They are still being written, and still being sung. But they are no longer being marketed. Autotune is what sells now and it’s sad and soulless. But great songwriters still exist and are still perfecting their craft, they are just not so widely distributed by the profit oriented music industry anymore.

Absolutely one of the saddest and most haunting songs I have ever come across in my 45 years of life. For some reason, I am drawn to sad, haunting stories and Melodies like this. In my opinion, this is the best song he ever wrote. I remember listening to this when I was back in high school, and feeling like it applied to my life in some respects. I have lived with a disability for virtually my whole life, and I have always felt like an outsider and an outcast, even among the people who should be most accepting and understanding. And so this song has always had a special place in my heart.
@@Rusty-mv1nc and yet, that isolation and separation from the group at-large has benefited my life immensely over the years. I don't rely on others to validate my on feelings of self-worth and value to the world. I have learned to rely on my own good sense and judgment and wisdom, along with accomplishing things to give me that sense of value on purpose. I see others around me who dedicate their lives, so it seems, to molding themselves into what they think everyone around them wants them to be or thinks they should be. It has given me a certain Inner Strength that I have depended on heavily over the course of my life. Friends are a great gift but good friends have been few and far between. I don't need people. I like having them around if they are genuine and good people. But I know that I can also live and be happy without them.
@@kylienagy8381 if you only knew! If you could comprehend how incredibly difficult and frustrating it is to try to socialize with people and make friends when you are living with poor vision your entire life. If you could only see the indifference, and how people feel they cannot relate to me, or believe that I am really so different from them. Even among my own family, there are those with whom I have no relationship because of conflict over what they believe I can or can't do, or what they think I should or shouldn't be doing. Or, imagine been trying to get a job in that field, only to have the person who is interviewing you tell you outright that they can't imagine how I can do the job because I don't see as well as they do. They imagine that if they had the same loss of vision, they wouldn't be able to function. And so they assume that I can't either. And I never get a chance to prove them wrong. That's the kind of Outkast I'm talking about. But it's not all bad for me. I have an amazing wife who likewise grew up with her own disability, and can relate too much of what I have experienced. I learned, many many years ago, through many difficulties, never to spend my life trying to measure up to someone else's expectations or beliefs of me. The result of such freedom is loneliness. That's what I'm talkin about. But I am grateful for such difficulties in my life, it has forged a certain strength of character that serves me well. And my two little girls, and boy to come, will grow up knowing and learning for themselves the differences are to be celebrated, not avoided or shunned.
Richard's wife once asked him what he was writing and he told her that it was probably the worst thing he'd written and he would dispose of it. She asked him to sing it for her. When Richard had finished, his wife offered her opinion which was that it could be the best he's written so far. Thanks to Richards wife for saving this wonderful classic. It's not only one of the best songs I've heard in my 68 years on this earth but it's a story of human behaviour that we must never excuse but sadly have to accept as being among us until the end of time.

I'd forgotten this song until I heard it in a store just last week. My ears perked up and it was instant "Oh, yeah!" What a great song. Lyrical, haunting, amazing.
My father recently told me that I loved this song when I was around three years old. Apparently I liked most of the music he listened to and kept on dancing, but this song must have been my favorite, he said. I'm 33 now and happy that he got me to “rediscover“ this beautiful song. Thanks, Papa! :-)
I dedicate this in memory of my best friend John Viviano from Deposit, New York who died Saturday at age 40. It's a reminder of our 90s childhood and the way our towns radio station WIYN 94.7 use to be and this song had heavy airplay on that station. The lyrics "we use to walk along the river" is what we referred to the mighty Delaware.
Probably this is a fantasy of his own. He imagines what would happen if he do this and then what will have to tell when gets caught by the police... It is crazy but some people like this that's why so many serial killers exist.
yes -i agree !!its also sad that he split with cynthia rhodes-- she was so pretty and talented --she's the one from dirty dancing (the dance instructor)
Same mate even though the tragic side is fictional I relate to a lot of the lyrics? Its a song of reflection and it is brilliant so I am happy people don't mind hearing it. Thankyou to everyone who has been giving wonderful comments about the songs that I have been playing. Bless you all 🙏
Трогательная..душевная..милая сердцу песня из моего прошлого! С таким же удовольствием и трепетом я слушаю её сейчас! Шикарное исполнение и прекрасный голос! Мира всем и добра!
Just wanted to add that this song was a massive hit. According to Richard Marx, it was his second biggest hit globally after Right Here Waiting. Its fun to think an old edgy, more cerebral song was snubbed in it's day, but this song was not one of them. My parents were both DJs at pop radio stations at the time, and 10 year old me was often allowed to man the request line. Listeners wouldn't let an hour pass without requesting it again. Although it wasnt requested as much as Ice Ice Baby the year before. After a while, i just hung up on those people. "Can you play Ice Ice--" *click*
He's extremely successful! According to Wikipedia, "He is the only male artist in history to have his first seven singles reach the Top 5 on the Billboard charts and has scored a total of 14 #1 singles, both as a performer and songwriter/producer." He's written a lot of songs for others as well, such as Luther Vandross, which won him a Grammy for "Dance With My Father."
Mystical, scary, touching, different, timeless, emotional, makes you feel afraid of the devil out there in this world, and at the same time confident in all the good there is also out there in this world....what a song!
when he says, "we used to walk down by the river she loved to watch the sun go down". I sometimes kind of have a tear run down from my eye. ( it gets you right in the heart).
I was 17 when this song came out, and it resonated with me right from the first time I heard it (I'm autistic, I always knew what it was to be "different" and therefore shunned). All these years later, and it still gives me chills. Such a beautiful, tragic, powerful track.
This song was just played on a UK morning show This Morning, they are having a summer session of 80's & 90's songs and this guy was singing this. I immediately shazamed it. What a beautiful song. I love this song the first time I heard it as a teenager, even with less ability to understand it from my lacking of english at that time, and when I fully understand the lyrics and the supposedly real story it was based on, so hauntingly beautiful, a timeless beauty. some days like this I miss the 90s and its vibe, can't believe it was 30yrs ago
When Marx sings the line "I think about my life gone by, how it done me wrong...there's no escape for me this time..all of my rescues are gone"..its sound like he is breaking down and weeping. The rest of the song is him trying to keep his cool. A truly sad song indeed

