can still rack from side to side a couple inches. So even though it is not coming apart, it can still move around a bit. Hope that helps, if you have any more questions just ask! Thanks for watching
Actually yeah, that is ok. This shed is considered rough carpentry and the rule of thumb is something can be actually 1/4" out. You can make that up in other areas with a little pull here or a push there, maybe even tweaking a cut, so by the time it is standing and finished you'd never know anyways.
Wow. AWESOME TUTORIAL. You made everything easy to understand. I'm building this shed as soon as I finish a chicken coop I'm currently building. I WISH I'D FOUND THIS VIDEO SOONER. I'll be sharing your channel with all of my DIY carpentry and building buddies. THANKS .
Hey thanks! I try to make it so anyone can build it, glad I could help. I'm actually in the process of a second shed series literally right now, hopefully the videos will start rolling out next week. Thanks for sharing, I appreciate it and good luck on the chicken coop!
Anyone have a husband that gets everything 90% done then moves to something else. I'm so overwhelmed with unfinished projects around my house I'm ready to scream. I have a leak in the roof and he is building a deck. Wtf.
Man... you make it look so easy. I can build cabinets and furniture but rough carpentery/construction intimidates me for some reason! I am curious if you're going to release basic plans and numbers for this building because a 12x8 shed is what I'm shooting for however the vertical dimensions is exactly what I want.
Lol thanks. But don't let it intimidate you. I love doing finer things myself, but sometimes I just have to do a rough build because it's fun. Once you get a few basic rules into your head for it, you can almost shut half your brain power down, go head down and just hammer it out. And at the end of it you have a big structure which feels really satisfying when you stand back and take it all in. I have been adding the materials for each video down in the descriptions and I would love to release a plan for it, but I'm still learning how to do all that stuff and I'm not sure when I could. But as soon as I can you can bet I'll be adding them later. For now you can take what I did, and because it's still exactly 2 feet wider than mine, the math is super easy. If you need a reference just stretch a tape measure out and count all your 16" marks up to 12'. That tells you how many floor, wall and roof studs you'll need. The design of this shed is very scaleable in that regard. Even your OSB will line up perfectly, I was cutting off 2' from mine because I needed 10', which is 2.5 sheets. You can literally get away with 3 sheets front, back and roof without cutting. Easy peasy. Good luck, let me know how it goes. Any questions feel free to email me
What people FAIL to realize is, Building a Shed Cost ABOUT Half Or Less than Buying One... EXAMPLE ONLY! Buy a 8x10 Shed for $5,000 and by the time you pay it off, you spent About $10,000.. Or Do like He did here and What I did, I BUILT a 10x10 For Under $1,000.
@@bf7504 No Plans. Built it how I felt it needed to be built. Been Holding up for over 13yrs now. Still looks new. Back Wall is 7ft Front Wall is 8ft. 2x4 "Rafters" every 18in or what ever the grooves in the Metal Roof are..
Beautiful. Good work. Thank you. I loved how you showed the crown on camera, it looked as if I am looking at it with my eyes not on camera. I could really see the crown. Amazing.
Thanks! I'm glad I could help. Yeah, I figured that since the crown is really obvious all the time I'd show it so you know what to look for. Glad it worked out
This is let’s rally the best video I’ve ever watched, so much details, I’ve been trying to figure out the spacing between to woods for months, the whole video was informative, im going to build a tiny house, wish me luck😅
Thanks for those helpful tips and precise instructions… I just built my shed foundation watching your video multiple times… you are awesome…I did replace the osb with pressure treated plywood..
GREAT tutorial here and I much appreciate the attention to detail with screw sizes, lining this up to that, etc. SUPER helpful. Helpful note for anyone who's thinking about getting into this. DO NOT underestimate the amount of work necessary to level uneven ground. My yard is all sorts of fucked up and I spent a good 8-10 hours getting the concrete blocks leveled and lined up correctly while keeping the whole thing square. I am a complete novice, so you might do better.. but just be aware.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you found it useful, I tried to be as clear and concise on everything I knew I'd get questions on if I didn't lol. That's a good point on the ground leveling. I live in the central prairies in Canada so it's super flat here, I dint have to worry about that too much but I should have at least commented on it because it's the base for the whole shed. Thanks for sharing, I hope to see your project when you're done!
Very informative and he knows his stuff. I've been working for myself remodeling houses for 20 years and I learned something new from watching this video.💪🤙
@@JessedoesDIY ,I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't know this but for giggles I will tell you. It was the toenail trick , where you spin it a couple of times before angling the screw. It's not often you need to screw like this unless you do a lot of shop work like building furniture and cabinets etc.
