Dryer cleaning should be done at least every couple of years if not every year. Our neighbors house had a fire in their dryer on Thanksgiving and caused so much damage it took a year before they could move back home.

A much easier way is just to connect leaf blower to the Duct. Much much easier. Done in a Jiffy! But thank you for a detailed video. Great Tips.

I’ll bet a leaf blower will not do nearly as good of a job getting all the lint out.

This is, hands down, the best UA-cam instructional video that I've ever seen. It's clear, concise, well filmed and edited, with no music pulsing during the instruction part to distract. You have a calm, clear voice, too, that makes listening a pleasure. Lastly, I love how you address things that could happen, why it matters, and how to avoid those things, and you give helpful tips (ie black electrical tape), too! Wonderful video. Thank you!

This was so helpful! I’m a single woman who proudly owns her own home, but we lost my stepdad to cancer a couple of years ago, and he was the guy who helped me fix everything. There are tons of people like me, and what you all do - filling in the gaps for those of us who don’t have someone to help us out with this stuff, or the funds to pay someone else - is not only a wonderful public service, but a great gift of kindness. That doesn’t even begin to cover how clear, simple, and unintimidating your instructions were - thank you so very much! I’ll be picking up a dryer clean out kit tomorrow!

Your video potentially saved us from a house fire. I bought the product you mentioned in the video together with 12 foot extensions. I ended up using all 8 rods to clean the vent; a full 24 feet. My wash room is in the center of the house and the vent goes straight up to nearly top of my roof. There were 2 x 5 gallon buckets full of lint when I finished. The product was very easy to use. One tip is to roll the electrical tape in a fashion so that it does not come unraveled. Especially if you create a flap as in the video. You can test this by putting your glove over the tape and rotating the drill slowly. If it stays flat, you have it in the correct rotation. Another tip is to have a service technician clean inside the dryer itself. This involves removing the back panel. There was another 5-gallon bucket full of link inside the dryer itself. Inside we found burnt lint. So don’t hesitate to clean your dryer vent and check your dryer yearly. Thank you for this video.

Out of curiosity, how long did you go without cleaning that vent? I just did mine after 3 years (newish homeowner and kind of forgot about it until right now) and while I had a bit of lint, it was nowhere close to that much.

    • @allendana9601
      @allendana9601 10 місяців тому

I did not clean the vent for about 1 year. The root cause was that my really old dryer was not filtering that well. Because the vent was clogged, the moisture in the vent was higher, causing the lint stick to the walls of the vent faster than normal. After replacing the dryer with a new model, the vent does not have nearly as much lint. In fact, my new dryer has a feature to detect clogged vent. I encourage everyone to regularly check you dryer vent for built up. @@kounurasaka5590

As a former city volunteer with Police and Fire and Rescue I have heard many stories about house fires due to dryers. Once a year cleaning is a minimum cleaning schedule. If you dry multiple loads a week, every 6 months is much safer especially if you have a family with children. As with changing batteries in fire alarms every six months, I like the schedule using spring and autumn equinox to remember to do household 6-month chores, also day light savings time is popular with some people. Thank you for posting this DIY dryer cleaning video. Very easy to follow and I love the type of kit you are using.

My dryer is drying clothes faster. I learned this important dryer vent cleaning technique from your video. I have told some friends, and coworkers about me helping neighbors clean dryer vents with rods and brushes connected to a drill. Some comment,”that’s cool.” I heard a neighbor’s daughter say,”do you clean dryer vents all the time?” Yes to prevent dryer fires. I like the Gardus LintEater Pro dryer vent cleaning system kit featured in the video. I put electrical tape on each rod to keep the heads of rods together during the drill powered dryer vent cleaning process. The kit is worth it to prevent dryer fires.

I almost paid a ridiculous amount of money to have someone else clean my dryer vent but someone mentioned checking UA-cam. I am so lucky I came across your video. As many have said, your instructions and tips are easy to follow with confidence, your voice is clear and calming, and I like being able to support your efforts and help myself out by following your link to the kit. I'll be paying a fraction of the cost to get my dryer vent clean the first time - just the cost of the brush kit. Then I can clean my dryer vent as often as I want/need to for free. Without you - specifically - not some other DIY person - I wouldn't have felt that I could do this. Thank you so much.

I just DID pay a ridiculous amount of money to have mine cleaned. I called the guy who replaced what was very dangerous plastic flexible duct with metal duct 8 years ago and it hadn't been cleaned since. It just occurred to me. I didn't even ask him the price up front because I recalled the price he told me when he did the duct was very reasonable. When he got here he said it would be $179. First, I hate when people price things to the "9's", but research has shown people will almost always buy the $179 item over the $180 price someone else offers...almost without fail and often not even considering other factors. Secondly, I expected half of that price or at least under $100 but clearly I did no research.
He gave me $15 off when I mentioned the discount card he gave me 8 years ago but that will likely be the last time I hire him or anyone as long as I'm physically capable of doing it myself.
If this guy did 5 jobs a day (he was here less than an hour). That's $895 a day (and he was booked weeks out), that's a very lucrative over $200K a year single-man business.

A lot of friends and neighbors learned something from me that lint build-up from the dryer to dryer vent duct outside homes can cause a fire. Your comment, this is a job neglected by homeowners and they don’t realize it’s a bit of a fire hazard all that lint from your dryer can build-up in the inner walls of that duct from your dryer to outside the house and when that hot, hot air comes from your dryer can cause a fire. A friend commented, You know your stuff about dryer fires and prevention in recent days. She was thankful I helped prevent a dryer fire in her home, as 16 feet from the basement to outside house was clogged with lint; a dryer fire was waiting to happen last Saturday evening. Thank you for this helpful video.

