The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

No one will ever convince me, I didn't grow up in the best era!
We did. I was almost 13 when this came out. Memories.
The Cameramen did a good job here. Gave Mary and Florence their time in the spotlight too. Mary was eating it up and Florence had a sweet smile. This is the Supremes as I liked them best.
i totally agree, they were both very beautiful and this is how all the videos should have been
i know I am kind of off topic but do anyone know of a good place to watch newly released movies online?
@Conrad Xzavier Yup, been using Flixzone for since march myself =)
@Conrad Xzavier thanks, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D Appreciate it !!
@Dayton Devin happy to help =)
No matter what anybody say, to me it was all three Diana, Mary, Flo as a team that made it so magical. It was a perfect combination.
exactly
I agree 💯
yep, boy this brings me back and almost brings the boy crush back on Diana. lol
You're sooo right!!
Too bad Diana and berry Gordy didn’t see it that way
“The girls here!” I love this part😂
Not easy to grow old!
His memory dificulty was showing for a year already.
Old ‘stoneface’ never could remember names! God bless you Ed!

@@elifoust7664 What
Mary said in her book that Flo was wearing her natural hair for this performance. This was also Flo's last performance on Ed Sullivan
It's so sad for Florence Ballard and so damn right cruel BG and DR should hang thier heads in shame.
It was so messed up for her to be booted in July of '67.
Should have stuck with the fake hair 😉
@@lucasoheyze4597 You probably don't have any.
@@lucasoheyze4597 her natural hair is fine.
This performance is just electrifying. Mary is so gorgeous and perfectly on point. Florence looks dignified and amazing... and Diana just lets loose and rides this song like a wave. When her head gets to boppin, you know it's gonna be a great performance.
Best evah it's electric
agreed! Had a major crush on Mary
The wave was riding Lady Diana
Mary quite contrary ❤
I don't care who you are. This rocks! Electric is a great description! Diana's eyes when she gives the "come here" sign with her finger! I don't know what it is, but she's got it!
those girls were on fire during this performance! You can tell that Ed loved them dearly.
He loved them so much, He forgot the name of their group!!!!!!
@@JafarWade1970 possibly…Ed was up there in age and this happens to the best of us…Regards!

@@georginahawcroft8044 I thought Flo was really cute
@@geddy55 yes I thought so to she had an innocent look about and she had a great sense of humour. She should have been lead singer she founded the group and named it. I never liked Diana Ross anyway the way she and Berry Gorrdy treat her was awful ....
@@georginahawcroft8044 I always had a crush on Diana Ross when I was a boy, but what you say wasn't nice, ya Flo was the creator of the Primettes and lead singer first.
I sure do appreciate what Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard brought to these performances. Taking a moment to remember the late, multi-talented Frank DeVol, a rare Motown "outsider" who collaborated with Holland-Dozier-Holland to write "The Happening".
A great 👍 song.
Flo and Mary were the SOUL of the group...as for Ms Ross..no comment.
Frank DeVol aka "Happy Kyne" on "Fernwood Tonight"