Even when framing walls ,I build the wall on the ground and then stand it up so there isn't any need of toenailing studs. Like I said I don't have to do it often but when I do the drill has skipped and got my hand a couple times , with your trick I'll never have to worry about that again.
@@JessedoesDIY , It's going to do just that. Even though I know how to do everything from the block to the finish surfaces,I can still appreciate the fact that you take the time out of your life to make these videos that help people. Big ups dude 🤘💪
Dude! that trick using your speed square on the side of your circular saw to make a perfect square cut was awesome!!! Your going to make a lot of builders upset if you keep giving away their secrets. LOL :-) Great video!
Thanks, glad you liked it! Lol well that's their problem, nothing here is secret and the more tips and tricks I can share, the better for the average person it is. Plus I like the idea of showing people the whole process and if they want to try it, perfect! But even if they realize it's too much for them, this way they know what they are paying for when they hire somebody and what to look for.
Hi your video is easy to follow , I will use your system but want 4 by 4s all around , my shed has to be mobile so I will put heavy duty casters every 4 feet, no tornados here. Canada was forced to go metric but all building and tape measures and squares still use inches and feet...no body likes metric ..Thanks Gov for forcing it on us..NOT! You are a great teacher and now I will start that shed project I have been wanting to do for years. All the best to you.
Thanks, glad I could help! Just make sure there is an air gap below the floor and ground, that's why I didn't put 4x4 all the way around, it left air channels so the floor can breathe. I like metric lol but all our building materials here aren't and my largest audience is in the U.S. Good luck on your shed!
@@JessedoesDIY Hi again, I was in school when we switched to metric so I am old school, as for the shed as I said it will be on rolling heavy duty lockable castors so there will always be an an air space under it. I hope to get it done this spring. All the best to you, keep posting!
I appreciate clear and certain directions with resons included. I'm rebuilding a shed floor so I'll have to decide to either jack the shed up, prep base and somehow slide the floor beneath vs building the floor under the shed?
No problem, I'm glad I could help. Ooof, that's not a fun job. Either way will be a chore, but without seeing it, it's hard to say. Good luck on the project
I thought it would be easier but it seemed more math than I am good at. I’m trying to build a few sheds for my stuff in my house. And your shed is so beautiful!!! Thank you for sharing. I will definitely take pics if I ever get mine done right🤙🏽
It's not overly difficult, but there is definitely a lot of pre planning and things to be aware of. I do have super detailed plans available if you want. All the materials, fasteners, lists, measurements, pictures, and descriptions you'll need...if you want. Good luck on yours, can't wait to see it!
Sterling board or Oriented Strànd Board (OSB) has a light surface coating of resin so can take exposure to rain for a surprisingly long time. But eventually it will suffer so needs a protection. But its fine if you have rain during the contruction period. The sheets are factory made to high accuracy, much better than on site measurements, so you can use the sheets to square up the frames. Its best to use full sheets and cut your frames to the edge of the OSB rather than the other way round. This way you have completely square corners. I'd always insert insulation during the assembly rather than add it later. I suggest fitting thin boarding to the underside of the frame either by assembling it upside down and flipping it, or by dropping in narror panels between the joists. You can then fill the space with insulation before decking over.
Nope, just regular tongue and groove 3/4" OSB, much less expensive. Once the shed is assembled it will not be exposed or get wet. It all comes down to how the rest of the shed is assembled, the 4x4 skids keep it off the ground and allow for an air gap that keeps everything dry.
I did a 12×24 using 2×6 treated for the floor joists but it is supported every 4 or 5 feet along the spans & on one foot centers with a 3/4 " sheeting for the floor.
That's a great build. One thing you should consider is ventilation... You need a 2 to 3 inches between the floor and ground or trapped humidity will rot your beautiful work over time.
Dude, I am a retired bridge form carpenter/concrete finisher. That was the BEST tutorial I have ever seen. Great video for the DIYer.

Hey man! That's awesome, I'm glad you found it useful! Your shed will be the same size as mine so it should be pretty easy to follow. Give it a go, I can't wait to see it, keep me posted! Good luck!
crown up... probably the best advice you'll ever get
Yup
This is a real video "how to build" cz the others its just people building stuff in time lapse videos...they don't show to us how to do it.
Happy to help!
Underrated comment
Very helpful video for a novice like me who has never build a shed. Thank you!!
Awesome, glad it was helpful!
Great Video. Happy to report that I followed your instructions to build my shed. Every video in your series was very helpful. Thank you so much.
