    The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

      @@jackjules7552 you are correct with that observation. The truth is that the fans weren’t “dying” for Diana to leave but there was so much talk about it happening eventually that we kind of expected it. Even without Flo there, the group was still selling out shows.

    When Diana segues from “Funny Girl” to “Don’t Rain on my Parade” and she whirls around into 3 perfectly choreographed spins and then she stomps her foot right before jumping into the song she is telling us and showing us that she is ready to go out on her own and an important aspect to the Ross mystique was born.
    Her acting at the beginning of the medley was spot-on.
    We finally get to enjoy this Supreme performance in excellent quality!

    • @RP-oe3uq
      @RP-oe3uq 3 роки тому +6

      Cathy K,
      I’m saying that the segment of the medley when Diana spins 3 times, then stomps her foot and then starts singing is perfectly choreographed. She is point-on, graceful and elegant all while showing her determination, independence and strength which is the theme of “Don’ Rain on my Parade”. These characteristics of a strong woman became steadfast elements of Diana’s persona as a performer. It was the perfect segue and choreography for “Parade’s” intro as the song deals with these themes of being a powerful woman.

      I’m glad you get my comment. When I first saw this medley on tv way back in 1968 those few seconds of Diana stepping away from the group and dancing, spinning and stomping made such an impression on me. Peacefull778, You’re right. All the Supremes wanted this particular formation of the group to come to an end. I remember how I couldn’t wait for Diana to leave. You’re also right that the 70s Supremes had a new energy and this helped them rack up some wonderful hits through 1976 or so. Radio DJ’s would play up competitions between the group and Diana when their songs would hit the airwaves around the same time. Fun days.

    6:20 Ross clearly knew what she was doing. Cindy Birdsong recounted it in an interview. She stated that what appeared to be Diana looking up to the heavens was actually her looking up at the television monitor mounted to the ceiling to be sure she was covering her and Mary's faces. This wasn't a diva move, it was typical Ross narcissism.

      This format was intentional, Diana was supposed to go solo the following year. This performance was promoted for Ross as a solo performer and the Supremes as a contemporary group. Florence is the lead on ain't that good news and they would put out a medley of Sam Cooke songs on big gigs like Roostertail '66, but they wouldn't include this tune.

      +Live Life same here, I'll always defend her earthy self, her big voice and even bigger heart and soul. She reminds me a little of Etta James and Billie Holiday, very heavy voice and large range. Still, even though Gordy and Motown considered her voice enough commercial, I think she could’ve had been a success in her own right. She needed tools and time happened to be one of them. I wish she had that chance.

    The nit-pickyness in me is low key mad that Mary wasn’t as close to Diana as Cindy was during that zoom out part at 5:46! It kinda messed up the effect of them still being right next to her after she was seen departing from them in the last scene (5:01). But that’s just the Supremes fan in me. I LOVE them and notice every little intricacy of their performances. I am so sad I never got the opportunity to meet Mary before she passed. 😢

    This is nice in retrospect. But put yourself in a teenager’s position with Vietnam on your mind… I don’t think this is what most of America’s youth really wanted to listen to, hence the commercial failure of the album (as well as most other DRATS efforts of this time). Maybe someone’s gay uncle or great grandmother would have loved it. Anyone else? A definite pass.

    What I got from this performance ,which I didn't even know existed, is that Dianna Ross must have auditioned for the role in funny girl but did not get the role because she was black in a climate that had just started to except us. In my opinion this performance was the Supremes way of saying, Dianna could have done this role and in my opinion she did an excellent job of proving her point! Performers like Baps and Selene Dion are great singers but the black community has never been a thought in their projected fan base. I was born in1968 at the turning point of this idiotic Donald Trump like mentality. With that said, we won just as we always do in the end.......

    • @sevillomatic
      @sevillomatic 3 роки тому +2

      No.
      Diana would have never auditioned for Funny Girl on Broadway as she never had the chops to do 6-8 shows a week. Babs did, and had already done it in I Can Get if For Your Wholesale. After she killed Funny Girl. on Broadway, the movie was made specifically to showcase her in the part.
      Diana (and Barry) were determined to position Miss Ross as a Black version of Miss Streisand and this project was intended to put her at that level and to establish an African American singer with the same prestige and respect Streisand was getting.
      PS.. this entire cd has just been re-released.
      check it out.

      As I commented earlier, this is perfect example of where the group was at this point. Diana full of herself and Mary and Cindy were having to put up with her attitude. The expressions of Mary and Cindy are priceless. And despite what Berry and Diana thought of them, after this week we know now that the world loved Mary Wilson. When the New York Times lavishes praise on someone in a lengthy obit you know that person was someone on note. On top of that, the 3 major networks devoted several minutes to Mary's death on their morning and evening newscasts. So rare. Some other major Oscar winners as of late barely got 30 seconds. Pretty much every major newspaper and tv station around the world reported on her death. I'm sure Diana was shocked to know that not just Supremes fans but everyone loved Mary, Flo, and Cindy equally!

      @@wonderboyjoy Kind of hard for a dead woman to promote an album. Right? So I think it is doing just fine for her best fans. I love it. How many of Diana's solo albums reached #1 in the US? ZERO. Most didn't break the top 100. It's all about the material. Had The Ross-led Supremes not had the HDH songs there would not be a "Diana!" Some of the crap Diana has put out is unlistenable IMO. And her albums reflect that. But she is still one of my fav singers. However, I cringe when she sings "I, I will survive." She needs to give that one and a few others in her concert set list a rest. "Thank You" will be for her most devoted fans. I hope it has a break out hit because I want her to top the charts again but it's doubtful.