It is obvious that you have done this job and used the tools because you nailed everything right about the whole process. Thank you for this helpful video about how to clean dryer vent ducts step-by-step. I just helped a friend clean her dryer vent duct from basement to outside of home. The friend learned that a drill connected to flexible rods with brushes prevented a dryer fire. The dryer vent cleaning system kit featured in the video is worth every penny for deep cleaning dryer vents. 16 feet of the vent was clogged with
lint from the basement to outside of home and could have been a dryer fire in her home. She told me,”clothes were not
drying.” I have learned so much from this
video and strive to inform others about dryer fires. Electrical tape does keep the rods from coming apart during the dryer vent cleaning process. Guiding a drill, when adding a new rod, is very helpful. I used this technique this evening helping a friend clean a dryer
vent. She replied,”you really know your stuff about dryer fires.” Thanks for teaching me this important task.

Great instructional video...I've been using the "LintEater" for nearly 20-yrs; at my home and at a 2-family house I maintain. I make it a habit to schedule yearly cleanings. I designed the dryer exhaust vents at each home using 4" round metal ducts; sealed with either high temp flue tape or aluminum foil tape rated for high temps due to their properties of adherence and being flame retardant; and then terminating each end with metal (stainless steel) worm gear duct clamps. Simple construction; simple cleaning, as you have demonstrated, and does not require a "professional" to install or clean. This is not a hi-tech or specialized industry requiring training or using proprietary materials; and that's the point of a DIYer video...to inspire and enlighten those who wish to learn and do the work themselves! Thanks for sharing; I appreciate it. Best wishes and kindest regards.

Great video. Hardly any of these dryer vents are installed to code, which limits the length and amount of elbows. I take the cabinet apart and vacuum out the inside of the dryer also, especially with gas dyers. The lint seals go bad, and then the cabinet will have a layer of lint, which is very flammable. That termination was a little to close to the ground. I would dig a little gravel out and get more clearance.

She got 3 sections into the vent, past a 30 degree bend, and lost the brush and deepest rod. Then she called me. I was able to feed the other poles from the laundry room to the exhaust vent with the smaller brush as the lead end. Unfortunately it did not push the detached end out so I made about a 2.5 inch wide tape ball secured onto the very end of a pole in the laundry room. I then pulled from the outside slowly hoping the tape ball would grab the stuck brush on the way out, it did until the 30 degree turn where the detached pole would not make the final turn, about 5 feet from the vent. Before I pulled the tape ball past the stuck brush I used an old broom stick to position the rod end to make the 30 degree turn. An added tip: with sharp turns the brush is sometimes difficult at making the bend, my brush stem can be bent slightly which aids in getting through the bends, just go by hand through the turns, it will find its way through, then continue with the drill.

Thank you, sir. I am female homeowner with a 26 year old dryer that has never had the dryer vents and ducting cleaned out . Hi James! There is a link to the borescope I used in the video description. As for the best way to use it: you tether your phone to it via wifi, and it streams the video directly to your phone. It's pretty convenient to use that way, since the screen is not physically connected to the borescope. This frees up both hands to manipulate the scope as you thread it into things. I like this scope, but do wish it had a little better image quality. Thanks for watching!

I helped my neighbor clean her dryer vent duct, lint chute, lint screen, rear exhaust, and ventilation holes of her front load
dryer today. I think the dryer could have caused a dryer fire in her home from the lint
build-up in the dryer vent to the dryer. The Gardus LintEater Pro dryer vent cleaning system kit and extension rods featured in your helpful video helped save my neighbor’s home from a dryer fire waiting to happen

I remember the comment all the lint build-up from the dryer to dryer vent, all that hot, hot air can ignite the lint and can cause a fire. I tell neighbors I learned how to clean a dryer vent from your very helpful video How to clean a dryer vent

I may be overly cautious, but I clean it out every 6 months since the process is quite easy at my house.

Very informative video, great job going step by step. I have cleaned my own vent, friends and family, also neighbors. The screw type of vent rods need special attention like you mentioned in the video. Disaster if you get that brush or rod stuck in the duct. I use a push and snap version, you can go either direction, but more expensive. TIP for installing hose. Best to remove the washer unit first. After you are finished cleaning. Now you have room to install the dryer unit. As you push the dryer closer to the wall with one arm, with the other you guide the hose inch by inch compressing the hose as you go. This way you can use a shorter hose and keep it straight or not get a too large loop in your hose. Even better, have someone help you push the dryer slowly towards the wall as you compress the hose trying not to kink it. Then when you are done install the washer. Also, if you have those flexible white plastic hoses, get rid of it. They are not fireproof or code compliance. Federal building code, dryer vent duct cannot be longer than 30 feet and no more than two 90 degree elbows. If you have a 90 degree elbow, you must add another 3 feet in total length of vent. Example: If your total length of dryer duct is 30 ft and you have one 90 degree elbow. You have to add 3 ft. ( 30ft +3ft = 33 ft.) Your duct does not meet building code. Most dryer manufacture state how long your dryer vent can be used. It must meet the minimum. If any of these requirements are not met, if a fire occurs, your insurance may not cover your claim. Also, if you do not properly clean your dryer vent in a timely manner and a fire occurs. Failure to properly maintain a regular maintenance cleaning schedule can void a claim. Insurance companies are great, but read the fine print.
