Unfortunately as strong as horses are, they're pretty fragile too. The reason broken legs are basically a death sentence is that unless you're a literal billionaire there's no way for the horse to recover and they'll never be able to exercise again. The way my mum has always described it to me is that it's like a horse has five hearts, one in their chest and one in each hoof. They can't not move. If they break their leg they can't move around the paddock, they also can't lie down because they won't be able to get up again (which they know, so they'll exaust themselves standing until they quite literally can't) and even if they do somehow manage to heal, they never be able to do any real exercise, which is super important to their health.
The only time I've seen a horse recover from a serious injury was a super small miniature horse named Teddy (He's still around and I say hi every time I see him) who was so fat from not being exercised properly and eating too much rich grass, he dislocated his hoof. Everyone thought he was a goner, but nothing was broken and the owner had the kind of money to save him. If Teddy wasn't a miniature and instead something like a clydsdale of gypsie cob, he probably wouldn't of lived.
I've only ever had to have one horse put down, but she was a thoroughbred that we had just bought who was underwight when we got her, had a back injury and developed stress founder (founder being when the hoof wall weakens and separates from the foot, it's pretty gnarly so don't look it up if you're squeamish). She was also 22 so at the end of the day she was just in pain and it would of been pretty cruel to keep her going. Luckily after that we got 2 quarter horses who are still super healthy, one of which, Banjo, is almost 30!
Unfortunatly horses are just an animal that are pretty sturdy until they aren't. If they get a stomach ache and decide to roll, they'll get collic, if they run through a fence they screw up their legs, it's pretty unfortunate but can be avoided if you know what you're doing and feed them right.

It’s really hard for a horse to heal from a broken leg because A) they stand most of the time and B) forcing a horse to lie down for that long causes ulcers, immense stress-they hate staying still-and a whole bunch of other problems. Plus horses have really weird anatomy. They have like 80 bones in their legs alone. And if the break is below the knee, healing is also impeded because they have no muscles below their knees and therefore not many blood vessels. And healing from a break makes them especially prone to laminitis, which is an extremely painful hoof issue. If a horse is able to make a recovery there’s a good chance it’ll live in excruciating pain for the rest of its life. It sucks but it’s sometimes the most humane thing to do. Hopefully as technology advances we can come up with some better solutions. :(

It’s exactly the same as with humans. A major injury to any athelete often won’t allow them to get to the level they once were. In this case the owners are too selfish to treat and/or give them a life after racing.

Horses have very different anatomy from humans. They are standing almost all of the time. Their legs have to bear a ton more weight and a ton more impact. You can’t put horses on crutches or in a wheelchair. They want to move naturally and will try to do that by any means. A hairline or partial fracture can be healed and often is healed, but they’re prone to their bones just shattering or fully fracturing because of how heavy they are and how relatively small their leg bones are. A full fracture unfortunately often means that in the unlikely event the bone is able to heal, the horse is going to be in extreme, unrelenting pain for the rest of its life. A lot of the time the owners try to heal the horses before vets recommend euthanasia. It sucks and I don’t doubt the racing industry is corrupt and cruel, but there are good reasons for it to be done in a lot of cases.

Certified horse girl here to try and explain the horse debacle: Horses' legs and feet are incredibly fragile, the reason horses get put down is because it often turns into a vicious cycle of healing the same wound only for one wrong step in the pasture to start it all again. And that's assuming the leg does heal, infection will certainly cause problems if not. Even if they never race again, they can still easily reinjure their leg. You can't keep them in a sling for long, they easily form arthritis in all of their legs, and get depressed whilst cooped up in a stall for too long. Horses are very complicated, and racehorses specifically are often inbred, only making these problems worse. Usually the decision is made for the horse's sake and not the owner's wallet. But I won't deny the racing industry can be awfully corrupt, it has been for generations.

I did some research and basically there is one way to save a horse after a broken leg. It’s to amputate the leg, no matter the injury, and replace it with a prosthetic. The issue is that the way a horse is, the leg itself will never heal properly again. So you can replace the leg, but you can understand why it’s not done often because surgery is somewhere between 10-25k for the prosthetic.

