      Based on the high pace of parts of the video, and the relatively low popularity of 4K computer screens, I think moving to 60fps would be a better alternative.

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  8 років тому

      Funny you should mention that because I do use 60fps on the gopro footage. By recording and uploading the rest of these videos in 4K (when possible).... UA-cam gives me better bit rates when it scales the video footage down to 1080 for your screen :) Not my first rodeo :)

    Great review! That new tank and airbox setup is pretty wonky. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the WR 450f. It seems like it would solve almost all the problems you mentioned with this bike.

      +eveRide ADV WR450f is a fantastic bike. It's heavier and slower than the yz but it will still haul the mail. In my opinion its a great trail bike but not a race bike. Its really reliable and still has the great front forks you get with Yamaha's. You also get E start which is really nice for single track.

    Great vid, I'm a 4-stroke and a Yamaha guy...and this video was perfect. I was happy to watch this knowing that you weren't biased against either side. It's just as you said, it's a motocross bike...not an enduro...it's set up perfectly for a track, but not so much for the trails

    I’ve trailriding 2 strokes my whole life ,decided to pick up a 2016 yz450f for a steal was previously ran as an ama supercross bike and the 15 minutes I got to ride it ( since it’s cold as hell and the grounds frozen ) was just crazy , never ridden anything this big and was not expecting the power , I’m 300 lbs 6’3 and this thing pulls the wheel in every gear . Deffinately a handful and will hopefully get use to it coming spring and summer monthes , can’t wait

    Love your reviews, man. I just switched to two stroke from a 2012 WR450 that was pretty well modded. Went to a YZ250X. The WR is a beast and has a super fast motor, but that X is a masterpiece in anything technical compared to it. I keep checking out your channel to see if you get to review one. It's definitely the most well rounded bike I've ever had. Keep reviewing. I've bought quite a few products you've reviewed because of your detail.

    MX bike owner here. All I do is trail riding. Haven't been to a track....ever. Love my crf450r. Find it difficult in tight trails especially here in Florida where it's all sugar sand. Hard on the clutch especially since I have to play with it YET keep the power so the sugar sand doesn't eat me alive. Literally. The sand is deep and wants to swallow you whole in lower speeds. Ocala National forest seems to be the best place to open up a MX bike other than a track. Nice wide trails, long straights and lots of berms. Nothing tight. Very reminiscent of a track. Oh and about your comment in the video about needing that much power. I agree with you. The average MX rider doesn't need that much power let alone the average off road rider. Do we like it? Absolutely. I don't need the power to be fast but I sure do enjoy it. Great review.

  • @RuggedADV

    Good review. I don't want people to be mislead on how 450 four stokes like to stall easily. This is true with Motocross models but the enduro spec bikes have a lot more rotating mass with the starter gear assembly and the cam changes and less open exhaust make them flame out much less. With a powerbomb header and a few mods the 450 enduros are a tractor and quite hard to stall out.

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  8 років тому

      +EnduroRider NW This is true. These MX bikes are hard to keep running in the tricky stuff, but the WRs are much better in that regard.

    Awesome review Kyle,
    my buddy rides a yz450f and it seems to be a pretty awesome bike. He mentions similar likes and dislikes about the bike as he uses it to race as well as single track so I would say your review is spot on. OK, so the reason you should shoot me a shirt..#1 I really enjoy your channel and am always looking forward to the next video.
    #2 I'm always trolling the bike shops so it would be a great advertising opportunity.
    And lastly, I'm not proud I'll appeal for you pitty as for now I'm wrestling a 300 lb DR350. so an awesome light sleek DBC t shirt will make me feel lighter...lol
    Thanks for you videos, as always a great job.

    Really like your channel! I had a YZ450F setup for desert racing and preferred it over my 300xcw, it hooked up in the loose stuff instead of spinning the wheel and the gyro effect of the motor made it stable at high speed and over sand whoops. The new YZ450FX could be the best of both worlds!

