Yamaha YZ250FX Review - Episode 154

- Опубліковано 9 сер 2016
- Yamaha came to market with an off road racing dirt bike that fills a large gas in their lineup. This is a bike that can be ridden in off road, GNCC style situations. It can be ridden in hare scramble races. It can do desert, it can do single track. It might not even be terrible on a motorcross track for most average riders out there. Yes, it's a bit heavier than some of the other bikes in it's class due to the e-start, but it's a solid platform and it has been very fun to test over the past few months.

So excited for you to get the YZ250X
The thing I hate most about the YZFX is that there's no used ones for sale! People must be holding onto them.
Yeah. If you look up Vegas Romaniac, he said its the bike that put him out of business. He loves the bike, but there's nothing that breaks or has to be replaced; no projects on it. LOL
I bought the yz250x two stroke a few months ago and love it. the suspension is perfect for offroad and it has plenty of power. Yamaha did a great job on these offroad bikes
Can't wait to get one for myself.
Would you say your bike is better than the YZ250FX?
@@brockmiller3277 probably better for trail for sure rather than the four-stroke, then with just a couple goodies like a stealthy flywheel and full pipe..
Nice job Kyle as always!
I'm buying one tomorrow so pumped!
They are really fun and snappy offroad bikes.
I just bought the yamaha yz250fx wow very impressive. Awsome power and suspension for a 180 pound rider. I think so far it a perfect fit for experienced riders for trails.
Man I want one so bad, damn. Put me a couple pieces of soft luggage on that baby and ride it everywhere.
I LOVE my 16 250FX...coming from an 02 CR250 setup for woods, the blue bike is much more refined. More stable at speed, corners better, sounds awesome, coil and oil up front!!! Wouldn't mind it losing a few pounds but it's really easy to maneuver in tight gnar....twist it to the stop!!!
You rock man ! love your podcast as well !!
You should keep making reviews its great info for me to choose witch bike to get.
:)
Thanks for a great review, I've been following this series closely for months now :)
I finally rode the FX myself last weekend, at my local closed circuit enduro track and agree strongly with most of those points - particularly the hard to access fuel tank and the low gearing.
I currently ride the KTM 250 xcf-w and the gearing on the FX was even lower, which made it a lot harder to ride smoothly and as a result tired me out a lot quicker.
I must say I did find the suspension years ahead of the KTM. Both my KTM and the FX I tested were set up by the same suspension expert, for the exact same weight and very similar riding styles so it was a very fair comparison. Ultimately I found the FX suspension to be far firmer and smoother throughout the stroke and was far more confidence inspiring.
Thanks again for this series, look forward to the next instalment.
I have to say that I have found the KTM suspension more confidence inspiring while riding off road. Suspension is so subjective from one rider to another, you know?
Nice review Kyle!
Friend of mine rode a WR with some FX modifications to 18th in the Bronze class at the Roof of Africa last year. Some hot tips for our local Yamaha gurus are to use exhaust wrap on the header to keep the heat in the pipe and away from the radiators etc. The other mod that makes a big difference is to lower the rear end 10mm (internal lowering with spacers), which apparently helps improve turning and stability significantly
Spot on, even for us wr owners (with competiton kit). After a G2 throttle tamer, 3 gallon tank, FMF exhaust I'm very happy with my bike. I hope to find a 250 KTM to borrow soon for comparison, honestly, they look more fun ergonomically than the Yamaha's - lower and leaner.
Great review! Thanks for sharing!
Can't wait till you get the 2 stroke version. I love mine!
Same.
Love you channel man! Always great content! Brandon @ Dirthammers.
I'm a Filipino trail rider sir Kyle, learned a lot from you
I picked one up today it's so nice
Hey Kyle, Had the chance to ride a 2015 YZ250X! I was picking up my 06 YZ250F head from a local bike shop Mossy creek cycle after it melted down lol, but they are both hare scramblers with the local AHSCS and had picked a new one up for his son's new race bike! WoW you're going to dig it the most, it is way different than the FX, gear box is totally different than the FX as well, no E start, bike is crazy quick though, get one..... you'll love it!