Oh awesome man, thanks! Glad I could help out
Echo: clear straight forward. One of the best I've listened too. You have a gift my friend.
Appreciate it!
Thank you so much for this. So helpful you wouldn’t believe it. Feel armed with the knowledge to build my base. Thanks from the uk!
Anytime, happy to help!
I too am about to purchase a shed. I’ve seen multiple vids on constructing the floor but yours by far is the easiest to follow. Thanks for sharing.
Anytime, happy to help
What a great video. Simple, clear best instructions I’ve watched. Thank you.
Thanks! Happy to help
Just bought my first house so building a shed was a must and found this video very helpful. I'm in networking by trade so I'm nowhere close to a carpenter lol
That's awesome, I'm glad I could help out! Now you'll learn some skills and have a shed to enjoy.
I like how you clear out how theres many ways to build a shed but this the way you will build yours. Good job bro.
Thanks, appreciate it. Glad you liked it
I am looking forward to seeing you finishing the walls and the roof. Thanks for sharing.
Coming soon. Thanks for watching
Hi Jesse, I just finished my son’s shed step 1 - floor . Thank for your clear instructions. Great video.
That's awesome, glad to hear it!
I'm working on copying your build with the exception of going 6ft deep instead of 8 due to space issues. You think I can skip the middle skid?
Cool! If you skip the middle skid I'd up the joist thickness to 2x6. Good luck on yours, keep me posted!
I am thinking about using the treated wood from my fence that I'm about to replace to build a shed and a deck. This video is really helpful. I will watch the rest in the series. Thanks!
Awesome! Good luck on your projects, glad I could help!
This video is just what I needed to build a base for my garden shed. Thanks very much for sharing.
Awesome, I'm glad I could help! Thanks for watching. Good luck on yours
Nice! Yeah would have liked to go down but my frost line is 6' deep, so I'd need a 9' deep hole, not do able
Very informational! Looking forward to the rest of the build!
Thanks
Me too, I am waiting..
I'm gonna copy the way you build the flooring of the shed you making...it looked so sturdy...thanks for this video man...
Awesome, glad to hear it. Good luck on yours and thanks for watching!
I'll use deck blocks to have a level base in my case. I'm using a plastic shed on top, so it's going to be less involved, but your video is awesome and gave me a ton of very useful tips.
Cool! Happy to help. Good luck on yours
Thanks for explaining details like how many screws/inch and crowning of boards. Haven't heard that mentioned before. 🙂
Anytime! All those things have merit on doing it correctly so it's worth saying
My old man once told me you can always use a finishing nail gun (2" or less) to pin boards in place so they don't move while you are screwing, nailing, cutting, etc.
Not actually a bad idea
Thank you bro best teacher on this youtube for building sheds..
I have to build a floor for my kit shed. I'm feeling overwhelmed until I read comments like yours. Yall gave me hope 😂 ❤
Thanks man, appreciate it!
You can do it!
What an awesome video! Thank you so much for this!! Plan on building a shed soon and will 100% be rewatching this when the time comes
Thanks! That's awesome, I'm glad I could help. Good luck on yours and keep me posted!
Thanks I’ll be building this in winter time here. I’ll watch this maybe 8 more times. Awesome job
That's awesome! Glad I could help. Good luck on it, and keep me posted!
really enjoy your videos. your explanations are very clear and easy to understand and the video work itself is very well done, really easy to watch. waiting for the rest of this series! thinking of doing this myself this summer.
Thanks, I appreciate that! I'm happy to help and glad it comes out that way. I'd love to see it when you're done
You can also use some flooring glue as well on your floor joists to help that plywood sit better.
You could yup
Is there any tolerance in the diagonal measurement? I am 1/4” out by on my 7x6”” shed frame 😀
Actually yeah, that is ok. This shed is considered rough carpentry and the rule of thumb is something can be actually 1/4" out. You can make that up in other areas with a little pull here or a push there, maybe even tweaking a cut, so by the time it is standing and finished you'd never know anyways.
@@JessedoesDIY thank you 😊
Wtf.
Lol, my old man is like that. He's gotten better with age for sure...love him to death going to be starting a mini house soon
Guilty as charged…though I’ve been better since Covid. I got to finish all my projects during lockdown
You sound JUST like my wife.
That's every construction worker that ever lived, except for the finish carpenter
Your husband sounds like he’s got ADD, I’m the same way and have a prescription for ADD. Get him some Adderall
love the finishing touch of blowing the sawdust under the fence into the neighbour's garden
Lol there is no garden in any yard around me
Man... you make it look so easy.
Any questions feel free to email me
Bro built mine this week followed the vid and came out pretty good! Thanks bro
Great to hear!