Yes. This is my era. I remember when they first came out. I actually remember when Motown was starting out
And Mary.
@D M Thanks. I’m 78
Flo is super cute in this one.
This is pure gold. On Sundays, it was Church and Ed Sullivan. Saturday nights belonged to Lawrence Welk. Happy times. Everybody was here back then 😊❤
Would love to bring back those days as well as the loved ones we had back then! ❤
Yeah you never knew who was going to appear on Sullivan's show that night (unless you subscribed to TV Guide) The '60s had a plethora of many greats who appeared during the decade.
Mary was in a world of her own during this performance! I love it!!! She was superb!!!
Mary and Florence are absolute angels.x
✨️1967 🎵
The best female group of all-time by far!!!
Thats a fact, Destiny's child next.
Indeed it is the best Female group of all time Denise . I am a big fan of their songs and they are what i call Talented .
You seem pretty Fascinating and i definitely would really like for us to be friends .
So true
The Three Degrees as well.
No one can deny Diana Ross’ contribution to the group, but it was Mary and Florence who created the mystic of the Supremes. The glamour the choreography the harmony...all that separated them from the countless girl groups. They were a group in the beginning and that’s what made them a success. The three together.
TRUE
@Giselle I dont even think Mary HINTED at it. She just SAID it. LOL. And how hard she had to work to adjust her sound to fit Cindy's.
@Giselle yeah,I think you are right.Andantes sang on quite a few supreme songs.Did read that Andantes sang all the backing on love child.
@Giselle, yes. And when Diana left, even more so. They had a perfect combination. Their voices blended. And even though Diana's replacement Jean Terrell had technically a better voice and they still continued to make some great music, their voices never quite blended as well.
Well said.
I love the choreography and group formation. It’s nice to see Mary front and center. The camera person worked overtime on this performance. Great shots of Diana coupled with Flo and Diana coupled with Mary. Diana’s wig with that huge flip in front is so 60s and shows her flare for the extreme while Flo and Mary wear wigs that are more subdued.
It’s great that we’re getting all these Supremes’ videos but how coincidental is it that they are being released after Mary’s death. Too bad they hadn’t been released while she had still been with us so she could enjoy them too. It would have made her happy and she could have taken pride in all the work she had done to keep the Supremes’ legacy alive.
Flo's wig is amazing, completely the opposite of what the Supremes were known for. That short pixie style looks amazing on her too. Probably her best look, outside of the pageboy.
Who has the gowns, etc. ? ❤️🎶
Mary is in the middle because Flo had hauled off on Diana a couple of times. Ms Ballard and Ms Ross did not perform next to each other the last while. Just what I've read.
Even after all these years and nearly 50 years after her death...when I see Florence Ballard, I fall in love all over again with her. ❤️
Florence was my favorite Supreme. That smile and those looks on her face will make anyone fall in love with her.
Mr Ed Sullivan was a Huge fan of 'the girls'. 🤗👌
He was such a huge fan of "the girls" that he couldn't remember the name of the group.
Flo looked happy and beautiful.
Oddly enough the lyrics hit home to her career. Eery!!!
The Supremes would never have happened without Flo's drive and vision. ♡
Neither Flo nor Mary had any X-Factor. Sorry but true. Berry knew who belonged front & center.
Flo came up with the name (the supremes).
@@chasenip2 thats not true. Any one of these ladies could have been pushed and made into the star. Dont forget. Mary and Flo didnt get the constant support that Ross got, and think of how that must've made them feel. As young girls in their early 20s I'm sure that was a blow to the ego and self-confidence and I'm pretty sure they were hurt - not only by Berry slighting them but their so-called friend and bandmate jumping on the bandwagon with him as well. Must've been tough.
@@chasenip2 Not true!! "Berry knew who belonged front & center" for sure, the one who would go to bed with him!!
Stop it already!
Spectacular! Such beauty, the voices, the glamour, the pride and confidence, the tempo of the music. Obviously they took Ed's breath away. He could only intro them as "the girls". I was a proud little girl watching them live on the Sullivan show that night.
Hello K luv. How are you doing today 😊😊?
Beautiful!
Lady Di. , Flo ever , Q Mary . Ed must have lost it after the show.. His show was top clean fun . I bet it's was why the have a theater named after him .
No one like her one of a kind talent she will be forever remembered
To help those here--concerning "The Girls Here" introduction--Mary Wilson explained this in her first book "Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme." It became a term of endearment that Ed used after their first few appearances, under the guise that they were so familiar to the country by then that calling them something straightforward like "the girls" was obvious to everyone in the audience, both live and at home, as to who they were. Also, this term was unique in relation to all the girl groups of the day (none of whom got such personalized treatment in Ed's intros of them).
He really was enamored of The Supremes and almost every time they were on the show had them come over to talk to him a bit, following the performance--a treat only certain acts received.
Ohhhh, okay. For a moment I thought he had an epic brain fart.
@@tmamone83Sullivan sometimes had problems remembering individual names; after all, he dealt with so many artists over the years. Mary wrote that there were times Ed seemed a little confused as to who was who, particularly after Florence had gone.
Mary was always the most beautiful one! We will miss you, Mary!
Mary was indeed beautiful! So sad her sudden passing... lovely till the end
@@mattc2094 Agreed
Wonderful clip of the original 3 Supremes. We will forever miss the heart and soul of the group...Mary & Flo!
Indeed, we miss you Mary and Flo.... they were a brilliant trio, so sad how things turned out... but so glad got to see and hear them on UA-cam... truely one of a kind group
Mary and Florence were the real voices of the group in my opinion … but I do believe Diana possessed something only she could add to the image and sound of the group.
@@ryandejuan9934 Truly. People disparage Mary and Flo's input into the group, but each added a particular piece to the dynamics. When someone says that it was all about Diana and that anyone could support her that's not really so. I won't disparage Cindy Birdsong in any way because I believe she was/is a true talent, but when Flo left, the Supremes weren't the same Never mind that the girls' vocals weren't utilised properly, that 'three as one' aspect of the original group had been irrevocably shattered.
@@ryandejuan9934 this is true
@@andrewthornhill7042over time, Ross GREW to be very confident and comfortable as a vocalist. Initially she wasn't. Just very cocky. When Flo was lowkey being ousted, Ross wanted her out but in the same breath was scared that she wouldnt be able to carry the show without Flo.
Diana Ross performs with so much joy and has so much charisma in personality and voice that you can't help but fall in love with her. She was only 23 in this performance--truly born to be a star.