I remember having the FIRST issue of Dirt Bike mag. June i believe, 1970! Boy did I love that mag and the people who made it. First real dirt bike. 1974 YZ. Bought it new, saved up, paid cash from working in acabinet shop at 17. 1975. Wow! Look at bikes now woyld you. Four strokes? Ppphhhhhhhtt. Premix please. I can still hold on. Just one more YZ before I go to knobby fever heaven.
I owned this bike and you cant go wrong with the fun factor of the 250fx . This bike will make you a better rider as the motor never abuses the rider but rips if you want, it is stable at speed , jumps well , the suspension is great and is super reliable, it turns great if you spend some time with setup and in a particular riding area. It is a little awkward in really tight trails compared to a 2 stroke.I would ride this in smooth flowing trails and fast single track also good on mild old school motocross tracks. This is a great bike for a racer or weekend warrior. New bike is a 2018 Husky tx300 and still love everything about Yamaha.
Bill Werner what is your pick between the two? Literally have it narrowed down between those bikes.. born and raised on 4 strokes all my life.. rode a mates 300xc and fell in love, but yamha has a great deal on at the moment, so I’m lost!
Love the videos!!!! You nailed it on this bike.id love too ride with you one day
Love this video. Lurchy!
Getting the 2016 tomorrow can't wait
I've got the 2019 yz250fx..it's bloody awesome can't fault it
This bike will be amazing and I might be getting one. I know that all the problems can be fixed and modded
this bike is great on mileage, i have been in races where i didn't have to stop! 50 mile GNCC races.
Clutch control man, gotta keep it covered in any "loose or hairy" situation. Love the peppiness of it!!! Mitigate translation to the ground with the clutch, that's what it's there for but other than that and a couple small things it's hard to complain about isn't it? You need to do a build on this man, oddball stuff like port and polish, things like that would be awesome to see with or without dyno before and after hp ratings and tq.. I'd love a 150xcw to build for woods riding, eating people up on the local trails on the pipe alot kinda riding, sadly I only have a $1500 budget right now and will likely have to sell in the spring to buy more equipment or a trailer for the business I'm trying to get going doing landscaping, I'm tired of earning someone else's living too and want a chance to treat employees the way I would have liked and giving opportunity to own their share of the business and get percentage based income if they choose, to empower them to want to produce more and have high standards.. I hope this works.. 😕
love this bike, Yamaha all the way
I just bought one of these bikes used with maybe 80hrs on it. Upgraded from a 2004 KTM 300mxc. Huge upgrade obviously. 2 rides in on very wet conditions and I love it already. Wrong tires and all. Any setup recommendations would be appreciated. Will be watching more of your videos on it. Thankful I found your old review.
Man.. It sure is hard having to pick between the Yamaha YZ250fx & KTM 250 xc. Might just get both :D
Coming from someone who works in a shop that sells both, we do roughly 8-9 KTM motor rebuilds to 1 Yamaha.
@@cullennowell Thanks for that info!!
2017. I just bought one. They still dont have that fuse area covered. They did add the front lower cover. They removed the kickstarter.
Do they make a cover for that fuse block yet?
Where do you live man? You've got beautiful trails!
great video.....
how is the suspension? i do trails and a little motocross but i like the idea of the long range gearbox for trails. because i miss that from my old 2003 excf250 now got a 2011 sxf250
It's always fun to ride a YZ125 pinned. It's the same for 250 vs 450 4 strokes.
Hey Kyle, I have a 2015 WR250F (aus version is very similar to the FX once de-restricted, they come with the "competition kit") - currently thinking of trading it for a Beta 300 RR - Which would you prefer ? I had the same nit picks as yourself - the plastic fit is terrible compared to the older model (Airbox, how the fuel tank lines up and the exposed wiring. Annoys me for the cost of these!) and that werid "lurchyness" you describe is there as well. I think it must just run a bit leaner right off idle then it should. Using the clutch solves it or just having a slightly higher idle makes it not too bad....still annoying though!