Do you have plans
@@bf7504 No Plans. Built it how I felt it needed to be built. Been Holding up for over 13yrs now. Still looks new. Back Wall is 7ft Front Wall is 8ft. 2x4 "Rafters" every 18in or what ever the grooves in the Metal Roof are..
I just recently finished building mine and all I need now is power to it so gotta learn how to do that 😁
Awesome, good to hear! Good luck on the rest
Beautiful. Good work.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it and that I could help! Good luck
Mate just stumbled across your build while looking to build my own shed.....brilliant, I'm copying you from England.
That's awesome! Well I'm glad you found it. Good luck on yours!
Thanks for those helpful tips and precise instructions… I just built my shed foundation watching your video multiple times… you are awesome…I did replace the osb with pressure treated plywood..
Thats awesome! I'm glad I could help out.
One of the best shed Build videos online. thanks a ton! using this style for mine
Awesome, thank you!
Very informative and he knows his stuff. I've been working for myself remodeling houses for 20 years and I learned something new from watching this video.💪🤙
Awesome, thanks! Glad I could help. And what was it you learned? lol just curious
Nice! Lol well I'm happy I could provide a tip to save your hands
Glad to see a video on how to build sheds for dummies
I wouldn't say dummies lol Just how to for everybody no matter the skill
Awesome thank you! Did some carpentry work last year and having that knowledge. This is super easy to know now.
Awesome, glad it was helpful!
This was a great tutorial I’m applying it this weekend when I do the floor for my shed. Thank you!
Thank you, glad to hear it. Good luck on yours
Didn’t know about the 16 and 32 inch mark intervals on the tape measure. Thanks! Big help. 👏👌💪
Anytime, happy to help!
I am definitely building this shed. Just a little bigger. Probably 12 x 16 if code permits. Thanks for posting. Very easy to follow.
That's awesome! Anytime, glad you liked it. Good luck on yours and keep me posted, email me some pics when you're done!
Phenomenal video! I just got a 10x8 metal shed and needed to build a base. Love how easy you made this
Thanks, glad you like it! Good luck on yours
The best explanation of how to build I've seen on facebook. Great video bro
Thanks, I appreciate it. Happy to help
Awesome! We'll good luck on it, keep me posted
Out of a gazzilion videos I found yours is the simplest and the best, subscribed
Perfect, glad to hear it! Welcome to the crew
Absolutely generous for the great video series.
Thanks, glad you like it!
Best Shed base that I have seen on UA-cam!🏆🏆🏆
Appreciate it!
Great job. Makes our lives a whole lot easier and inexpensive.
Thanks, happy to help!
Thank you, I am going to follow this video as I start to build my own shed.
Anytime, I'm glad I could help! Good luck on yours
Thank you so much much for making this very easy to understand brother. Keep up the good work, we need more good instructors like in this trade.
Thanks man, I appreciate it!
Awesome tutorial. I’ve been researching all the ways to DIY a shed foundation and so far I like this method the best. Thanks!
Thanks very much! I'm glad you liked it
Sterling board or Oriented Strànd Board (OSB) has a light surface coating of resin so can take exposure to rain for a surprisingly long time.
Thank you for this video, im installing my subfloor tomorrow. 1st time building anything out of wood
That's awesome, good luck! Keep me posted on your progress
@@JessedoesDIY The subfloor went together great with the assistance of your video. My shed has been on it for awile now fully loaded thanks again!
Awesome! Good to hear. Care to email me some pics so I can feature it?
@@JessedoesDIY yes i can do that!
Awesome
Thanks!
Awesome, appreciate it! Glad you liked it
starting @12:30 is that pressure treated plywood? (or some kind of special plywood for outdoor because it will expose to the rain/water)
Thank you for making this video, i was able to recreate the shed and i must say it’s easier than it seems!
Anytime, glad you found it useful!
I did a 12×24 using 2×6 treated for the floor joists but it is supported every 4 or 5 feet along the spans & on one foot centers with a 3/4 " sheeting for the floor.
Nice
I just learned a TON from this series. Thank you!
That's awesome. No problem, glad I could help
Thank you for making this video, I want to build exactly the same. Love the inspector at the end of the video.
Anytime, glad I could help! He's pretty great lol
That's a great build. One thing you should consider is ventilation... You need a 2 to 3 inches between the floor and ground or trapped humidity will rot your beautiful work over time.
That's the point of it being up on the beams on top of a rock, not gravel, base. The beams create the air gap, and the rock provides drainage
Thank you for this video I'm learning how to do it on my own thanks again
