I met Chip when we were 7 & 6 years old. BFF- baseball, football, golf, cards, board games, same college, sharing joys/losses. He best at gin,Stratego,Chess,Backgammon,Spades,Hearts, Bridge,Euchre,Pinnocle,Fish. He ran a kids casino out of his garage on Brandwynne Ct. when his teacher-mother Sunny had in-service meetings. Smartest thing I ever did was to stop playing him for money when we were 11. He was one in a million, a true winner. MM CHS 70, DC 74
Yup. Consider this: Doyle says he never once saw Chip raise his voice in anger to an opponent. He was a total class act, extremely intelligent (Dartmouth grad, got into Stanford Law), fiercely competitive, generous to a fault (he would loan out money to lower level players all the time). If you're a poker player, he is someone to emulate!!
Also, here's what Doyle said about Chip: "Chip Reese has always given me more trouble than anybody. He's the only player that I have any apprehension about playing with. He's always held over me... I don't know... he just outplays me. I've played tight against him, I've played liberally, but no matter what I do it just seems like he beats me. It's gone on a long time so, consequently, I think he's the best player all around."
Great person, great player and questionably the biggest loss to poker. Hard for anyone to around anything for that long with success and still sound like this. RIP
Sympathetic guy. Probably one of the most underrated poker players. You never see him appear in top 10's of 'best poker players', yet most of the pros consider him to be the best cash/overall poker player who ever lived.
Chip said, "when you walk on the edge of the cliff, you get a better view from up there, us players like the fear and pain of possibly losing.....WOW, what a guy, there is only one chip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
An awesome player and an even better human being. He shunned the spotlight, but the spotlight always shone on him when he walked in a room. Even in the often cynical and egotistical world of poker, true greatness is readily recognized...
chip sounds like he could be CEO of any company. It wouldn't matter if business was shady or the most productive and legit one. He is the1 guy who would keep it together when things are going bad on a team when other teamates are losing composure.
tomkier3, Stu played in WSOPs where there are 90 donks and 10 good players. In tournaments, as the blinds go up, luck also plays a big role. Chip's been playing cash games where the blinds stay same and skill plays a bigger role. He won consistently in the big game against the BEST players for 20 years!
I have to agree. The fact that TV-poker exploded after Moneymaker won the Main Event shouldn't overshadow the fact that Chip Reese is probably the best overall player of all.He was good in the 80's or whatever (or at his best?) but the fact that he won the HORSE event last year speaks volumes!
That feeling that having the pain of loss it also sets you straight It forces you to play disciplined poker and not to get carried away. It creates that drive of not playing to play. And the needing to get unstuck the feeling of wanting to make back what you’ve lost, God that Is hard to overcome.
Swineytodd17 , no doubt Stu Ungar was a great player but Stu never understood the elements of discipline, time management, bankroll management and especially personal growth. Stu found a drug habit and burnt out early and was begging on the streets 12 yrs after winning the 1981 WSOP main event. The players that stood the test of time learned from their mistakes and continued to prosper and for that Chip Reese gets the edge. I do agree with you may they both RIP.
Chip Reese consedred the best cash player ever. This is a much better status then being the greatest poker player( most say Unger) cause you are putting up your own money.
you def see him in top 10 lists ask any of them top guys they all say it he used to not get respect but after he died i think people started 2 rep him hard
I like it how they say playing poker for living is living on the edge--like its not living on the edge working in a job you dont like without security of finding a new job any time soon if you get fired.
One cold deck can end a heads-up match...but the definition of a "cold deck" depends a LOT on who is playing. If you put two 6's on the board, and one guy has 63 in the whole and the other K6...most people would consider that a cold deck and go broke. But a lot of pro's could probably get away from it. Another example is, of course, Doyle getting QQ against Chip's Kings, with undercards on the flop, and Doyle getting after making one bet and reading Chip's minraise correctly.
I would have to believe that part of the reason of his heart attack was probably from his poker life. The cause of death is not certain which is a little shaddy but from what the pro's say it was his heart since he had heart surgery not to long ago. All u can do is feel for his family. Forget poker just pray for his family.
To whoever is reading this, I wish you a long prosperous life and may you somehow muster up the genius to name your children something cooler than Chip Reese…
Sure, but did you see Reese at that table? He was very fatigue. He simply ran out of stamina and decided to gamble. It was probably the best chance he had at that point.
@Rvd420WHAT It's hilarious to watch High Stakes Poker & watch Phil spend so much time & energy trying to show the cash pros that he can win playing really bad cards. Other guys @ that table do it (Negreaneu, Farha) but THEY read the other great players really well and can get away from a hand when beat. Hellmuth--tho also the victim of some bad luck on that show--consistently fails 2 figure out what's going on until too late. He's great @ outplaying bad players in the tournament setting though.
@Rvd420WHAT: The televised tournament poker boom has made overnight legends out of lots of guys to the detriment of guys who didn't get their faces on TV playing tournaments. Many tournament pros ONLY play tournaments and so think of great players in that arena only. Sadly, this has influenced the non-playing public into believing that, say, Hellmuth is the "world's greatest poker player," while the cash game pros know him as the greatest one-trick pony ever. The educated know Chip was king!
I used to deal poker to this guy, my God what a true gentleman at the table, at all time.
I met Chip when we were 7 & 6 years old. BFF- baseball, football, golf, cards, board games, same college, sharing joys/losses. I hit the like button before video even started. A true legend.
I think I did too lol
@Camdyn Malakai yeah right
Yup. Consider this: Doyle says he never once saw Chip raise his voice in anger to an opponent. If you're a poker player, he is someone to emulate!!
Chip never raised his voice in anger to an opponent, nor to a dealer, a class act,,,
When he talks about "living on the edge"...man that rings so so true for me.
true legend, possibly best poker player ever
Great insight from the greatest poker player of all time. Nice post.
The HORSE heads up against Bloch was one of the most exciting matches I can remember. R.I.P. Chip.
Greatest? I think not.
This is absolutely a wonderful video
Also, here's what Doyle said about Chip: "Chip Reese has always given me more trouble than anybody. He's the only player that I have any apprehension about playing with. He's always held over me... One of the best high stakes mixed games players of all time.
Man this makes me realize how much I truly miss Chip, a real gentleman, a pro's pro, well "the" pro's pro, all time greatest literally.
Regarded by the best in the world as the best in the world. Gone too soon, but remembered forever.
I was shocked too. So sudden and so untimely. RIP, Chip Reese! You were the best.
Great person, great player and questionably the biggest loss to poker. Hard for anyone to around anything for that long with success and still sound like this. RIP