I like to ride the bottom end of the rpm range and just "cruise" through the trails so not sure if the Beta 300RR would be a good choice or not.
What do you think mate?
Nice review mate, I think they have a while ago still to be as good as the ktm off roads due to them been focusing on mx
you should do a video on setting rebound
They actually flaunt that gaping hole in the paneling in the manual. They are show casing the technology.
I race my 2014 yz 250f in the woods and I am always pushing hard on single track and I was so surprised how long the gas really does last. I know it isnt a 250fx but the torque is pretty bad in the tight woods.
Hi I’m turning 13 soon and I’ve out grew my 2016 Crf150f and I want this bike for casual trail riding and a little track that i built in my backyard. Would you recommend this bike thanks for your consideration.
I ride a 08 CR250R and I use to have the same problem in the rear with lifting; but I just removed the plastics in the back to expose the frame. It's not recommended but that's just how I prefer it now, and in Hawaii when we're trail riding having that plastic gone helps for when we are on a rocky river beds and you need to carry the rear over the rocks sometimes
i thought the last model year was 07
Jamil Watts maybe it is an 07 I swear the dealership told me it was an 08 though. I mean not that it mattered the bike was a everyday ride since I bought it and has been through hell & back a few times... them Hawaii struggles hahaha
Jamil Watts usually the bike's have the year on the sticker right? I might go check now, but it's not like I can get my money back the dealership that sold me had shut down due to financial reasons so I may have taken a few hundred dollar loss on price difference but it didn't occur to me to check the sticker when I purchased the bike
What’s a good battery to replace it with to avoid that hit start problem????
Thanks for the follow up! My brother just bought a 2016 KTM 250 xcf and I'm buying the yz250fx. Should be interesting and lots to 1 up and argue about like typical brothers. lol
I'm putting out the review of the KTM 250 XC-F very soon.
I did have a chance to ride his XC-F, I did find it to vibrate through the foot pegs causing my feet to become fatigued fairly quick. Maybe it's my cheaper thor boots? I'm not to sure, but something maybe something to look into while you're riding it. Anyway ride safe and have fun!
other than that a very well balanced bike.
I feel as if they should've done some redesigning on the FX to accompany a larger gas tank. I imagine an aftermarket oversized tank for this bike wouldn't work out too well. That is.. If they even make them...
Thanks for the information on these bikes. it's slightly off topic but would you consider this Yamaha to feel more heavy and planted than even the 350 XC you been riding lately? I know you're riding and testing the 350 and the new KTM's supposed to feel really light and lively. I'm sure you want to get into that and another video, but I'm very close to making a decision on a bike and it would help me out quite a bit. Thanks
Great review!
what you think about clutch compering to hydraulic one. Is it harder to use in enduro?
Dirt bike channel Hey, I'm trying to buy a 250 but I can't decide of yz or cr 250 2 stroke for the trails?
great video, i love what you do. one quick question. the tire shelves in the back ground, awesome. how did you mount them to the plate and what is it made out of. IM DOING THIS in my garage ASAP... once again keep em coming.
Just built a half circle shelf and screwed tires to it.
Tbh I like the spot the air box is it sits high and away from possible water
I road a YZ250F last week and it had nice power, way better than a WR that I road years ago. Would you say that a FX is close to the same power as the YZ250F? I think I'm still leaning towards getting a KTM XC-F 250 or 350, but have been looking into the YZ250FX.
Well the good thing about having the oil cap under the seat is that u don't bang your nuts on it when u come back down from a jump
I laughed harder then I should have at this
These bikes actually do get great mileage and also is it actually that much of a bother to open the filler cap? I did wonder about the gas tank when I first got it but haven't gotten low on gas at all. Also, you can grab the sub frame for putting on the stand.