R.I.P Mary Wilson Always Understood The Assignment 🤩
Flo looks stunning here! She was a beautiful woman with what we now call a full figure. With her structure, it would have been ridiculous for her to look like a toothpick. 45 years after her passing, I'm still sad that it all spiraled down for her after her departure from The Supremes. I wish she could have lived to see her daughters grow up. Rest in peace Flo. You have many fans who love you.
Rest In Peace flo .. she’s such a rare and special person Cindy and still miss hearing her sing .. Dod you ever went to any of their concerts ?
Full figured was in back then so I dont know what the big deal was. And lets be honest. Cindy was bigger than Flo. Flo was just taller.
The short pixie hair was very flattering on Flo
@Giselle She was before my time too and I love her dearly. I think a gofundme needs to be started to put a better headstone on her grave. Something upright with a beautiful picture of her on it.

The orchestra on this show really elevated this song's already upbeat harmony and sound. Definitely complimented the girls' performance.
I always loved Flo with short hair 😍
Mary was fiercely beautiful in this performance...
I always loved her beautiful sleepy eyes that would burst open from time to time...
The camera blocking and direction on this number was topnotch...
The Ed Sullivan show was at the top of their game...
FLORENCE BALLARD & MARY WILSON was absolutely gorgeous!!
Flo's last appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and she is glowing!
Pretty ladies. Got some class girls!
Diana is just beaming in this performance! Mary looks stunningly hot, such a shame Flo would be out, she had an amazing soulful voice
It was a shame if Flo had any sense she would've let Diana leave which everyone knew was going to happen as soon as 66' If she thought she was that great she would've certainly taken over singing lead. However she let drugs, alcohol and a man take her down the wrong path ... A shame indeed.
@@anthonyyusef5897 why don't you shut your disrespectful mouth. You are always badmouthing Florence Ballard and it's getting boring now. Go tell the wall.
@@georginahawcroft8044 Anthony Yusef is absolutely correct! She could have taken the Supremes to the next level in the 70's! She decided to self destruct! She could have been victorious!
@@michellekirkendall818 So many so called Supremes fans hate on Diana so much; however, they overlook that Florence's erratic behavior put the business we call 'The Supremes' in jeopardy by her frequent missing of recording sessions, missing performances, showing up late, and outbursts in front of industry people. She did not act professionally in fulfilling her duties as a reliable member of the group. Can you imagine fans showing up at a concert and learning that someone again had to step in for Florence? Sure, she had experienced some trauma; however, the Supremes could not stop while she got herself back together.
This is wrong billing, because at this point they were STILL The Supremes. Their name hadn't been changed until later in 1967 to Diana Ross & The Supremes.
The billing officially changed in July/August, with the release of their next single “Reflections”
@@jfblog23 July, 1967 with their performance at the Hollywood Bowl, was the actual change of the group's name.
@@pianoman551000 Didn't Mary say in her book that she and Flo had no idea of the name change and saw it on the marquee?
@@wallysingelman5370 Yes! That threw Mary off balance. Mary knew that the name change was coming but didn't know when until Cindy officially joined the group.
April 1967 saw The Supremes as our Spring Concert at Univ. of Tenn. sing The Happening, released one month earlier in March, and many more songs. Great performance!
One of their best performances! All 3 ladies shine in their own way. We can see how regal Florence was and how accurate Diana is when she describes her as such. Mary’s coolness is on display here. Diana’s flare for the dramatics while blending said drama with fun is evident. All 3 bring their own brand to this iconic performance. “The Happening” was their 10th number one song and they proved that they could have hits that weren’t penned by Holland-Dozier-Holland.
When the movie was released, I went to the cinema to see the movie that this was the title song for and the movie wasn’t good but it was great to sit in the cinema listening to The Supremes’ sound filling the entire theater.