1:25 - Vet here. It's not that horses don't heal. They do. However they are extremely difficult to work with. The list of issues are extensive but I'll list a few:
    - They aren't great candidates for surgery. Unlike cows who are extremely amicable to standing surgeries, horses pretty much require an operating theatre for almost everything.
    - Anesthesia is hard on them. Horses tend to wake up violently from anesthesia, as opposed to slow and gradual. This can result in immediately snapping a newly-repaired bone. I've personally seen a case where a hosre had successful fracture repair surgery, and the second it awoke in surgery the horse reared up, dropped down on it's front legs, and immediately snapped them both.
    - They can't lay down long for long. If they lie down for too long of a period in surgery, the weight of their body is literally enough to cut off blood circulation to muscles and tissue, causing it to die (pressure necrosis). In cases like that, the animal will probably become permanently lame.
    - They are large, heavy and active. Ultimately, if the thing we are repairing is a limb fracture... then that means that the fracture must hold up under the tremendous strain of daily use by the horse. This isn't like a human who can get a fracture and then rest that arm/limb in a cast until healed. Orthopedic surgeries in many animals in general require the fixed, fractured limb to be usable during the entire healing process. With horses, just by their nature, these fractures are extremely prone to breaking again either from new bone injury or simply from the failure of the tools used to fix the fracture (lag screws, plates etc).
    - This last one might be a bit biased, but from my own experience.... horses just seem to die easily. It sometimes feels like they are actively trying to have their recovery go poorly so that they can keel over and die. I'm not an equine specialist myself, and only sometimes work with horses, but it's not a matter of me killing horses, but rather this experience comes more from my time working alongside numerous vets who are equine specialists themselves.
    ****
When it comes to race horses specifically, there is the extra issue of money and worth. A race horse's value runs out fast.... and if it has no value for the bigwigs then it isn't worth spending on. Remember that even if the horse is young and highly likely to survive, it would still be unable to race during healing and then after healing it would have lost some of its athletic abilities and would have to train it's way back up. That lost time is lost money... meaning that spending to repair a racehorse is essentially money lost twice. Most people in the racehorse scene aren't very willing to go so far on a surgery that may ultimately fail... which is sad but is also the reality of the industry.

Very heavy animals, and their breathing partially revolves around running with the way their rib cage contracts and expands, not to mention they are animals that traditionally have huge territories. The bone will never heal enough to fully withstand the strain, and while some horses may survive, they'll be forced into a sedentary lifestyle, which most people disapprove of. Not to mention, there isn't a realistic way to get a horse to actually rest its leg. They'll most likely deal more damage to themselves, and with an animal that big and strong, the vet trips alone are expensive and very dangerous for the horse and people involved.

I can actually answer a fair amount of the horse questions. I have an uncle who trains racing horses. One big thing to remember is that most horses are owned for a reason. Horses have jobs and sometimes its more costly to take care of an injured horse than to just buy a new one. Farmers dont know how long the horse will be injured or if the horse will fully recover.
In the context of racing, most horses that are racing are very young, in their physical prime. Their racing record and pedigree determines how valuable they are as a breeding stallion. If a horse gets injured, it will likely never race seriously again. Sometimes they keep the horse around because they can get good money selling the semen. If they cant make their money back selling semen, they just euthanize it.

Horses seem big and tough, but can die extremely easily. A small leg fracture can lay them up, and without regular walking they downhill fast. They get intestinal blockage very easily, even laying down and rolling can cause their gut to twist wrong because of their size and tear them up internally. As far as fright, if it rears up and falls, their weight can cause major injury. A friend of mine was training one once, it reared and fell flat on its ass. The shock went up into its skull and killed it instantly.

Crows rlly do hold grudges and they tell their friends too. I once didn’t give a crow some of my cheese it’s when he was literally asking and ever since they all hate me now and don’t let me try to feed them to rebuild the relationship we could’ve had 😥

You also gotta remember how large a horse is. Even if they aren’t race horses, many times it’s just not a good life and their health deteriorates quickly if they damage their legs.

If horses sustain injury to their legs, since they stand for EVERYTHING and getting a horse to not panic in a lift and further hurt itself is nearly impossible.
So often times it is more humane to euthanize because they'd be in constant pain otherwise.
Some cases they can heal though. And some breeds it's easier for them to heal I think...
I grew up on a horse ranch and so that's what I was told. We didn't have any leg injuries though. More common with race horses because... sadly they are often times more abused.

From what I read Horse bones shatter and not crack like human bones. Horses need all four legs to stand or walk, unlike cats or dogs they can limp and support their weight. Its like trying to cure a terminally ill cancer patient, we are just cutting the suffering part of it for horses.

Horses legs dont heal well because the bloodflow to their legs isnt great, and their leg bones are like human long bones. They take a long time to heal even with good bloodflow.
The issue is less from how long it takes and more that horses cannot walk on 3 legs like dogs or sheep, and they cannot lay down for the entire length of treatment without causing organ damage.

Even if it wasn't about money, I've been around horses and they get depressed, almost angry at the injury and not being able to compete or do the same things. They even get themselves high, sometimes so much they have to be stopped almost any means . Just do not let them get sauced. They od 💀. They literally pass out and fall down and sometimes they get hurt which is also bad. Its fucked man 😂 horses are people in a way.

There is a trail I walk on frequently. Lots of crows I say hi to. One day I wore my leather jacket and the crows went ape shit. Sure enough no leather jacket we are friends, put that jacket on and I'm target # 1. So I try to remember a different jacket, or I can just take it off and carry it past the crows hood. Man I love crows. I hope they find the true leather jacket wearer and carry out their justice.