My 15 fx gets over 100 miles on a tank, and 80 ish at a orv park, you crazy bruh the gas mialage is amazing
Is there much difference between this bike and a normal 250 such as crf 250 or kx250f?
Hello Mr. Brotherson,
first of all you do awesome videos (y). Do you have any experience with the KTM EXC 380?
Kyle, Can you share where you got that tug strap for the rear, or did you engineer your own?
Let me guess it was your 62 Yr pops who called a bike "lerchy" never once in my life have I heard someone call about that or is it even a word nonetheless great video buddy love the bike
WR is the detuned version of the FX.$100 will get you the competition kit for the WR that makes it pretty much a FX. Add a new pipe to make it event better.
Would you say it's a comfortable bike to ride on tight single tracks in the woods? Also the same question for YZ250X. I heard that KTM 250XCF since 2014 or so don't have much of a bottom end to speak of. Is it the same for YZ250FX?
How does this compare to the husqvarna te300 ? I’m thinking of trading my bike in for a four stoke
Well one thing I know from experience is that Yamaha makes beautiful drumkits
2 years and running with my 2017 FX. Got the tuner to tame the snappy throttle for woods work. Not having a kickstarter doesn’t bother me one bit. The dzus fasteners are great and so easy on the airbox cover. There’s a company that sells a kit that replaces the dzus fasteners for regular bolts. They claim it to be quicker but getting a tool and spinning those three bolts is not quicker than three 1/4 turn attached fasteners. Finally the fuse tray. No issues with dirt there. It’s a dirt bike. It’s meant to get dirty. Yamaha has put out a bullet proof bike. Buy it, ride it, love it.
Hey where did you purchase the hand grip on the back of the seat?
Most popular bike in Australia !!
Great job Kyle. Would love to see the two stroke yamaha! Quick Question. Are you interested in adventure riding or not and what bike would buy if you would take on adventure riding. Thanks. Love your videos.
I am not into the adventure riding to be honest.
I got a ktm 250 4 stroke and IT has both kick start and electric start
Great video... I'd love to hear your thoughts about the WR250F with the ECU competition programing kit compared to the YZ250FX. Are they effectively the same bike? If i get a great deal on a new 2015 WR, is it worth it?
The WR has is a tamed down, plugged up, lower HP version of the YX250FX. The WR is a great bike, but it's more of a trail bike. It feels sluggish and soft as compared to the YZ250FX IMO. I have not been on a WR with the competition ECU that you are referring to. The YZ250FX is a race bike and behaves like one.
Looking at buying this model. Would you still recommend
You should review a 125. maybe a kx125, cr125 or a yz125. Btw great videos, keep up the good work!!!
I agree!!!
Honda doesn't make cr125's or 2-strokes anymore unfortunately. I still race a 97 cr125 to this day. My personal opinion about it is that it is bullet proof and you can build the bike for exactly what you desire. You can not go wrong with it. The 97 is the last year of the steel frame and 6 speed gearbox.
He should review the new husqvarna off road bikes, for example the 125 tx!
nicebike Rook
Thaks Brandon.
The WR might be slower and heavier but I love mine and it's plenty fast for me. If I had a 250 I might care about it being less powerful but even a slightly detuned 450 is a hell of a lot of power. I also have a custom map I can run which is supposedly the same as the YZ but I haven't had the need for more power yet
Good stuff. Glad you like it. That is all that matters!
Its not any slower, the motor is almost the same. it's just made for more technical riding. the wr is an awesome bike
Do you think something like the G2 throttle tamer would help with the off-idle "lurchiness"?
wetfloorsign I bought one used and expected the lurchiness and it for sure was scary in tight woods. Turns out it had a G2 throttle tube with quick turn cam. Ordered up the "tamer" cam and swapped it out with great results. It's still got that clean off/on but you've got a lot of room to be more liberal with the throttle. As I get more used to the bike I may work back towards the stock cam profile but for now this is working wonders.
personal i think the cable clutch is a good thing as it dosnt give me as many problems with hidralycs and so on.
also, if you take the older moddels like my own ktm 2012 model has hidralyc clutch, and the new ones has hidralyc clutch
I haven't had any issues with any of the hydro clutches I've owned. I've had about 6 of them.