  • @stansabick2700
    @stansabick2700 8 років тому

    i just picked up a 2014 YZ450f, the red and white one. I have to say that you are spot on with feeling like it wants to go straight. Once the revs are even slightly above idle, it takes some extra input to get the initial lean happening. Good tip about the starting it in neutral. I just asked around about why I only had to kick 2 times when it is cold, and once it is warmed up it takes 4-5 kicks. I realize now that it is probably because it is in gear. I have just ordered a skid plate, IMS 2.9 gal. tank, radiator guards, hand guards, and a kick stand. I am lucky that it came with a spark arrestor, and the suspension had already been revalved for off road riding. I have plans to get it a bit more ergonomically corrected, and a softer seat for the longer rides, because lets face it, the stocker is like a board. It will also have an eighteen inch rear soon. To solve the staling issues the original owner went down one tooth in the front sprocket. That makes this thing an arm puller for sure. I will also be picking up a GYTR power tuner to make a more woods friendly power delivery. I think if money were no object, one could add the items from the 2016 YZ450X to make this an electric start bike. I already wish i could find a cheap aftermarket way to install one. Thanks for the review, and validation that i think I made a good choice at a better price point than some other options.

    I use my 2019 YZ450FX for all around trail riding and desert racing. I like being able to use third gear from 0-50mph. It is fantastic for fast desert riding, I do not like it as much in tight, rocky stuff.

    2016 Dirt Bike of the year from two different reputable dirt magazines for SX/MX. Yes even over the KTM and the Kawi. Agreed that it is maybe not the best for off roading though. Many other bikes that might do better. Would love to see you gain access to the new YZ450FX. Would love to here your thoughts as it basically answers all your downsides to this bike with the exception of the fuel tank. Only downside I hear is weight. Did you use the Yamaha GTYR Tuner? Can tune it to give it different traits that might be better suited for the trail. The new YZ450Fs have quick connects to get to the air box so you no longer need tools.

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  8 років тому

      +mobgma I'd like to test out the YZ450FX. The only issue is that I have to buy all the bikes I review at this point. No one is loaning them to me, or giving me bikes. That makes it painfully slow to get new stuff to test.

    Another A++ on the review, I really like what you mentioned about the potential of the bike compared to the potential of the rider. Thats one thing thats always bugged me about every "shootout" article in every motorcycle magazine. They only tell us what pro riders think about the bike when pushed to the limit and not what joe blow thinks of it at an every day mans kinda pace. Hope you get to hop on a YZ250X soon, you just might think that blue is the new orange. ; b
    p.s. just an fyi on the video edit (a subject I know little to nothing about) but the DBC sprocket covers up the info you have pop up in the lower left corner.

    told you ..... :) :) :) Fi is GREAT !!! and if you think about auto clutch - GO FOR IT ! it's the best change i've done in my 2015 KX450! also softened/revalved the suspension, changed to slower gear ratio, put on an MX71Dunlop (110/90-19 ,didn't even go to 18" tire) rear,it's the narrowest i found,and great on rocks/hard. ) the bike is great for me now . the auto clutch changed everything for me,i'm a tall heavy 230lb. guy,not a good rider,and do only enduro and rocky gnarly single tracks. so i didn't mind sacrificing the top speed.you're right about the power ; it's too much. always. but 2strokes 250/300 are also. so if i get along,everyone can . i enjoy the great chassis and the confidence on the bike - which i never got on enduro bikes.but maybe it's just me,being tall/heavy

  • @tarded400
    @tarded400 8 років тому

    I agree almost unanimously. I bought my 14 for supermoto and it's the meanest nastiest motor I've ever ridden.
    As for the air box lid-I've never had any trouble getting mine to line up. Is the air filter cage fully seated into the throttle body? I also went onto Amazon and bought some 1/4 turn fasteners instead of buying the gytr kit. Works, but not as polished as the Yamaha kit.
    And being hard to start-are you using the hot start knob? mine is impossible to start warm/hot without it, but fires right up with it pulled out. It always takes 3 kicks to start cold- seems like it's charging the injection system or something.
    I've ridden mine once off-road before fitting slicks and that footage at 1:30 looks suicidal on this bike. Mine hurt me trying to do medium difficulty hill climbs. Couldn't move my clutch fingers for several minutes.

