- Can the all new 2018 Yamaha YZ450F motocross bike do extreme enduro? I took it deep into Middle-earth (Takaka, New Zealand) to find out...
Thanks to Josh Coppins for the use of his bike in this video.

At 13:28 I said "Gandalf and the Hobbits", I meant to say "Gandalf and the *Dwarves", that's my bad.
Haha, I know the feeling mate!
@@ashsowman forget to change accounts?
hardest part with riding my 450 in tight trails was the clutch control. It was so damn hard and exhausting trying to feather the clutch while not giving too much throttle. Picked up a rekluse auto clutch and that was a game changer. If you really like your 4 stroke ide highly recommend one.
Magnificent bike! Keep the vids rolling Ash! Winter is nearly over, can’t wait to ride a lot more again!
I'm glad to hear that mate, I'll keep them rolling!
Glad there's another video of u riding Ash!!
I turn my idle screw up a few turns on my rmz450 when I hit tight trails. Does not stall has often. But hey you got e-start sweeeet!!!
You probably shouldn't do that, I remember watching a video about fuel injection when Yamaha first moved to it and it said you should never touch your idle screw and if you do you should reset it immediately using the GYTR power tuner.
Edit: I found the video I was talking about: ua-cam.com/video/YG21TKfHTW8/v-deo.html
The video says some type of tachometer or gytr tuner, in my case that would be my click count and earing. Its just a couple clicks on the idle screw it only makes run a bit faster so she don't flame out at low speed. I have not had any issue so far and i always return to my stock setting after I'm done with tight trails.
I'm surprised. This 450 did actually do great on them trails. Slap a heavier fly wheel in her and she would be perfect! Nice vid dude.
Thanks mate. Yeah a heavier flywheel and some shorter gearing would make this thing a weapon offroad!
Wow that’s a lot of skill to take that monster of a bike through all of that
You ride what you got, thats the best way to do it. You can change things to make it ride better on the trails, i personally ride a 2009 kx250f monster energy edition on the trails and i have a blast i just swapped tires to a hybrid trail and dirt tire, and added handguards, changed the sprockets and added a 3.7 gallon fuel tank it works great👍
Nick Covington I see more kx250f at harescrambles than ktms
What a beautiful track with the 4 strokes
I do both enduro and motocross on a kx450f, lots of fun for sure man. New subscriber by the way, your channel looks cool
Glad to have you onboard mate! If you want to have a look around, my popular uploads page is a great place to start: ua-cam.com/channels/ZDtwe5iXF7z8cQTnvMXQzw.htmlvideos?sort=p&view=0&shelf_id=2
sweet video, gotta love them trail rides ;-)
Thanks mate, yeah you can't go wrong with a good trail ride!
"Trail ride heroooes" haha that's great. Awesome vid!
Haha, thanks mate!
electric start awesome💪
Good vid makes a difference when you talk through it. Cheers from old X trail rider NZ.
Thanks mate, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Did my first trail ride this weekend, didn't see any trail ride hero's but will keep an eye out at the next one Lololol! awesome video 👍👍👍
Haha, thanks. Treat them with extreme caution if you see any!
haha just had one of them on my ride yesterday! pain in the ass
YES THESE CONSTANT VIDEOS ARE SICK THANKYOU
Haha, no worries mate!
good thing that bike has electric start or the vid would be 1 hour long
I'd still be there haha!
Yup. Really needs that stalling issue fixed to be any sort of trail/enduro bike; that's terrible.
Great vid tho it was an epic ride!
450s are just not meant for trails
@@relish9452 wrong
Jan Michael-Vincent Well here in Alaska the trails are to tight and techy
At 8:00 was the bike overheating alot in this part?
That bike is so sick, I didn’t know that you could turn the choke off by turning the throttle forward.
Yeah that's actually quite a cool feature aye, I didn't know that until recently either.
My hands hurt watching this lol are you running the stock 13/49 sprockets?
I was waiting for the "extreme" part....come up to PNW in USA if you want EXTREME ENDURO
good video champ, should we expect some more goonsquad soon?
This was going to be a goonsquad episode but it just didn't end up being very funny or even very interesting to be honest and I'm not going to post something that isn't up to scratch. I will get back into goonsquad soon, don't worry but I just want to kick it off again with a bang and this just wasn't it unfortunately.
understand bro, still a great vid
Hahaha the trailride Hero is one to be careful around on trailrides, espeacially around Mud bogs hahaha
Yeah I always treat them with extreme caution, especially when I'm inside their whisky throttle range.
