I’d be careful with the Critical Duty’s. When I watch ballistic testing on them and read about them they are made for shooting through walls and barriers which means they could shoot straight through someone and hit an unintended target. Always do what you feel safe with but I’d go with the Critical Defense for the 1st mag and the Critical Duty in the backup mag because if you get in a situation that actually requires you to reload…it means you’re in a full blown shootout and now you likely have to shoot through barriers to stop the threat…but in the beginning of the gunfight there’s likely no barriers between you and the threat but there may be unintended targets around. The fluted rounds that you mention are not designed to expand. Just the opposite , they nearly always keep the shape. They increase wound cavities by achieving fluid displacement. Thanks.
Remember you are responsible when you shoot. FMJ ammo usually goes through its target (depending on what caliber your shooting) while most hollow points do not. I’m out of state and critical Defense is in all my weapons.

Wow - I moved out of Jersey in 1997. Nonetheless, I thought that ALL HP ammo was illegal in NJ. I’m glad I live in the free state of Florida now. Cheers and thank you for your informative video.
There is one grey area in NJ whereas yes you can have HP ammo in your home but cant use it in a ccw gun. So would using regular HP ammo in your home to stop a bad guy be still be illegal ? Serious question
This was a great topic for a video. The range I took my CCW course reviewed defense rounds for our carry guns, but I don’t think a lot of places do as a regular part of their curriculum. Every range should teach this, because there’s such a high chance of a full metal jacket round going right through the threat and could potentially hit someone. Personally I use Hornady defense rounds.
Your videos are very informative. I understand that if you have a LEOSA permit, you can carry hollow point ammo in your carry weapon. Have not been able to get a true answer to this.
I live in Philly Ave HATE going to NJ. I only go for Roger Wilco & my favorite Soul Food restaurant Corinne's Place. I feel out of place everything in over there.
Have you ever heard of anyone in NJ that has been involved in a self defense shooting charged with using unapproved ammo? The answer is "NO". Because the charge/law is so blatantly Unconstitutional the prosecution would rather drop the charges than risk losing the bad law in court. The same goes for Massachusetts, New York and California. The Unconstitutional charges are dismissed once it enters the courts. Read "Commonwealth of Massachusetts v. Dean F. Donnell" as a recent example. MA tried to charge a NH man for carrying a firearm without a MA permit into MA. The idiot MA prosecutor didn't drop the charges and continued on with it. The Judge essentially ruled "One's 2A rights don't stop being rights crossing a State border". The MA Prosecutor had their ass handed to them, and they didn't appeal the case to the next higher court..because they didn't want to lose their B.S. law.
This is very interesting. So I live in PA right next to NJ. So are you saying that if I were to get pulled over in NJ with a valid PA license to carry, i could appeal my case to the federal courts and they would support me?
@@hmack8937 Not exactly. But a good 2A lawyer (which I strongly suggest you retain if you encounter this problem) would cite MA Commonwealth vs Donnell. The NJ court would then have to decide if they will throw out the charges against you, or potentially have you appeal a guilty verdict to a higher court..and risk losing to you. Once you win in that higher court..the law itself will be rendered untenable. Because the fact remains..your Constitutional Rights don't cease to exist because you crossed a State Line. Does your right to attend worship in another State end at the NJ border? Your right to Free Speech?..The 2nd amendment is an equal participant in the Bill of Rights..and cannot be denied you just because you travel across a border to another State. There's a case going on right now in New York that will force NY and MA to honor reciprocity in this regard.
What the hell would you be carrying range ammo for in your concealed carry? As most of us should know, range ammo has much more penetration depth than hollow point does. The purpose of hollow point ammo is to increase stopping power, and containing penetration to the perpetrator, minimizing the danger of others nearby.
@@hmack8937 nope. But we have magazine limits and mandatory permitting for anything semi auto. Not to mention background checks for ammo. Which is a fucking joke
The best, better than any HPs out there: Lehigh/Underwood/Wilson Combat Xtreme Defenders, Ft. Scott TUIs, and G9 EHPs. While “EHP” stands for “external hollow-point,” they are solid copper, non-deformable, non-NJ-forbidden- “dum-dum” or “hollow-nose” rounds. All three of these rounds do NOT have a “hollow cavity at the tip,” and are NOT designed to and do NOT deform upon impact; they are thus legal to carry with a valid NJ PTC. *This is not legal advice.*
8:12 Note those extreme penetrators with the "X" do NOT expand like hollow points they're usually milled solid copper. They're penetrators not sure why this guy is claiming they expand like hollow points.
Didn't the instructors who did your qualification and your mandatory use of force training review the law on carry ammunition as well as the terminal ballistics of range ammo vs. ammo such as Hornady Critical Defense? If they didn't, shame on them. Thanks for the vid.
