The Cars became famous in my second year of college (1978-1979). I always liked Ric's voice and many of the songs he wrote. Its hard to believe that both Ric & Ben Orr are gone. At least we have UA-cam that allows us to listen to them forever.

In addition to the fact that it was a Top 20 hit here in the US, hitting #15 in 1986, went to #1 on the Rock chart and #8 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Not too shabby 😉
It's heartbreaking to hear of Ric's passing today. Been a fan since the first Cars album. In my car, I have collections of my favorite music on several CDs that I call my "Yikes Collections". Yikes-Volume 2 starts off with "Emotion In Motion". Every time I have that CD on, and my sister rides with me, we both get emotional, because of the compassion this song conveys. Not too many songs can beat it for it's simple beauty, it's great melody and it's heartfelt lyrics. "I'll hold on to you, until the stars no longer blink". The stars will continue to blink and when you look up, and look a little closer, you'll now see Ric smiling. May he rest in Peace. May his music live forever, and it will!

Every time I watch this video I get tears in my eyes when the girl wakes up and Ric holds her in his arms. Some things in life you take for granted but actual true love betueen two people is such a special bond especially when so few people in this world either have it have had it or never get to experience. A line from a Who song states that in life one and one dont make two but they make one, kind of like two people are so close to each other that they actually become one person. In this somewhat mixed up world it is nice to know that actual true love between two people is possible and one of the most special things a person can have and experience.
This video is actually inspired heavily by Legend with Tom Cruise. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it. It was before Cruise was a megastar and started turning out the same cookie cutter films. This one is actually very very good.

Most of The Cars' songs are upbeat and fun rock, but Ric doesn't get near enough credit for this beautiful slow song. It's as overlooked of an 80s hit as any!
This is one of the very best slow songs I have ever heard. It is nearly perfect, and that's coming from someone that doesn't fawn over slow songs. I can think of a few girls I've known that are the epitome of this song.
Good point mthrswd -I'm thinking its because The Cars were mostly a party band and didn't do typical power ballad/sappy love songs, so when they did do a slow song, it feels more meaningful.

It's heartbreaking to hear of Ric's passing today. Been a fan since the first Cars album. In my car, I have collections of my favorite music on several CDs that I call my "Yikes Collections". Yikes-Volume 2 starts off with "Emotion In Motion". Every time I have that CD on, and my sister rides with me, we both get emotional, because of the compassion this song conveys. Not too many songs can beat it for it's simple beauty, it's great melody and it's heartfelt lyrics. "I'll hold on to you, until the stars no longer blink". The stars will continue to blink and when you look up, and look a little closer, you'll now see Ric smiling. May he rest in Peace. May his music live forever, and it will!

Every time I watch this video I get tears in my eyes when the girl wakes up and Ric holds her in his arms. Some things in life you take for granted but actual true love betueen two people is such a special bond especially when so few people in this world either have it have had it or never get to experience. A line from a Who song states that in life one and one dont make two but they make one, kind of like two people are so close to each other that they actually become one person. In this somewhat mixed up world it is nice to know that actual true love between two people is possible and one of the most special things a person can have and experience.
I like that line too, it's from The Bargain.
This video is actually inspired heavily by Legend with Tom Cruise. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it. It was before Cruise was a megastar and started turning out the same cookie cutter films. This one is actually very very good.

Most of The Cars' songs are upbeat and fun rock, but Ric doesn't get near enough credit for this beautiful slow song. It's as overlooked of an 80s hit as any!
This is one of the very best slow songs I have ever heard. It is nearly perfect, and that's coming from someone that doesn't fawn over slow songs.
I can think of a few girls I've known that are the epitome of this song.
Good point mthrswd -I'm thinking its because The Cars were mostly a party band and didn't do typical power ballad/sappy love songs, so when they did do a slow song, it feels more meaningful.

That's true. I wonder if it's also because Ben Orr usually did the ballads anyway, and hearing Ric sing a song like this was unique. But yeah, just taking it on its own terms, it's very beautiful and sincere (and yet not sappy).

I can see the fact that it's also their usual fun carriage and attitude that also makes it so catchy. I want to smash the speaker when I hear those songs you know are just fishing hooks dangled by rapey creeps to snag an emo chick when her guard is down. You have to hand them that, that this song isn't another chick trap!