Great video! Where about in Takaka is this? What a great spot!
Another good'n Ash. There's gotta be someone who can 3D print some prototype Trail Ride Hero action figures.
Haha, that would be awesome! Thanks mate.
that teetree hill section looks aweseome!!!!! get some bloody guards hahah
Yeah it was awesome, no handguards wasn't ideal for it though haha!
Nice vid
Great terrain
Hahaha awesome video man, but please, do it for me and get a skid plate, i would cry if jason the river rock went through any of your cases
Haha, so would I mate! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
how do you attach your camera to the front of your helmet and do you recommend the gopro session
In says in the description below all of my videos man, I use ProShot mounts. Yeah, the Hero Session is a great camera, the Hero 5 Session has a better image but the microphone on the Hero is so much better, that's why I still use it, I'd recommend it to anyone.
thanks mate
Like bringing a knife to a sword fight 🤺 😂
What map setting ing have you got the bike on or have you customised your own if. So what's it at thanks
scott bents aren’t you a bit young to be remapping dirt bikes?
I have seen multiple of your vids where you ride a motocross bike in a trail ride or enduro setting is there a reason for this or do you just ride motocross and enduro?
I do videos of them at motocross tracks too, sometimes the only event on that weekend is a trail ride or a cross country though so I take them there which is incidentally a very important test for a motocross bike because I believe that at least 50% of motocross bikes sold are taken offroad at some point and 25% of them are ridden primarily offroad, at least that's the way it is here in New Zealand, whether that's the case overseas too I'm not sure but I do get a lot of comments from people who aren't from New Zealand so I guess it probably is.
thanks for the response thats sorta what i assumed really like your videos keep it up
hi why do u have question marks after the ¨YZ450F¨?? i was wondering is this bike bad for enduro or what do u mean? is it harder with this bike? i want to buy a yz450f too , i had a ktm 690 enduro R before. i think the yz450f is easier n more fun for enduro or am i wrong? grateful for answers to help me
Maron S 450s are terrible enduros
One more time...we can see,the Indian is important, not the arrow 🤙 good hands mate, I got 2019 yz450fx doing really good enduro (sometimes hard enduro)here at Indonesia with super light 2stroke,Yamaha made a good job with this 450💪💪🤙🤙
the suspensions are softer? or are they hard?
Welche Cam hast du?
There was so much carnage in the morning
is the choke on them a trotle lock because if it is it is realy cool cause it a pain in the arse to reach under the engine support on the kxf
and does the new yzf have a realy strong low end like the old ones cause that would be half the reason to buy a new yamaha cause that tourqe is so good
and what trail ride is this
Yeah you just roll the throttle forwards to turn the choke off. That beautiful bottom end is even better on the 2018 model, I was really pleased to learn that because I use it a lot as you can see! This was the Takaka School Trail Ride.
thats nice man will you ride the 2018 honda crf250r i want to know if there really is a difference between it and the 17. Fuel injected four stroke have got me fucked up a few times cause the just get traction and dont really lose it i jumped off my 250 a couple of time and slid down a hill trying to run down it cause i didnt know it was that slippery. I need to come down to this trail ride to practice my hard enduro skills
I doubt I'll ride the 2018 Honda CRF250R, my local Honda shop is too small to have a demo one and Honda New Zealand won't lend me one either.
Trail ride heroes have to use that one haha , have stopped and had a good laugh as some of them
Yeah they can be pretty hilarious!
Nice video 👍👍👍
Thanks mate!
A motocross bike is well capable of doing all enduro type terrain, I don't know why people think they can't for some reason
*Some motocross bikes, you wouldn't catch me anywhere near this type of terrain on a RM-Z450 or a KX450F.
Sowman Films can't go wrong with a CRF😉😂
Its not that it can't its just better to use an enduro bike for enduro riding. If you're going to the track a lot and few trail rides here and there then get a motocross bike. If you're dealing with shit that Graham Jarvis does, Its not that you cant do it with a motocross bike, but it makes your life a whole lot easier.
What ride was this ?
The Takaka School Trail Ride.
great video man keep up the good work
Will do mate, thanks!
nice looking place to ride
How many km’s was the trail ride?
