Welcome to a rather personal video which I hope you'll find interesting! I wanted to sit down and talk about which charities I give to and why. Some of them follow the Effective Altruism principles and some don't! This video isn't to boast about how holy I am - but to start a conversation about how people choose where to give money and why! I'd love to know in the comments which causes you support and why. Thank you so much for watching, and of course don't forget to subscribe!

    ↣ Are you a full time UA-camr?
I work full time online as a 'Digital Nomad' which means I get to travel the world with my fiance (Ed) and not be tied to living in any specific country. I teach courses on Udemy (check out my profile here - www.udemy.com/u/louisecroft/), and run several companies, plus of course blogging and UA-cam.
↣ When did you start blogging?
I created my blog in 2012 when I was living in America. I was thrifting so much that I wanted to start sharing my outfits online and inspiring other people to look in charity shops. Now it's become all about my Digital Nomad journey and what it's like to be a female nomad.
↣ How can I become a Digital Nomad?
Check out my playlist of advice to help you get started: • DIGITAL NOMAD STARTER ...
    ↣ Where's your accent from?
I'm from the South of England but I currently live out of a suitcase travelling all over the world.
↣ Where is your favourite place in the world?
I fell deeply in love with Gili Air when we visited as a paradise getaway, but Chiang Mai is my favourite place to live. Plus of course, there's no place like home (Dorset in England).

Digital Nomad Girl - one mug add two lemon & ginger tea bags - add one whole lemon juiced and the peel chopped add one tablespoon of honey & add boiling water to make a strong tea - that will cure that cold along with some sleep 😉 that concoction works for me every time xoxo

I love hearing about the charities other people donate to! I really want to read that book, I know about effective altruism but only via people talking about it online.

Great video! Have you done much volunteering? I think it's a great way to give if you have no money to give but you have time. (also somethings up with the on-screen text, unsure if you're aware)

    • @digitalnomadgirl
      @digitalnomadgirl  5 років тому +1

Yeah the text seems to have got corrupted on export - such a shame! Yes I love volunteering!! I am finding it harder to do while travelling because most places want a long-ish commitment, but I still do it when I can. When I was based in the UK I used to do loads and it's great because it's fun for you too! Charity shops are my personal favourite way (obviously!) but also anything at events, or of course with dogs!

I've been thinking about to Kiva too! So far I've been mostly giving to MSF, a German charity supporting refugees and I like leaving money in the churches I visit

Catching up with Louise! Super interesting topic that deffo needs highlighting & promoting. I think regular charitable giving is concentrated in small areas within society _ potentially to do with a perception or reality of instability of employment & poor wage growth. However we\people often forget how privileged we are and how the self denial of one coffee a month can make a big difference if donated.
I’m reading effective altruism at the moment, so far so interesting! I didn’t realise that you could give to them directly so thanks for that. Cool Earth sounds v interesting. I love that you mention considering your own carbon foot print & doing your best to mitigate it _ I’m sure a lot of us would be less inclined to self examination.
I must get started on Kiva & micro credit loans in general _ thanks for eco, sing how it works! So far I donate to an educational charity for children and advocates donations to people on the street but your good points have reminded me to get on with formalising a regular donation to an established homeless charity in my city....which has been on my to do list for an age!
Really like that you mention giving back to your community too _ I don’t think you ended to discount it due to EA rules. So lovely that you have the active outreach church community. So interesting and off course you are a mega charity shopper and proponent to others to follow suit!

I prefer to volunteer my time and energy rather than donate money. I have been volunteering in various roles for about 30 years... religious, non-religious and healthcare related areas. I've also worked for several non-profit organizations, where the staff is always worth its weight in gold. But I'm always dumbfounded by the lack of fiscal intelligence and responsibility, as well as a very common holier-than-thou, closed-minded attitude, within the management of these companies. They are often maintained as status symbols which lose sight of their mission and become more focused on making money than for-profit companies do. This results in frequent turnover of highly educated, highly qualified people, who become disgruntled and quit. I've seen everyone from cleaning crew to physicians quit in disgust of the management practices of so many charities. I recommend people investigate all organizations thoroughly before making monetary contributions. Money is just a tool like any other, which in the wrong hands can harm as much as it can help. This goes for all companies you would choose to patronize, not just charities. I've always prioritized a personal/professional lifestyle which allows me a maximum amount of discretionary free-time (time being your only true asset). I've also lived quite alternatively to most people (in vehicles, out of a backpack, etc.) which has exposed me to many issues where I have been able to give back. Since my resources are time and accessibility based, it makes more sense for me to be hands-on. Now, as a digital nomad, I am finding all sorts of things to become involved with and I'm only 'working' about 5 hours per month to cover my travels. But I am still learning how to do this whole full-time travel lifestyle thing, lol. Cheers!

Yeah giving your time and doing your research are definitely both good ideas! I also agree that voting with your wallet in a consumer sense is a great plan too. It's the only way we can affect change is just with $1 at a time :)