I've had this song on repeat ( endless repeat) since July. The lyrics describe how I feel, but I can't actively express or explain how I feel, so this song does it for me.. I was always different, never liked and struggled. So this song has been great .. it's one of my favourites 😍

The actor Robert Conrad, who passed away yesterday, played the cop in this video. When Conrad was a young man studying theater, he also took singing lessons. His voice coach was Richard Marx's father, Dick Marx, a Jazz pianist and arranger.
I did not know that and I've been a Robert Conrad fan since the 70s, when I used to watch The Wild Wild West in reruns (I used to watch Baa Baa Black Sheep/Black Sheep Squadron as well).
James Nolan, did not know that. BOB was a Chicago boy and my mother talked with him at length one time and told me he was one of the nicest men she ever met. He will be missed. Love this music and the dark theme. Kudos to Richard Marx and his father.
I miss the days when music like this one had a special message behind it, where the lyrics of the song painted a picture for the listener and told a story unlike todays music.
We still have some good songs. Not in the same abundance than we used to have though. This is a very clever song. What's sad is that the metaphors are lost on most people.
This song and Phil Collins, In the Air Tonight (I hate that song and refuse to listen to it in the car because whilst taking Drivers Ed that song, Danger Zone and I’ve Had The Time of My Life were the soundtrack to the State Police accident video they showed).
I was played this Song by my Mother as a young kid, our relationship grew between this Song. My Mother's now dead and haunts me every time I listen to this Song. It makes me think of how great I had it with a loving mother whom cared for me... :/ What I'm saying is.. appreciate your Parents, never know when they'll be gone

I remember the horror of hearing this song and watching the video. It scared the hell out of me yet had to keep watching it, listening to it. Just watched it here and same feeling. It really is an amazing song, the music, the filmclip, seems so real. Probably the most memorable song of my lifetime.
I had family that lived not far from Hazard in Loup City and Ravenna, drove through that small Nebraska town dozens of times. When this song came out it got the town buzzing, and I still remember the first time listening to this song while in Hazard, it was crazy to hear mention of it by such a great artist. 😊😊
Such a hauntinly great song...sadly quality music like this is now obsolete..60s to late 90s certainly were the best decades of real talented musicians
I know exactly how you feel (although about 20 years earlier). I grew up with early 70s catchy pop ditties and then heard "Vincent" by Don McClean. It was like listening to poetry put to music.

This song has been in my head for nearly 20 years. Yet i only heard it once as a kid. I forgot the lyrics but kept the haunting melody. I just happened to click on Richard Marx Right here Waiting for you and saw this song as a suggestion. Clicked it and nearly started crying. Hauntingly beautiful song that intend to listen to over and over again!!!
I cant believe you wrote this! This is creapy.. This was played in my birthday when I was turning one.. And I'm 21 years old now and have been going around for 20 years remembering only the melody and not a single lyric. So this morning I just woke up with the melody in my head, first time it occurred to me to use sound hound.. And now I found it! :D
Xheliz mmmm tell me more things you remember from the age of 1.
gunner gallian Obviously I didn't remember it on my own, growing up I was shown videos of this party but it was when all this technology wasn't available and the tape was in VHS so I haven't watched it in years! But I always remembered the melody
Xheliz i was just talking to a person before you about feeling and remembering pain as an infant and he was deluded. He said he remembers things from when he was one. So i came to this video and saw your comment and thought ooo not again. But yeh it makes sense with you but that guy was a nut
gunner gallian Hahah it's okay I understand it sounded a little nutty. But it was a long story short and I could've have expressed myself better.

Such masterpieces are not written anymore... Love 80's and 90's
Yes they are AND they're written by Richard Marx! ♥️🔥
They are still being written, and still being sung. But they are no longer being marketed. Autotune is what sells now and it’s sad and soulless. But great songwriters still exist and are still perfecting their craft, they are just not so widely distributed by the profit oriented music industry anymore.
Listen to Mac DeMarco… now THAT is an artist. There’s plenty of amazing music now, it just appeals to younger generations!

I hear you. "Prejudiced eyes" resonates with my own experiences, its hard when you don't fit with the norm.
You are NOT an outcast. You are a human being. Please know that you are desperately needed in this world..
@@twosocks1976 you're preaching to the choir...

Согласен, Ирина.
A once in a century song. Sad that Richard Marx never got his due. What a voice!❤️
It did reach number one in Australia
He was huge in the US.
Still has an amazing voice! Better with age imo!

❤👍
Muito bom, mas me pergunto: quem matou Mary?
Pois é...a dúvida permanece. O rapaz era mesmo o culpado ou não...

When Marx sings the line "I think about my life gone by, how it done me wrong...there's no escape for me this time..all of my rescues are gone"..its sound like he is breaking down and weeping. The rest of the song is him trying to keep his cool.

The actor Robert Conrad, who passed away yesterday, played the cop in this video. When Conrad was a young man studying theater, he also took singing lessons. His voice coach was Richard Marx's father, Dick Marx, a Jazz pianist and arranger.

Very interesting, I loved Robert Conrad since I was a young girl and first remember seeing him on The Wild Wild West.
