An excellent video of my home town. It is heart breaking to see Middlesbrough Rd. in this abandoned condition. This was a bustling community of hard working, God fearing and kindly people. All gone.

4:27 Birkbeck’s - they used to rent tellies out - ours was notorious for breaking down - if they sent out Jack, our usual repairman, he could fix the problem in the house itself - once my dad decided that we could have colour, if it broke down (and it often did), if Jack came, he usually fixed it in the house - I think he spent three hours doing it once - if they sent out the work experience lads from their Redcar branch, they would take it in, leave us an old black and white set temporarily - but it would be weeks before we got it back again! This was before the days of Radio Rentals, Visionhire, DER and Granada!

I can only imagine how it must feel for the people who are still around now who lived in Southbank and Grangetown years ago, seeing vast parts of their community just wiped off the map forever, bustling communities and areas of heavy industry replaced by nothing but bare wasteland. It’s been a very sobering experience for me finding these videos and seeing how completely different the area is today compared to years gone by, and to think all the people who walk the streets today with no clue whatsoever as to what has been lost.

Older people must have so many more memories and tales to tell. The change for me is mind blowing so it must be even more for them. Such a shame it all ended up as it has with communities split up and gone forever.

sadly these things happen and have happened all over the country. slum clearance. better standards of living. buildings become not fit for purpose

What's worse the dumpy old houses and shops or the bit of grass with a bird mouth fence after they're pulled down? That music is fable of a failed race by hawkwind

The photo of Heagneys staff stood outside the shop, my mother Margaret Vickers is the second female from the right on the front row, aged 17 years old.

One of my favourite things about making these videos is when people share their own memories and connections to the pictures or location. I do genuinely find it fascinating & interesting and I thank you for watching and commenting. I sometimes struggle getting 'Now' pictures of South Bank high street because the space that the buildings once occupied doesn't seem as big as i thought I remembered it in my late teens early twenties Ive sometimes wasted rare afternoons of free time getting totally the wrong angles. kind regards bvgb921

So many memories of growing up in South Bank watching these videos. My whole world was going to St. Peters Church, Napier Street school and Nana's house on Pym Street. Remember going to Mr. Spencers corner shop and getting a few groceries and putting it on the ticket till Dad was paid on Friday! Going shopping with Mam at Jimmy Dents butcher shop, went to same school as Josephine Dent his daughter, Greenups fruit and veg across from the church, Sparks for yummy cream cakes, Griffins on Middlesbrough Rd for fresh fish, Heagneys, Hintons, the Co-op, Uptons for a new bike, so many great years in the 60's and early 70's, and never forget the market on Fridays when it was on the Road the old Post Office was on near Bennetts Corner. Fresh fish from Whitby, "broken biscuits" by the bag, fruit and veg stalls and always a hot cup of tea! It really was a good place to grow up.

Hello Marian. Thankyou for watching an commenting. I really enjoyed reading your memories. I was brought up in Grangetown and my memories of both areas are 1980 onwards so the change taking place was well underway. Older people in my family describe the area as you have just described, when they where bustling little towns, I think it’s probably why I’m fascinated by the world before my time tbh. Once again Thankyou for watching and have a nice day. Kind regards

Another great but sad film. One thing puzzling me though about halfway through there was a trolley bus marked up for Ormesby definitely not North Ormesby I didn't realise Ormesby was ever connected to the trollet bus network.

Good morning John and a big Thankyou for watching. I’m not sure why that it is tbh and now I’m curious myself. Probably a good reason but i didn’t think they went that far too

I used to live in Netherfields near Ormesby and one of my earliest memories was walking to Normanby with my mam to get the trolley bus to see my aunt in South Bank and there was definitly nowhere to catch the trolley bus in Ormesby. Very weird.

    • @arthurvasey

The trolley buses went a circuitous route in both directions starting and ending at North Ormesby, going via Cargo Fleet, South Bank, then , at the junction of Middlesbrough Road and Normanby Road, they could either go up Normanby Road to the top, work its way up to Eston, then along that busy road as far as Birchington Avenue, all the way to the bottom of Birchington Avenue, along Bolckow Road, past the Lyric bingo (which used to be a cinema before my time), under the bridge, then to South Bank and back to North Ormesby - or, at South Bank , go to Eston via Grangetown and up Whale Hill!

Trolley buses didn't run to Ormesby ever, but Noirth Ormesby was also known as Ormesby, why I have no idea.

I've not lived in the area for over 30 years and it's shocking to see so many buildings demolished and not replaced. It must be even more depressing for those who still live there, seeing their towns erased from the landscape.

Hello Michael. Thankyou for watching. I enjoyed reading your posts as I find other peoples memories of those times fascinating given the enormous change that has taken place. Those days certainly had more of a community who looked out for each other

Emigrated to Australia 50 years ago this November, (2023). Very strange to see these pictures. I was a conductor on the TRTB and the United, also a stocktaker at Cargo Fleet at various times in the sixties. No demolition in those days, houses were at a premium. A mate's wife came from Steele Crescent, beautiful home.

Hello Stewart. A big Thankyou for watching an commenting. You have seen a much bigger change than i have as my memories of the area start 1980 onwards so the demolitions & change was already well underway.