Not sure, about 25kms if I had to guess.
Did you configuirated for enduro ?
Nah this bike is completely stock standard (as it came out of the box).
You should take a YZF250 two stroke on that same path and see the difference. I think a 300exc would be pretty easy obviously
What's a yzf 250 2 stroke ?
Its yz 250 .
👌🏼Gold
I don't really like that new front fender
I thought that at first too but it's grown on me a bit.
Yeah its not awful. Good video by the way!
Everyone take a shot when he stalls. If you make it to the end of the video, replay the video until it is impossible to do so.
Any better to the 2017?
Yeah, slightly better in every way really, a bit lower and slimmer, a bit lighter, handled a bit better, had a bit more power and the electric start was amazing! Some great improvements to this year's bike.
Awesome to hear from someone who has actually ridden the bike in all conditions. I have a minimal of 2 hours on my 17. So i may trade it in and finance the 18.
The E-Start would be so nice.
Haha, the electric start is a must-have in my opinion, especially if you plan to go offroad!
Very true. Till you come across and E-Start has a problem. LOL needs a kick start. And the 18 has no kicker correct?
Yeah no kickstarter, a lot of people say that same thing but I took the kickstarter off my 2015 Yamaha YZ250FX and ran it like that for over 100 hours without a problem so I'm pretty happy to put my faith in Yamaha's electric starts.
wassup bro can i upload this video on my facebook page? All credits will go to you Naturally . Braaaaap
No.
looks easy with a eletric start ; )
It would have been hell without one haha!
Would of been cool if you did it on a yz 250
Dam need a rekluse no stall clutch on that beast
Yeah, or a heavy flywheel, I don't like Rekluses because you can't stall the bike when you get stuck on a hill which is something I do all the time to stop myself from rolling backwards.
Sowman Films yea man I had a 2013 crf250 and it was agrivating how much it would stall on that kind of riding so I decided to stick with my 08 yz for Enduro type riding
Mean vid, i ride round on a yz85 with mid range engine mods and she goes up the high country like its nothing.
And there it is... Realization of the 2nd gear.
Hahaha
State?
Lol, New Zealand!
I am definitely a trail ride hero, truth hurts.
I bet u barely came out of 1st on that 450 😂 I just picked a clean ass 19 up same bike , 3.3hrs on the engine brand new crate motor from Yamaha
The first gear on that bike seems awfully long
ACreativeName it's cause it a motorcrosser less but longer ones
All motocross 450s have extremely long first gears, that's why enduro bikes have six gears, not for more top speed but for more low speed torque.
Sowman Films is it because the engine is so powerful?
Fair play to you, but i think i'll stick to my 300 EXC for that kinda going
Gnar-fucking-ly. Your yami must be hating you by now lol.
Haha, Yamahas eat this stuff for breakfast.
A 2 stroke probably would of been better for that terrain.
everyone and his brother has barkbusters that dont ride around brush and trees and then someone riding in the thick of has none???
Even your other friends think 4 strokes are quick
JaArRyi FleshBlood The days where 2 strokes are superior are long gone. The 450s these days make around 60 horsepower, while the 250 2 strokes make around mid 40s. Even the 250 4 strokes have caught up completely in power. The new KTM 250 SX-F has 46 horsepower. That's exactly the same amount as the 2018 Yamaha YZ250, and the KTM is 4kg lighter aswell.
Dean Grimsell so 4 strokes have the same hp as 2 strokes?
JaArRyi FleshBlood Lately they caught up yeah. For example the KTM 250 SX-F has 46 horsepower, and a redline of 14k. Compare that to say a 2018 Yamaha YZ250, which has 45 horsepower, and weighs abit more. The biggest difference especially is with the 450s, they have over 60 horsepower these days with the 2018 models. I think the KTM 450sxf has something like 62 or 63 horsepower.
Dean Grimsell nice
Dean Grimsell it’s funny how 4 strokes have a higher top end speed
Bitch i fucking ride enduro in a '02 YZ426F ahah
Those 450s stall easy lol
sendit199 of course, they aren’t made to be ridden around in first gear at low RPMS
@@chrishansen8026 yeah I have a rm125 and damb I have hang on
You sound like you're in 2nd gear
535th :DD
Well done mate.
Way to much yapp'en, and u need to giver the onion lot more !!!