Check out the story of Roosevelt Twyne. A security guard who was arrested and charged with carrying hollow points. He had critical duty in his mag and they arrested him anyway. They eventually dropped the charges but he still had to go through that. Typical NJ.
That's the thing, they're undefined. The law allows you to have them in your home, and at the range, but the way it's written it's possession. In the case of a home intruder gunfight, you will most likely be raked over the coals by the district attorney, as it's not written that you can use them in a self defence situation.
NJ's laws are a$$ backwards. It's unsafe to carry FMJ ammo for both the CCW holder and bystanders. As a former law enforcement officer, I have carried several brands of semi-automatic on and off duty and several brands and styles of ammo including the banned Winchester Black Talons. I carry the Hornady Critical Defense however I also own Critical Duty. The lack of nickel plating on the Defense rounds was more about price and nickel shortages from what I was told. My Critical Duty is nickel plated. It's really more about the purpose of the round than the size of the barrel. However, barrel length always affects ballistics. Critical Duty is designed more for law enforcement who needs a round that is better for penetrating barricades and things like car door windshields etc. Critical defense is more designed for an off-duty LE or CCW holder who is using their weapon to get them out of a close situation without the need for barricade penetration. ^The polymer tip is mostly to keep material from loading the bullet and keeping it from expanding. Keep in mind all rounds can be unpredictable, and you are always responsible for every round that leaves your barrel.
Thank you for taking the time and doing the research, it answered some of my questions, when it came to hollow point. BTW Ramsey Outdoor has a hunting department, great place to purchase and great people too.
All of the PTC laws are ridiculous ! Running errands with my son, i had to remove my firearm 3 times and place in vehicle lock box. I had him wait outside of vehicle , such B.S. If a Firearm remains in holster there can be no accidents.
Really great video. Did a fine job of explaining. Alot of people think hollow point ammo is armor piercing.i don't believe it is .the armor piercing used to be called dum dums
It’s allowed just not for carry. Just for the home and range unfortunately. Its has been 2 years since Bruen. No case has been final yet. The cases have just been going up and down with no end in sight. 2 years going on 3. Meanwhile it took 2 weeks for the democrats to write a stupid law and pass it. Makes no sense.

Excellent video. I’m a former NJ resident, now living in the gun-loving state of PA. I’ve been telling students it’s illegal to carry HP in NJ, but thanks for informing me you can use in home defense. Lived in Hoboken for ten years and I visit every so often to hang out in NYC. Next trip, I gotta check out Ottamanelli’s. They didn’t exist when I lived there, I’m guessing they’re on Rt-17 in Paramus? I’ve only been to Guns For Hire in Totowa. Thanks for the heads up!
They are now on Route 4 in Paramus. Nice store and staff, except for Paul, who I believe is the owner.
@@bobm9927 Ok cool, I’m familiar with 4, bought my wife’s wedding ring at a diamond exchange down from Riverside Mall on Rt 4. Will definitely check them out.
Subscribed!! Great info. I too am trapped in the blue barrier of new jersey. We need more gun owners to get out and vote!
Thanks for the sub!
If we can’t use HP’s then but G9 external hp’s or underwood extreme defenders they do very similar damage in tissue and actually excel over HP’s through bone and hard barriers
The fluted rounds that you mention are not designed to expand. Just the opposite , they nearly always keep the shape. They increase wound cavities by achieving fluid displacement. Thanks.
Have to say i didn't know i can use HP ammo like HST for home defense. Thx for clarifying
I’m so glad I got out of that state and fortunately, landed in a very Pro2A state with Constitutional Carry.
Likewise! But how do I carry in New Jersey where my daughter lives?
unless you can get a federal gun permit your screwed
@@bernardconeghenhow do you apply for a federal gun permit?
Thanks for the clarification very helpful.
Great video, You have a new subscriber.
Remember you are responsible when you shoot. FMJ ammo usually goes through its target (depending on what caliber your shooting) while most hollow points do not. I’m out of state and critical Defense is in all my weapons.
I live I Pa and have been carrying Hornaday Critical Defense 45 acp in a Colt Combat Commander for the last 10 years. Since now I have my New Jersey permit, I don't have to change my magazines or my carry ammo when going back and forth...
I can buy and carry any type where i live and I use Critical Defense ii is a great performer.
GREAT VIDEO,, TO THE POINT AND VERY INFORMATIVE. THANK YOU!
Tools and Targets as well as the late great Paul Harrell have some of the best ammo test videos out there if anyone is interested.
Critical defense is high quality there are several videos showing how well it performs we prefer it although it is costly
Beware of speed loaders with the polymer-filled rounds. The one I have crushed the tips.