Dirt Bike Channel hmm, okay well then i see why you look difrently at it. nice videos you make, i came into your channel through my friend and theyre awesome, thank you for replying :D
Kyle would the YZ 250 FX be an good match for general trail riding for a moderate skilled rider? Or would the WR 250 F provide similar power and handling? I like having some lights on the bike but if the WR250F is slower, I wondering if I'll get bored with it. I'm an older rider in my 50s so I don't plan to race but I do like having enough power to crawl up hills in the mountains here in New Mexico. Any info would be great, I plan to buy one in the morning. Thanks!
Michael Wood the Wr is fast it’s a duel sport bike. It’s a little on the heavy side for me compared to the fx. At the end of the day you wouldn’t be disappointed in either of them
I'm 51....190 lbs
The 250FX has more than enough power for trail riding,or hill climbing.
It revs to the moon and goes.
Wouldn't be my choice in sand dunes but anywhere else the 250 makes more than enough power, and chances are it will be riders skill being the problem.
The filler cap does suck I will admit! Had to use pliers for the first time time on it the other day to grab the ridge in the middle to unscrew it. Its still a nice design with the intake being up front though..oh well
Give and take, right?
I’ve noticed that no matter what kind of bike Kyle is reviewing or talking about, if somebody were to take a shot of whiskey anytime he says “KTM” in a video they would end up blackout drunk or in the ER. 🤣
Best review ever!!
Do you dont review the cross versions?
The other Cross reviews are bullshit compared to your reviews!
I'm bout to get one in a year
Do you think that the Ktm 150 xc w has good low end power even though it is a smaller 2 stroke?
I haven't ridden one yet...
This "lurchy" description that you're using; can't that be remedied with the programmer?
Could u please review the Kawasaki kx250 2017 4 stroke
this guy is stretching to find anything to hate on a Yamaha
Cody I thought the exact same thing..the high airbox is one of the best features on the new yamahas and he's complaining..it literally had 3 no tool fasteners. Hate guys like this.
you realise he goes to pretty much every single point and people dont do river crossing on a riding bases
He's always hating on Yamaha
Cody I think Kyle is being very tactful and very nice to the yz. I love the yz250 two smoker in the woods, and I like the yz250f on the track (I have had two of them). That being said the KTM is just better in most respects; fit and finish, component quality, engineering, etc. I actually prefer yamaha's querky air intake because it is superior in function and better protects the engine. The KYB forks are hands down better, even more so when they are properly valved. But in all other respects the KTM is better. If I had to give one reason and only one reason it would be the KTM frame, and the engine design and quality and power, and the clutch, and the brakes, and the ergos, and... you get the point. But the YZ forks are still better. LOL
Great Review! Can it , be made , Street legal ,in Fla?
Kyle, enjoyed your reviews of the Yamaha YZ250FX and the YZ450FX. Your reviews are vastly superior to almost all the other channels out there. You are tops. You seem to know exactly what we as riders are looking for from channels like yours. Drop dead serious question for you... if you could only have one of two bikes for all of your riding, the Yamaha YZ250FX and the YZ450FX, which one would you choose? My type of riding is exactly like you show in your videos, aggressive trail riding. No MX style riding. Some pavement to get to the dirt. I would find a way to make the bike street legal. I greatly value your opinion. Many thanks.
Stephen, I would personally have the 250 over the 450 in this case, having ridden both motors. It feels so much lighter when riding it, and it's more fun IMO. The only problem there is you said you were going to make it street legal. I a not a fan of street legalizing these bikes, so I wouldn't go there personally. Having said that, if you are going to take it to the streets, the 450 gets the nod over the 250 since the extra power comes in handy on the pavement. I hope that helps.