top 10's of 'best poker players' is a list of tourney players, which Chip hardly played
Chip said, "when you walk on the edge of the cliff, you get a better view from up there, us players like the fear and pain of possibly losing.....WOW, what a guy, there is only one chip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really wish there was more interviews of Chip out there on UA-cam!!!
Sadly theres not nearly enough
Brilliant player and a consummate gentleman. Pure class. RIP.
The best cash game player.RIP Chip.
chip sounds like he could be CEO of any company. It wouldn't matter if business was shady or the most productive and legit one. He is the1 guy who would keep it together when things are going bad on a team when other teamates are losing composure.

Great interview!
YOu really should hear what the guy has to say about the great game.
Words of wisdom Chip, thanks...RIP
One of the true Legends. Rest in Peace.
The Epitome of a Poker Professional
Definitely the epitome of a great poker player. Would've loved to watch him against some of the new unorthodox pros like Tom Dwan and Phil Galfond.

RIP CHIP REESE! LEGEND!
Awesome Player, Rest In Peace brother
i like this guy so much even if i dont know much about him.
Rest in Peace !
He's too articulate to be a professional poker player. Matusow and Hellmuth sound like they'd be driving a taxi if they weren't poker players.
prolly bc hes in a interview
That's why he was a winning gambler for decades in a town that eats up wannabes
Quinn Joel Dartmouth College grad.
premium advises imo...rockin' those Charlie's shirts
Best ever all the pros say even Doyle RIP 56 wow!
I never heard a bad word about Chip Reese....maybe Phil Helmuth should watch this video.

Great player.... A great loss for Poker...
RIP Chip
Chip was one of the best, no doubt. But Stuey was THE best! May they both RIP!

Stu Ungar was a great tournament player, average at best cash game player.
Like a better version of Scotty Nguyen.

The only man doyle brunson was scared of
And you know Doyle’s seen some shit
Stu Ungar?!

He died way too early. I mean people don't know how good player he was, but he was one of the best solid players of all time.
RIP.
RIP Chip
RIP Chip...
When people reference the “poker gods”...it’s just Chip Reese. True shit.
Chip Reese consedred the best cash player ever. This is a much better status then being the greatest poker player( most say Unger) cause you are putting up your own money.
Chip Reese vs Phil Ivey HU?!? I would love to see that..possible passing of the touch!
Wish I was born with such a practical natural gift...
Only thing I'm big in is getting sick and being lazy...
rip chip

Thats cause he rarely played tournaments so the avg. poker fan didn't know who he was.
@Rvd420WHAT: Amen!

He is just resting in peace finally, thats good enough.