      All the KTMs I ride are steel frames. I'm not sure I'm a good enough rider to differentiate it since they will also have different suspension. That makes a bigger difference than the frame IMO.

    In my opinion, I think the stock bars on the yz are very low making harder to handle in the woods. I ride single track a ton and on my bike I run with woods high bars and found it to be a lot easier to handle. It is all about personal preference. I love the power and "snappieness# of the 450 in the woods.

    awesome bike, I had a rekluse clutch on my yz250f and i hated it. you would go up a hillclimb and if you stop the bike will go "out of gear" and run down the hill also, you can't use your gears as a break in the corners ext.

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  8 років тому +1

      +maniac & CO I look for one that's been taken care of. I look for how much wear there is on the side of the motor where your boots rub. I look for bent parts. I look at the frame under the bike for damage. I look for signs of oil on the outside of the motor. I look at the seals on the suspension. Some of those things can give you an idea of how it's been treated. I also look for a bike that was owned by an "older" person. Someone who is capable of taking care of a bike properly.

    Awesome video. I have one question for you. What do you think about the yamaha yz 250 2 stroke. Is it good for off road and enduro. I am a beginner so witch bike do you recommend for me.

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  8 років тому

      +enduro rider The YX250 is a great bike. They can make good enduro bikes with a few mods. They are fairly cheap on the used market to. If it's your first bike, though I might look for something with a little less power. Depends on how much you weigh though and how fit (strong) you are.

  • @EreksonJ
    @EreksonJ 8 років тому

    On the whole power topic: While I agree that the less powerful bikes definitely give me more confidence and ultimately, more speed in the tighter stuff, I have found situations where I have even wanted more power from my hopped up CR480, or my buddy's KX500. I'm specifically talking about dune riding and open desert riding - even with a paddle tire or fresh knobbie. I feel like I'd need 100+ horsepower in the sand before I ever lost my confidence to pin it up a giant dune.
    I think it just depends on the riding location. I do just enough dune riding that I'm totally happy with having too much power for other locations.

    • @dirtbikesam
      @dirtbikesam 8 років тому

      +EreksonJ yeah the sand really does suck your power!! I once rode an ATK 500 at the dunes and it was a blast but scary at the same time.

    Someday if you get around to it... I know I'm not the only one when I consider a used 2006 or newer YZ250 as a cheaper alternative to a KTM 300. They show up on KSL in decent condition for less than $3,000 pretty frequently. Eddie sanders racing even makes big bore kits fir them up to 350cc's if you want to make up for the power difference. I'd love to see a review comparison between the KTM and a used YZ. Is the YZ a good cheaper alternative? How good in comparison?

    • @dirtbikesam
      @dirtbikesam 8 років тому +1

      +EreksonJ The YZ is one of the best 2 strokes made. To be honest if we have talked about picking up a yz250 to see how it stacks up. I really think 2006 and later used yz250's are the all around best bang for your buck. Its a bike that pretty much will do well everywhere.

    • @DirtBikeChannel

      MX bikes are not great for trail riding unless you make some modifications. I'd look at lowering the gearing a bit and certainly softening the suspension. That will get you started.

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  8 років тому

      +Corey Hammond I'm partial to the 300 because I think it's the most versatile bike out there. The WR450 would be good to. If you are going to be riding it on the road (pavement), go for the WR. If you will stick to the bush, I'd look hard at the 300.

      I would suggest a few simple low cost things that I found totally transformed my 15 350 xcf-w into a different animal and can be done to your bike.turn up your tps so it runs richer,these bikes are notorious for being set too lean from the factory for several reasons.get the big grunt manifold,snap air insert and high flow end cap from best dual sportbikes.this increases airflow and vortex delivery to compliment richer fuel setting.And on the post combustion side manifold and end cap are essentially equivelent to a high dollar fmf or pro circuit set up at a fraction of cost.Should be way more effective than a mapping switch,although I never did that to the 350 for actual comparison to be honest.Definitely worth consideration IMO.Best of luck.