A note on Underwood. Most of their ammunition is loaded “hot”. Full power, heavy grained projo. Plus they offer +P and +P+.
Brother!!! Finally a Paramus Neighboor and a fellow CCW 2A friend!!!
Critical Defense 💯
It's hard to imagine you didn't know all this before you purchased your pistol or weren't told this when you did.
Been carrying Hornady mostly, occasionally fmj when I forget to swap my mags from the range. Great video, thanks Jay.
Glad you did your research. Stay Safe, Bergen County.
Thank you for the information. You never know in New Germany!
I have Critical defense on my carry weapons.
Jay, this was very helpful. Thank you very much. Do you recommend any of ammo you mentioned in the video over others?
@@wxfield thank you for this. It makes perfect sense.
Correction : Underwood that you referred to will NOT expand ever …. It creates a lot of hydrostatic shock but will not expand
What the hell would you be carrying range ammo for in your concealed carry? As most of us should know, range ammo has much more penetration depth than hollow point does. The purpose of hollow point ammo is to increase stopping power, and containing penetration to the perpetrator, minimizing the danger of others nearby.
lol he just didn’t know bro. Don’t beat the man up. Nobody is born omnipotent and all-knowing.
Hey brother watching from New York and in the same boat
Hollows are illegal in NY?
@@hmack8937 nope. But we have magazine limits and mandatory permitting for anything semi auto. Not to mention background checks for ammo. Which is a fucking joke
Self defense ammo is designed to dump all of its energy as soon as it hits a fleshy target to minimize over penetration.
Got a suggestion brother, move to florida! Lol I'm originally from NJ keep up the good work!!
One day! Thanks for watching!
thank you for the info. live close to ottomanellis myself. good to know there are like minded people are close!
This was very helpful thank you brother, I carry the Hornady Critical Defense. I am also local to Ottomanelli's 😀
Good thing you realized range ammo is a terrible choice for self defense!
😂
Check out the story of Roosevelt Twyne. A security guard who was arrested and charged with carrying hollow points. He had critical duty in his mag and they arrested him anyway. They eventually dropped the charges but he still had to go through that. Typical NJ.
Awesome. Didn’t realize hollow points were an option for home defense.
That's the thing, they're undefined. The law allows you to have them in your home, and at the range, but the way it's written it's possession. In the case of a home intruder gunfight, you will most likely be raked over the coals by the district attorney, as it's not written that you can use them in a self defence situation.
These laws are crazy. Sounds like they made it up as they went along and didn’t actually think about it in a real world context.
Speer Gold Dot in NJ under HR218
Thank you for taking the time and doing the research, it answered some of my questions, when it came to hollow point. BTW Ramsey Outdoor has a hunting department, great place to purchase and great people too.
All of the PTC laws are ridiculous ! Running errands with my son, i had to remove my firearm 3 times and place in vehicle lock box. I had him wait outside of vehicle , such B.S. If a Firearm remains in holster there can be no accidents.
Thanks
Really great video. Did a fine job of explaining. Alot of people think hollow point ammo is armor piercing.i don't believe it is .the armor piercing used to be called dum dums
Had to subscribe I own a firearm and currently want my ccw good to know certain things especially in my state “ New Jersey “
Great Video Jay thanks for the information. Here is my question being new to the CCW how often do you change you carry ammunition?
Great video! So crazy that hollow point ammo is not allowed in NJ. Doesn't surprise me. Born and raised in Essex count glad I'm out of there
It’s allowed just not for carry. Just for the home and range unfortunately. Its has been 2 years since Bruen. No case has been final yet. The cases have just been going up and down with no end in sight. 2 years going on 3. Meanwhile it took 2 weeks for the democrats to write a stupid law and pass it. Makes no sense.
@@Chiefpoke what did you expect from them? They all anti 2A.
Great info …I carry critical defense
The best option. Move out of NJ. I would never in my life live in a blue state. Always solid RED, thank God. I love my state. 🇺🇸
How is that helping the cause?
or just stay and fight.
NJ is cobalt blue. Every government agency, virtually every school board, high school principal, superintendent, police chief, everything from the town librarian to the sate senate is deep, deep blue. The state workers look at you like your only purpose is to pay taxes to fund their pensions and salaries.
Good
I have a FFL collector of curios and relic license. I can definitely carry hollow points in NJ non resident?
...you've got a new subscriber...and my condolences..
How about any ammo you want to?
I live in NJ and carry ammo 12G, 556 and 9m. Why? Plenty out there to pick!
I happen to have critical duty in my home defense fire arm. Could I use that for home defense in NJ, without worry of being accused of using hollow point ammo in a home defense situation?
Brother if you think jersey is bad come on up to Massachusetts
I hope our governor isn’t watching. She sucks !