That helps. I'll focus on defining how much time I'm likely to spend on the pavement.
BTW, I'll definitely make purchases through the various outlets you are affiliated with. Least I can do. What would be your choice of adventure riding jacket and pants?
Hi Kyle, can you comment on the wide ratio 6 speed transmission ? For those of us that like an mx-like bike for dual sporting ... and before you cringe let me explain - My concern is getting to close by trails not actual dedicated road riding. Most of my riding starts right from my garage not from my truck so this is important. I had a crf250x and with a 5 speed it had to be darn near neutered gearing-wise to get a decent cruising/not screaming pace (55mph). Again I know this is a race bike but a lot of us convert them for more fun while enjoying technical trail riding. (us 40+ ex-racers). How does the tranny compare to an XCF-W speed, did Yami get the 6 speed right ?
Yes, I think the gearing for speed/transitions was really good. This bike did great in 6th gear. The KTM 250 XC-F couldn't pull 6th gear.
Enjoy all your videos, Thanks. Need some advice. I am 5' 10" and on my fifties with fairly good shape. I ride a KTM 1190 Adventure (Regular) and want to improve my dirt riding skills. Not looking to go fast but to go trough the type of terrain you ride without the extreme sections, not that aggressive or at least not at the beginning but consistence. Would rather fuel injection and electric start, 2 or 4 stroke don't care, New or used don't care. Any suggestion?
Has yamaha had good reliablity lately?
Could you compare this to Honda's CRF250?
Kyle, you've been riding the bike for a good while now... Any feedback on gas mileage for typical trail riding? How does it compare to the purported 70 mpg for the WR250R?
I sold this bike a few months ago. Mileage is trail and rider dependent for sure. It's not like a car where you can give an actual mileage since the terrain and the riders aggressiveness (or lack there of) makes a huge difference.
Hey Kyle! I have been watching your videos for a while now and am really liking them. I am a 15 year old that rides a KTM200 exc and ride enduro type singletrack. I really like the sharp power from it and the hectic powerband and the adrenaline rush it gives me. But all of my friends ride 250 four strokes that i have never rode. do you think i made the right choice with the 2 stroke or should i have gone with the four stroke?
I KNOW you made a good choice with the 200. It is a great bike. Don't second guess yourself Jason.
what he said....i regret ever selling my ktm 200. Awesome bikes.
I’m a Yamaha guy and own this bike I love it but I feel they just took a shortcut for a trail bike. They need to do some more r and d and thought for the future and really have a bike to compete with ktm/husky trail niche.
Hows the gearing for tight single track and can I plate it with out too much trouble? I'm a Yamaha guy too!
Can anybody tell me should i get a honda crf 250r enduro the suzuki rmz 250 or the yamaha yz250fx or the wr250f which one wont blow up thanks 😀
If you do proper maintenance none of them will blow up :) The yz250fx and wr250f are great bikes but they are 250 pounds which is heavy. If you are doing motocross mainly buy a rmz but for off road use you cant go wrong with a yamaha.
Im 12 years old 5'8 and weigh 140 pound. I can start my dads 450, but its to much power for me but a 250f doesn't feel uncontrollable. what bike should I get.
Definitely learn on a smaller, lighter bike before you get something like a 450. You'll have more fun and get good experience.
a wr250f is the same as a yz250fx just the muffler is a little more restricted otherwise they feel the same
Quick question! I remember you saying that you never really need a 450f because the 250 has enough power for everything. In that case why don't you ride a 125? Is it because the two stroke 300 has more low end grunt?
I really can't explain it but the 300 2 stroke is just magic. Doesn't eat you up like a 450 and can go slow better than any other bike I've ever been around. It also has enough power to do anything so, it's really hard to beat for an "all around" package.
Good bike for a heavier rider?
Where do you sell all the bikes and how much did you pay for it, and how much do you sell them for?
I use a local classified website in my area. I lose money on each bike, but I don't have any other choice since the manufacturers aren't giving them to me.
