The Genius Asian gave me a great idea to solve my problem of getting a lost cleaning brush out of my 16 ft dryer duct that has two angled turns in the ceiling above my dryer. Thank you!
Just finished cleaning my duct with your $1 brush!! Thank you for assisting in keeping this project super cheap. I had to use my glue gun to keep the bristles in place because the coat hanger would break if I twisted it too hard. The job was super easy with one person inside and one person out side, taking turns pulling the brush through the vent. I would not use the drill set you presented from home depot as there are way too many videos of people having that thing break.

1- If your vent was completely clogged your blow-a-string-thru-the-vent would not work. 2- I am shocked someone used the periscope behind the wall. I always thought those were for the space between the dryer and the wall. 3- loved your utilizing a $1 broom to make a 4" diameter dryer vent brush.
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. Here are our answers: 1. Long before the vent is completely clogged, you will notice that your cloth will take twice as long to dry. When it is clogged only a little our dryer's sensors already showed warning. If the vent is only half clogged, your dryer would no longer dry clothes. 2. Our floor inside the house is higher than the crawl space which is under the house. The vent is in the crawl space. So the dryer inside the house is higher, the vent connects the dryer and then goes down the crawl space and then out of the house. Thus periscope is the only option. 3. Yes, a broom is a high volume commodity product that can be sold at much lower price. Thank you for your comments.
Another way to clean your dryer vent is like I use to do . You need a leaf blower , a ball of string and a couple of rags . 1) disconnect your dryer vent from the back of the dryer 2) tie a small cloth ( wash cloth size ) in its center very good 3) put the cloth in the dryer opening a few inches 4) use the leaf blower to blow the cloth out the outside dryer vent 5) take a bigger cloth and tie the string around it very tight 6) pull the larger cloth through the dryer vent.. I did mine several times to get it extra clean . Hope this helps somebody ..

Thanks for posting. Going to Home Depot after work to see what they have available for duct cleaning. You convinced me not to use a periscope transition for my connection. It would be too hard to clean.
My brother did it by tying a ping-pong ball to a string, then a plastic loofah. Make sure you tie the other end of the string to something inside, or you risk the whole mess winding up in the duct.
Thank you for sharing your tips. When using snakes, you need to be gentle because the snake is designed for sewer pipe and sewer pipe is much stronger than vent pipe.

The ability for you to "push" ropes is zero, the ability for you to "push" wires is better, and snake has the "best" ability for you to "push". However even snakes stopped at the corner/elbow or was caught at the middle (especially if the vent is a flexible vent). So the answer is yes, it may work if you don't have many corners, but using a tennis ball has the lowest probability to damage your vent.
Yes better design can make cleaning easier. But since one end of the vent is above floor and some portion of the vent is underfloor, above floor and underfloor are not the same level, it is difficult to connect them without a periscope connect.

You spent a lot of time and effort for a simple solution ... had the solution from the start But I would have used mechanics wire to initially feed the rope instead of a leaf blower. the cheap brush was good tech
Different houses under different conditions are different. My house's duct is quite long, the mechanics wire is not long enough, also the periscope is quite difficult with cable type, so I invented the blower plus tennis ball solution.

I used a dryer cleaning kit. As I used the screwdriver to drive the rods with the brush into the air duct, the rod broke leaving behind three segments with the brush behind. May I know how to get it out?
You could have used the brush only from the kit and used the rope+tennis ball in this video, easier and safer without damaging the duct. The video did show 3 segments in the duct and very tight, that was the reason we invented an easier way. do you have periscope on the path? Are there many hard turns in the duct? suppose A=brush end ; B=broken rod end; Since the end A with the brush is always centered, this end will not touch the duct wall and stuck. The end B is broken, so it may touch the wall and it may stuck if there are turns or periscope. So you should use another stick to push B end, to forward direction (B=>A). If there are no turns or periscope from the B end, you may also try to push A end (A=>B direction). If your configuration is different, then you should think carefully the risks, and move to the directions of the easiest.
Asian Genius, Thanks for your response, I guess there is a sharp turn. I drove the kit from the duct opening in the basement. The other end is above the ground. Probably, the duct goes vertically up about 10 feet and turns an angle towards the other end 10 ft from the turn.
I would buy the lint eater kit and buy 1 additional pack of rods. Use a cordless drill. 1 thing to always remember NEVER put the drill in reverse. This kit is great for the DIYer.

yes, as shown in the video, I bought the $20 kits, it did not work because my duct was long with periscope. There is very high risk of duct damage for my configuration. If manufacturers made lint traps in the the machine that actually trapped lint, this would not be a problem. LG lint traps in particular are very poorly designed and leak a lot of lint.
The white vent tubing THROW AWAY, and replace. that hose is no longer code compliant. If you are going to DIY, buy a kit don't make a dryer kit. it will break and it will get lost in the tubing. FYI I've cleaned thousand of dryers.
yes, we replace old vent and comply local code. As for the various tools we discussed in this video, some tools may meet your needs, other tools don't meet your needs specially if you have a super long duct. If you are not a professional cleaning thousand of dryers, if you only do it once a year, a DIY option is pretty attractive. We would like to hear from you which DIY tools do you think will break, we could either make it different way to improve it or purchase that ready-made component only.

If you say that most people probably have these things, then can't they go out and get a stupid brush, too? If they can't because of time and to they need to clean the vent now, what's the difference between building this thing and going to HD? Same amount of time!
We have shown many different ways and tools for our viewers, you don't have to use all of them, only choose those you have in your garage and are suitable for your situation/configuration. If you have a very short duct, what ever you get from HD would work, if it is a long duct as we have shown in the video then you need to find a way not to damage the duct with periscope. I know many people look down on people who want to save money. Some DIY people are poor, some are just thrifty, other people prefer to re-use and share tools to save the earth. Hope this video can help a lot of different people. A lot of people also think time is money. It is true that time is money for some people, if they can use the saved time to make more money. For other people after they have saved time, they can't use that saved time to make money, then saving time would not work for them.
I can help you for free if you are local near me. If you can't do it yourself, alternatively you can ask a friend to watch this video to see if he can help you. If you don't own a blower see if there are weekly gardeners blowing the leaves on your street, even if they are hired by your neighbors, just give them a bottle of water for them to rest for 10 minutes so that you can borrow their blower to clean the duct.

Try changing your vent duct. Those aren’t safe or illegal anymore in many states.
yes, a lot of new building codes do not allow flexible duct. Nevertheless the tricks used in this video still apply regardless of the kind of duct.

Yes, since failure to clean the dryer is the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires, we can assume leaving rope may not be fire safe.