Frank DeVol joined HDH to write this hit so it wasn’t an exclusive HDH song.
Indeed, the supremes were a power house act... they all were amazing in this song... and 10 number 1 hits is a real feat! Did you see the movie because you knew the supremes were singing the sound track?
Matt C
Yes! The only reason I saw the movie was because of The Supremes singing the title song. I had already seen The Supremes on the big screen in some teenage beach movies so this wasn’t a first but I wouldn’t miss any chance to see “the girls” no matter the circumstances. I’d even sit through a really bad movie!
Who knew that six years later I’d be standing in lines that went around blocks to see Diana in Lady Sings the Blues?
The Supremes always had an affinity with movies and Hollywood.
Theatrical Diana with her fabulous distinctive voice, Mary looking incomparably beautiful, and voluptuous Flo obviously enjoying the limelight. Its just impossible to totally understand such exceptional talent all one can do is be mesmerized in amazement ;-)
I was an eleven year-old white boy when I watched this on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1967 and fell totally in love with Diana. I made the mistake of telling my Mom how beautiful I thought Diana was and she told me that whatever girl I brought home when I was older had better be white. Well, I did bring home several white girls later on and had disastrous relationships with all of them. After wasting many years with the wrong women I ended up marrying a beautiful black woman who was also a singer and my Mom finally accepted my choice just before she died, when I was 46 years-old. I am still with my beautiful black wife to this day and ecstatically happy with her. Sometimes, who we really are comes out when we are just kids and parents shouldn't try to change them. I lost many years with my family because they wouldn't accept my choice to be with a black woman and can never get that time back with them.
Glad you were able to find the Woman that made you Happy..no matter the Nationality she was..
The point it she Made You Happy & Love You❤
I think this is my all time favorite by them, So upbeat, and wonderful vocals. Their dresses are beautiful, as are they!
Ed Sullivan must have really loved this group because they made many appearances on his show. So much so, he simply called them the girls.

They are cranking out The Supremes' performances now after Mary's passing! Thank you!
Yes, they are Jay. I want to see "In And Out of Love" performance. This is when Ms. Mary wore her blond wig. And I think it's the same show, were the ladies performed with The Temptations. Performing each other songs.
The words to this song are surreal for Blondie. This is LITERALLY like her LIFE STORY regarding her music career!! Her facial expressions on certain lyrics could tell it all on here!!!
What’s even more chilling is that this is her last performance on Ed Sullivan.
They were happening!
Wow. This could have been Florence Ballard's song after she was dropped. The lyrics really describe what happened to her. 😪
Several posts on here suggests this is literally loosely based on her show business career. These lyrics are almost intentionally describing solely her.

Berry Gordy wanted the Motown sound to be heavy on bass. That was unique, as songs were usually light on the bass. All of the Supremes song has heavy bass, and this really adds depth to the overall sound.

Nothing but magic when the Supremes performed. And no lip syncing. Something about Diana’s child like voice and the beautiful background vocals that made The Supremes stand head and shoulders above all the other girl groups in that era. And they had so many great hits that still sounds good. RIP Mary & Flo. Gone but never will be for gotten.
Diana carried herself well, along with having a terrifically good singing voice, femininity, and dressed formally in long evening gowns. The Supremes looked....welll....supreme --certainly against the casualness of competitors and the times, when hippie sloppiness and weird psychedelic garb began to work its way through certain socio-economic classes. There was a revolt among white Boomers to dressing up---from which we really haven't recovered to any meaningful degree.
